Food is medicine

Choose wisely—as often as you can A JAR OF BACTERIA and yeast sits on our counter at home. They are bound together in little colonies called grains and, as far as I’m concerned, their job is to convert the milk that I poured in into kefir. The bacteria start the party and the yeasts finish it off leaving behind a whole host of different probiotic bacteria.

A friend gave me some grains to start my own kefir years ago, I haven’t stopped making it. I make a little kefir shake with banana, blueberries, almond butter and some chia seeds. It feels like a little cocktail of gut health.

They’re prolific little buggers, so I’ve been able to split off many jars myself and hand them off to friends who seem interested. Turns out that keeping your guts healthy can affect all kinds of things that you might not suspect: it can be related to feelings of stress and anxiety and affect your sleep.

Be sure to catch Kim Sharpe’s story, Trust your gut, for a check on your gut. I know that it might sound crazy, but what you put into that ol’ GI tract really affects you. I like to think of food as medicine and view everything that I put in there as either helping or hurting.

It’s not that I never choose poorly about what to eat. In fact, I had some Tater Tots with my veggie bean burger last night. The important thing though is that it’s a choice not just a habit. I looked at the menu, saw the obvious healthful choice of salad and very mindfully, as we say now, decided that rabbit food just wasn’t going to cut it right then.

So when I said, yes I’d like Tater Tots with that veggie bean burger (yet another conscious choice), I meant it. I even extolled the virtues of Tater Tots, though none of those virtues wandered into the good-for-you realm.

And I guess that brings us around to the bigger-picture theme here: making choices and not just muddling through with our usual patterns of thought and behavior (though I didn’t realize that that was where our journey would lead to when I started writing this. Writing is a process of discovery sometimes).

Maybe I was influenced by Bob Calhoun’s story about choices we make that affect our emotional and spiritual life now and in the future. But we must make those choices and take some action.

And deciding to take care of our health could be one of those choices and one of the subsequent actions could be eating kefir! (A little forced? Well, I had to figure out how to tie it all up in neat little bow.)

Here’s to friendly yeast and bacteria. May we continue our symbiotic relationship for many years to come.

The deep clean

PLANNING WINTER HOLIDAY entertaining? Consider some deep house cleaning and repairs. Seth of United Window Cleaning says, “People who only professionally clean their windows once a year, typically do it in summer.” Still, he emphasized that twice a year is preferable. Spring and fall are their busiest times. Even with fall rains, clean windows prevent spotting because months of dust have been removed. Clean exterior screens also avert spotting.

Once your house sparkles, decorate for the seasons.

Your guests will appreciate your efforts.

Fall clean-out TO MAKE LIFE SIMPLER, think about a fall house cleanout rather than a spring cleaning. But…what do you do with all those things you no longer want or need?

Nonprofits’ websites list what they will or will not take.

Most nonprofits won’t accept mattresses, large desks or upholstered furniture. Many do curbside pickups. Recycling or internet sales might not be a solution. Companies like Got Junk specialize in picking up your unwanted items then selling, donating or recycling them. Costs can run a little high.

Another option is Freecycle.org. This online service lists items people in your area want or offer for the taking. Garage sales provide a little income. The rule there says price items at 10 percent of cost. Save yourself some work; join a neighborhood sale and let them do promotion. No matter how you get rid of your extras, remember – One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Preparing your lawn and garden for winter

FOLLOW THESE TIPS from professionals and get a head start on winterizing your lawn and gardens.

Fossil Creek Nursery suggested, “The two most important winterizing jobs for lawns are proper fall fertilizing and deep root watering.” Preferably aerate or dethatch before spreading a fertilizer that contains less nitrogen and more potassium and middle number phosphorous to strengthen roots. Deep water before the ground freezes. Wrap young, immature tree trunks; mulch roses and perennials.

Some bushes need to be pruned in spring after blooming like lilacs. Fall pruning prevents spring blossoms from setting. Study the information on your plants. Cut back other bushes once they are dormant.

Collect annual flower seeds as the plants wither; pull up plants and discard or compost. Take cuttings of geraniums, coleus and begonias for houseplants.

Pull all weeds before they go to seed.

Then, relax while perusing gardening catalogs and making plans for next spring.

WATER IS VITAL TO LIFE, but as we age, several factors can contribute to chronic dehydration, sucking the life right out of us.

Many common medications used to treat blood pressure issues and depression can cause dehydration. Aging kidneys are less able to conserve water. Plus, many people just feel less thirsty as the

years go by, making water intake less of an obvious need. But daily drinking an adequate amount of H2O is absolutely necessary to help maintain homeostasis in our bodies.

Suspect that you need to drink more water if your urine is a dark yellow color (concentrated), you don’t sweat or produce tears, or your mouth feels sticky.

Dehydration also may contribute to not feeling as mentally sharp as normal, dizziness, grumpiness and fatigue.

A generally accepted rule of thumb is to drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day. Coffee and tea count, too. But don’t wait to drink up until you’re thirsty. Simply sip on water throughout each day.

Type 2 diabetes 101

ARE YOU ONE OF FOUR Americans who will develop Type 2 diabetes after the age of 60? If your body—specifically your pancreas—quits producing enough insulin, or using it efficiently, to absorb nutrients from the food you eat for energy, know it’s still possible to live a long, active life. According to the American Diabetes Association, “There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be managed. Balancing the food you eat with exercise and medicine (if prescribed) will help you control your weight and can keep your blood glucose in the healthy range. This can help prevent or delay diabetes complications.”

Smoothing out your night moves IF YOU’RE OVER THE age of 50 and notice sex isn’t as wet as it once was, you’re not alone.

While vaginal dryness can occur at any age, menopausal and post-menopausal women often suffer from this condition because it’s associated with a decrease in estrogen, a hormone that helps keep vaginal tissue moist and lubricated.

Fortunately, lubricant products can provide a slick remedy to help intercourse feel comfortable.

Men can benefit from lubrication, too. Many aging males are plagued by an inability to become easily aroused because their genitals become desensitized to erotic touch.

But with longer sessions of foreplay enhanced by lubrication, men can find enjoyment between the sheets once again.

If wetter is better, which lubes work best? As reported by the AARP, three types of lubricants are available over the counter at most pharmacies: 1. Water-based lubricants are inexpensive, non-staining,

safe to ingest in small amounts, and safe to use with latex contraception. Use liberally during extended lovemaking sessions, however, as they may evaporate.

2. Oil-based (think coconut) or aloe-based lubes are safe to ingest, safe for use with latex, but some may stain. Read labels when shopping for natural, non-staining lubricants.

3. Silicone-based lubes provide a silky feel and are safe to use along with latex protection, but they may not be healthy for ingestion.

Note: Petroleum-based products, like Vaseline® or baby oil, are not recommended as sexual lubricants because they can damage vaginal chemistry, stain, and are neither safe to ingest or to use with latex condoms or diaphragms.

Fantastic fall foliage

WITH THE COOLING WEATHER and changing colors, fall is the perfect time to head into the mountains and welcome the autumn season by taking in the fall foliage.

This month, take drive into the foothills and take in the fall colors followed by a picnic and a hike without needing to avoid the crowds, traffic, and mid-day heat.

Natural areas are in abundance in northern Colorado so there are seemingly limitless options for an afternoon outside stretching the legs to watch wildlife and see the scenery. There are more than 50,000 designated acres of natural areas in northern Colorado towns and cities. Whether you stay right in your hometown or head to the foothills, the options for a day in nature are many.

Take highway 287 and head up Highway 14 and see the sights of the Poudre River and the changing fall colors on your way to a local trailhead; take highway 34 towards and through Estes Park to see the fall foliage and visit Rocky Mountain National Park; spot birds and wildlife in the plains of Weld County.

Harvest time at a winery THE BEST TIME TO VISIT is during harvest for three reasons: the weather is a little cooler, the grapes are ripe and everywhere is bustling with activity. Wine harvest season in Colorado takes place for about three months each year—August, September, and October— because wine grapes ripen at different rates.

Laying the groundwork Strengthen purpose and contentment in later years

MOVING THROUGH THIS second half of life, the path is not always clear.

It’s full of many unknowns; so much out of our control. Are there ways of being and thinking that can increase meaning and enjoyment on this journey leaving us with a positive sense of living a full and complete life?

I recently read A Life Complete,

by Sallirae Henderson, in which she summarizes her counseling folks in their later years, studying differences between those who look back with a sense of contentment and those who look back with regret and negativity.

She studied their early decisions about life, values, spirituality and philosophy and concludes there are choices individuals make as they move into their 50s and beyond that have a direct bearing on their emotional and spiritual life in later years.

She identifies six emotional and spiritual skills/strategies that positively strengthen purpose and contentment and lead to what she calls a sense of ‘completion of self ’.

Befriending yourself. This is all about self-acceptance, looking at your life without judgement, like a good

compassionate friend. Appreciating ones effort on the journey. Honoring your unique story. Central is selfcare and nurturing and maintaining friendships with folks who have known you in your earlier years.

Learning to grieve. Grieving well, accepting that change/ loss are integral parts of life, is central to a good spirit in the last half of life. Good grieving allows room to be open to new vistas and possibilities and prepares us for our own death.

Believing you always make a difference. Trusting there is never a time when we cannot make a difference, we will have the basis for positive meaning and purpose until the end. Just in being a loving presence you are a gift for the other and the world, even if you are the one receiving care.

Finding your true compass. Look within, shift your primary focus from an external to an internal landscape. Identify the foundation that holds when all else is lost, even impending death… that something that becomes more and more your reference point.

Identify a larger context for your life.

Henderson writes, “Once we find and experience our larger context, we open ourselves to the possibilities it holds and grow into an understanding of the vital part of it that we are.” Believing what we do in our little way contributes to the greater whole supports a sense of purpose and prepares us for the end of our life.

Develop a philosophy/theology of receiving. “The emotional and spiritual ability to receive,” Henderson writes, “is essential to maintaining any sense of dignity and self in old age.” Honor all the ways you have given. Learn to be a receiver. Receiving is a form of mature dependence. Begin to practice in middle age to receive help from others.

These are helpful ideas to ponder. It takes thoughtfulness and intentionality to embrace them. But worth the time and effort.

I would add one more: Appreciate each day for the great gift that it is!

THIRTY FEET. That’s how far every bite of food you ingest travels from the tip of your tongue till it exits through your anus at the end of the journey. Generally, food moves smoothly and steadily through your gastrointestinal tract unless something blocks the way or slows down the process. What can throw the trip off ? Certainly, gut health is impacted by the food you eat, but it’s also very much impacted by your lifestyle.

Insoluble fiber (also called roughage), you get from eating vegetables and whole grains. It’s not digestible, but does help move food and waste through the gut. Soluble fiber found in foods, like oats, nuts, seeds and legumes, absorbs water and turns gel-like and gives your stools a nice consistency—not too hard, not too soft.

Julie Gormley, UCHealth registered dietician, says, “When it comes to modifying your diet for optimal gut health, eat mostly whole foods and less processed food.

A whole food is in as close to its natural form as possible. For example, eat fresh or frozen berries with your breakfast instead of a berry breakfast bar.”

Routine rocks As humans, we tend to be creatures of habit, favoring dependable routines over constantly changing conditions. Our gut is right there with us. It’s happiest when it gets fed and watered at regular intervals throughout each day.

Experts say we should begin our routine by eating breakfast every morning. Enjoying a morning meal of gut-friendly food wakes up your digestive system and sends it signals to get moving.

Water you waiting for?

Up to 60 percent of the human body is made of water. Water plays a role in many bodily functions, including keeping food and waste material flowing through those 30 feet of twisting, turning terrain.

So, how much is “enough?” According to the Mayo Clinic, an adequate fluid intake for men is 3 liters (about 13 cups) and 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) for women. People who live in hot dry climes or those who exercise a lot and perspire more may need to drink more water. But other beverages you drink, like coffee and tea, and fruits and vegetables you eat contain water, too, and count toward your water intake.

Brain waves and butterflies Have you ever had a gut reaction to an event or piece of news?

There’s a reason for that.

Our thoughts and emotions can and do affect how our digestive tract feels and functions.

Conversely, when our gut feels off, we may feel anxious or stressed.

Given this brain-gut connection, “…you might expect that at least some [people] with functional GI conditions might improve with therapy to reduce stress or treat anxiety or depression. And sure enough, a review of 13 studies showed that patients who tried psychologically based approaches had greater improvement in their digestive symptoms compared with patients who received only conventional medical treatment, reports Harvard Medical School.

Of course, one approach to managing stress is exercise, which also chemically supports gut health.

exercise, like walking and running, increase your heart rate and stimulate intestinal contractions.

Sit ups, twisting and abdominal stretches help strengthen the muscles that act to squeeze waste out of your body.

L-O-C-A-L Eating locally produced food is good for you and the community

s public demand for transparency from the food industry increases, so does the number and variety of advertisements for “healthier options.” With terms such as “all natural,” “non-GMO,” “farm to table,” “pasture raised” and “free range” making their way into nearly every grocery store and restaurant, it’s more confusing than ever deciding which options are worth the extra buck, and which are little more than gimmicks.

Labels with ambiguous terms like the ones above can be enough to make anyone throw their hands up in exasperation and go back to their old standby brands, but there is a label that’s easy to look for and understand, and it consists of just one five-letter word.

“Local.” That’s the word LoCo Food Distributor’s founder, Elizabeth Mozer says folks should be on the look out for when trying to be food conscious in the grocery store and when out to eat. Her food sourcing business delivers to four major chain grocers in the area, as well as several independent stores and restaurants.

“Often we’re supporting small businesses that got their starts at farmer’s markets and grew from there,” says Mozer.

“We look for things that are locally made, such as salsas, sauces, kombucha, cold-brewed coffee, flour, spiced nuts and hot sauc-

es, as well as produce.”

Mozer’s business was born out of an evident need for a centralized local food distributor in northern Colorado.

She and her husband had spent years making the rounds to hunt down locally produced food for customers of their business, Lyric Cinema Cafe.

“We were trying to source locally and it was so hard that we realized there was a real need there,” says Mozer. “Vendors were having a hard time streamlining their wholesalers.”

Although turning that hole in the market into a successful business was a risky move, the Mozers were determined to find an efficient way to offer the same locally grown and crafted food to their

customers that they had always insisted on feeding to their own children.

“Locally made products are geared toward health benefits,” says Mozer.

“Because they’re usually made in smaller batches you often find that these products are made with less sugar and with more organic ingredients and other ingredients that are generally healthier.”

While local food is often healthier, Mozer says that doesn’t make it any less delicious. “We carry chocolate but it’s more high quality without all the fillers; often it’s a dark chocolate. Folks are trying to make the best product they can and the health benefits go hand in hand with that.”

Sustainability is another aspect that

lured Mozer into the local food industry.

“Because local foods are often made on a smaller scale, in smaller batches, there’s more ability to source ingredients carefully,” she says. “Organic and nonGMO ingredients are more sustainable as well as better for your health.”

By keeping it local, consumers can also cut hundreds or even thousands of miles off their food’s travel time, resulting in fresher food and less gas and pollution for the environment.

“It’s hard to gauge how many miles we’re using because we do drive this stuff all over the place, but there’s a big difference between where our food goes and food that’s going from here in Colorado to a distribution center in

California, then back here to stores, which frequently happens with national brands.”

While buying local foods can feel like a harder hit to the wallet, there are economical benefits as well.

“When you buy local you’re recirculating local dollars,” says Mozer. “Dollars that are spent with a community-based company stay in the community a lot longer.”

With locally grown and crafted foods becoming common commodities at mainstream restaurants and grocers, it’s easier than ever to take a huge step toward better eating, without spending valuable time researching labels.

“By supporting local farmers, producers and businesses, you’re supporting your friends and neighbors,” says Mozer. “At the same time, you get the benefit of knowing where your food is coming from and what’s going into it.”

Feel good in your feet for Fall As summer winds down and autumn approaches you might be noticing that your feet are a little worse for the wear. Summer is a time for sandals and fun in the sun, however, it can leave us with a number of troublesome issues such as hard calluses, dry and cracked skin and athlete’s foot infections, not to mention numerous aches and pains from all the flip flops and barefoot walking. Fortunately, there are several easy tips one can use to get those feet back into shape in no time.

When feet are exposed to water and moisture for too long, fungal growth can occur. This is often referred to as Athlete’s foot, which is a common problem during the hot summer months when our feet sweat much more and we tend to spend more time at the lake or pool-side. Rather than wear one pair of shoes day in and day out, it is best to rotate through a few pairs. This allows the shoes to fully dry out prior to wearing them again. In addition to this, using a wicking sock can help to draw moisture out and away from the skin. Make sure the spaces between the toes are always dried well and avoid lotion between the toes. Once an infection has developed it is best to contact your podiatrist for a prescription to treat the infection.

Failure to treat the infection can lead to other problems, such as toenail infections or break down of the skin that can lead to

cellulitis, a serious bacterial infection that may require antibiotics, hospitalization and/or surgery.

While some of us have issues with feet that are too wet, others have the opposite problem and struggle with calloused, dry and cracking skin. Regular use of a foot file or pumice stone can help to reduce the discomfort from painful calluses and an exfoliating scrub can help loosen dry, dead skin. If the skin is beginning to crack, getting the calluses thinned down is a key part of treatment. Once the calluses are taken care of use a thick moisturizing cream or ointment on the affected area and cover with socks or plastic wrap for the night. This will help to hold all that moisture in and your heels should be feeling baby smooth within a week. If this fails to do the trick reach out to your podiatrist as there are many excellent prescription creams available for this very purpose. Lastly, don’t forget to stay hydrated!

One of the greatest pleasures of summer, in my opinion, is walking barefoot in sand at the beach or through some nice cool grass. However, this can certainly take its toll on the skin of the foot as previously discussed. In addition to this, frequent barefoot walking or wearing flip flops and strappy sandals through the summer months can contribute to several forms of overuse injuries. These include such bad actors as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis and stress fractures.

Naturally, the best solution is prevention. Begin the summer months by wearing more supportive sandals. Many of the hiking style sandals are very well constructed and are designed to allow for hours of use on uneven and varied terrain. This would be my first recommendation. If hiking sandals aren’t for you, fortunately there are many companies that are making dress-style sandals with good arch support as well. If the damage is already done and you are experiencing foot, ankle or leg pain, it is time to seek professional help. MERCEDES GIL IS BY NATURE a structured person—some people call her driven. So, serving as a volunteer with SAINT (Senior Alternatives in Transportation) and driving people to appointments, or wherever they need to go, is right up her alley.

“VOLUNTEERING FOR SAINT is good for someone like me who likes to be organized and on schedule,” Gil says.

SAINT volunteer coordinator Theresa Holbrook says the organization is grateful for Gil and the organization’s other 140+ volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to ensure clients have safe and reliable rides, which enable them to maintain a level of independence and self-sufficiency.

“We wouldn’t have a program without our volunteers.

They open car doors, assist people in and out of their vehicle, and to the door of their destination,” explains Theresa Holbrook. “They give of their time and energy and interact with our riders, so must enjoy meeting and helping people.”

Gil says, “I’m inspired by the people I drive because they have a ‘Let’s make it work’ attitude. I’ve met many interesting people, too—people I wouldn’t otherwise have met—from native Colorado farmers (I was raised as a suburban New Yorker, so this is interesting to me), to professional

musicians (like a retired Russian violinist), to WWI vets. Plus, driving for SAINT is an excellent way to help other people directly. You immediately see the benefits of your effort.”

In addition to social interaction and instant gratification for work performed, “driving for SAINT is a convenient way to volunteer a few hours each week on your own schedule, which is suitable both for retirees, parttime workers, or stay-at-home caregivers of school-age children,” she says.

SAINT drivers, like Gil, must be able to adjust quickly to turns in the road, both literally and figuratively. “As you can imagine every day provides a new challenge,” says Holbrook.

“Rides get cancelled, drivers get sick, riders forget their pick-up times, but our drivers are truly ‘SAINTS’ with their flexibility and willingness to step up.”

SAINT is always looking for more people like Gil to take the wheel and drive home the message that you can help make the world a better place by helping others, one ride at a time.
