I feel pretty good today. I have energy, my mind seems pretty clear (at least for me), my little aches and pains are light and I have a basically positive mindset.

I don’t take that for granted. A week ago, for no reason that I can explain, my back and knees hurt and it took some effort to motivate to do almost anything.

On Wednesday last week, a couple a friends had invited me to go on an outing in the hills on Sunday, and I had declined because I simply lacked the energy, but unexplainably,

by Friday my stoke had returned and I ended going with them for a pretty exciting, lovely day.

I can’t explain these ups and downs. I’ve set my attitude to try to maintain mental and physical flexibility as best I can. For me that means having a regular morning routine of tai chi and yoga for the physical flexibility. The mental stretching part is not quite as straight forward. I meditate most days to help train my mind to let thoughts go, especially judgments and comparisons. I think it helps me during the day to catch when these pigeon-holing thoughts come up. I think, why trap myself in a fixed way of seeing the world. Sure it’s more secure, but it’s how we build our own little mental prisons that we can’t break out of.

I’m a fan of Todd Snider and he has a song called Age Like Wine with this chorus: Old timers, old timers Too old to die young now Old Timer, old timers Trying to age like wine somehow I was on a raft trip in the Grand Canyon this spring with friends—18 days floating and camping off the grid. There were 16 of us. Ten were in their 60s, three in their 70s, and the other three younger “kids.” As we were scouting the first major rapid and getting, shall I say, highly focused, I channeled Snider and said, “Well, I guess we’re too old to die young now.”

A friend on the trip put his hand to chest and said, “I don’t know what I have, but I know it’s not early onset!”

Sometimes overlooked, I think that humor, or approaching life with a light touch, helps keep us mentally healthy in difficult times. And I think we’ve all seen how our mental state affects our physical state.

For a summary of how to age well, I recommend reading Linda Osmundson’s feature story this month. She ticks right down the list: physical and mental health, active social life, healthy nutrition, sleep, challenging your brain. It’s the kind of story that you want to keep handy and refer to often.

Update and simplify your kitchen

TO SIMPLIFY YOUR KITCHEN for easier/safer living, address bending, lifting, stretching and “falling” hazards. Get rid of stepstools!

Begin with opening up storage space–eliminate duplicates; keep only what you need and will use. Utilize the waist high program–keep everyday items near waist height and within easy reach. Store the rarely used light weight items high, and heavier items low in the cabinets and pantry on pullout shelving. If pullouts are too expensive, use Lazy Susans, turntables and/or risers. Make every item visible. Install a “pullout and up” shelf for your mixer.

Transfer liquids from large bottles to smaller containers for easier handling and everyday storage. Utilize inside door storage organizers.

Keep a container of cleaning supplies to carry room to room rather than duplicating in every room.

Purchase a toaster oven and one-cup coffee maker. Install undercabinet lighting.

Simplify your life and have time for more fun!

Cozy outdoor living spaces HOW CAN YOU MAKE cozy outdoor retreats for morning coffee, lunch, evening wine and cheese with friends, a nap and/or a place to enjoy the sunset after a long day? Think relaxing and comfortable.

Follow these suggestions.

Anchor conversation and eating areas with outdoor rugs.

Treat the space the same as indoors–comfortable, thick cushion seating with pop-of-color pillows. Plan for weather, include a propane firepit/fireplace, blankets and fans. Add string lights overhead and landscape lighting in ground or in pots. Use yellow bulbs rather than white. Decorate with plants and seasonal items such as pumpkins, lanterns, flowers, water features.

Provide shade–a permanent roof, umbrella, pergola, or awning. Bug proof with tiki lights, torches, zappers, citronella, screening, heavy duty gazebo netting or sticky traps. Fans keep weak flying insects like mosquitos and gnats at bay. Surround the area with rosemary, mint, lavender or marigolds.

Then, sit back and enjoy.

Light the way for a safer home FALLS ARE A LEADING CAUSE of injuries for seniors. Proper lighting removes some risks. LED lights provide a brighter and cheaper task light. Dimmers prevent unwanted glare/reflection.

Motion activated lights relieve stretching/reaching/straining.

Night lights illuminate high-traffic areas like hallways, bathrooms and stairs. Consider the following “layered” technique of lighting.

Ambient lighting provides broad, even illumination into dark corners, eliminates shadows and contrasts between light and dark floor areas. Use multiple sources like chandeliers, pendent and flush mounted lights.

Task lighting focuses on areas needing accuracy and clarity. Use swing-arm sconces for reading, under cabinet lights for cooking and bright lights mounted above mirrors for grooming.

Accent lighting minimizes shadows, especially in the case of uneven surfaces. Picture lights and decorative wall sconces brighten and highlight surfaces that add visual interest and lighting balance in rooms.

“Layered” lighting adds depth on walls and keeps a room functional and visually appealing.

Breathing easier: indoor air quality

AS WE AGE, our lungs and immune systems can become more vulnerable to indoor air pollutants. Dust, pet dander, mold, smoke, cleaning chemicals, and poor ventilation can irritate the airways and make existing breathing or heart problems more difficult to manage. For older adults who spend more time at home, maintaining healthy indoor air quality can be especially important.

A few simple habits can make a difference. Keep dust under control by vacuuming regularly with a HEPA-filter vacuum and damp-dusting surfaces rather than sweeping.

Control moisture by repairing leaks, using bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and keeping indoor humidity around 30–50 percent to discourage mold growth. Change HVAC filters regularly and consider using a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter in the rooms where you spend the most time.

Avoid smoking indoors, and minimize the use of heavily scented candles, air fresheners, and harsh cleaning products.

When weather and outdoor air quality allow, open windows briefly to bring in fresh air.

Finally, don’t ignore signs of an indoor air problem.

Persistent musty odors, visible mold, unusual dust, or worsening coughing, wheezing, or irritation may be reasons to investigate further.

Staying steady: reducing fall risk as we age FALLS ARE A MAJOR CONCERN for older adults, but getting older doesn’t mean losing strength, balance, or independence.

Building physical strength and practicing balance regularly can help seniors feel steadier and more confident moving through daily life.

Simple exercises can make a difference. Strength training— such as chair squats, standing leg lifts, or light resistance-band exercises—can help strengthen the legs and core. Balance exercises, such as standing on one foot while holding a sturdy counter, can improve stability. Walking, tai chi, and other low-impact activities can also support strength, coordination, and mobility. If you’re new to exercise or have health concerns, talk with your healthcare provider or physical therapist about exercises appropriate for you.

Fall prevention also starts with everyday habits. Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes, keep pathways clear of clutter and cords, use handrails on stairs, and make sure rooms, hallways, and bathrooms are well lit. Consider grab bars in the bathroom if needed.

Staying active and preparing your home can help seniors maintain strength, confidence, and independence while reducing the risk of serious falls.

Supplements for seniors A FEW SUPPLEMENTS can be useful for older adults, but there is no universal senior supplement list. Needs depend on diet, medications, health conditions, and bloodwork. Commonly overlooked nutrients include vitamin B12, which becomes harder for some older adults to absorb; vitamin D, which supports bone and muscle health; and calcium, when dietary intake is insufficient. Depending on diet and individual circumstances, protein supplements or omega-3s may also be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. The goal isn’t to take more supplements—it’s to take the right ones, at the right dose, for the right reason.

The best approach is to start with food

and identify gaps, rather than taking a long list of supplements “just in case.” Keep a record of what you eat for several days and bring it, along with a complete list of medications and supplements, to your healthcare provider or registered dietitian. Ask whether blood tests or a medication review could identify a specific need.

Seniors should also remember that “natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe. Some supplements can interact with prescription medications or cause problems when taken in excessive amounts.

Look for products that have been independently tested by organizations such as USP, NSF, or ConsumerLab.

Pastels on 5th September 12 Downtown Loveland pastelson5th.org Pastels on 5th transforms downtown Loveland into a colorful outdoor art gallery as artists create intricate chalk masterpieces directly on the pavement. The free, family-friendly festival runs from 10am to 5pm and features live music, a marketplace, a kids’ art area, People’s Choice voting, and an opportunity to watch artists create throughout the day. The nearby Loveland Museum is also open during the event.

Focus on adapting your living space, simplifying daily tasks, eating healthy, and staying physically, mentally and socially active. Start by concentrating on the positive. Do something you enjoy every day. Congratulate yourself, smile and laugh; embrace the joys of growing older.

Simply your surroundings and life. Start with your closet. Pull out all your clothing, choose your most flattering colors and create outfits by mixing and matching. Donate leftovers. Organize the closet for seasons. Arrange by leisure, casual, dressy and special occasion wear. Do the same with your accessories.

Next, attack each room in your home. Declutter, open up space, get rid of unsentimental knick-knacks, remove “fall/trip” hazards like throw rugs. Hide cords. Donate 24 | Fifty&Better

kitchen duplicates. Make all rooms open, comfortable and inviting. Then, adapt these healthy habits.

Practice mental/physical health Maintaining physical and mental health promises graceful aging. Schedule yearly preventive health appointments with your physician, dermatologist, eye doctor, audiologist and other doctors necessary to manage your health.

Get plenty of exercise. Walk. It isn’t necessary to walk thirty minutes all at once. Take three ten-minute walks or park your car at the mall or grocery store in the farthest spaces. Join a senior center social dance night.

Settle for 7000 steps per day until strength allows more steps. Learn balance exercises. Stand on one leg 20-30 seconds while brushing your teeth, cooking or cleaning dishes. Repeat with other leg. Watch your weight.

Manage stress. Use deep breathing exercises.

Inhale deeply through nose; exhale slowly through mouth. Repeat several times. Focus on something you can control rather than something you cannot.

When stressed, change your activity. Read, call a friend/family. Seek professional help if depression/ stress continues.

Keep an active social life To prevent loneliness and depression, remain socially active. Join an organization of your liking. Meet new friends. Aspen Club at UCHealth offers education, exercise and much more. Sign up for their activities.

Peruse the Fort Collins Senior Center’s catalog for classes or events. Search the internet for volunteer opportunities at museums or other organizations. Register for continuing education classes or audit a class through a university. Join OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute (https://www.osher.colostate.edu/). Check their catalog; take advantage of their lectures, classes and trips. You might even give a lecture or teach a class for them. Interact with family and friends

through Facetime-, Zoom- or Skype-type apps.

Lunch with friends often. Organize a game afternoon with friends or attend entertainment venues.

Maintain healthy nutrition Many options exist for maintaining a healthy diet.

The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan based on traditional foods of countries around the Mediterranean Sea. It promotes plant-based foods, healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil and high amounts of fish, while limiting red meat, processed foods, and added sugars. Fill your plate with half vegetables and fruits plus a protein. A person who weighs 150 pounds should eat between 68-88 grams of protein a day. That means three meals consisting of 20-30 protein grams; for example, a 3–4-ounce chicken breast fulfills the needed proteins for one meal. Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products supply all nine essential amino acids of proteins. So do beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

avocados, nuts and add supplements of calcium and vitamin D, if needed. Minimize the processed foods; those changed from their natural state such as frozen, canned or any with additional salt and oil. Limit these ultra processed foods we love–packaged chips, crackers, and cookies, soda, energy drinks, sweetened teas, hot dogs, salami, deli turkey, frozen pizzas, microwave dinners and sweetened breakfast cereals.

With all these “don’t” foods, still, treat yourself once in a while to something you really enjoy like ice cream.

Drink moderately.

Get enough sleep Aging often brings on insomnia. Experts suggest seven to eight hours of good uninterrupted sleep a night. To assist in obtaining sleep hours, turn off technology one to two hours before bedtime.

Adjust bedroom lighting to your liking. Be consistent in bedtimes. Perhaps turn on white noise like ocean waves.

To induce sleep, turn off screens, keep your room dark and cool (65–72°F), and try the 4-7-8 breathing method (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8). Avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bed. Keep active throughout the day.

Challenge your brain No discussion of healthy, graceful aging can avoid challenging your brain. A healthy brain deters dementia. Play Wordscapes on your phone, computer or iPad. You form words from a circle of suggested letters to fill a blank crossword grid.

Apps like the once daily New York Times Wordle offers six chances to guess a five-letter word. Other games allow unlimited play. Crossword puzzles test knowledge. Jigsaw puzzles boost brain power, engage logic and creativity, improve short-term memory and enhance visual-spatial reasoning.

Puzzles also lower stress by creating a calm, meditative state. They offer a welcome break from digital screens.

Sue Turner, Dedicated to Loveland THE LOVELAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY recognized Sue Turner as a leader.

When Sue and husband Ted responded to an ad about the society’s monthly program, they enjoyed it so much they put it on their calendar as a date night. Shortly thereafter, the Society convinced Sue to join the board for a 2-year term as program chairman.

Just over a year later, they asked her to take over the president’s position. She was recently elected to serve another 2-year term.

Sue, a lifetime resident of Loveland (except for a time at CU and her first year of marriage) and Ted had four children in four years, including a set of twins. Eventually, she volunteered at Winona Elementary and helped create Omnibus for gifted and talented students. Once the school hired a gifted and talented teacher, Sue volunteered in other ways, like chili suppers, book sales and scouts.

Sue worked as a bank mortgage lender for various banks before retiring.

After 52 years of marriage, she and Ted stay busy with family–9 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Ted formed the Harmony Hotshots Jazz Band. He previously played banjo with Up with People and Your Father’s Mustache. He served in the army, worked for Agilent, HP and now owns CoGen Marketing Inc. Ted contributes to LHS through his technological background. “I am glad my husband and I enjoy working together and work well together,” says Sue. Sue realized former board members took their knowledge when they left the board. She wanted that knowledge 34 | Fifty&Better

“Loveland Historical Society manages two properties,” adds Sue. “LHS owns the Mariano Medina Family Cemetery on West 1st Street and Namaqua Road. We lease the Milner-Schwarz House from Loveland.” The city maintains the structure; the society maintains and cares for the interior, the grounds and the community gardens. In 2025, notice of serious damage to the wallpaper in the dining room at the Milner house required a contractor to remove the paper and replace it.

But, mold and extreme moisture in the walls was discovered. For the past year, Sue, Ted, the society and the city

have worked to stop deterioration of brick, walls, paper and paint.

Colorado State Historical Funds awarded a Planning grant to outline a plan of action.

“My goal moving forward,” Sue says, “is to create more visibility for our organization through media outlets, programs, special events and collaboration with other nonprofits such as Creator Space. I want to continue to collect the knowledge from past volunteers so we can document their efforts and the efforts of our current volunteers. I am very fortunate to have a great board who is fully engaged and many volunteers who are generous with their talents and time.”
