Encouraged by a high school comrade, Bob Calhoun heads back to Detroit for his 50th high school reunion. He’s glad he went…not so much to rekindle friendships from decades ago, but more out of a curiosity to gather perspective on life, clarify who he is now, and reconnect with what helped shape his identity.

Be the pebble

Expand your world with little acts of kindness I WAS READING KIM SHARPE’S STORY about Suzanne Barslund, our featured volunteer this issue. Her quote at the end of the story caught my attention: “I think I do such a tiny piece, but if we can all just make a little bit of difference, and have a little ripple effect, then this world will be a better place.” Sometimes we think that we have to do something grandiose to be giving people: volunteer here, donate money there, be on this committee or that board. But I think that the sentiment that Suzanne expresses captures a different kind of sentiment, at least for me, anyway. This idea that doing our little bit has a ripple effect is powerful. And our little bit can be as easy as giving someone in our world a hug if they’re feeling a little down, or being nice to a server at lunch, or visiting a friend who is recovering from an illness or injury. All these little gestures of kindness might cause the people we’re around to pass that generosity and compassion on in their next encounter with someone. Like a pebble tossed into a still pond, ripples spread. Of course, it’s a wonderful thing to volunteer and be involved in the community, too, whether it’s for a program or organization we would like to support or something on our own, such as shoveling our neighbors walk. The funny thing is that when we give, we get. I think it becomes an attitude thing, a way of being in the world. And people notice that, whether they actually log it or not. If you walk into a room with je ne sais quoi that says I’m here to help, people feel it. We all do. We all naturally gauge the mood of room when we walk in…cold, warm, friendly, frantic. The quickest way to making ourselves happy is to help someone else. Turns out that we’re just wired that way. I know I that I feel a bit better when I scratch little Betty, our wiener dog, behind the ears and her little tail wags and her soft little eyes stare up at me. I’ve taken a moment to tell her that she’s an important part of our household. It’s all of us deciding to leave our cynicism and our judgements and our preconceptions about people behind and just deciding to be kind to whomever we meet— friend or foe or people we don’t even know (OK that rhymed). So be the pebble…your ripples will spread and spread and affect unknown shores. Scott

Give your kitchen a facelift 12 |

Fifty&Better

WHEN LOOKING FOR A fixer-upper home, HGTV clients often walk into a kitchen with oak cabinets like mine and say, “Ooooh, 90s.” After hearing the comment over and over, I decided to give my kitchen a facelift. Consider these ideas to update your space. Peruse model homes for color ideas. Paint cabinets white or one of today’s trendy colors such as gray, navy or dark green. Hire a painter or do it yourself. I’ve done both. Distressing (roughing up the edges before sealing) the cabinets matched my western décor. Save money on new hardware (door pulls/hinges); shop Wayfair.com. I bought oil rubbed bronze with a twisted look of rope. Change the eating area chandelier and add pendant lights over sink and/or counter. Purchase new or remake curtains/place mats and change the centerpiece to match your décor or the season. Think about these ideas and decide how you might give your kitchen a facelift

Save energy while staying warm IT’S COLD OUTSIDE and your heating bill has skyrocketed. According to experts, heat is the largest homeowner expense. Here are some tips to cut that bill and still stay warm.

1. Have a heating audit and a furnace check up. Save money and do the audit yourself, www.energy.gov/energysaver/do-ityourself-home-energy-audits. 2. Program your thermostat to 68 in daytime and lower at night or during working hours. 3. Layer up. Wear a sweater. 4. Use flannel sheets, add an extra blanket, wear warm pajamas and socks. 5. Keep throws and afghans handy. 6. Bring in the sun’s natural heat during the day–open blind/curtains. 7. Hold the heat in at night – close blinds/ curtains. 8. Cover or close vents in little used rooms. 9. Redirect heat under furniture with vent extenders or adjustable air deflectors. 10. A fter oven cooking, turn it off and leave the door open. 11. Xcel Energy offers rebates. Check them out at www.xcelenergy.com/ programs_and_rebates.

Host your own Winter Olympics watching party PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA opens the XXIII Winter Olympic games with an extravaganza on February 9, 2018. Whether for the opening games or another date, share the viewing with friends and family. Here are some party ideas. Focus on the host country. Decorate with Korean flag colors – black, red, white and blue. Either suggest a potluck of Korean foods or cook them yourself. Consider Korean beef barbeque, www. justonecookbook.com/bulgogi-koreangrilled-beef/ or Spicy Chicken Stir Fry – www.mykoreankitchen.com/dak-galbi/. Add Ginger Tea, www.geniuskitchen. com/recipe/korean-ginger-tea-408717

or Korean beers. Besides Korean desserts, make round sugar cookies frosted in the Olympic Ring colors – blue, black, yellow, red and green. Listen to traditional music at http://www.antiquealive.com/Blogs/ Korean_Traditional_Music.html. Play Korean hand games at http:// www.eatyourkimchi.com/koreanhand-games/. Or Google Olympic Trivia for several quiz ideas. Or, choose a competing country and follow the above suggestions. Have a potluck of various countries’ foods. Use your imagination. What kind of Olympic party do these ideas generate for you?

Social medicine

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT as we age, we place a higher value on emotional wellness, which often is enhanced by being in positive relationships. “Social relationships are often the reason why people, especially older adults, find their lives meaningful,” says Manfred Diehl, university distinguished professor in CSU’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies. “Knowing that other people need us and enjoy our presence and companionship gives us a sense of purpose and direction. This need for meaningful social relationships tends to increase as we get older.” Additionally, friends help us cope with loss and life transitions, which often occur at increasing rates as we get older. Conversely, “social isolation is often a main cause for feelings of loneliness and it is well documented that loneliness is a major cause in developing depression.” So, do yourself some good. Be social. 16 |

Remember when?

MANY PEOPLE ACCEPT that becoming forgetful and perhaps a bit daft are just part of getting old, but cognitive health experts and research say it isn’t so, and you can do a lot to prevent cognitive decline. “Sixty to 70 percent of what impacts us is lifestyle,” says Rich Shipman, a memory fitness facilitator with UCHealth Aspen Club. He says one strategy to prevent mental health issues is to decrease stress in ways that you enjoy, like listening to music, taking a walk or practicing yoga. Dr. Cory Carroll, a Fort Collins family physician, feels “A healthy mind and body is influenced primarily by the food we eat. He recommends eating a whole-food, plant-based diet. “It’s scientifically proven to promote health, whereas the typical American diet promotes disease.” And of course, do things that keep neurons firing strong, like reading, working puzzles and engaging in crafts. Also know that hanging out with other people is just as effective as working puzzles. The bottom line? Exercise, eat well, socialize and keep learning new things. Your brain and your body will thank you.

Pump up IF GETTING OLDER IS getting you down, consider pumping up. “One of the best ways to keep muscles healthy and strong is through exercises called strength training—sometimes known as weight lifting or resistance training,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yuri Coneascenco, a NoCo 50-something Olympic lifter and coach who calls himself “The Crushing Russian,” says strength training has helped him not only feel strong, but also vibrant and confident. He says, when he’s working out, “Older gym folks look at me like I am a crazy phenomenon, but I am trying to be a sport ambassador and show to everybody, no matter how old you are, that lifting weights is a great way to stay in shape and challenge yourself.”

Work off those winter blues THE BEST WAY TO FIGHT off the cold is to immerse yourself in it! Get outside and enjoy the season, while fitting in a little cardio at the same time with a snowshoeing excursion. Great trails abound in the Poudre Canyon, such as the popular Zimmerman Lake Trail, located 58 miles west of US-287 on CO-14. The trail around the lake begins one mile from the parking lot, and the total mileage around the lake is 1.5. For a longer adventure try the 4.75-mile one way Blue Lake Trail, also in the Poudre Canyon, just four miles

east of Zimmerman Lake. Another popular route, Sawmill Creek can be reached via the Blue Lake parking lot, though the trailhead requires a short walk down the road. The trail is 3.5 miles one way to the trail fork, at which point novice snowshoers should head back down to avoid trickier spots on the trail. Visit www.pwv.org/trails/upper-poudre-canyon for trail maps. For snowshoe rentals in Fort Collins, visit Outpost Sunsport (www.outpostsunsport.com), Jax Mercantile CO (www.jaxmercantile.com), or REI (www.rei.com).

If you’ve grown up in the U.S. and its Western approach to medicine— one that relies on drugs and surgeries for healing—you might be skeptical and wary of alternative approaches to health care.

CONSIDER, HOWEVER, THAT cultures all over the world have been treating illness and healing in variety of ways for centuries. Perhaps it’s time to open your mind to different approaches to wellness. Many individual Western medicine providers, as well as large health systems, are responding to demands for alternative approaches—those that take into consideration physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect one’s health. Many of them also are open to blending Western and alternative methods of care

or practicing integrative medicine or Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). UCHealth states, “This melding of traditional medical care with the centuriesold healing arts can help decrease stress, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain and speed recovery.” Here’s some alternative healing methods you may want explore: Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese primary health care system where very thin, sterilized disposable needles are inserted on specific points on a body to release blocked energy, known as Qi (Chee). When Qi flows as it should, a body is able to experience healing and wellness. Susan Goldstone, a licensed acupuncturist at Goldstone Acupuncture

& Whole Health in Fort Collins, says, “As we age, our bodies naturally break down. Acupuncture and other oriental medicine techniques treat the whole person. They help balance the natural rhythms of our bodies, delaying and sometimes reversing what we may be struggling with.” Chiropractic “Chiropractic aims to restore balance within the nervous system and its interpretation of incoming signals and control over outgoing commands, which interacts and manages all other body systems,” explains Dr. Brian Hollstrom of Pivotal Wellness in Fort Collins. He believes classic chiropractic adjustments, which may be combined with an array of other therapeutic stimulating methods, work best when there’s communication

with and co-management of patients’ conditions with their other primary care physicians and specialists. He says, during a first chiropractic visit that you should expect to receive a warm personalized experience including eye contact and a hands-on approach, while thoroughly being examined and treated with the intention that the healing comes from within one’s own body. Reiki Reiki is a gentle, hands-on approach to healing that calls upon the body’s energy by relieving stress and fostering relaxation. According to the International Association of Reiki Professionals, Reiki is a Japanese spiritual healing art, but it’s not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei)

Fifty&Better | 29

which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy.” Erin Sunshine, a Fort Collins Reiki practitioner says, people who will benefit from Reiki are those who: • Need to relax and get more balance • Wish to use Reiki to assist them in their current course of medical or psychological treatment • A re working on developing their own wellness and are not looking for a “magic pill” to do the healing work for them. She notes that “…Reiki is not a ‘cure’ for a particular medical or psychological problem. [Reiki] simply gives energy to support the client in his or her own healing.” Rolfing Rolfing focuses on the body’s connective

tissues, called fascia. Typically, in a series of 10 sessions, a rolfer manipulates soft tissue to release, realign and balance the whole body, thus potentially resolving discomfort, reducing compensations and alleviating pain, according to the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration. Ida Rolf who earned a doctorate degree in biochemistry from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons developed Rolfing in the early 20th century. She says, “When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.” More Some healing approaches are easier experienced than described, like Dynamic Manual Interface (DMI). Gil Wette is a licensed physical

therapist, but his work to help patients experience healing and wellness goes far beyond traditional PT. Believing in the desire and power of the human body to find homeostasis and balance, Wette incorporates DMI techniques into his practice. He says DMI is like a dance, where the practitioner moves with the patient’s body’s energy and rhythm to advance it toward health. Wette says he applies light touch and uses gentle, hands-on manipulation to give people relief from pain and limited mobility issues, or just to help them become healthier and keep moving. Goldstone reminds us that, “Aging should be valued, and we should rejoice and enjoy this time of reaping the harvest of our lives.” And that’s often what alternative medicine helps us to accomplish.

Takeaways from th a 50 High School Reunion

32 |

Fifty&Better

ENCOURAGED BY MY LIFELONG FRIEND and closest high school comrade Jeff, I agreed to travel with him in September to the Detroit area for our 50th high school reunion. Looking back I am glad I went. Not so much to rekindle friendships from decades ago, but more out of a curiosity to

gather perspective on life, clarity of who I am now, and reconnect with what helped shape my identity. SOME TAKEAWAYS All of us brave attendees had much more in common than not. Unlike high school days when we were unsure of who we were, where we fit, how to act, this group of 68 year olds were survivors of a long life. It was clear reading the list of our many deceased classmates that life was continuing to be gifted to each of us. We appreciated we were in part a reflection of what we shared, the paths we walked together in the mid-60s. Each classmate’s story was interesting. There was no division or exclusion. Nothing to prove, nothing to be anxious about, yet still questions about life. There was a sense of

camaraderie and honest appreciation of each other. Whether we were close during high school or not, time was the great connecter of our common story. We discussed whether we were retired or not with not much concern about how we earned a living. We spoke of children and grandchildren. We were honest about health concerns. And we threw in a few recollections defining our communal identity. We laughed. Yes, there were moments when smaller groups formed to tell a common story, transporting me back in time as if nothing had changed….the group of about eight guys who had endured long practices on the football field and the coaches rants, gathered as if we were in the huddle again…or those of us, while touring the high school, stopped in front of Mr. Velkof ’s room where he taught physics, noticing what seemed

to be the same dented gray lockers lining the hallway. Or my favorite… when a group began to form realizing we had all been in Mr. Scholtz’s fifth grade class. We talked of how we saw the playground out the classroom window, remembered walks to the cafeteria to see films or to the nurse’s office to get TB shots…as ten year olds! For a moment the passage of time blurred. It seems like memory, as imperfect as it may be, is the most elementary thread that weaves our story together, connecting then with now, reflecting our deeply personal story yet also reminding us we carry a communal identity of group, place and culture. Memory fetters us, grounds us in some way. I am because I once was…a member of the class of ’67. And then there was something deeply moving, you might say sacred, about

standing in exact spaces, the very places on which I stood and lived my life 50plus years ago. Some has changed, but not the ground, sky, the horizon. Perhaps this feels more dramatic when one lives far from the hometown and has not had the time to stand on these ‘sacred spots’ over the years. But just the same… …standing at the same free throw line where I stood at age 16 in front of screaming fans… in the student lot where I parked Mom’s yellow Mercury on those few days she let drive to school…passing the old house, seeing my bedroom window, visiting with the current owner who purchased it from the family to whom Dad sold it … driving past the corner on Woodward Avenue where the old drive-in used to be, our Friday night hang out…. stopping by the old church the afternoon after the

reunion, walking the same aisle Jeff and I walked as acolytes…the same space, place, years ago. What is time and how to measure it? I left the reunion weekend with a sense of gratefulness and encouragement for the road ahead. I realize going back for a 50th reunion is not the same for everyone. But we all have a past that weaves together a tapestry to help us know who we are with reference points to keep us afloat on our ever-evolving journey. This transition into and through our 50s and beyond has our attention now. Perhaps a 50th high school reunion can be one of those experiences to help clarify our personal story, bringing together time, memory, love, selfhood and mortality. Tinnitus: The Sound that comes from Nowhere Ringing in the ears, buzzing, humming, or crickets are terms often used to describe Tinnitus. Nearly 50 million Americans experience some type of hearing loss, with approximately 20 million dealing with some type of Tinnitus. Tinnitus is your brain’s reaction to a loss of signal from your ear, it’s not a disease in and of itself, but rather a symptom. Do you experience symptoms of Tinnitus, but have been told that you will just have to live with it? Although, there is no cure, Susan has developed her own unique, proven treatment options. Over the past 18 years, Susan has had the opportunity to help hundreds of patients, by listening to each of their needs and treating symptoms individually. Some of the personalized treatment plans include: • Listening to different types of sounds • Hearing aids with Tinnitus Sound Support TM Benefits of treatment plans include: • Shifting Tinnitus to the background, where it belongs • Relief and relaxation, with attention away from your Tinnitus

We can HELP

Just a few comments from patients that have received help from Susan: “My Tinnitus was overbearing at times. I thought there was no way Susan could help me. The devices she had me try not only restored my hearing, but after just a few minutes of wearing the devices, I felt more relaxed and calm.” —Hiliary Brown “After 4-6 weeks of wearing the devices, the noise in the front of my brain moved to the back of the brain! What a relief! It gave me a quality of life.” —Esther If you experience Tinnitus and would like to find your unique treatment plan, contact Susan at Advanced Hearing Services, 970-221-5249.

Keep Your Feet Warm and Cozy EACH SEASON presents unique challenges. Whether you’re tromping through deep snow and sub-zero temperatures in the mountains or contending with damp, chilled, and muddy conditions in town, it’s important to take care of your feet during the winter months. The following are some tips to keep your feet in the best condition possible all winter long: 1. Don’t try to tip-toe through winter snow, ice, and temperatures in summer footwear. Exposing feet to extreme temperatures means risking frostbite and other cold related injuries. Choose winter footwear that will keep your feet warm, dry, and well-supported. 2. Boots are a must-have, especially when dealing with winter precipitation. Boots should be made of waterproof material or a water-proof treatment can usually be applied to them. Socks should be made of a wicking material or wool. Cotton is not recommended as it will actually retain moisture and facilitate heat loss due to convection. Damp and sweaty feet tend to chill more easily making you more vulnerable to

frostbite and more prone to bacterial and fungal infections. 3. Committed runners don’t need to let the cold stop them. A variety of warm, light-weight, and moisture-wicking active wear is available at most running or sporting goods stores to help runners stay warm and dry in the most bitter temperatures. 4. Some runners may compensate for icy conditions by altering how their foot strikes the ground. Instead of changing your foot strike pattern, shorten your stride to help maintain stability. And remember, with any sport it’s more important than ever to warm-up and stretch before you begin as the cold weather can make you less flexible than normal. 5. Winter is skiing and snowboarding season, activities enjoyed by nearly 10 million Americans, according to the National Ski Areas Association. Never ski or snowboard in footwear other than ski boots specifically designed for that purpose. Make sure your boots fit properly; you should be able to wiggle your toes, but the boots should immobilize the heel, instep, and ball of your foot. You can also use orthotics (support devices that go inside shoes) to help control the foot’s movement inside of the boots. 6. Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption when venturing out into extreme temperatures. Nicotine causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) which decreases blood flow to the periphery and alcohol hinders the body’s ability to sense temperature accurately and can cause heat loss. 7. Finally, go inside when feeling too cold and do not ignore your body’s warning signs. If you suspect that you have a coldrelated injury seek emergency medical care. Get out of the cold and into a warm environment as quickly as possible. Keep your feet dry and warm. Do no expose the flesh to extremely warm or hot temperatures (such as fire or a portable heater). A gradual and steady warming procedure should be followed. A Step Ahead Foot & Ankle Center is available for all of your foot-related healthcare needs. Feel free to contact our Fort Collins or Loveland office for an appointment. Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland and Fort Collins, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. Currently accepting new patients.

“I think I do such a tiny piece, but if we can all just make a little bit of difference, and have a little ripple effect, then this world will be a better place.” — Suzanne Barslund 64 |

EVEN THOUGH SUZANNE BARSLUND grew up in a lower middle-class home where time and money were tight, she was taught the value of giving back to her community. She has held on to that lesson and practiced it ever since she was a young child, even while working full time and raising a family. “I believe volunteering should be part of our lives all along the way,” Barslund says. “We’re supposed to live until we die and do for others until we can’t anymore.” Since taking an early retirement in 2006, Barslund has become a full-time volunteer. She’s served in several capacities at her church, helped with disaster relief around the world,

worked with nonprofit organizations and, most recently, supports Realities for Children. In all of her service, she’s known as a “connector,” someone who links people to others they should know, opportunities they’re seeking or resources they need. At Realities, Barslund introduces its membership director to many local business owners she knows, so they can learn about how to get involved in the organization’s crucial work of improving the lives of northern Colorado children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk. “Suzanne’s enthusiasm and foot work of getting local business owners involved may start with a donation request for an upcoming silent auction for a premier event, but often evolves to meeting, learning the history, the organizations’ services and structures, and continuing to help us serve year-round through their Business Membership,” says Shelley Carroll, Realities membership director. “I think I do such a tiny piece,” Barslund responds. “But if we can all just make a little bit of difference, and have a little ripple effect, then this world will be a better place.”
