Give a little

Light up your happy brain TIS THE SEASON FOR JOY AND STRESS. Joy because we get to spend time with family, friends and acquaintances. Joy, too, because we get to give… gifts, time, love. I recently heard that scientists, by doing neuro scans (whatever that means), have shown that being generous seems to make us happy. It seems that when we give, the happy parts of the brain light up. I thought I’d check it out, so I Googled ‘neuroscience altruism.’ While not everyone agrees, it seems that there might be something to it as this somewhat typical story synopsis from NeuroScienceNews.com suggests: Researchers discover converging signs of pure altruism within the brain and noted that the behavior increases as we age. I’m not surprised. I know when I listen to a friend who needs an ear, or drop a buck in someone’s bucket, or give someone a hug and say that they matter to me, I feel better and not just because I can pat myself on the back and tell myself what a wonderful human being I am and thank goodness there are people like me on the planet. I just do. So, as the saying goes: if you’re feeling bad and you want to cheer up, do something nice for someone. Everybody wins. I think we miss a lot of opportunities to be generous because we’re so speedy all the time, especially during the holidays. And that brings me to the stress part of the season. It’s the rush, rush, rush thing. We’re busy with parties, and dinners, and events and it’s all so fun and exciting until we’re finally preparing Christmas dinner and we just crash because we get overwhelmed. I’m thankful for our dog, Charlie. Every morning he insists on a walk. I think he truly believes that his head will explode if we don’t go. It’s his gift to me. I get to start every day with a stroll on a trail or around the neighborhood. I try to be right there on the walk. If thoughts of all the things I have to do today start to creep in I reel myself back to the here and now and enjoy looking at the landscaping of the house we’re walking by or listen to the chirp-chirp from the nearby tree. I’m not perfect at it, but I’ve gotten better and it really helps set a tone for the day. Of course, I don’t need Charlie to go walk, but it does help to have him there telling me his head is about to blow to motivate me. So what I’m going to try to do this year is to slow down when I can...with deadlines and all…and try to focus a little less on me and a little more on the people around me. We’re all rushed and we’re all a little frantic, but a simple gesture here and there, a smile, a moment of conversation, letting someone ahead of you in line, can change the whole day for both of us.

Cool cabin fever WITH SNOW, HOWLING WINDS and freezing temperatures, curling up by a fire with a book suffices for a time. When the walls close in and you need company, invite neighbors, family and/or friends for a game night. Suggest they bring their favorite games or you provide games like Tripoli, scrabble, Bingo, trivial pursuit, puzzles and/or cards. Serve light snacks or a light dinner. Perhaps set a potluck theme – chili, soup, or pizza and plenty of tossed salad. Serve a specialty drink such as mulled wine, hot/spiced cider or unusual ales. Consider different kinds of snack recipes found through Google. Another night, plan a scavenger hunt. Give each household a list of objects. Meet for dinner or drinks at your house and give a prize to the household who checked off the most items. Don’t let the weather give you cabin fever.

Save lives with

life-saving devices POUDRE FIRE AUTHORITY RECOMMENDS you replace your smoke alarms every ten years. Madeline Noblett public affairs manager says purchase a dualsensor product. It senses more flames and less smoke and/or smoldering flames. PFA suggests placing the alarms within reach rather than at the highest point as law required in the past. After installation on each floor, follow manufacturer’s directions for checking and cleaning the alarms monthly. If a homeowner is unable to climb a ladder, Loveland and Fort Collins fire departments offer a service to replace batteries at no charge. Get more information at http://bit.ly/smokealarmfaq. New law requires carbon monoxide (the silent killer) monitors sit within fifteen feet of bedrooms. Should one go off, don’t hunt for a phone, leave the house immediately and call 911 from a neighbor’s house. Colorado has a high incidence of radon in basements. Purchase a kit at the Fort Collins Senior Center – $6 short-term kit or $20 long-term kit.

Eat, drink and be moderate ONE OF THE BEST PARTS of the holidays is the traditional foods and drinks that go along with them. But enjoying too many of those special holiday treats can add up to a lot of extra, unhealthy holiday pounds that you have to deal with in the new year. An easy way to cut back is to be mindful when eating and drinking. Sarah Morales, a dietician in Fort Collins, says, “Your favorite special foods and holiday traditional treats can fit within an overall healthy diet. The key is moderation and balance. Enjoy smaller portions of rich foods and really savor and enjoy them; be sure to include a variety of lower-calorie vegetable options to balance the higher-calorie foods on your holiday plate. Also make an effort to get in some extra physical activity to help balance extra calories in with calories out.”

Maintaining your moderation:

• Use a small plate • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables • O nly take food you think you’ll enjoy. Don’t waste calories on food you really don’t want to eat. • Bring your own healthy dish to share • C hoose a small-size holiday flavored coffee drink and ask for half the syrup or sweetener • Eat and drink slowly. Nibble and sip like a gourmet.

Carve out time for cardio LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE. Better blood flow. Increased metabolism, which leads to weight loss and weight management. Staving off depression. Social time. If you could do one thing to reap all these benefits, would you? Then consider adding cardio exercise to your daily schedule. Cardio exercise is any activity that elevates your heart rate and it’s best to do something aerobically physical 30 minutes per day at least five days a week. “Low functional capacity, muscle weakness and deconditioning are more common in older adults than any other age range,” explains Lauren Bowman, UCHealth Poudre Valley Medical HOLIDAY TIME IS ONE of the most stressful times of the year, but you can keep that stress in check by setting realistic expectations. And you know that endless list of preparatory “to do’s?” Perhaps it’s time to give them a makeover. If you keep up with friends and family on social media, maybe mailing hundreds of personally signed holiday cards isn’t necessary any longer. And maybe that big holiday meal can be enjoyed at a restaurant. Also, it’s okay to ask for help. Don’t feel you have to meet everyone’s expectations at the high cost of your own sanity and health. Give yourself permission to lower your own expectations. Carl Nassar, director at HeartCentered Counseling, suggests that “If you start to feel yourself collapsing into a place of pressure and needing to make everything perfect, pause for a moment and catch your breath. Have compassion for the part of you that wants to get it all just right. It’s a part of you trying (in an old, ineffective way) to make sure you and everyone around you is safe and happy. Then, remind yourself that the best way to be safe and happy is not by being perfect, but rather by enjoying the comfort of being together. Let the holiday be about enjoying each other just as you are, rather than having to be something you’re not (perfect) in the false hope that this’ll make everyone happy.”

Fitness supervisor. “That’s why it is important for older adults to continue living a healthy lifestyle involving aerobic exercise and muscular strengthening exercises to improve their quality of life and ability to be independent.” Whether you like to walk, swim, bike or perhaps something more strenuous like running or skiing, choose a variety of ways to keep moving to help keep from getting bored. You also might want to work out with a friend. Research shows that exercising with others adds motivation and fun. On a cautionary note, if you’ve not been active for a while, speak to your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Broaden your world view through the eyes of an artist

VISIT “PASSPORT TO PAINTING” at the Loveland Museum/Gallery December 10 to February 19 featuring Loveland’s retired dentist, traveler, volunteer, artist Dr. Richard “Dick” Schilling. He captures everything from the grasslands of Africa to the prairies of Nebraska in more than 100 works of watercolor, oil, pastel and ink drawings of impressionistic landscapes, wood sculpture, sketchbooks and diary entries. These works exemplify his love of art, nature and service to those in need. Although born and raised in Nebraska, the family often traveled to Colorado. He graduated from the University of Nebraska. “As a kid I was invited to take painting lessons on Saturday mornings in the university’s art department. The seeds were planted, and in time, others pruned and groomed me into an artist.” His many awards and three books are proof of that statement.

Time’s gift Looking back as we move forward

Bob Calhoun

WHAT BRINGS US MEANING in this third stage of life? One source of meaning, I would suggest, results from our conscious appreciation of the gathered experience and insight that comes with the passage of time. Simply in looking back upon life with a curious and compassionate eye, we can discover greater meaning, courage and joy in living forward into the years ahead of us. Obviously, the longer view of life is one we could not obtain until our fifties and beyond, a view where we know things about our self and the world we could never have known or appreciated when younger. But ‘time’s gift’ to us is in recognizing the ways our life story continues to feed us and embolden us on our journey.

Letting go

We are better prepared to let go of judgement, regret, guilt, sorrow, and turn our focus toward the courage, resilience, hopefulness, creativity, adventurousness, and openness... seen the ‘good, the bad, and the ugly.’ Yet we are now in a place to bring compassion and wisdom to all we know about our self and the world as we have experienced it. We are better prepared to let go of judgement, regret, guilt, sorrow, and turn our focus toward the courage, resilience, hopefulness, creativity, adventurousness, and openness…all qualities that have matured over our many years and helped us make it to this point in life. Many wise souls have written about how looking back with compassion on the story of our lives, appreciating our life’s twists and turns, sufferings felt and survived, adventures

both joyful and arduous, triumphs despite all odds, acts of human connection and kindness… yes, the looking back on all these can provide meaning to our life as we live it right now, and see it as a life worth taking forward, courageously embracing what life has yet in store for us.

Drawing on experience

Life presents each of us with many opportunities from which to draw upon our past to help enrich and encourage us on our conscious elder path. We will have weddings, reunions, deaths of parents, children, dear friends…graduations, travels

that take us to old haunts and to new places… Lightfoot, Simon or Dylan concerts, world tragedies, and the Cubs winning the World Series…all to remind us of who we are and what we bring with us on this journey.

Back to the future

This past September I had the joy of spending eight days canoeing in the waters of Killarney Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada with my old friend, Steve. We took this same trip 25 years ago with a couple of our pre-teen children. This time, the ‘kids’ were in their mid-30s. Steve and I could still hold our own with the

paddling and the portaging, and we had some good stories to tell. But now we witnessed the strength, leadership, and confidence in our children, qualities we modeled for them a quarter century ago. As we stepped back and let them lead, we were grateful for this continuing story, and drew on our kids’ strength as we face new challenges as men in our mid-60s. Steve and I met as 20-year-olds, teaching kids at summer camp to canoe. As lifelong friends, it seems much has not changed … there is that unspoken acceptance of who we each are. We share a deep optimism about life, we still philosophize as we did back then, but with a softer tone and more of an appreciation for what we don’t know. 30 |

Yes, the bodies have changed and we talk more about health issues and grandkids. But there is great comfort in knowing and affirming each other’s story. Some things stay the same, and some things change as they will and must. Many changes seem very natural, many do not. Many joyful, many painful. This elder journey is like that…but it is in part ‘time’s gift’ of our story that can strengthen our resolve to go forward in these years, reminding us daily of the richness of life lived, encouraging us to live and to love fully, with a twinkle in the eye, a skip in the step, and with a perspective that will get us through the challenges ahead as we get older…so be it.

LIFE Asking for help to navigate transitions

LIFE IS DYNAMIC. A compilation of transitions that help shape us into who we are. As we age, it may seem that life’s transitions come at us with increasing speed and keeping up with the changes may feel overwhelming. Retirement is often the first major change older people experience. Some welcome it as a time to do life differently, to redefine themselves and pursue adventures and opportunities not available to them when holding down a full-time job or raising a family. Others may struggle with feeling a loss of identity, purpose and income. Relocating is another common transition for older people. A host of issues may dictate a move from the family house to one that’s smaller or to a residential care facility or in with family. People who have some control over where they move to have a tendency to cope better with the change. Those who have less or no say in the move may not fare as well.

changes

We also eventually experience the loss of our health, a partner and friends as we age.

It’s okay to grieve and mourn

“We cannot overcome aging and death,” says Alan Wolfelt, director of the Fort Collins-based Center for Loss and Life Transition. “As our bodies change, we lose function and, society tells us, beauty. We lose our careers and sometimes our houses, our lifestyles, our finances. Our children grow up and move away. And one by one, our friends and family members begin to take their leave from us here on earth. And so we can’t help but grieve.” Wolfelt helps people understand that grief and mourning are necessary in the aging process. Grief encompasses the internal feelings we have about loss and mourning is the outward expression of those feelings. “Authentic mourning is how you integrate losses and move through them to what comes next. Then and only then do you have the space for the wisdom that aging urges you to discover and share.”

Ask for help

When faced with challenging circumstances and changes, pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps and soldiering on seems the accepted

Six Steps to Successfully Deal With Loss These steps are excerpted from Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s book The Journey Through Grief, which is available at www.centerforloss.com and bookstores nationwide.

1. Acknowledge the reality of the loss This first step involves gently confronting the reality that someone or something you care about will never come back into your life again. 2. Embrace the pain of the loss It is easier to avoid, repress or deny the pain of grief than it is to confront it, yet it is in confronting our pain and getting well acquainted with it that we learn to reconcile ourselves to it. 3. Remember what’s lost Photographs and souvenirs are examples of some of the things that give testimony to a different form of a continued relationship with whom or what you lost. Embrace memories of the past; doing so will help you feel hopeful about the future. 4. Develop a new self-identity Part of your self-identity comes from the relationships you have with other people, your job, where you live, etc. When someone with whom you have a relationship dies, if you retire or if you move, part of your self-identity naturally changes. You may feel a temporarily heightened dependence on others, as well as feelings of helplessness, frustration, inadequacy and fear. Eventually, accepting a new identity will empower you to live with a new-found confidence. 5. Receive ongoing support from others You cannot—nor should you try to—deal with loss alone. Draw on the experiences and encouragement of friends, fellow mourners or professional counselors to help you heal. 6. Reconcile your grief People do not “get over” grief. A more appropriate term for what occurs as a mourner works to integrate the new reality of moving forward in a changed life is reconciliation. Hope will emerge and you will move forward as you make commitments to the future, realizing that who or what you lost will never be forgotten.

American way of coping. This philosophy may not always be advisable or healthy, however. Sometimes—often times—it’s better to ask for help. Jennifer Markiewicz, Colorado Transition Partners principal, explains, “Often when we’re presented with major changes, we find ourselves navigating unfamiliar systems. When this happens as a direct result of crisis, such as loss of a loved one or divorce, we can’t expect to become overnight experts in law, Social Security, finance, taxes, etc. Further, these issues are labor-intensive. When people are experiencing emotional turmoil, they should enlist help to

make sure that the matters are addressed thoughtfully and thoroughly. At the very least, asking someone to help you create a ‘punch list’ will help to focus priorities to ensure both legal compliance and personal well-being.”

Aging is an opportunity

Aging shouldn’t be considered all about decline and loss. On the contrary, as Betty Friedan, an American writer, activist and feminist, explains, “Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” It’s a new season in which we can relax and become true to ourselves.

Author Anne Lamott, in her book, Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith, writes: “Age has given me what I was looking for my entire life—it has given me me. It has provided time and experience and failures and triumphs and time-tested friends who have helped me step into the shape that was waiting for me.” Wolfelt says, “Growing older gives us time to find the natural rhythms that best suit us, [so try to] imagine your final decades not as a time of dismal, depressing decline, but as one of opportunity and fulfillment, one to truly enjoy and even cherish.”

An open heart When helping others gets in your blood Local senior RSVPs to help

Planting seeds of compassion reaps a harvest of good for all KIM SHARPE 64 |

Fifty&Better

ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG has spent the majority of her life as a cultivator. Working alongside her husband on their Midwest farm, she raised three children, plus beef cattle, hogs, sheep and chickens. The couple also grew grain for feed and had a large garden. At 82 and now living in Greeley with one of her daughters, one could say Armstrong is still in the farming business, but now she cultivates a better quality of life for others. When she moved to northern Colorado 10 years ago, Armstrong needed a way to meet people and learn her way around. “I didn’t want to just sit around the house and talk to the dog,” she says. “I wanted to connect with people my own age and do something useful.” With those seeds of motivation in her hands, Armstrong sought out volunteer opportunities through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program

Photos courtesy of Weld County RSVP

(RSVP) of Weld County where her compassion for others has taken root and bloomed. Armstrong has many duties at RSVP. Every week, she helps call and take grocery orders from as many as three dozen people who are shut in due to illness or physical disabilities. After the orders are in, she sorts them into delivery routes and then takes all of the orders to a local King Soopers where they are filled. Staffing booths at events is another job Armstrong enjoys. She assists with Weld Project Connect, an annual, one-day event where individuals and families who are struggling due to housing instability, job loss, health problems and other life-disrupting issues receive on-site help. She also staffs the annual Veterans Stand Down Day where homeless

vets can find services they need, as well as the Senior Law Day event, a one-stop-shop for people with legal questions. “Liz Armstrong is one of the pillars of whom the Retired Senior Volunteer Program is about. Liz gives her time and energy to the various programs because she is needed,” says Marcia Shafer, RSVP of Weld County director. “Her expertise with the Grocery Shopping Program assists both the clients and the other volunteers in making the program work.” At the end of the day, Armstrong believes she benefits as much from volunteering as the people she serves. “I just want to help others while I can. It gives me purpose in my retirement years, as well as bringing out the best in me.”
