peration Santa is a group of concerned citizens in Asquith who want to help needy people during the Christmas season.

They are starting their eighteenth year of the “Operation Santa” program. The community of Asquith and area was generous in their support last year, both monetarily and in donated grocery items, allowing the group to provide hampers to sixteen very grateful family units plus a small gift for 24 very happy children!

They are running the program again this year to provide grocery and Christmas meal hampers to needy local families as well as small gifts for their children.

You can apply for yourself or nominate another person or family.

Drop nomination forms at the Town Office or Post Office by December 9th.

If you or your organization would like to purchase a gift for a child or donate grocery items or cash, please drop it off prior to Dec. 9th.

Delisle Angel Tree Program

T

he 3rd Annual Delisle Angel Tree Program provides individuals and families with greatly needed items this holiday season. In the past 2 years, the program has impacted over 150 individuals from more than 50 families.

Individuals or families can be self-nominated or nominated by others and are asked to supply a list of NEED items as well as one or two WANT items. Past participants will not be automatically nominated so be sure to complete the nomination each year.

Sure there has been lots of things that have happened this year to talk about... the election of the Federal Liberals, the changes coming in the potash sector, Brexit, the ongoing war on terror both home and abroad, the apparent election of Donald Trump south of the border... but I will save it all for another time.

Actually, the size of this editorial is really due to the lack of space, thanks to your community’s gift to you !

Local Agricultural Society Makes Appeal to Vandals

he Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society purchased a wheel chair accessible portapotty (toilet) which is intended for use by the community of Vanscoy for events at the Vanscoy outdoor arena, sports teams at the ball diamond, or by the general public at events at or near the community hall and grounds. The money used for this purchase was raised from community organizations, businesses and fundraising done by volunteers in the Vanscoy district community (the toilet was rather expensive and a lot of hard work went into raising money for it).

It is with much disappointment that I inform you that individuals within the community are determined to destroy this property.

The toilet was tipped over on more than one occasion which resulted in considerable mess on the inside.

Now, in late October, graffiti (not the appreciable artistic kind) but the kind done from a lack of respect, pride or understanding of the need for such a piece of equipment in the community, was done. The effort to clean and maintain this donated community amenity has become a large task for the small group of volunteers within the Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society.

RCMP REPORT

From October 31 thru November 28, 2016 the Detachment attended 548 calls resulting in 331 charges being laid.

Highway Equipment Used in Vandalism Sometime between Oct 29th and Oct 30th someone vandalized several areas in the Town of Radisson. The Dept of Highway Payloader was found in town and it appears it was used for this vandalism.

Break & Enter at Borden Home

November 6th at 3:05 pm a quad was reported stolen from a residence in Radisson, which happened in the last couple of days.

November 17th at 10:13 pm a two vehicle accident occurred on Highway 16 near Langham. Minor injuries occurred.

November 19th at 4:00 pm a break and enter was reported at an acreage outside of Borden. Gas was taken, as well as some other property.

November 26th at 9:10 am a report of a break and enter to a house in the Borden area was reported. Doesn’t appear that anything was taken.

The matter is still under investigation.

Stranger Removed from Langham

Driver Charged at Langham School November 2nd at 2:08 pm, a report was received of a vehicle doing donuts in front of the school in Langham. Patrol was made and a 38 year old male was charged.

TV Stolen from Radisson Home November 2nd someone walked into a house in Radisson and stole a TV out of the house while the owner was away. There are no suspects at this time.

Gas Stolen from Borden Swather November 6th at 12:30 pm a report of theft of gas from a swather in the Borden District was reported.

December 2016

November 1st at 10:30 pm a 49 year old male was reported hanging around the Langham Petro Can. Members made a patrol and he was no longer there. He was located walking on Highway 16. Taken to the Lighthouse in Saskatoon.

Impaired Driver on Dalmeny Highway November 11th at 5:10 am a vehicle was stopped on the Dalmeny Highway as the vehicle was swerving from side to side.

Driver charged with impaired driving.

Asquith Home Broken Into

November 8th at 11:06 am a house was reported broken into in the Asquith area. Several items were taken from the house.

Trailer Stolen from Borden Firehall

Animal Shelter Fire near Asquith

On November 14th at 3:00 pm a black, single axel open trailer was reported missing from beside the firehall in Borden. Trailer has still not been found.

November 19th at 5:22 pm members were advised of a structure fire at a farm near Asquith. Animal shelter was on fire, no risk to other buildings on the property.

Suspect Caught in Grandora Home

Dangerous Driver at Asquith School

November 17th at 10:36 pm called received of a break and enter in the Grandora area. The home owner caught the suspect, however got away before police arrived. Patrols made however suspect was not located.

November 22nd at 1:08 pm a report was received in Asquith of a vehicle driving dangerously around the school. The driver was spoken to and warned of his driving.

Grandora Truck & Trailer Missing

November 24th at 11:37 am a break and enter into a shop in Langham was reproted. Several tools were taken.

November 18th at 12:41 pm a truck and trailer was noticed missing from overnight in the Grandora area. The truck was recovered three days later in Saskatoon.

Cow Shot in RM of Vanscoy November 12th at 10:51 am a cow was reported shot in the RM of Vanscoy. Members are investigating.

Man Driven Over in Langham November 22nd at 12:30 pm a 50 year old male was driven over by the truck that he had been working on in Langham.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP Need Your Help...

MOTORHOME THEFT Martensville RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in locating a White 1981 Vanguard Motorhome which was stolen from a location in the town of Langham. It is believed the vehicle was taken during the morning on Saturday October 15th. The motorhome was loaded onto a large, dark coloured flat bed truck and was seen driving towards Highway 16.

resident-Elect Trump has only been in that exalted position for a week, and he has through his actions and statements thrown the world into a tailspin. It is like the proverbial “bull in the china shop,” with the entire international structure in turmoil.

Evidence is of the emerging crisis where the world leaders meeting in APEC to plan how to react with no solutions. Trump is throwing out statements faster than anyone can counter.

And the threat intensifies as he makes the selection of radical right-wingers for his cabinet. Any hope that Trump would modify his stands when in the White House are now dashed.

Without the authority to act he already has our beef and lumber exporters crying “uncle.” The financial markets are adjusting to an inflationary surge, and Canada is scrambling to negotiate country to country free trade agreements as Trump pulls the US back inside its borders.

The plans to fight the climate change issue is in jeopardy, while Trump is threatening the solidarity of NATO. The shift to globalization is in shambles. So, just wait till Trump has the actual power of the presidency.

he new council held their first meeting on Nov. 8th. Regular council meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at the Town Office commencing at 7:00 P.M. Council passed a resolution to add various unpaid accounts to taxes as of Dec. 31, 2016.

squith Town Council held its regular council meeting on November 9, 2016. All council members took their oath of office.

Attending the Council meeting were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Sue Sawicki, Harold Edwards, Dylan Claypool, Jordan Claypool, Ted Goodnough, and Jerome Rogan. Foreman Darren Kraft also attended to give reports, and C.A.O. Holly Cross was also attending.

A motion was made to accept the treasurer's statement of expenditures and receipts for the month of October, as well as the September and October bank reconciliations as presented.

Council made a resolution to accept the accounts paid of $24,289.22 and accounts payable of $159,274.74, as presented.

The Asquith Fire Department has broken ground for the Asquith Fire Hall addition, readying the ground for piles and to hopefully have the shell of the building constructed. The Asquith Fire Department is still selling Asquith Fire Department Cookbooks as a fundraiser. This would be a wonderful Christmas gift for that person who is hard to buy for! Cookbooks are available

at the Town office, Asquith Co-op, Asquith Hotel, Asquith General Store, or the Britannia Restaurant.

The Town of Asquith has contracted Dave Anderson Exteriors to repair the roof of the old water plant for a cost of five thousand six hundred and seventy dollars.

The Town of Asquith has offered two thousand dollars to the owner of 565 Charles Street to correct and mitigate drainage problems that may have resulted from the construction of East Avenue. A length of culvert will also be supplied to extend the driveway.

The driveway at 620 Charles Street will be extended for a cost of seven hundred and fifty dollars.

Three headstones at the cemetery were repaired.

Council appointed Sue Sawicki as the DeputyMayor of the Town of Asquith.

Lorna Gutsch was appointed to sit on the Asquith Recreation Committee.

The Town of Asquith accepted the resignation of Crystal Hitchings from and the appointment of Candace Dirkzwager to the Asquith & District Rink Board. The Asquith Rink Board presented its yearly financial report for October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016. They had a small loss of fewer than fifty dollars for the year thanks to the volunteer Board members working so hard at various fundraisers. It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of man hours to keep the Asquith Rink afloat year to year, and anyone who is interested in volunteering some time or getting involved can contact the Town office and you will be put in contact with a Rink Board member.

The Asquith Town Office will be closed for Christmas holidays from December 23, 2016 to December 27, 2016. The office will also be closed Monday, January 2, 2017. A reminder goes out to all that taxes are due on December 31, 2016.

Any taxes paid after this date will be subject to a 15% penalty. Cheques postdated for December 30th/31st will be accepted by the Town office in case you are concerned about forgetting to pay your taxes during the holiday rush.

The Town of Asquith Council resolved to donate one hundred and fifty dollars to the 4-H Centennial Campaign.

Direction was also given to C.A.O. Cross to apply for the Canada Day Grant for 2017.

Councillor Sue Sawicki gave a report to Council regarding her semi-annual meeting in October with the Wheatland Regional Library. The financials and information received at this meeting will be posted on the Asquith Town Office bulletin board for those interested in perusing it.

Operation Santa is in full swing now and food donations are accepted at most businesses, churches, Lord Asquith School, Seniors Center and the post office. Cash donations will be accepted at the Asquith Town office and a charitable donation receipt will be provided. All hamper requests must be turned in by December 9, 2016, either at the Asquith town office or at the Asquith post office.

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY

he first meeting for new council was held November 9; all councilors took their oaths of office.

Back lane pick up is now done for the year.

There have been complaints filed in the office regarding cats, whether strays or family pets. Although the Village has no bylaw to control cats in the Village, they will be treated as nuisances and the owners of the cats can be fined for allowing their cat to affect the safety, health or welfare of people in the neighborhood or to affect someone’s use and enjoyment of their property. Bylaw Enforcement has been contacted to speak to anyone who allows their cat to roam and cause a nuisance.

Water and sewer arrears that remain unpaid at year end will be added to the tax roll of the property, and become subject to the 10% penalty added as of January 1; as well as any property taxes that remain unpaid at year end will be subject to the same penalty.

Dog Licenses are due in January - $15 Business Licenses are due in January - $50 Council has decided to do something a little different this year for the Christmas Decorating Contest. Residents are to email a photo of their decorated house to vanscoy@sasktel.net and be entered in a draw to win a $200 gift card. Email photos must be received no later than Wednesday, December 21 @ 5:00 pm. The draw will be made that evening.

Family Favorites from your Community SPICED NUTS 2 C. mixed nuts or peanuts 1 egg white slightly beaten 5 Tbsp. sugar 4 Tsp, cinnamon 1 C raisins 1/2 Tsp. salt Combine nuts &egg white. Toss until coated Combine sugar & cinnamon. Sprinkle on nuts.

Sir until well coated. Spread on baking sheet.

Bake @ 325F for 20 minutes, stir once or twice. Stir in raisins. Sprinkle with salt.

Cool. Store covered.

Bonnie Cenaiko POPPYCOCK 1 1/3 cups white sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 10-12 cups popped corn 1 cup margarine 1 tsp vanilla 1 can mixed nuts (optional)

Mixture...

3/4 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon orange zest 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional) Combine the above ingredients.

To make cider (makes 1 serving): 1/4 cup mixture 1 cup apple juice (can use cranberry juice) 1/4 cup water.

Place the ingredients into a small pot.

Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.

Drain artichoke hearts, put in food processor.

Add mayonnaise, cheese, lemon juice and garlic. Mix well.

Pour mixture into an ovenproof dish.

Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees, uncovered.

Serve with toasted baguette slices.

3 eggs 3/4 C. Sugar 2/3 C. pumpkin 3/4 C all-purpose flour 1 Tsp. baking powder 1 Tsp. cinnamon 1/2 Tsp. ginger 1/2 Tsp. nutmeg 1/2 Tsp. salt Filling: 8 Oz. cream cheese, softened 1/4 C. butter or margarine 1 C. icing sugar 1/2 Tsp. vanilla Grease a 10x15" jelly-roll pan or a cookie sheet and line with waxed paper.

In a large bowl, combine eggs and sugar, beating with an electric mixer until thick and light yellow in colour. Add pumpkin, mixing until blended.

In separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices and salt. Add to egg mixture, mixing well. Spread batter int prepared pan.

Bake @ 375F for 15 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven. Place cake on a clean damp tea towel sprinkled liberally with icing sugar. Remove wax paper and cool 10 minutes. From the 10 inch side, roll cake and tea towel together. Set aside until cool.

While cake is cooling, prepare filling. Beat together cream cheese and butter. Stir in icing sugar and vanilla and blend until smooth.

Unroll cake, and evenly spread filling on top.

Roll up cake (without towel). Wrap in plastic wrap. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Slice before serving. Keep leftovers refrigerated.

Serves 10. Freezes well.

Bake at 350F for 15 minutes, stirr once during.

Serve warm with crackers, sliced raw veggies.

3/4 C. shortening 1 C. sugar 2 eggs 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 2 T. milk 2 1/4 C. sifted flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. soda 1 C. chopped pecans 1 C. dates, cut fine 1/3 C. maraschino cherries Preheat oven to 375.

Combine shortening and sugar. Cream well.

Add salt, vanilla, milk, and eggs.

Add sifted dry ingredients and mix well.

Fold in fruit and nuts.

Rollin balls using 1 tablespoon for each.

Bake 10 - 12 minutes.

Debbie Rolston MEXICAN SPICED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES (just spicey enough to balance the chocolate) 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips (350 g), divided 1 cup butter (or margarine) 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup lightly packed brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp. each instant coffee granules and vanilla 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Preheat oven to 350F Melt 1 cup chocolate chips; cool Beat butter, sugars, eggs Stir coffee granules with vanilla; beat into butter mixture Blend in melted chocolate chips In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and cayenne pepper Add to butter mixture; stir just until blended Stir in remaining chocolate chips Line baking sheets with parchment paper, or butter lightly Drop dough onto baking sheets by spoonful, 1 inch apart Bake for 10 minutes, or until set but still soft Cool for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely Makes about 48 cookies Lynn Bayne

The Writer’s Corner A G S ERVICES D IVISION 306 - 493 - 2408 Thank you to the Grade Nine Students of Delisle Composite School for sharing their creativity Winter Dream The wind is soft. The flow of air whistles through the trees that glisten in the sunrise from the fresh snow of the night’s storm. The view of mountains that reached high into the clouds above. The snow is thick under my feet. I look around me and see that the snow is untouched, lying perfectly and still. The trees stand tall and covered in snow. Icicles hanging and reflecting the light of the sunrise. The deep blue icy river winds through in turns and beyond towards the mountains. The pounding of the river is calming, and soothing to the ear.

I start to smell something fresh from behind me. I turn to see a log cabin with lights that give me the sense of warm and welcoming.

Snow was also covering the pointed roof. My mouth started to water as my eyes flickered to the window sill where a single pie, freshly baked, was there sitting. I start to walk and realize I’m barefoot. I feel the snow crumpling under each step and feel the cold bite at my toes. I get to the door and my body shivers, the heat was emanating from the house. I know and the door opens and I’m blinded by the light. And that’s when I woke up on the first winter day.

Sparkling snowflakes of all different shapes and sizes softly fall from the sky. They blanket the ground with fresh, beautiful snow, and the trees covered in extravagant frost. The snow made the outside look like a beautiful winter wonderland. It was a truly glorious day for Christmas time cheer.

Inside the house, the splendid smell of gingerbread cookies and warm hot chocolate filled the air. Mother must’ve begun to bake cookies for later when the rest of the family would come over to celebrate Christmas with us this year. I always enjoyed spending Christmas with all my family.

I entered the kitchen to see mother beginning to make dinner for later that night. I decided to offer decorate the cookies she had made to give her one less thing to do. I decorated them with bright Christmassy colours as well as lots of sprinkles. After I was finally done decorating, I observed my colourful creations. They looked marvelous, I was sure the rest of the family would love them. Just as the cookies were done, my father on cue as always came to taste one of the cookies. With a mouth full of cookie, he assured me they tasted just as good as they looked.

It was always really fun to sit around the fire and tell stories while drinking hot chocolate with cute little mini marshmallows. Christmas to me wasn’t ever about the gifts, or the food, for me it was about seeing all of my family and being able to spend time visiting with them. To spend time laughing, joking and overall just being together. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.

It was Christmas Day, December 25, 2016.

The air was still. There was no wind at all.

The glittering, white snow was perfectly placed on the ground. Nothing stirred. All the trees were frozen in place with snow clinging to the branches. A girl was walking home on the icy road. She was on her way home to see her loving family. She had a long gray coat and a royal blue toque on. The girl could see her own breath as she exhaled. She was walking in silence when she heard a quiet noise behind her. She stopped dead in her tracks and turned around slowly. There was a beautiful doe standing just off of the road. The deer was sniffing curiously at the road. The girl realized she was holding her breath because she let out a breath of relief when she saw the peaceful creature. As she watched the animal, she thought about how nature was so amazing. The deer looked up and stared directly at her. Then, it bowed its head back down like it wasn’t scared of her at all. It kept walking and soon it disappeared into the barren forest. The girl stood there for a moment, smiling. Then she turned around and kept walking on the ice covered winter road.

Leaning over the window sill I pressed my warm hands against the glass, clearing a small hole for me to peer through, I saw the empty waste land covered in a thick sheet of fluffy snow. The sun was just rising which left a pinkish orange glow just above the horizon. In the distance I could see the tall and thick mountains row by row standing tall with pride. The canaries flew under and over thick snowy branches so swiftly my eyes could barely keep up. To the left of me I saw a doe and two little fawns prancing along the dark oak wood fence. I always enjoyed watching the deer graze and pick at the snow looking for the sweet grass to eat underneath, it was calming. Pulling on my winter gear I stepped outside, the crisp and cool air hitting my face as I breathed in the fresh scent of pine. Smoke blared out of the old chimney on top of the snow covered roof, icicles clung to the veranda as if they were waiting to fall into a snowy abyss. To the right of me I could see beautiful dark brown horses holding their heads up high with great pride and stomping their feet. I stood there for a moment and took in the splendour around me.

The sun rises high atop the misty frostbitten peaks on Christmas day. The sky is painted a piercing pink and blue and dark storm clouds saunter their way into the horizon. On the right a lone log cabin is preparing for the impending blizzard. A small pillar of smoke billows out of its chimney signaling the only present humans in this enchanted landscape.

Beside the cabin a forest of pines trickle their way down into the mist-filled valley that runs the length of the mountain range. Snow covers every inch of the ground and is deep enough to hide a person. Between the cabin and the forest tracks of skies run all the way down and into the valley. A brown wooden fence disembodies the abandoned track from the wilderness. No animals or humans can be seen but their past adventures is written in the snow and is cemented into the northern landscape. Closer to the cabin the aroma of smoke fills the air as a family huddles close to warm up. As I walk away from the cabin, the sounds of animals going about their busy days shows life in the forest. Small tufts of snow billow of trees as small rodents collect their food or escape predators. The scenery came alive in the early hours of Christmas.

Around Christmas time, on a white fluffy snow day the Lee Family gathered together in the living room. They were watching Frosty the Snowman on their newly bought television. Frosty the Snowman was the Lee family’s favorite movie and every year they were so inspired by it to go make joyous snowmen outside. As the Lee family was walking outside they were followed by their two adorable Black Lab puppies Coal and Lucy.

The Lee’s were so thrilled to build a fluffy original snowman. They’ve been waiting to build since the beginning of summer. They first started by rolling out the beginning of the snowman. Yesterday, the Lee family’s farm got a fresh soft layer of pristine snow. They then rolled the second, and the third and piled them on top of one another. They found a couple random stones under the fresh white snow and used them to make a face. This concluded by getting Father’s hat and scarf to put on the snowman.

They then found a couple random sticks around the farm and used them as the snowman’s arms. They were just about to go inside when Coal brought out a bright orange carrot from the fridge. After putting the vivid carrot on the snowman’s face, they went inside and enjoyed a cup of dark rich hot chocolate.

DELISLE COMPOSITE SCHOOL Delisle Composite school wishes everyone a happy holiday. It’s a busy time here at DCS with volleyball ending and basketball starting up. Handbells is underway with practices every other Wednesday. Our Prairie Spirit West Band will be holding our annual winter concert on December 14th at Lakeview church in Saskatoon. Come out and enjoy some great music!

Health Promoting schools (HPS) has started at DCS. Every Thursday students will be offered a morning snack. Thank you to the following people & organizations: Thomas Fresh for donating the weekly fruit, Ms. Kornish for picking up the fruit, Staff and students that prepare the fruit. HPS is looking for more students to become involved in the program. On Thursday, November 10th we held our annual Remembrance Day ceremony. This year it was a joint ceremony between high school and the elementary school. Thank you to all the legion members who came out to be a part of our ceremony. A special thank you to Mr. Robert McRae, a recently retired military member who shared with us what Remembrance Day means to him. Another special thank you to Ms. Doris Pattison who also shared what Remembrance Day means to her. Thank you to all the students who were involved in the ceremony as M.C’s wreath carries, color guard party, and readers. Everyone did a fantastic job. Last but not least thank you to the staff members that planned this ceremony together. DCS will be hosting a Career Day on January 6th. Delisle Elementary “Be the Change Club” Tackles Hunger

T

he Be the Change Club at Delisle Elementary School is a group of grade 5 and 6 students that are devoted to helping make our community and world a better place. They are participating in a campaign called We Scare Hunger to tackle the issue of food insecurity. In order to help our community they have been collecting non-perishable food in 3 drop-off boxes around Delisle, located at the Co-op, the rink and the elementary school. Please donate your food by December 16th.

Some of the food collected will be donated to The Lighthouse in Saskatoon.

The remainder will be dropped off at the Freedom Fooders pantry located at Yoga One in Saskatoon.

The Freedom Fooders are a group of people in Saskatoon who recognize that many people in the community are not receiving the food sources that they need.

They have created accessible pantries for anyone to donate food if they are able, or take food if they needed. There is a quote on the pantry that reads, "Have food? Leave food. Need food? Take food."

Please contribute before December 16th.

The We Scare Hunger Campaign, is part of the WE organization that promotes various campaigns aimed at improving life around the planet.

PIKE LAKE SCHOOL We are gearing up with preparations for the upcoming Christmas season and all the special festivities that pair up with this most magical time of the year.

There has been a bustle of activity since the Halloween activities are now behind us.

We held our first new and innovative hot meal that was prepared by the students, alongside some wonderfully supportive parent volunteers. The cooking skills, competence, and confidence students brought to hot meal were evident to the parent volunteers as we prepared the delicious meal. This excellent day of hands on learning and curriculum integration is a wonderful example of our vision and beliefs at Pike Lake School.

We sincerely thank all those who came and participated in this novel day.

Now that we have had some great experience at cooking a meal for us all, we would like to invite you, our community, to a FREE Winter Feast to be held on Thursday, January 26th at Pike Lake Hall. If you want to experience the way teaching and learning is now happening at our school, we invite you to join us.

You can choose the option of coming in and helping the students as they prepare the meal and then enjoy the lunch, or perhaps you would just like to attend the meal the students have prepared and enjoy it in the company of friends. Both options are FREE, we just kindly ask that you contact the school by phone at 306-

We held parent/teacher interviews which relayed positive parent feedback about our new approach to teaching and learning and how it has impacted their child. Our students are doing some great things this year and it was nice to be able to share these successes and affirmations.

We have happily begun practicing for our Christmas concert entitled, “Santa’s Holiday Hoedown.” Our school concert is open to the public and we warmly invite you to join us for one (or both) performances on Thursday, December 15th at 11:00 a.m. or at 7:00 pm.

You can be sure it will be an entertaining evening for the young and the old and is bound to put you in a festive mood. See you there.

34th Annual Pike Lake Bird Count takes place on January 2, 2017

O

rganized by the Saskatoon Nature Society and the last of the Christmas counts, volunteers will again visit acreages in the Pike Lake area to conduct the annual Christmas Bird Count. I would like to thank landowners who have welcomed us on previous counts and we look forward to our brief visit on Monday, January 2, 2017.

We usually spend only a few minutes at each site.

This provides a snapshot of bird trends and numbers.

Data is submitted to Bird Studies Canada (BSC) a national non-profit organization, whose mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habits. It is affiliated with the Audubon Society and Cornell University.

Large-scale public participation in Bird Studies Canada programs is essential. Scientists and volunteers work together, gathering data. That is where the Saskatoon Nature Society comes in. The Saskatoon Nature Society, a charitable organization founded in 1955, brings together those interested in the natural world. Our objective is to promote the appreciation of nature and encourage a deeper knowledge of it through observation and sharing of experience.

Monthly meetings are held from September to April with talks, films and slide presentations on topics related to nature. Three or more guided field trips are held each month in spring, summer and fall with occasional trips in winter, providing opportunities to observe birds, mammals, insects and plants in the company of other naturalists.

INSURANCE IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR VACATION

G

oing away for vacation or planning to enjoy your winter somewhere warm?

There are several insurance related items you need to consider prior to departure, regarding your home, auto and medical insurance.

Your home insurance has coverage conditions or warranties that must be met when you are leaving home for an extended period of time. Cold winter temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst, putting your home at serious risk of water damage in the event of a heating system failure. A standard policy requirement is when you are gone for more than 4 days then you must do at least one of the following: 1) turn off water supply and drain all pipes, fixtures, appliances 2) have someone competent and reliable check on your property daily 3) have your home electronically monitored 24 hours per

day by a company that monitors and responds to a low temperature signal.

You should also take some simple steps to secure your property from burglars. It's important to make your home appear inhabited while you are away. You can enlist the help of trusted neighbours, family and friends.

You can tell your neighbours when you will be away and who they should expect to visit in your absence (including any vehicle description, names and emergency contact numbers). Don't talk about your vacation plans with strangers or service people. Lock your doors and windows, and make arrangements to have snow cleared.

If you plan to operate a motor vehicle while travelling then consider additional automobile liability coverage. Your basic SGI licence plate provides only the legal minimum $200,000 liability limit.

An automobile policy (Auto Pak) protects you and your family when $200,000 from the licence plate isn’t enough. If you travel outside Saskatchewan, then you’re at higher risk of being sued after an accident that causes severe injury or death for potentially far more than $200,000! Consider adding the “Journey” option, a 30 day coverage bundle that can be added to your existing annual Auto Pak policy which increases liability to $5 million and $2,000 loss of use for only $30 (great solution for those renting a vehicle in USA).

Travel medical insurance protects you from expensive medical emergencies (such as hospitalization, surgery or ambulance costs) along with trip cancellation (for prepaid vacation expenses). Travel insurance contains exclusions that should be carefully reviewed in detail, especially relating to pre-

ver the past few weeks all opposition parties have been challenging the government on what we believe to be deeply unethical behaviour by the Prime Minister and his Ministers.

Consider the following.

The Minister of Justice held a private fundraiser in Toronto with lawyers that have regular dealings with the Justice Department. The price to get in was $500 per person. At the same time, the Minister of Finance is regularly holding $1500 a person fundraisers with representatives from financial institutions.

These are what are commonly known as cash for access events. At least 80 of these have taken place over the past year.

Cash for access is troublesome. It’s naïve to think that stakeholders are paying up to $1500 to meet with Ministers to talk about the weather.

In defense of these actions, the Government House Leader, the Honourable Bardish Chagger has repeated over and over that the government always follows the rules and I quote: “When we follow the rules, no conflict of interest can exist.”

This statement is problematic for at least two reasons.

First, ethics are a moral understanding of what is right and wrong while acting within the law.

Each individual has a different understanding of what is ethical and unethical.

Something can be legal and within the law while still being deeply unethical. For example, while legal, it is unethical to sell a car knowing it has defects. It may be legal to charge someone the maximum allowable donation ($1500 per year) to attend an event, but unethical if you are giving preferential access to a Minister for that donation.

Second, Members of Parliament are responsible to set the rules that govern political fundraising. Nothing stops the Liberal government from introducing legislation to change the law on cash for access if they believe they are inadequate. The Liberals obviously believe the law is adequate as is.

While the Liberals may be following the letter of

existing medical conditions. Most policies do not cover travelers for conditions that existed prior to departure unless they are "stable". You must understand the definition of "stable" in your policy.

Unfortunately, from the Prime Minister on down to his cabinet, these instructions have been ignored. It has become clear over the past few weeks that they aren’t worth the weight of the paper they were printed on.

n the 1st day of winter feeding my Forage Specialist said to me, “Did you submit one feed test for each of your hay, grain, and stockpiled forages?”

On the 2rd day of winter feeding my farm supplier sold to me two electric fencers in order to set up temporary paddocks that only supply 3 days of corn grazing at a time to decrease the risk of acidosis/grain overloading.

On the 3rd day of winter feeding my Livestock Specialist gave to me three complete winter ration programs, one for the mature cows, one for the bred replacement heifers, and one for the older thin cows since the nutritional requirements of these groups are different.

On the 4th day of winter feeding I purchased four

cone-style round bale feeders to aid in preventing hay waste and spoilage when feeding whole bales.

On the 5th day of winter feeding I made sure my five off site watering systems were winter ready and able to guarantee a fresh supply of water to my livestock, helping to prevent them from breaking through the dugout and creek ice.

On the 6th day of winter feeding the posts were placed for six temporary, small paddocks in order to efficiently swath graze my annual crop with maximum swath utilization and minimum waste.

On the 7th day of winter feeding there were seven loads of pellets delivered to the farm in order to supplement feeding poorer quality hay that

was overly mature when cut, resulting in decreased protein and digestibility.

On the 8th day of winter feeding eight portable windbreaks were hauled to the pasture to provide shelter when using infield feeding systems. The portable windbreaks will be moved frequently to avoid manure build up and potential nutrient hot spots.

On the 9h day of winter feeding I ordered nine bags of salt and minerals as my rations required supplementation. Feed tests help to identify the amount and type of salt and mineral supplementation my animals will require.

On the 10th day of winter feeding I checked the 10 bales that were currently being bale grazed to en-

sure the cattle were cleaning them up sufficiently, and that they were spaced to allow for good manure and nutrient distribution.

On the 11th day of winter feeding my Forage Specialist gave to me a Forage Challenge Handbook to submit my 11 feed tests into the contest for a chance to win a prize!

The deadline is January 27, 2017 for entry.

On the 12th day of winter feeding my Regional Forage and Livestock Specialists invited me to contact them or the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377, 12 months out of the year, to help answer any production related questions that I may have.

avid Anderson, Opposition Critic for Agriculture and Agri-food was pleased to see the Bovine Tuberculosis (Bovine TB) issue become a priority for both the House of Commons and Senate Agriculture committees.

During the Senate Question Period on Wednes-

day, November 23rd, Health Minister Hon. Jane Philpott supported a study on the TB situation and agreed to work with members of the Liberal government to look at compensation for ranchers affected by the TB. The proposal to hold a Special Committee meeting on TB was brought forward by Hon. Claude Carignan, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.

On Thursday November 24th, the Liberal members on the House of Commons Agriculture Committee reversed their earlier opposition and

agreed to hear from Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on the issue of Bovine Tuberculosis.

“We hope to see the CFIA come with the Minister to Committee next week to provide answers on the crisis,” Anderson said.

At the House Committee on Agriculture on Thursday, November 24th, the Committee also sent a letter to Minister MacAulay on behalf of the House of Commons Agriculture Committee.

The letter asks for an increase in CFIA resources

for the investigation, cooperation with provincial authorities and local veterinarians on the TB testing process, and compensation for additional costs for ranchers due to the mandatory CFIA quarantine.

"I am glad to see both the House and Senate working together on this important issue. I look forward to this situation being resolved as quickly as possible for ranchers and producers affected by Bovine TB," said Mr. Anderson.
