Hanley Receives Jays Care Foundation Grant

H

anley Minor Ball successfully secured a grant from the Jays Care Foundation to upgrade and refurbish the David Prosofsky Memorial North Diamond. The funding allows the small-town grassroots organization to bring significant enhancements to its local baseball infrastructure.

The Jays Care Foundation is the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays. Through their "Field Of Dreams" program, they partner with TD to build, enhance, and refurbish local baseball diamonds across Canada, providing safe and inclusive spaces for youth to play.

The program focuses heavily on making baseball more accessible and ensuring that children have the opportunity to grow through sports.

Last year Hanley was 1 of 15 recipient communities to get the funds amounting in $1.5 million across the country.

Down the Road by Brian Brannagan Life Has Rules

Mike figures that just the fact that he woke up in the morning makes it a pretty darn good day - he didn’t need his heart attack to get the picture, he says, but it sure provided a much sharper focus. And though Mike says he's grateful to wake up each morning, he also says that he’s had a good life. "I'm not afraid of dying," he says, "I just hope it's quick."

And there comes the rub - the quick part. What does 'quick' mean? Most of us, I would think, wouldn't mind 'quick' as long as 'quick' doesn't mean 'sudden'. Most of us would like at least a chance to compose ourselves - pull our socks up, tuck our shirts in, get our 'game face' on. Perhaps even a final 'sayonara' - time permitting, of course.

Life has rules - lots of rules. Three of the more important ones are: - Don't kiss a girl who’s leaning away from you.

- Don't climb a fence that’s leaning toward you.

- Don't ever turn down a donut.

And as important as those rules are, there are other even more important rules, such as, for example: - Be careful what you take for granted.

A Wills and Estate lawyer, commenting on end-of-life procedures, suggests we can prepare for this, a sudden departure, by writing 'good-bye' letters in advance, letters to be opened after our death advising loved ones how we feel about them, how much we care for them.

This is an excellent idea with a lot of merit but it's not without some drawbacks.

Because what you take for granted is like the rug you're standing on that you forget is there - when that rug gets pulled out from underneath you, the reminder can be painful. And sometimes we can take things so much for granted that even rational thought gets waylaid.

Such was the case for the customer of the municipal utilities department where I used to work. The electricity utility had a very stringent protocol for cutting off electrical service for non-payment. The utility was careful not to cut off electricity in the winter months and always bent over backwards to accommodate to the customer's situation.

But after repeated attempts to collect payment had failed, and without explanation from the customer, the electricity utility sent a work crew out to physically disconnect the power. The work crew was directed, as per protocol, to knock on the customer’s door and offer a final opportunity to make arrangements for payment.

The customer, a middle-aged man, seemingly no stranger to his couch, came to the door and apologized, explaining he had been able to pay only one bill that month and had thought it more important to pay his cable TV bill than his electricity bill. You might say that he didn’t quite get the picture.

And just like you can't watch TV without electricity, no matter how many cable TV channels you have, you can't have a good day, a bad day or any kind of day at all if you don't first wake up in the morning. Waking up in the morning is crucial, it's the most important thing you will do all day - it's not to be taken for granted.

Mike is the guy who comes by every week to take our garbage away. Mike is well aware of his priorities and what he should and shouldn’t be taking for granted he didn't need a heart attack as a reminder but a heart attack is what he got. Mike is in his early 60’s, a good guy and straight forward - an “it is what it is” kind of guy. He is a serious fellow but he always says hello with a smile and a strong hand shake and he has a ready laugh.

Mike is back at work now but instead of working alone, he just drives the truck and has a helper to do the heavy lifting, toting and dumping that he used to do.

He's hoping to get back to his golf game before the summer goes away. And he quit smoking as a result of his heart issues, saying he doesn’t miss it at all (I think he might be fudging the truth a little on that one).

Most people have a hard time verbally expressing their feelings and emotions never mind having to commit them to the written word. So writing them out is going to be work, probably hard work. It's going to be even more work if you want to leave letters for several people. And if you are writing more than one letter, are the people who don't get a letter going to feel left out and resent you for it? Probably not the final message you want to leave. Also, because you never know how far in advance (of your demise) that you’re writing the letters, the lawyer suggests that you might have to update them from time to time. Ah, jeez - more work.

Maybe your feelings of love are better shown than written about. Because if it is true that actions speak louder than words, then surely it follows that today's actions speak way louder than tomorrow's words. But then again, action is just substituting a six-letter word for a four-letter word - still comes out as work.

There is an additional option, though, one which minimizes the work load and also, in their struggle to say nice things about you at your funeral, saves somebody from having to perjure themselves.

That additional option is to write your own obituary (no pesky little perjury charges for you - you'd be out of jurisdiction). This suggestion comes from the web site obitkit.com where for a very modest sum you can purchase a how-to manual on writing your obituary yourself. The guide provides instructive examples and suggestions, helping you to say what you want, to whoever you want, covering all your bases with just one document. The website proclaims that it will show you how to put the "fun" into "funeral". (Although one might wonder, "fun" for who?)

Whatever you decide, the letter route, the action-option or going with ObitKit, you have the advantage of having the last word. Let it be a nice one, preferably nothing along the lines of “your meat loaf was always too dry”. And perhaps something a little more explicit than a “thumbs up” emoji.

Just suggestions - it's your call - but whatever you do, it might be wise to do it now.

Because that is another life rule: Don't take tomorrow for granted.

Secretary of State Belanger announces expansion of high-speed Internet access in Saskatchewan Federal investment of over $141 million will help connect more than 30,000 homes to high-speed internet

July 24, 2026 – Humboldt, Saskatchewan Reliable and affordable high-speed Internet is essential for all Canadians. It enables access to important online resources, connects friends and families, and drives economic growth and innovation. This is why the Government of Canada is helping bring high-speed Internet access to underserved communities—including Indigenous communities—in Saskatchewan.

Today, the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development, announced over $141 million in federal funding for six projects to bring high-speed Internet access to more than 30,000 households in over 500 rural and remote communities across Saskatchewan.

This funding is provided through the Universal Broadband Fund, a program designed to ensure that Canadians in rural, remote and Indigenous communities have access to reliable high-speed Internet.

The Government of Canada has committed to ensuring that every household in Canada has access to high-speed Internet by 2030, and it is on track to meet this connectivity target. These projects will build toward that goal, and the government will continue to invest in infrastructure that creates new opportunities and makes sure communities can benefit from all of Canada’s potential.

“High-speed Internet is no longer just a luxury—it’s essential infrastructure, no matter where you live in Canada. It’s how people access health care virtually, start a business or just stay in touch with their loved ones. TOWN OF DELISLE

ouncil held a regular meeting on July 9th, 2026 during which the following items were addressed: Jatin Saini was appointed as the new Chief Administrative Officer with a starting date of July 27th, 2026. Mark Dubkowski was appointed as Mentor Councillor Brunett was assigned as a secondary signing authority for the purpose of approving online payments Council agreed to apply for the Build Communities Strong Fund for funding assistance for the East Subdivision Phase 1 residential development project September 21st to 27th was proclaimed as Rail Safety Week Council directed Administration to send a letter to the Minister of Crown Investments Corporation, supporting a provincial ride-sharing framework Council supported the “Message from the Mayor” and authorized it’s publication Council agreed to support the High School’s request for a hockey academy and agreed to adjust non-prime ice rates to $125 per hour in support of the request.

Council approved Zamboni repairs quoted by Fer Marc in the amount of $11,492.27 (includes taxes).

Council agreed to the proposed playschool lease agreement for use of the Hall as presented and supported their request for gratuitous use of the hall for their annual Christmas concert.

Council excluded from the List of Lands in arrears those lands with tax arrears not exceeding ½ of the previous year’s levy.

Council approved the List of Lands in Arrears and directed that the list should be advertised.

Council approved the new arena booking and cancellation policy, as presented, and authorized a 5% discount for local user groups during the period of time the schedule is locked down between October 15th and February 1st.

Bylaw 9-2026, being a bylaw for the Business Tax Abatement Incentive Bylaw, was read three times and adopted, introducing tax abatement incentives for both new builds and expansions.

he Town of Asquith held its regular council meeting on July 8th, 2026.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, at 6:15 p.m.

The Annual Water Quality and Compliance Report and Water Works Information Sheet were presented. Both can be found on our website.

Council approved opening a SUMAInvest account with $100,000.00 from operating reserves, pending SMB approval.

The Canada Day Celebration was a well-attended success. Council and administration thank all volunteers and sponsors for their generous contributions.

The biological filtration conversion at the water treatment plant is ongoing, with full conversion expected by September.

Local RM Councils host BBQ’s for community ratepayers

n Friday, July 24, the RM of Vanscoy hosted a BBQ for the local ratepayers. The event was held in the RM shop and was very well attended.

Catering was provided by Prairie Smoke & Spice,

and included roast beef, apple cider slaw and their signature BBQ Pit beans.

The RM of Eagle Creek also hosted a ratepayers BBQ on July 22 at the Arelee Hall

Council Notice to Ratepayers Council has approved the 2026 municipal property tax rates, including a reduction in the municipal mill rate and changes to residential tax class factors designed to provide tax relief while maintaining essential municipal services.

For 2026, Council has set the municipal mill rate at 3.5 mills, down from 4.1 mills in 2025. In addition, the residential mill rate factor has been reduced from 1.40 to 1.20, while the agricultural and commercial/industrial factors remain unchanged at 1.05 and 1.95, respectively.

The Town of Delisle now has a new Administrator

T

he Town of Delisle has a new administrator as of July 27, 2026. Jatin Saini comes to us by way of the Village of Berwyn in Alberta where he served as Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). He brings municipal administration experience and is looking forward to contributing to Delisle’s strategic plan. We believe he will be a great asset to our existing team.

Jatin stated “I am honoured to join the Town of Delisle as Chief Administrative Officer and look for-

ward to becoming part of this welcoming community. With a background in Civil Engineering and Municipal Administration, I have developed a passion for local government and helping communities grow through responsible planning, strong governance, and collaboration. Field of STARS Raises Incredible $725,000 in Support of Emergency Critical Care Transport SASKATOON, July 22, 2026 – Last night, the Canadian agriculture community joined forces with STARS to raise meaningful funds at the 9th annual Field of STARS presented by Pioneer, held in conjunction with Ag in Motion.

The Field of STARS event raised an incredible $725,000 in support of STARS. Funds raised from the event help ensure STARS helicopters and personnel are able to continue STARS mission of providing critical care and transport on patients’ worst days.

Over the past nine years, the hardworking agriculture community raised over $4 Million in support of the helicopter air ambulance charity.

“Farmers are the cornerstone of Canada. The work they do is hard, relentless, and matters deeply,” said Dr. John Froh, president and CEO, STARS. “Despite their around the clock hours, Saskatchewan’s agriculture community found the time and resources to support STARS tonight.

It is with deep gratitude that we

thank them for their meaningful contributions, which helps keep STARS in the sky.”

At the event, STARS Very Important Patient (VIP), Chad Rogers, shared his STARS story of tragedy and resilience. Rogers was baling hay when he stopped at a gate and the tractor’s weak emergency brake clicked off. He ran after it but couldn’t climb up the ladder in time, and the tractor and 907-kg baler ran over him.

“Since my accident, I have often asked myself what we did in critical emergency medical situations before we had STARS, and the only answer I can come up with is that people died or did not get a chance at the recovery that I had,” Rogers said.

Roger’s moving story, as well as the community’s support of Field of STARS, and presenting sponsor Pioneer’s generosity, made the profound evening possible. Guests left knowing their contributions made a real difference in delivering critical care when and where it is needed most.

anscoy & District Agricultural Society will be hosting our 43rd Fair on Saturday, Sept.

12th at the Delisle Community Centre! Fair catalogues are now available at local businesses or online at vanscoyag.com. All are welcome to enter exhibits, we have categories for all! The fair is all about coming together as a community to share our talents and have some fun. If you are new to the Fair, please reach out and we can help guide you.

Exhibit drop off will be at the Delisle Community Centre on Friday, Sept 11th from 5-7:30pm. The exhibit hall will open for viewing at 11am on Saturday! We will also have a gaming bus nearby and free family bingo in the afternoon at the Town Hall.

Thank you to the Seniors at the Community Centre for allowing us to use their facility, the Town of Delisle and to the Delisle Recreation Association for having us be part of the festivities at Fall Fest.

In other updates, We would like to congratulate Justin Rogers, from Asquith, on being our grade 12 bursary recipient! We wish him all the best in his upcoming school year.

Our bi-annual Safety Day event is coming up on Friday, September 25th in Delisle. This event is for grade 3 and 4 students in our district and is a valuable part of teaching our youth how to be safe both in town and on the farm. Access Communications Releases 2026 Community Impact Report: "Wired to Care" REGINA, SK – Access Communications Co-operative has released its 2026 Community Impact Report, Wired to Care, highlighting the co-operative's investment in the people and communities it serves through the Access Communications Children's Fund (ACCF), Community Programming, and Corporate Initiatives and Sponsorships.

In 2025, the ACCF donated $349,045 to 64 nonprofit and community-based organizations across Access's service areas, supporting children who are at risk, in need, or among the most vulnerable. The Fund also marked 20 years of the Access Communications Children's Fund TV Bingo, a Saturday night tradition that has aired more than 1,000 episodes since it launched in February 2006.

The report also details a year of record-setting fundraising across Access's broadcast partnerships. The Regina Humane Society Telethon ($105,000) the Weyburn Communithon ($101,500), and the Estevan United Way Telethon ($415,000) each set new fundraising records in 2025, broadcast live on AccessNow TV. The 18th annual Access Communications Labour Day Show N Shine raised $50,260 for the Regina Food Bank, bringing the event's total contribution to more than $420,000, or over 1.25 million meals, since 2006. Access also awarded $27,000 in scholarships to Saskatchewan high school seniors and students at the University of Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Asquith Better Life Recreation Centre Report

he July edition of our BLRA article was set aside so there was room for the pictures of the grade 12 graduates. Congratulations to all of the grads.

Wow can you believe it, July is half over already and our gardens are coming up so healthy. Lots of rain and sun have given gardens and crops a great start.

Maybe a bumper crop this year?

Our Forever in Motion fitness classes wound up at the end of June. We had a lovely meal at the Asquith Bar & Grill as our wind up. The classes are starting up again on Tuesday September 15th, 2026 and will run Tuesdays & Thursdays for the 2026/2027 season from 10am-11am at the Better Life Recreation (Asquith’s Seniors Centre). We hope to see everyone back at it. Again, we would like to thank Diane Haugrud & Trudy Weststad.

Our Pickleball in Asquith ended for the season in June. Our wind up was a lot of fun. It’s so funny how things wind down when new growth is starting.

Feels kind of sad and happy at the same time. Sad that people you have connected with won’t be around for a couple of months and happy because we have accomplished another season of exercise and meeting new people.

The nice thing is we can still play Pickleball in Langham every Monday from 3pm-5pm & 6pm8pm. Wednesdays from 3pm-5pm and Thursdays from 3pm-5pm as well as Thursday from 6pm-8pm this last one only if there is enough interest. Come on people let’s do this. Pickleball is so much fun and it is great exercise.

For people who don’t know here is a little history of Pickleball. It was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Three fathers Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum improvised the game for their bored families. The game uses ping pong paddles, a perforated plastic ball and a lowered badminton net. Since then, the game has exploded. The world’s first Pickleball tournament was in 1979 and the USA Pickleball Association was established in 1984. In 1990 Pickleball was being played in all 50 states across the USA but now it is played in all corners of the world. It was thought to be a senior’s game but all ages have started to play and many have become addicted to it. Me included! My husband Len & I started playing it once a week then twice a week and now maybe three times a week?

Maybe. Just try it once then decide. If you do decide to try it “Dink responsibly, my friends” (A dink is a soft controlled downward hit) LOL Our last Bingo for the season was on Friday June 26th at 7pm. Our progressive jackpot was $180 in 62 numbers or less. The jackpot was won by two lovely ladies. A reminder that there is no bingo in July or August. This season we had some great sponsors that helped our bingo players win a bigger jackpot and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of them. These businesses are local and very important to our community. Asquith Bar & Grill, BTE Burwell Trenching and Electric, Graham Contracting, Skywest Farms and Willowgrove Colony. We truly appreciate them!

During our next bingo season, we are accepting door prizes as well, so if anyone knows a business or person that is willing to donate door prizes, we will happily include them as winnings for our players.

I wonder did anyone notice that we have a brandnew electronic sign up on the front of our building.

We have jumped right into the 21st century with high definition and pixels. We will be digitally advertising events coming up in our community and are offering it to our community members free of charge! If you have something you would like the community to know what better way to advertise for free? The contact person for now is Wayne Lake.

Contact the Asquith town office and they will let you know how to reach Wayne. The money used to purchase the sign was taken from our memorial fund donated by families of past members of our senior’s centre who have since passed on. We decided that this would be a perfect way to honor their memories for many decades to come. Thank you to all the families who donated money in honor of their loved ones.

Our first of two hamburger sales this summer was on Wednesday July 22nd and the second is on Wednesday August 19th from 5:00-7:00pm. Come and join us at the Senior Centre for some tasty hamburgers and great conversation.

As previously mentioned, numerous times, all events are welcome at our club and now you can have them posted on our digital sign. If you require a rental of our hall for a meeting, an art/painting class, a dance class, a singing class, a cooking class, a

What a great community with wonderful people, Lee Smith wrote: I write about people in small towns; I don’t write about people in big cities. My kind of storytelling depends upon people that have time to talk to each other.

I find this so true of the people in our community, everyone waves whether I am walking or biking.

Whenever I go into the Co-op there are people having friendly conversations. It feels special to be a part of that.

Crop Report for the Period of July 14 to 20, 2026

ost areas in the province experienced warmer, drier conditions this week, which improved crop development and allowed haying to proceed. However, localized thunderstorms caused damage to crops and property in some regions. The combination of warm temperatures and high humidity created favourable conditions for disease development. As a result, many producers are applying fungicides to suppress existing disease pressure and proactively spraying to reduce the risk of further disease development.

The rainfall received this week caused some localized Reasonable Rates flooding and brought hail and wind to parts of the province.

Topsoil moisture remains adequate for most of the province, despite many regions reporting reduced moisture this week.

Cropland topsoil moisture is: 12 per cent surplus; 77 per cent adequate; 10 per cent short; and 1 per cent very short.

Hayland topsoil moisture is: 11 per cent surplus; 78 per cent adequate; 10 per cent short; and 1 per cent very short.

Pasture topsoil moisture is: 7 per cent surplus; 76 per cent adequate; 14 per cent short; and 3 per cent very short.

Warmer weather helped crop development, bringing some crops closer to normal stages for this time of year. Fall cereals have the largest percentage of acres near normal stages of development while oilseeds, spring cereals and annual forages remain the largest percentages of crops that are behind.

Weather conditions allowed producers to move forward with haying operations this week. The first cut of hay is currently at the halfway mark with 43 per cent standing, 29 per cent cut and 28 per cent baled or put up as silage. Hay quality is rated as 24 per cent excellent, 65

per cent good, 10 per cent fair and 1 per cent poor.

Producers report minor to severe damage to crops from flooding, heat, wind and hail this week. Gophers and cabbage seedpod weevil caused minor to moderate damage to crops with some areas seeing higher damage depending on pest populations.

Localized storms and strong winds led to cereal crops lodging across many regions. In areas that remained wet most of the season, root rots and other diseases are causing minor to moderate damage.

Over the upcoming weeks, producers will be busy finishing fungicide spraying, haying and getting equipment ready for harvest. Producers are reminded to keep safety top of mind while working in the field and moving equipment.

New Prairie Pastures Management Network Takes Root in Saskatchewan July 21, 2026 - Eastend, Saskatchewan - South of the Divide Conservation Action Program Inc. Prairie grasslands are one of Canada’s most endangered and ecologically valuable ecosystems.

In Saskatchewan, much of the remaining native prairie is community pasture, managed by local grazing organizations. Grazing is a critical process for maintaining grassland health and biodiversity, but applying it well requires experience, skill, and local knowledge. Today, despite increasing awareness of the need to protect and conserve grasslands, many prairie communities face a declining pool of qualified pasture managers – and the connections and resources needed to develop and support them are scarce.

Recognizing the importance of having well-qualified managers on this special landscape, the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP Inc.) is proud to announce the Prairie Pastures Management Network – a five-year project made possible by a $2.6-million dollar contribution from the Weston Family Foundation’s Prairie Grasslands Initiative. The network will establish training hubs at community pastures across southern Saskatchewan, equipping current and future grazing managers with the ecological knowledge, practical management skills, and peer relationships they need through place-based, on-the-job learning. By building a network through which knowledge and skills are shared and preserved across the region, the project strengthens prairie communities' long-term capacity to manage and protect grassland biodiversity.

The network's training hubs will be anchored by experienced managers like Clint Christianson, who has worked in community pastures for decades. He is currently the manager at Beaver Valley Grazing Corporation and the chair of Val Marie Grazing Corporation – two pastures enrolled in the network.

On our prairies we need people who notice – who notice the species and the habitat and what's happening on the land. We want them to know it's not just grass and water, it's a whole ecosystem we are responsible for.

On what he hopes the program will give the next generation: “I want them to be interested in the species at risk and to notice the habitat and surroundings. I like to see them in action and the excitement when they see a Swift Fox or a new grassland bird… This program will create awareness of all the pieces of management. To be a good manager you need a respect for the land, the grass, and the patrons.”

That kind of knowledge doesn’t come from a classroom. Lee Bascom is the pasture manager for Arena Grazing Ltd., which will also serve as one of the network’s training hubs.

You learn at a grassroots level, how all the different parts come together, from people already doing the job. It’s more than just chasing cows and riding a horse, it’s dealing with patrons, organizations, tourists and people in your community, and it’s learning about the plant, soil, and animal life that make these places the ecosystems they are.

Prairie Grain To Move To The Port Of Churchill On The Hudson Bay Railway First shipment marks the return of grain to the Port of Churchill, and will contribute to the most diversified shipping season in the Port of Churchill’s history Winnipeg, MB, July 15, 2026 – Prairie grain will move on the Hudson Bay Railway to the Port of Churchill later this week, marking the first grain movement through the northern corridor since 2020 and another major milestone in the revitalization of Canada’s only deepwater Arctic seaport connected to the North American rail system.

Beginning Friday July 17, the grain will travel north through Manitoba on the Hudson Bay Railway, from The Pas, Manitoba, to the Port of Churchill for export. Multiple export vessels will ship the grain later this summer to global markets.

“This is an important day for Arctic Gateway Group, for Prairie producers, and for the Indigenous and northern communities that own this corridor,” said Mike Spence, Chair of the Arctic Gateway Group and Mayor of Churchill. “It’s a strong signal of the progress made to restore and rebuild this corridor, and of the opportunity ahead as we continue growing the business with a diversified mix of exports. In addition to grain, we will also this year export critical minerals and potash, as well as industrial goods, supplies and equipment to Nunavut representing the most diversified mix of annual exports in the Port of Churchill’s history.”

This year’s grain movement provides a strong foundation for growth as AGG continues to rebuild long-term traffic through the corridor.

Arctic Gateway Group recognizes the continued support of the Government of Canada, including through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) and Transport Canada, in helping advance the revitalization of the Hudson Bay Railway and Port of Churchill. AGG also recognizes the Province of Manitoba for its strong continued commitment to transforming the Port of Churchill into a strategic northern trade gateway, and thanks the Province of Saskatchewan for its commitment through last year’s memorandum of understanding with Manitoba and AGG to advance trade, transportation and economic development through the corridor.

The Great Shut-In: How We're Curating Ourselves Out of the Real World

M

y observation of many under 35: no friends, no intimate relationships, no steady job, no religion, no community, no children, but lots and lots of social media.

We no longer start our days quietly. Upon waking, a firehose of digital noise awaits on our nightstand: news from every direction, strangers' angst, marketers selling the illusion that their product or service will help us live our best life, and endless entertainment. We swipe a finger across the glass to silence our alarm, then open our inbox, where messages from people we've never met await a passive nod. Breakfast is cobbled together from groceries ordered via Instacart. By nine, we're in your home office, an isolation chamber of sorts, speaking into a camera and nodding at sixteen postage-stamp-sized faces performing a digital pantomime of engagement. At noon, we don't walk to a local diner; we order via Uber Eats. In the evening, we don't meet friends at a local pub; we stream a movie alone.

Driven by convenience, social avoidance, and plain laziness, we've built a world where you can survive for months without confronting the unedited reality of another human being. It's an efficiency masterpiece, and it's quietly killing us.

The frictionless life is marketed as the ultimate luxury, a liberation from the messy hassles of going out and dealing with (gasp) people. However, it eliminates the spontaneous, low-stakes encounters with reality that come from shopping, buying groceries, going to the movies, and leaving the house to earn a living. The nod to the letter carrier, the wry exchange with the barista, the shared small talk in a slow-moving line. These small interactions form the fabric of daily life. They anchor us to a shared narrative called life. Nowadays, we live in solitary loops, thinking that because we are constantly connected (texting, DMing, group chats, posting, commenting), we're connected.

Communication isn't connection. We're drowning in the former while starving for the latter, trading real-time presence for text threads, DMs, and voice notes. In his 2024 book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt observed that this digital portal "calls them away from the people nearby and into an alternative universe that was exciting, addictive and unstable." This fracture isn't merely cultural; it's

deeply personal. We've traded the vulnerable, messy practice of presence for the safe, curated distance that glass and pixels afford us.

Trading physical presence for digital pixels isn't an existential crisis; it's a tangible reality. Studies in Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology show that nearly 40% of adults experience persistent, intense loneliness. We've created a society where people are physically closer than ever yet remain emotionally isolated on their own islands.

Work-from-home (WFH) arrangements accelerated this withdrawal. Suggesting that remote work is anything less than a white-collar right invites scorn and defensive rage, born of entitlement. Nevertheless, no matter how loudly WFH evangelists shout from their soapboxes, they can't deny the consequences for individuals and society at large. Mothballing the corporate workplace eliminates more than the commute; it destroys the innate community of the office, the shared eyeroll across a table, the impromptu coffee run, and the post-meeting debriefs about everything except spreadsheets.

By converting our homes into offices, gyms, and cinemas, we've built comfortable refuges. In doing so, we've traded the unpredictable theatre outside our front door, which demands social and judgment skills to navigate, for the safe predictability of four walls.

In addition to turning our homes into hiding places from the world, we've redefined "introvert," once a useful descriptor for those who recharge in quiet contemplation, to justify our self-imposed exile. The term has been weaponized as a blanket excuse for social laziness, serving as a shield against the effort of engaging with the world. People increasingly prefer to passively observe the lives, careers, friendships, and romances they wish they had, substituting observation of other people's lives for living their own.

We write off our social anxiety not as a muscle weakened by disuse, but as a permanent part of our identity. "I can't go to Jenni's wedding; I'm an introvert!" "I can't go to my office holiday party; I'm an introvert!" Yet there's a vast difference between needing quiet to recharge and using solitude as a shield. Social skills aren't static traits; they're active practices. Avoiding conversations with strangers, navigating awkward pauses, or risking rejection withers your capacity to engage with others. We've

grown fragile behind smartphone and laptop screens, editing text messages, polishing emails, and curating our thoughts before hitting "send."

Faced with real-time, unscripted human exchange, we panic, blame "introversion," and retreat to our digital bunkers.

True community doesn't descend like a morning mist, nor does it belong to us simply because we share a telephone area code, a mayor, or a sports team. A city doesn't hand you connection. You can live in a high-rise surrounded by thousands and remain invisible and lonely if you choose not to engage. Meeting people who share your interests, forming meaningful friendships, and finding a romantic partner require sweat equity, the deliberate, uncomfortable effort of placing yourself where spontaneous interaction happens, rather than taking the path of least digital resistance. Choose the cashier over self-checkout. Join a local bowling league, volunteer at a community garden, or have breakfast three mornings a week at the same diner so you become a familiar regular. Take the initiative. Start small talk, offer to help, ask for help, or simply say, "Let's go grab a coffee." Connection isn't a commodity to download; it's cultivated with intention that dispels the fear of rejection. You connect with the world by participating in it, not by scrolling through other people's curated posts.

The discomfort we feel when stepping out of our home bunkers isn't a sign that we're broken or don't belong in the world. It's simply the friction of life returning to our joints, the strain of muscles being stretched after years of inactivity. This minor discomfort isn't a threat; it's the price of admission to a life of depth and meaning. Living solely through screens offers nothing more than second-hand warmth. If you want to live your "best life," surrounded by people who cheer for you, listen to your hopes and dreams, support your goals, and lift you up when you stumble, you must open your front door, step outside, and re-enter the beautifully messy, unpredictable, and often rewarding real world. Human connections are waiting for you, but they won't knock on your door. You must go out and meet them.
