Dated this 24th of November, 2021 Rhonda Leonard, Treasurer

The other day I got to the park, had just backed the truck into my usual spot, and was looking out across the parking lot - there's a number of different trails leading out from it, all of them heading into the trees and up the hill. And out of the trees along the main trail comes a solitary figure, tough to tell whether it’s a man or a woman, dressed in a ski jacket, baggy pants and a toque, but oh, yes, it's an older lady, a gramma. And she is pulling on a leash and the leash is attached to, gosh, that’s a big dog . . . no, that’s not a dog, that’s a . . . llama? Sure enough, it’s a gramma with a llama. A few days later, I was talking to one of the trail maintenance guys and mentioned the gramma with a llama.

“Oh, yes”, he says and went on to tell me she owns a llama farm just down the road. The first time he had seen them had been early on a Monday morning after a weekend when he had, no question, “enjoyed” himself too much and was having a tough time of it. He had been on his hands and knees cleaning a storm drain, moving slowly, head spinning, stomach roiling, off in a world of misery all his own. When he looked up and saw the gramma and the llama coming down the path towards him, he was so surprised and startled that he jumped up. Big mistake - he shouldn't have jumped up and he definitely shouldn't have jumped up so quickly because that was his undoing. He knew he was going to lose it - it was inevitable - and he tried to turn and step off the path, limit the damage. But he tripped on a root at the edge of the path and fell into the bush and into the mess he had just relieved himself of on the way down. Things are always funnier when they happen to other people, but . . . Haven't had a drink since, he says. Probably doesn't much care for llamas, either.

often go for a walk up Mill Hill, a short hiking trail in a small park not far from where I live on Vancouver Island. There is enough elevation gain to increase the heart rate, put a blush on your cheeks and warm your toes. It is always a beautiful walk, up a winding, leaf-strewn gravelled trail through the forest with a good view from the top - on a clear day, you can see Mt. Baker off to the east, and some days you can even see Mount Rainier, off to the south-east, just beyond Seattle.

This safety Tip is aimed at the younger members of our community but something everyone should know in the event of a house fire. Parents, please take time to share and explain this Tip to your kids. 3 Steps to follow to minimize injury in the event your clothing catches fire. 1) STOP – Stop any movement which may fan the flames or hamper those trying to put out the fire. 2) DROP – Drop to the ground, lay down if possible and cover your face with your hands to protect your eyes and airway. 3) ROLL – Roll over and over or back and forth on the ground to try to extinguish the fire. Coats, rugs, blankets or other heavy cloth items can be used to smother the flames. If you ever need to Stop, Drop and Roll include the use of a Fire Extinguisher and dousing with water to put out flames. If you smell or see smoke crawl on your knees to leave house (smoke rises). Don’t hide. Leave your home as fast as you can and meet the rest of your family at a predetermined location outside (have a plan). Call 911

Exit drills are very important in helping your family stay safe and survive a fire. Here are some tips: Kids as young as 3 can start practising a fire escape drill. • Draw up a family fire escape plan. • Have two ways out of every room. • Install and maintain smoke alarms. • Sleep with your door closed. • Establish a meeting place. • Remind children to never hide. • If the alarm sounds check the door with the back of your hand. If its hot don’t open the door. • Once your out of the house go to your meeting place and NEVER go back in. • Practise your plan. Until next time stay Safe and Healthy! If you have any questions or would like more information contact: Battalion Chief Wayne Pearson (Pike Lake Fire Hall) 306-230-1544, or Fire Chief Mike Given (Delisle & District Fire Department) 306-493-7777

New Pellet Business at Swanson

C

lay’s Pellet Solutions is a brand new business that has started up in the Swanson area. The business began from the dreams of some individuals looking for a less costly source of heat. They ordered a small pellet mill and began experimenting with making pellets from straw, sawdust and shavings. Currently they are making wood pellets for use in pellet stoves or even in wood stoves that have been adapted for using pellets. They will have a larger mill coming with plans that in the new year they

will be able to meet the needs of many more local customers. “Right now we are selling them bulk and will gladly fill a tote for you or you can bring your own containers and we will fill them with our high quality pellets”, says owner Clayton Wiebe, “Hopefully by next winter we will be set up to sell them in forty pound bags”. For more information you can email them at clayspelletsolutions76@gmail.com and they will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Christmas Bird Count: Pike Lake – Whitecap January 3, 2022

E

ach year in the Christmas season, members of the Saskatoon Nature Society organize one-day bird counts in and around Saskatoon. Our results, together with those from other birders around the world help establish trends in bird populations. The count in the Pike Lake—Whitecap area (see map) is set for Monday, January 3rd. That day, small teams of nature society members and friends will be driving the roads and visiting yards where owners have given us permission, to count every bird of every species we can find. If you feed birds on your property, please do give a thought to ensuring your feeders are full that day. Every well-stocked bird feeder helps us as well as the birds! If you live inside our count circle and have been contacted about this count in past years, you can expect to be contacted again. If you have not been contacted about this in the past but would welcome a

brief visit on your property by a small number of bird enthusiasts on January 3rd (outdoors only), please contact the count organizer. All we will leave is some footprints in the snow. If you would rather count your birds yourself, please consider signing up as a feeder-watcher. All you have to do is keep a tally of the bird species and numbers you identify in your yard on count day and submit it, preferably electronically. We’ll provide full instructions once you’ve registered. Please register online at saskatoonnature.org/scheduled-trips/ using the form under the Pike Lake—Whitecap Christmas Bird Count, or you can contact count organizer Donna Bruce at 306-956-3437 or donna.bruce@sasktel.net. You can find further information about Saskatoon Nature Society online at saskatoonnature.org.

Your COMMUNITY... Your NEWSPAPER These are just some of the many creative writings from Grade 10 students at Delisle Composite School - Thank you all ! Snow Prettier in the Snowy Light By: Pieter Schmidt This is a beautiful winter’s night. Snow swirls through the air, moving with gusto, Yet she’s prettier in the snowy light. The hoarfrost; to see is a true delight, The blowing wind, the tiny flakes of snow, This is a beautiful winter’s night. Her hair is flowing, about to take flight, Her ruby lips are luscious, like merlot, Yet she’s prettier in the snowy light. The whole world, coloured a very vibrant white, The cold slaps, like a shot of espresso, This is a beautiful winter’s night. Her smile can only be described as bright, In awe, she emanates a stunning glow, Yet she’s prettier in the snowy light The beauty of this soir, I can’t write, I embrace her, who I want? Now I know This is a beautiful winter’s night, Yet she’s prettier in the snowy light.

The Saskatchewan Winter We Know By: Ashlyn Gessell Here, it is cold and a tad bit snowy, Here, it is awful, the wind way too blowy. That’s what you’d think if you didn’t know, That all kinds of fun can be had with the snow! Sledding, and skiing, and snowboarding too, Hockey as well with friends many or few! Soothing hot chocolate goes with ice fishing fun, An old pair of snow-shoes make for a good run. Don’t forget snow forts and hits in the head, With a “miss-thrown” snowball that somehow hit you instead! So know that you’re wiser, go give us a shot, You’re sure to like us--we’re quite a great lot! And even if you don’t well, you can’t say we didn’t try, Thank you anyway, and I’ll bid you goodbye. This land is too special to be liked by most, Thank you, Saskatchewan, for being quite the host! Throw us your frostbite, throw us your might, Throw us your blizzards that come in the night. If you dare for a challenge, try to make us leave: We love you so much we would never concede!

It’s Just Around the Corner By: Marshall Kapeller It’s been a long day at work but it's finally Christmas break. The best time to spend with family. William Gold walks through the front door of his house as his 2 kids 8 5 year old Olivia and 8 year old Johnny, “I know I’ve been kinda busy but It’s my week off now so it’s time to focus on my wonderful family.” Will peeks into the kitchen and sees his wife Amanda fixing up supper. Amanda turns around and smiles at Will when she spots him, “Hello honey, your home quite early! You happy that you're off work for at least a bit? gosh it's been forever since you've had a break. What was it, the last Christmas break you had?” “Yeah but you know why that is with the whole promotion and the boss giving me basically the shortest deadline known to man on that presentation this week. But to answer your question, yes I am happy to finally spend some time with my family. Especially tomorrow being Christmas Eve” Will gives his wife a sime that tells her how much he truly loves her. Will helps Amanda set the table and they call down the kids for dinner. The kids rush downstairs ready for their gullets to be stuffed. “Watch Out here comes the ham!” Amanda sets the most incredible looking roasted ham on the table and everyone starts to dig in. “Now kids I know It's been a month since dad's new promotion and I've been working really hard to where I sometimes put it ahead of you guys, but I just want to say that starting this week, My eyes and ears will be at full attention to you guys. I want to make it up to you guys,” Will gives his kids the same smile he gave his wife just minutes earlier. The whole family has their meal, telling stories about their day, laughing, and having the best time of their lives. After dinner they all gather into the living room for their traditional family movie night to mark the start of their holidays. They choose to watch the movie Elf. They have a blast watching it, quoting their favorite scenes, and overall just loving the time they now have together. Finally after hours of laughter the kids start to grow sleepy. Will carries Olivia who’s already dozed off while Johnny follows to their bedroom. “Dad?” Johnny looks at his dad with intent. “Yeah Johnny?” Will knows the question his son will ask, as he asks it every year since he's been 5, However he still inquires. “Who gives Santa presents if he's the one who gives them to everyone.?” “Well we do Johnny. It’s our way of saying thanks to Santa for giving our wonderful children such amazing gifts,” with that question all cleared up, Will tucks his son into bed, turns the light off and gets ready for Christmas Day the next morning. Will hobbles back downstairs and noticing the T.V. in the living room has been turned off, he decides he might as well head off to bed as well. However when he passes the kitchen he notices that the milk and cookies his kids had left out have now vanished without a trace, leaving just an empty plate and glass sitting on the island. Will starts to grow suspicious, his wife would not eat them and he hasn't been in the kitchen since supper. He slinks around the corner trying to be oh so quiet, and right as he can see the whole kitchen in his view a large red figure dips around the other corner and off to the front entrance. Will quickly bolts back around and makes a b-line for the front door. He bursts it open, turns around, looks up at the roof and sees him. He sees the face that every child has wanted to see at least once in their life. He sees Santa. Will and the good ol’ Saint Nick just sit there and stare at each other for a little bit, before Santa gives Wilbur Gold a soft smile and says, “Oh Will. You were the best one of them all.” Will doesn't respond immediately. He's just so amazed that he's just now seeing this childhood hero eye to eye for the first time. All Will can do in response is to smile back, “Thank you Santa…” And like that, Santa was off. The reindeer whisked him away as he let out one finally hardy “Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas to all! And to all a good night!” William Gold was left standing in front of his house, trying to process any little bit as to what just happened. But just as he thought he made sense of it, he realizes that this was not any sort of insane luck. But instead was planned by Santa himself, the entire time. The next morning Will, his wife Ammanda, and their two children sit in the living room in their pajamas. The fireplace is nice and warm, and presents filled the room both under the tree and in their stockings. Everyone was so happy, especially Will who now has a whole new look on the spirit of Christmas. Happy Holidays Everyone

By: Sierra Brown

The boy—Johnny, is his name—pads to the window in the living room, careful not to wake his sleeping father, reclined in the leather armchair. It’s late, and the only sounds in the house are Johnny’s quiet footsteps and the bong of the grandfather clock in the hall striking eleven. Johnny raises his stuffed moose to the window and whispers in its ear: “Snow today?” He rubs a circle in the frost and peers out, hopeful. A bleak sight meets his eyes--the moon illuminating only bare grass and brown trees. Johnny sighs. “Tomorrow,” he whispers. Then he tiptoes back to his room. He knows he should’ve been there the whole time, but Johnny is four. Three winters have come and gone, but he remembers none of them, only the blazing summers and the bleak cold that reigns now. The youngest of four brothers, Johnny has heard them talk of snow excitedly--they can’t wait, and naturally, neither can he. So Johnny crawls out of his room, three long hours after his bedtime, and checks the ground, hoping for one thing. It doesn’t come. Only the whoosh of cold air that slides across the floor in winters, and the sharp scent of pine needles emanating from their withering tree. The next evening, he inspects the sapling--or rather, the presents underneath it. Four, he counts, four presents. He doesn't know if there’s one for him--he can’t read yet. But he counts anyway; four presents. Sometimes he checks the ornaments. There are five of those— two made by each of his brothers except Jamie, who had shattered his second on the way home from school. And then Johnny stands again at the window, places two little hands on the glass and stares out, willing the clouds to open up and dump their load in his yard. They don’t, and he finally allows himself to be dragged, defeated, to bed. At quarter to eleven his eyes snap open. He pushes his blanket aside and shuffles down the hall, moose in tow. An unexpected sight greets him as he steps into view of the living room; His father kneels by stockings that are evidently less empty, and his mother nearly runs him over leaving the room. “Johnny!” she yelps. “What are you doing?” He looks up to answer, but as he opens his mouth she shakes her head. “Never mind. You go to bed now,” she adds quickly, and as she shepherds him out, he catches a glimpse of the frost-covered window. Johnny lets out a small cry of protest, because either he’s just seeing things, or the sky is dropping lazy white flakes that twirl to the ground, blanketing it in powder… but then again, he could be dreaming. Johnny doesn’t fall asleep for another hour, and he only wakes up when Jamie leaps onto his bed. When finally he stumbles into the living room, he grins, laughs, and he runs to the window. He passes the tree lined with gifts and the stockings stuffed full, and Johnny comes to a stop in front of a windowpane lined with snow, framing a landscape covered by snowdrifts and edged in frost, and he throws back his head and laughs into the silvery air.

Winter Story: The Bitter Man’s Winter By: Sophie Rose Why, oh why, did winter have to be so miserable and cold? People always say, "The spirit of Christmas is in the air!" and "Oh, it isn't as bad as you make it out to be." But they never say anything about the ice on the roads that cause people to crash, or the insurmountable snow storms that trash the perfectly cut grass of my yard, ruining my image. I've tried to understand the 'joy in the air' before, and at one point I might have agreed with everyone, but after the loss of my wife, I cannot see what could possibly be so joyful about such a wicked season. After she died, I threw myself into keeping up a perfect image, so she wouldn't see me crying for her impossibly warm hugs or delectable cooking. I made sure to express my hatred for winter every time it came around, so then the Earth knew how much I hated it for taking away the love of my life. I barely got out anymore, only appearing from my house (too big for only one person), to get groceries or sometimes a bite to eat. Today was one of those days that I decided I could handle social interaction, if only for an hour or so. The Round Robin was my wifes favourite place to eat at, so I made sure that was the only restaurant I ever went to. It seemed as if tonight was going to be busy, there had been an hour wait just to be sat, and after that I ended up waiting what felt like even longer for a server to come around. “Hello there! My name is Stacy, I will be your server tonight, is there anything I can get you started with?” The woman helping me held such a striking resemblance to my wife, as if the universe were mocking me for my anger at it. I couldn't help but stare, the clatter of utensils and talking suddenly going quiet as if this moment was fated to happen. Stacy was not my wife, she never would be. She would never cook as well as my wife had, her hugs would never feel warm enough, but, maybe, this winter would be more bearable. Maybe, I could love again. “Sir, are you okay? Do you need me to call someone?” A finger snapped in front of my face, and the sounds that had previously been muted, filtered back into my ears, “I’m fine, I just couldn't help but wonder how such a beautiful woman like you ended up working in a place like this.” The words slipped past my lips as easily as taking a breath. Stacy let out a heartfelt chuckle that made my bones tingle, “Why, you are so nice, aren't you sir, I do like kind men. But if you're feeling okay, is there anything I can get you?” As I went to pay my bill, I noticed a number written on a scrap of paper tucked behind the bill. Call me! (333)-123-4567 Without meaning too, the corner of my mouth lifted into the shape of a smile. I took the scrap paper, paid my bill and left. The next day I visited my wife’s grave and told her all about her doppelganger. How she reminded me of the love that once filled my heart and how I finally felt ready to move on. I told her how she would always be my first love, and, as if she were listening to me from above, I heard a whisper from the wind, And you were mine. THE END

www.rmreview.net All I Want For Christmas Rudolph the Is My Two Front Teeth Red-nosed Reindeer Every body stops and stares at me These two teeth are gone as you can see I don’t know just who to blame for this catastrophe! But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be! All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth! Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could with you “Merry Christmas.” It seems so long since I could say, “Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!” Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be, if I could only whistle (thhhh) All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth. Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could wish you “Merry Christmas!”

Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains: And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains. Refrain Glo-ria in excelsis D-eo, Glo-ria, in excelsis D-eo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why you joyous songs prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heav’nly song? Refrain Come to Bethlehem, and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ, the Lord, our new-born King. Refrain

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw it You would even say it glows All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say, “Rudolph with your nose so bright Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?” Then how the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer You’ll go down in history!

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman Was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal; Frosty the snowman, is a fairy tale they say, He was made of snow but the children know How he came to life one day. There must have been some magic In that old silk hat they found ‘Cause when they put it on his head He began to dance around Oh, Frosty the snowman Knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, ‘Let’s run and we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away!’ Down to the village, with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square, Saying, ‘Catch me if you can!’ He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop, And he only paused a moment When he heard him holler ‘Stop!’ For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way. But he waved goodbye, saying, ‘Don’t you cry I’ll be back again same day!’ Thumpety thump thump, (2) Look at Frosty go, thumpety thump thump, (2) Over the hills of snow

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night. She didn’t see me creep down the stairs to have a peep; She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom fast asleep. Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his beard so snowy white; Oh, what a laugh it would have been If Daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.

O Holy Night O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world In sin and error pining ‘Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn, Fall on your knees! O hear the angels voices! O night, divine! O night, when Christ was born, O night, divine! O night, O night divine!

Santa Claus is Coming To Town You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town He’s making a list, And checking it twice; Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice. Santa Claus is coming to town He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake! O! You better watch out! You better not cry. Better not pout, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town. Santa Claus is coming to town.

Silent Night Silent night, Holy night All is calm, all is bright, ‘Round you virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, Holy night Shepherds quake, at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing,”Alleluia!” Christ the Savior is born Christ the savior is born. Silent night, Holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord at Thy birth Jesus Lord at Thy birth.

Jingle Bells Dashing through the snow In a one horse open sleigh O'er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bob tails ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to laugh and sing A sleighing song tonight Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot We got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh yeah Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh
