Back 40 Embroidery Show & Shine more photos on page 3

Record 158 Vehicles in Attendance

T

he Back 40 Embroidery Show and Shine was held on Saturday, July 10th in Delisle. It was a beautiful day and it turned out to be a spectacular show. We usually held the Back 40 Show and Shine by the schools, but due to a overwhelming response, we decided to move it downtown to 1st Street West, in front of all the other businesses in town. This gave us added space and also gives our community's fellow businesses more traffic, and hopefully more business. We had 158 vehicles that registered at the show, the most we've ever had! It was an amazing group of vehicles, with lots of returning entrants, as well as lots of new ones! There were cars that came from all over the province from Swift Current to Albertville. Saskatchewan car clubs were also well represented, with members from the Draggins, Dusty Wheels, 567 Club, the Mustang Club, Shriner's, The Shifters, The King's Men, and Klassic Kruisers. It was also amazing to see all the local cars that came out to the show. We have some great vehicles that are from our local area!

We decided that this year we'd change things up and asked Delisle's Mayor, Cary Brunett, to pick a Mayor's Choice, and we, at Back 40 Embroidery, chose our favorite for Back 40's Choice. With so many great cars, Cary had a hard time choosing her favorite, but settled on Neil Doell's 1956 Chevy Belair, from Saskatoon. The Back 40's Choice went to Vic and Diane Loth's 1955 Ford Crown Victoria, from Shellbrook. We are already looking forward to next year's Back 40 Show and Shine! We are hoping for a normal show next year, that we can make bigger and better, without restrictions. If you missed the Show & Shine, go to the Back 40 Embroidery Facebook page and check out lots of pictures posted from The Shifters Car Club, as well as a Facebook live post from Jay Thomas Auto who walked around most of the show. It was an amazing day! Thank you to all the people who brought out their vehicles, everyone who came to look, and to all the businesses in town that went above and beyond to welcome the Back 40 Show & Shine downtown.

Due to pandemic restrictions, we were unable to give out our usual Competitor's Choice and People's Choice awards without handling ballots.

Live Free and/or Die ?

“Live Free Or Die” is likely the most well-known state motto in the USA. It was adopted by the state of New Hampshire in 1945. The phrase was taken from a toast on July 31, 1809 by General John Stark, a famous soldier of the American Revolutionary War. In 1971 the state of New Hampshire mandated that the motto be displayed on NH license plates. In 1977 a legal battle began when a Jehovah’s Witness, George Maynard covered up the “Or Die” part of the state motto on his license plate. Jehovah’s Witness religion believes in everlasting life. The court decided in his favor so New Hampshire residents are “Free” to cover up part, or all of the state motto on their plates. Apparently Jehovahs Witnesses want to live free... but also don’t want to die. Ironically their belief in medicine, which includes all vaccinations, is restricted only by their refusal to accept a blood transfusion. For this they are willing to die, and do! To most of us this makes little sense. Sound Familiar ?? There is always a small percentage of people in every society that chose to live out on the fringes for reasons of religion or just a fear of something or other. In the case of Canada, a recent poll shows that just 8% of us say they will never get the COVID-19 vaccine. As it stands, 86% of Canadians 18 years or older have had at least one shot now. Improving distribution and access to the vaccine should eventually get us to 92%, with 8% will remaining on the fringe. These number are very similar in England as well as many other western world, modern, democratic societies. That is except for one... Two months ago only 5% of Canadians were fully vaccinated with two shots. At the same point in time the Americans had achieved 40% and were the envy of the world. Today the U.S. is still below 50% while Canada has surged past 50% and will apparently hit at least 86% if everyone who took the first shot follows up with the second. And why on earth wouldn’t they ??

RM Review

www.rmreview.net

Why is it that the U.S. has stalled out on getting their citizens protected and back to a normal way of life ? Is it religion ? Access ? Awareness ? I’m sure these factors play a small role, but the real reason, which most of the world has known all along, has finally come to the forefront. POLITICS !! An Angus Reid poll shows that 85% of Canadians that voted Liberal in 2019 have got at least one jab so far. 84% of those that voted NDP have as well. In England 90% of people that voted conservative have stepped up as well as 83% of those that voted against them. No split along party lines apparently. Yet to the south of us, 74% of Biden voters have secured a first jab while only 59% of Trump voters have. Why ? Now that the deadly Delta variant has decided that the unvaccinated are going to be ravaged with a fourth wave, the reason for this hesitancy has been clearly revealed by those that caused it. As “Conservative” American politicians, and their television and talk show host co-conspirators, are seeing their base of supporters flowing into the hospitals, many unfortunately on a one way ride, they have again taken to their podiums but are now singing a whole new tune. Gone are the cries for civil liberties and revolution... replaced instead with “take it seriously... talk to your doctor... get the vaccine... I’ve never said not to...” and on and on and on. It is great that they now appear to be stopping the misinformation campaigns (and not kill all of their supporters just before the 2022 mid-term elections), but just a simple reversal of their message may not be enough this time. They may just be seen as weak and compromised (and worthy of being hung), while hard core Trumpers continue to cling to that liberty and freedom badge of honour that they were given instead of vaccine. These ‘leaders’ need to tell the whole truth “we lied to you... we used you... there is no QAnon... go get the vaccine... and oh ya... vote for me again in 2022”

A Lesson in Perspective

s we all know, 2020 was a tough year.

We had to cancel a trip to Mazatlan for 3 weeks in December which I am still feeling miffed about - it didn't help that I kept torturing myself by looking at the forecast of the weather I could have been enjoying. And putting salt in the wound continual public announcements that we are all in this together - oh yeah? so where's my airfare refund? Anyway, feeling morose and perhaps just a tad put-upon, I stopped to talk to one of my neighbours, Scott, and he helped me put things in perspective. 1) Scott had just turned 65 (and didn't much care for it); 2) then he had surgery to remove a spot of cancer from his lungs; 3) while still in hospital, he contracted shingles; 4) still recovering from the shingles, he was putting up Christmas lights and fell off the ladder, causing a trip to the ER (lacerations, cracked ribs, minor concussion);

Contact Us Today 306-668-1312 mail@rmreview.net

Leaving Scott's place, I drove home feeling contemplative and in a philosophical frame of mind. I was thinking about Scott's misfortunes and comparing them to my own minor complaints. I read somewhere that if everybody's troubles were put into a big pile and then handed back out on an equal share basis, most people, on seeing the number and types of troubles in the pile, would consider themselves well-advised to just re-claim their own. I pondered on these things, and on life in general - the ups and downs of it, the big picture, the meaning and purpose of it. And as I pulled into my driveway, I wondered if Scott might be interested in coming over to play a little poker.

After finishing high school, Annette trained at St Paul’s as a lab technician. This was a career she loved but did not stay in as she soon became a farmer’s wife, mother, and homemaker. She was also a long-time resident of the Vanscoy Community. Some of her many interests included painting, crafting, golfing, fishing, and playing cards with her friends. She always had time for her routine phone calls from some of her closest friends such as Nancy Sparrow, Eleanor Guina, Joyce Richmond, and Evalene Sanders – just to mention a few. Mom loved gardening, she would organize and direct the planting of a large yearly vegetable garden. She also took great joy in watching her flower beds blossom, particularly her lilies which are all tagged and labelled. She shared this joy with her grandson Matthew who cross pollinated some of her favourite lilies. Mom was able to enjoy one of these new creations this year which Matthew proudly named ‘Lilly Antoinette’. Annette will be dearly missed. As per Annette’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.

Delisle Splash Park Receives $50,000 Donation from Richardson Pioneer at Fundraiser Comedy Event

T

he Delisle Splash Park Committee held a wonderful event on July 10, 2021. It started with a generous and substantial donation from Richardson Pioneer Limited of $50,000. These funds are being used to build a storage building by the splash park in Harold Worth Park. The building will house the mechanical needs of the splash pad itself as well as separate storage bays for Delisle Minor Ball and Delisle Minor Soccer. Harold Worth Park hosts many events and this building will also have an area for collecting tickets for tournaments held at the sight. We are very excited to have Richardson Pioneer Limited as the major sponsor for this structure.

We are so excited with the progress we have made in making this Splash Park reality. Now we want to ensure we can put on the finishing touches (seating, bike rack, etc.) We will be keeping everyone posted as the construction process gets underway. And of course, we want to thank everyone including the municipalities, media and business owners in our community for the support we have received so far in making this dream a reality.

After this wonderful announcement all those in attendance were treated to a hilarious evening enjoying the comedy of a Saskatchewan comedian, Kelly Taylor. This event could not have happened without local support and we want to thank Ron Brown Implements for his sponsorship of the event. We would like to pass on thanks to Saskatoon Audio Visual and Starling Septic that both contributed to the event as well. And last but not least, thanks to everyone in attendance it was good to laugh along with everyone. The Delisle Splash Park Committee is working to have the construction of the park completed this year and have it ready to be opened in the spring of 2022. We are still finalizing the construction costs of the building and foundation as well as fencing, landscaping and seating areas. Our original quotes were from 2019 when we started applying for grants and as you know, costs have become very volatile through the Covid pandemic. We still have some grants outstanding that are awaiting decision which should help us with the shortfall if we are successful in our applications.

5th Annual DCC Motorcycle Sunday

D

id you hear the music or the motorcycles in Delisle this past Sunday? Delisle Community Church hosted their 5th Annual Motorcycle Sunday on July 18, and bikers of all brands and styles came to hear the country-gospel music, the Faster Pastor speak about Psalm 23 from a rider’s perspective, have their bikes Blessed, and eat a great lunch. Over 100 people and about 37 motorcycles came to the event, from Delisle area, Saskatoon area, and as far away as Edmonton, Alberta. Even two very young bikers from Pike Lake brought their little vehicles in the back of their dad’s pickup truck and were eager to show off their riding skills. The oldest rider was in their 70’s, and the bikes ranged from Harley-Davidson’s to BMW’s.

Because the Lead Pastor of Delisle Community Church, Herb Anderson (aka The Faster Pastor) is one of North America’s most avid motorcycle riders, DCC has offered, a day to invite riders to attend church for the past 5 years. This is the second year it has been held in the great outdoors and featured a band on Cam Fraser’s trailer and the sound booth on Craig Shirley’s hay wagon. Attendees heard good old-fashioned country gospel music by Rick Martin, Dodie and Celeste Ferguson with local Carlin Fehr on bass. They were also treated to a great lunch prepared by Ruth Shostal and her helpers who are all women who attend DCC, and enjoyed the chance to meet other riders. After the meal, many of the riders took off on a ride led by Herb Anderson to Hannigan’s Café in Biggar and then to Rosetown for ice-cream, while many nonriders stayed to visit under the shady canopies looking over at the almost finished renovations at the Delisle Community Church building, across the street from the Delisle Composite School. DCC members worked together to make this day a warm welcome to motorcycle aficionados. DCC looks forward to hosting this event again next summer.

Summer Water Safety Pike Lake Fire & Rescue - Home Safety Tip #7

For many families summer includes boating and swimming. Unfortunately each year tragic and avoidable water related fatalities occur. Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional death for children ages one to four. A small child can disappear in seconds and can drown in only a few centimeters of water – enough to cover the nose and mouth. Other factors for adults in water related fatalities include water current and alcohol consumption. Prevention • Supervision The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings. Always watch children around water even if they can swim. Never swim alone. If a child is missing always check the water first. • Diving Avoid diving headfirst into water unless you are properly trained and sure the water is deep enough. Serious injuries, including paralysis can occur from diving headfirst into unknown water. • Open Water Never underestimate the power of currents. Swimmers or Waders can be swept away in an instant. Always be aware of currents in rivers and abrupt drop-offs. Know your limits! Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning ! • Drowning persons aren’t usually able to speak or call out for help because their breathing is impaired. • Drowning persons usually cannot wave for help. Instinct forces them to press down on the water surface so they can keep their mouths out of the water to breath. • Drowning persons bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued, they can only struggle for 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs. Until next time stay Safe and stay Healthy! n July 10, 2021 Delisle Nutrien Arena was graciously donated to the All in for Kim barrel racing fundraiser. Kim is a member of the barrel racing community who had invasive surgery and was off work for several months during recovery.

The barrel racing community has shown great support for numerous of their own when hard times befall one of them and this was no different. A small group of friends decided to host this fundraiser to help her out with expenses. Barrel racers from all over braved the heat and dust to support the cause. The committee would like to send a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this event such a success, we are proud to say over $2700 was raised for Kim!

MP REPORT

Kelly Block, MP July 21, 2021

Letter to the Prime Minister from the Saskatchewan Caucus

Dear Prime Minister, We are writing to you today to demand fair treatment for the people of Saskatchewan. For some time now, your government has accepted New Brunswick’s plan to comply with your carbon-tax. The New Brunswick plan provides relief to consumers from your tax with a rebate. In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Saskatchewan submitted a similar plan. Yet despite the fact that you accepted New Brunswick’s proposal, last week your Minister of the Environment rejected Saskatchewan’s proposal. Mr. Trudeau, this is a double-standard that is completely unjust. One of the fundamental principles of confederation is the fair treatment of the provinces by the federal government. Denying our province the same benefits that you have granted to another sets a dangerous precedent. You are effectively saying that the people of Saskatchewan must bear the full impact of your tax, while people in New Brunswick are protected from its full effect. This is grossly unfair. Your excuse that you are planning on moving the goalposts on your carbon tax in 2023 is completely illegitimate. At the very least, you should accept Saskatchewan’s plan until such time as you change the rules for all provinces. Instead, for the next year and a half, you are denying the people of this province the same benefits that the people of New Brunswick enjoy. Our Saskatchewan Conservative Caucus represents the elected will of the people of this province. Every single electoral district chose a Conservative to represent them in Ottawa. We have a democratic mandate to fight for our great province and speak on behalf of the people of this great province.

Conversely, voters in this province utterly rejected your platform and your record as Prime Minister. You have no mandate to impose arbitrary rules on this province over the objections of its provincial government and against the unanimous opposition of its elected federal MPs, especially when you have granted concessions and accommodations to other provinces. We are calling on you to put a stop to the provincial favouritism, and accept Saskatchewan’s proposed implementation of your carbon tax. Canada deserves a Prime Minister that unites Canadians, not one that sows division. Do the right thing, treat all provinces fairly, and accept Saskatchewan’s carbon-tax implementation. Sincerely, Kevin Waugh, M.P. Saskatchewan Caucus Chair Brad Redekopp, M.P. Saskatchewan Caucus Vice Chair Kelly Block, M.P.

AGRICULTURE REPORTS

Government of Saskatchewan Enhances Support for Producers Dealing With Dry Conditions July 14, 2021 - Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced today that Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) will implement measures to address dry conditions impacting producers. Effective immediately, changes will be made to allow low yielding crops to be put to alternate use to support the livestock sector. The Government of Saskatchewan is also making changes to temporarily increase the maximum funding a livestock producer can receive from the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP) for dugouts, wells and pipelines. "Our livestock sector is facing tremendous challenges sourcing feed, as well as some challenges in securing access to sustainable, quality livestock water sources," Marit said. "Agriculture is a vital part of our provincial economy and we are taking steps to support producers through this extended period of dry, hot conditions."

"I want to encourage grain producers to work with neighbouring livestock producers to make feed available. SCIC is working with customers to ensure damaged crops, intended for harvest, can be put to an alternate use such as silage, baling or grazing."

For the period April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, the maximum rebate for livestock producers only will increase to $150,000. The first $50,000 will be based on a 50-50 cost-share and the remaining $100,000 will be on a 70-30 government-producer cost-share.

When crops are severely damaged and the appraised yield falls below an established threshold level, the yield is reduced to zero. In response to the feed shortage this year, SCIC is doubling the Low Yield Appraisal threshold values for customers who salvage their cereal or pulse crops as feed, without negatively impacting future individual coverage. For example, the previous established threshold for barley was seven bushels per acre. For Crop Insurance customers wanting to utilize a grain crop for feed, the threshold will now be 14 bushels per acre. In this case, a zero bushel yield would be used for the claim and the original 14 bushels would be used to update future coverage.

FRWIP and Crop Insurance are both offered through the federal-provincial Canadian Agricultural Partnership agreement.

Customers are asked to contact their local SCIC office before they graze, bale or silage any damaged crops to discuss their options. Crop Insurance coverage will not be negatively impacted if customers chose to divert grain crops to feed. Livestock producers can gain access to feed sources from Crop Insurance customers who choose to put their crops to a use other than harvest. Producers are encouraged to contact their neighbouring operations to set up arrangements. Presently, under FRWIP, costs related to dugouts, pipelines and wells are funded at 50 per cent of eligible costs, to a maximum rebate of $50,000 over the life of the program.

The Government of Saskatchewan has also formally requested the federal government designate the entire province as eligible through the Livestock Tax Deferral program, for all Saskatchewan producers who may need to liquidate part of their breeding herd due to feed or water shortages. The AgriStability Program provides an option for producers looking to access a portion of their benefit early. Through the interim benefit, producers enrolled in AgriStability can get 50 per cent of their estimated final benefit. The Farm Stress Line is available for support. The Farm Stress Line is a confidential service, available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, toll-free at 1-800667-4442. Calls are answered by Mobile Crisis Services Regina, a non-profit, community-based agency and there is no call display. Government continues to monitor the situation and engage with stakeholders and federal-provincial-territorial counterparts. SCIC is here to help during this difficult time. Producers can contact their local SCIC office, call toll-free at 1-888-935-0000 or visit www.scic.ca to review available options and ensure decisions are not delayed.

Put Politics Aside and Move Forward with Drought Support, Urge Canada’s Grain Growers July 23, 2021 (Ottawa, Ontario) In light of the devastating drought and its impact on grain farmers across the country, the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) would like to thank Minister Bibeau for invoking the late participation provision for AgriStability. The announcement was made yesterday during the Minister’s tour of hard-hit areas in Manitoba.

FARMERS DO YOU LOVE BEES ? Would you be interested in hosting a Bee Yard on your land ? Are you within the Pike Lake, Vanscoy, Delisle, Grandora and Asquith Area ?

Mike’s Bees is looking for a Bee Yard that is situated near canola, alfalfa, clover or wildflower field. They love having a shelter of trees on one side receiving morning sun. Bees are said to increase crop yield by 30% Protect and Enhance Your Habitat

Email Mike at mikesbees@sasktel.net

“We are very grateful for yesterday’s announcement,” said GGC Chair Andre Harpe from his farm in Valhalla Centre, AB. “Right now, AgriStability is the only program that can offer some meaningful support to Canada’s grain farmers, many of whom are facing a devastating impact from this year’s drought.” As a result of yesterday’s announcement, farmers

and ranchers who have not yet enrolled in AgriStability can still access program support, provided the provinces invoke the late participation provision – which remains a critical measure to support Canada’s grain farmers. However, farmers will still not feel the full effects of these measures until the compensation rate for the program is increased from 70 to 80 per cent, a move which will rely on cost-sharing with the individual provinces and territories. GGC has reiterated that while the provinces do face unique fiscal challenges, an investment in agriculture is more than worth it to support rural communities and the food security of all Canadians. “This is a time where we must come together.” Harpe added. “We need everyone at the table to avoid playing politics and act quickly to provide an actionable and accessible support system for farmers.” The original proposal to increase AgriStability’s compensation rate was discussed during the 2020 Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting.
