Captain of your ship

Rising to challenges in the Third Phase AN OLD FRIEND VISITED LAST WEEKEND. We were best friends on and off from fourth grade on. He brought some pictures that he’d had digitized of a trip we’d taken together in 1979 after our first year of college. It was fun to look those over. We hadn’t seen each other since 2000 when we had run the Horsetooth Half marathon together. We talked about what we’d been doing since then. At that time, we were 40 years old and in the height of busyness…kids, jobs, activities. We were also pretty dang healthy. What a difference 16 years makes! Kids are out of the house…mostly, for both of us. Our lives are quieter and we’re both thinking about and starting to live The Third Age. That’s what Kim Sharpe’s feature story is about: how to approach this typically third phase of life. Her story ends with a quote from Bruce Mondschain, an aging-well consultant, who points out that we can live in this stage, as in all stages, as a victim of our circumstances or a captain of our ship. One of those circumstances we can be victims of is our health. Try as we might, it seems something hurts or goes bad. Fortunately, more and more can be done to keep us feeling good and active. For me it was atrial fibrillation (which I’ve written about before) that kept me from exercising as I wanted to and affected my bon vivant lifestyle. I got that fixed a couple of months ago, and it seems to be working. Back to my old friend. He had a good career as a surgeon when early last year he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Goodbye career. But he’s a captain-of-his-own-ship kind of person and instead of moping about what he can no longer do, such as ride his motorcycle, he’s looking straight at it and figuring out what he can do. He was able to retire and he’s been travelling and has more plans to travel as long as he can. Aside from getting the rundown on what was up with that, our time was filled with fun and laughter. We can do so much to remain healthy (see Katie Harris’ feature story), but only so much. Most, maybe all, of my aging friends have some physical or health challenge…from struggles with weight control to some illness to challenging knees. We talk about it, of course, but rarely, if ever, do our conversations devolve into victim territory. It seems best to live as captains. Be well, Scott

Repurpose your possessions

IMPROVING THE FEEL OF YOUR HOME does not require a huge expense. Simply shop your house rather than a store and repurpose your possessions. Rearrange furniture within a room. Replace or add a piece from another room, such as an unused desk behind a floating sofa. Use it to display favorite collections, serve as a bar or to store and organize mail, keys, gloves and scarves. From the kitchen choose bowls, glasses, jars and/or trays to systematize jewelry, 12 |

make-up brushes or office supplies. Turn a twin bed into a daybed with pillows and a colorful coverlet. Rearrange book shelves by placing books vertically and horizontally; then add plants and pictures. Or, change a little-used room such as the dining room into an office. Gather all your book shelves and line one wall. Turn the table into a desk with a lamp, chair and visitor seating. When needed, remove your work to serve a special dinner.

View your spaces with new eyes CREATE VIGNETTES THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME. For example, move an accent table, chest of drawers or cabinet to the entry. Frame a favorite fabric remnant or stretch it like a canvas to fashion an art work that anchors the vignette. Stack favorite books, a plant and/or pictures beneath it. Secondly, add to your office book storage. Turn square baskets on their side, stack them or spread them across the desk’s back edge and shelve books inside. In the dining room, restyle your china cabinet for a cleaner, designer look. Put like colors and items together to form collections. Replace the dining room centerpiece with a tablescape. Scrunch a tablecloth catty corner across the top like a runner. Add candles or decorative items and arrange everything throughout the folds focusing on different heights. Make it simple or elaborate. Lastly, bring the outdoors into every room–fill containers with seasonal leafy branches, pumpkins, pinecones, evergreens, flowers, twigs.

A quart of paint makes a bold statement MAKE YOUR HOME BETTER with a personal statement – paint your front door a different color. Here are some meanings of standard colors. The ever popular red says “Welcome” and indicates you have a hospitable home. If you want to show a feeling of trustworthiness and peace, paint your door blue. Orange suggests optimism, wisdom and a social attitude. Grey is dignified and neutral indicating you prefer to compromise and also serves as a background for entry decorations. Green implies calmness, tradition, money and ambition. Leave your door its natural wood or paint it brown and visitors know you are down to earth, warm, generous and reliable. When you step behind a black door, expect orderliness and control in simple elegance. Glass doors imply you are open-minded, friendly and outgoing. Purple says you take risks, dream big and possess a free spirit. White means clean lines, simple and organized.

Traditional Technology

Oticon Opn™

a new kind of hearing instrument

Complex listening environments such as restaurants, groups, church and family gatherings can be challenging for people who have hearing problems. How do you feel after straining to follow the multiple conversations in these environments? Tired? You feel tired because your brain is missing the important speech details. Your brain is unable to separate all the sounds you are hearing and make sense of them. Yes, your brain even wants the background noise. What would it be like if you could listen to multiple speakers in noisy environments? If you could focus on what’s important to you and switch attention if you want to? Oticon Opn™ is so fast it can give you access to multiple speakers around you that you want to listen to and reduce noise at the same time.

Hear better, remember more, with less effort* Oticon Opn™ improves your ability to understand speech even in challenging environments by 30%, compared to the previous generation of hearing instruments. That means less listening effort for you. You don’t have to work as hard to understand, leaving more mental energy to remember what you hear.

Exceptionally fast processing speed makes it possible Oticon Opn™ has 50 times faster than the previous generation. Opn™ scans your environment more than 100 times per second to distinguish speech from noise. Both devices work together to identify where sounds are coming from. All of these things enable your brain to make sense of sound with less effort. So you enjoy a fuller, more natural soundscape. 14 |

Is CrossFit a good fit for you?

SOME PEOPLE CRAVE IT. Others call it a cult. It has WODs (workout of the day), boxes (CrossFit term for gyms) and a reputation for causing serious injuries. In 2013, the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research reported that 73.5 percent of CrossFit athletes surveyed said they “had sustained an injury that prevented them from working, training or competing.” So is CrossFit a good fit for older adults who want to be more physically active? Experts say it depends on an individuals’ health and previous activity level. It’s wise to consult a physician before starting any new exercise program. Christian Hines, CrossFit instructor, certified personal trainer and national North American Strongman competitor with 10 years of weightlifting expertise, thinks CrossFit is a good option for older adults as long as they have an experienced coach. To make sure a CrossFit workout remains safe, he recommends people check the credentials and experience of the coaches they’ll be working with, because “CrossFit certificates are not exhaustive as far as rehabilitation and real, true exercise science go.” He feels good CrossFit coaches should have additional certificates in personal training, adaptive exercise and sports medicine. Sherrie Roesner, a 50-something Fort Collins CrossFit participant, says the coaches at the box where she does WODs evaluated her for flexibility and stamina before allowing her to work out. They emphasize safety first and modify workouts for individuals as necessary. “I failed PE in high school which made me feel ashamed. I keep going to CrossFit because of the camaraderie and friends I’ve made, the way my body feels better after a workout, and how it’s helped me be able to do things, like hike with my family. I’m now an athlete in progress!”

What’s that scent? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF when you smell fresh-baked bread, rain or a certain cologne? How does the aroma of coffee brewing make you feel? Aromas can elicit strong mental, emotional and even physical reactions in each of us, and that’s the gist behind 16 |

The remedy of Rover IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO decrease your cholesterol or triglyceride levels, lower your blood pressure and feel less lonely, consider getting a pet. A study by the National Institutes of Health reports that, “pets are likely to be medically beneficial to some people’s health.” Tracy Thomas, veterinarian and owner of Elder Pet Care in Fort Collins, has witnessed the power pets play in people’s lives during her 30+ years of veterinary practice. “There’s such a strong connection between seniors and their pets,” she says. “Sometimes, all aging people have are their pets. Pets give them a reason to get up in the morning and eat, and get exercise because they take their dog for a walk. Sometimes people with Alzheimer’s may not respond to people, but they’ll respond to therapy animals. Sometimes they don’t recognize people, but they recognize their pets.” So if you want to invest in your health, perhaps you should invest in a furry friend!

the sudden rise in the use of essential oils to treat many health issues, like insomnia, sinus congestion, headaches, depression and more. The use of oils isn’t new, however, but rather dates back to the ancient Egyptians (like Cleopatra whose use of oils is recorded by historians) and Biblical times (remember the frankincense gifted to Jesus?). Technically speaking, essential oils aren’t really oils. Rather they are “…aromatic, volatile substances or essences extracted from a plant, herb or flower by distillation or expression,” explains Ursula Elmes, an aromatherapist and licensed acupuncturist.

Scientifically, “Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system—the part of the brain that controls emotions,” explains Brent A. Bauer, M.D., Mayo Clinic Department of Internal Medicine’s Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program director. If you decide to use essential oils to treat health issues, make sure they’re certified as pure and of therapeutic grade. Also check with your physician before substituting any complementary or alternative medicinal treatments for prescribed medications.

At the Fort Collins Escape Room, guests can sign up their own group of eight, or be paired with others to form a group. They will then have 60 minutes to attempt to “Escape from the Machine” (www.fortcollinsescaperoom.com, most sessions $24/person). In Loveland, Escape from Q offers two adventures, “The Asylum” and “Area Q.” Guests in groups of two to six will have 60 minutes for their escape attempt (www.escapegromq.com, $24.99/person). Better Balance

Bob Calhoun, PhD Is a Licensed Psychologist and writer in Fort Collins (bob@bobcalhounpsychologist.com)

Emotional intelligence

A GRATEFUL MINDSET IS A FORM of emotional intelligence, an intentional focus of the conscious elder. Major spiritual traditions have long emphasized gratitude as central to spiritual growth and depth. Social scientists and neuroscientists have also weighed in on gratitude and the positive impact a grateful mind and grateful behavior have on one’s wellbeing and one’s motivation to work for positive social change. Jason Marsh, editor of “Greater Good” (greatergood. berkeley.edu, 1/5/16), writes an illuminating article suggesting how gratefulness not only correlates with happiness, but also increases ones positive social connections. “When we practice gratitude, we recognize the many gifts in our lives…gratefulness is a relationship strengthening emotion…it motivates us 24 |

Fifty&Better

to pay it forward…” An Arthur Brooks article, ‘Choose to be Grateful. It will make you Happier’ (New York Times 11/21/15), reports social science research that suggests choosing to be grateful and expressing gratefulness makes one feel better and more grateful and brings out the best in those around us. Eric Barker’s article, “Four rituals that will make you happier” (The Week, 2/28/16), referenced neuroscience research that shows when people focus on what they are grateful for, neurotransmitters are activated, coaxing the brain to process increased levels of serotonin and dopamine. The ritual of asking yourself and others what they are grateful for, even the practice of looking for things for which to be thankful, starts this neurological shift.

Make gratitude a practice YOU MAY ALREADY LEAD WITH daily practices of gratitude to keep you focused on your blessings and the needs of others. But here are some additional daily practice ideas: y Be thankful not just for the big things (family, country, faith, security), but the simple daily gifts. My friend Donna says, “Simple things make me happy. Simple gratefulness is like clean sheets, a roof over my head, a call from a friend.” y S tart your day in meditation, focusing on what you are grateful for, perhaps making a list in your journal. Focus on the life that is as opposed to the life that was or is yet to be. y Make a conscious effort to appreciate the moment and its sacredness. y Express gratitude toward others by sending a couple of emails each day to a friend, relative or a public servant or volunteer you appreciate. y Verbalize appreciation to those people who serve you throughout your day. y S tart a conversation with friends about what you and they are thankful for. y Ask yourself, if this was my last week to live, for what would I be most thankful? y Read Oliver Sacks’ book of essays, Gratitude. y Identify ways to help others who need your support and caring. You get the idea. Finish the journey. Lead with GRATITUDE.

An attitude of gratitude FOR THOSE OF US LIVING BEYOND 50, leaning well into our second half of life, GRATITUDE is a cornerstone of a happy and healthy life. Embracing gratefulness as a core value and making a daily practice of being grateful, is perhaps the most important leading step we take as we become older. Although it is natural to develop a more grateful perspective of life as we age, a time when the longer view allows us to appreciate the road traveled, the lessons learned, years of experiences and relationships, leading with a grateful spirit is still a choice and requires active intention. For the conscious elder, an attitude of gratitude has its benefits. Seeing life through the eyes of gratitude keeps us humble and keeps us from taking too much credit for our station and success in life. We did not get to this point on our own, but by the grace of life itself, and on the shoulders of others who have gone before us and alongside us. A grateful mind keeps us aware of the contributions of the many who made and make it possible for being able to live our life. A grateful spirit does not deny the difficulties of life. We each have experienced personal, community, national and world tragedies. We have often come up short of our expectations. But a grateful spirit can help create a larger perspective to help hold and heal the pain we experience like a light leading us out of darkness. As being grateful softens our pain, it also opens our hearts to be compassionate toward others in pain, in need, and lonely. It softens the heart and keeps our eyes, mind and heart open to the unfinished work, the unending work, of compassion toward others as well as healing our planet.

Diving into

The Third

Age Making the most of the next phase of life Kim Sharpe

What do you want to be when you

grow up? 26 |

Fifty&Better

YES, YOU! If you’re 50 and better, you’re exactly the right age to answer this question. Today’s “seniors” as a whole have far fewer disabilities than did those in the past. They’re healthier and likely to remain so for a longer period of time, according to NAP411.com. (Oh, and by the way, older adults don’t like being called “seniors,” “elderly,” “geriatric” or “golden agers.” Those labels don’t seem right for the Baby Boomers who often are more active than their kids.) So, with many healthy years ahead, it may be time to rethink retirement, and even the years leading up to the time when you can officially begin to collect a pension or social security—the Third Age or as the French call it, Le Troisième Âge. “The Third Age is that time in our lives when children

no longer live at home and when we begin to plan for the next, and probably greatly modified, phase of our work life,” says Eileen Hendee, Aspen Club coordinator. “Many call this phase ‘retirement’ although they will alter their lives as opposed to retire. For most, the First Age was our youth; growing up and going to school. The Second Age involved parenting and working. It was during this phase in our lives when we actively raised our children and built our careers.” Bruce Mondschain, Catalyst Benefits, Inc. president and aging-well consultant, adds, “In the past, the time of retirement was when you’d turn off the lights in the shop. It was an end-of-life conversation.” What does the Third Age look like? That’s up to you!

The possibilities are endless as it’s a time to reinvent yourself. Mondschain says, “Activities should be diversified within five areas: family, friends and relationships; work and wages; life-long learning; civic engagement and volunteerism; and health.” So perhaps your Third Age means going to school to become a Pilates instructor. Maybe it means selling your family home of 20+ years, the majority of your belongings and moving onto a sailboat so you can travel, and live more simply. Or you might want to volunteer your time to help others lead fulfilling lives. Ann Clarke is a NoCo Third Ager who sold her business in 2008 to retire with her husband and become a gardener. But “retirement was not what I had envisioned,” she

says. “My tomato plants were destroyed by hail, the deer ate my corn and the grasshoppers ate my flowers. Even worse, I realized I still burned with the fires to help women be successful in business. So with the encouragement of friends, she founded Colorado Women of Influence a peer support group for high-level business women. To fully take advantage of the Third Age, you may have to overcome some challenges. Mondschain says people will have to be okay with taking risks. “This generation is a bit risk adverse and feels threatened by doing something differently. People also may not know how to go about change. They ask themselves, ‘If I would do that, what would people

28 |

Fifty&Better

think of me?’ And they need to think about how to go about learning something they didn’t know how to do before.” Clarke offers the following reminders which are relevant to making the most of the Third Age time of your life: • You are never too old to start over or try new things. • Don’t worry about how you look when you’re doing something you love. • Something is better than nothing, so get started. The bottom line, according to Mondschain, is: “You stand on the threshold that no other generation has thought about or had to plan for. And like most things in life, you can either be a victim of your circumstances or the captain of your ship.”

Take a minute to explore the variety of physical activities geared toward the active generation in northern Colorado. Yvonne Hanning, class instructor and personal trainer at Fort Collins Senior Center, specializes in senior fitness. She says that a combination of flexibility, balance, and strength training achieves the best outcome in older adults, and allows them to more fully participate in the activities they already enjoy.

BE STRONG AND FLEXIBLE

Maintain strength and independence KATIE HARRIS

“Strength is important because if you maintain strength you maintain your independence,” says Hanning. “But without flexibility, strength won’t help you. And if you feel like you’re losing your balance you make adaptations in the way you move, which is harmful to your body.” What seems like a natural aging process, according to Hanning, can often be the result of a lack of practice. “At this age you need to be really engaging your body,” she says. “If you’re not out there using it you’re going to lose it a lot more quickly than a younger person would.” Hanning says that if she could choose one area of focus for seniors, it would be ankle flexibility. “If you lose the flexibility in your ankles and you fall, you are unable to get your feet back under you to get up. Then you’ve lost all your independence.”

FIND YOUR LEVEL

She recommended a low impact class, such as the Taijifit class that she teaches at the Fort Collins Senior Center, to ease into increased physical activity. Taijifit combines fitness, meditation, and Tai Chi, and is geared for all levels. Hanning says the slow-moving class is a nice way to get started in physical activity. “Almost every class we offer can accommodate a wide range of levels,” says Hanning. “We have people with martial arts backgrounds who come to Taijifit, and people who have never even taken a yoga class.” Local recreation centers, such as Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland, the brand new Foothills Activity Center located in the new Foothills Mall in Fort Collins, and the Greeley Recreation Center feature a wide range of classes and programs designed specifically for the active generation.

IF YOU LOSE THE FLEXIBILITY IN YOUR ANKLES AND YOU FALL, YOU ARE UNABLE TO GET YOUR FEET BACK UNDER YOU TO GET UP.

TAKE YOUR PICK

Traditional aqua fitness classes, which provide strength training, cardio work, and increased flexibility, can be found across all of northern Colorado’s recreation centers. Hybrid aqua classes are also popping up locally, including Water Zumba and Hydro Dance at Chilson Recreation Center. Yoga is an excellent example of exercise that works all three of the key areas Hanning suggests, and the Family FunPlex in Greeley now offers a 50+ Yoga class, focusing on beginner meditation, poses, and breathing. Another fun way to stay in shape is by taking a dance class. Local recreation centers offer everything from square dancing to ballroom dancing to Zumba, so participants can choose their interest and the level of activity that suits them. According to Hanning, it doesn’t matter what activity that you choose as long as you enjoy it and are motivated. “Don’t commit to joining a morning walking group if you know you’re not a morning person,” she says. “If you hate it, you won’t do it.”

MOVE OUTDOORS

Day-outing groups provide an alternative way to get exercise and gain knowledge while enjoying the great outdoors. Fort Collins Recreation offers a senior hiking group for all paces, and Loveland Recreation offers a bicycling art tour for seniors. “Most people after the age of 50 aren’t interested in cross fit or body building,” says Hanning. “They just want to do what they love.” Hanning also adds that it’s important to be realistic about your goals, “People have a tendency to go out on the first day and want to get in shape fast and decide to go for a run. That’s when they end up getting hurt.” A better idea would be to start slow by walking with friends or neighbors and then build up to running, or participate in a Couch to 5K program (www.coolrunning.com). “Be honest with yourself about what kind of shape

you’re in,” she says. “It’s okay to start slow. You have plenty of time to build from there.”

PARTICIPATE AT ANY AGE

On the other hand, according to Hanning, just like there’s no one activity that’s right for everyone, there’s no activity that is contraindicated based on age either. “There are trainers that go around to nursing homes and do strength training circuits and they do amazing jobs. It’s never too late to make an impact on your health,” she says. “If what you really want is to run, run!” Participating in physical activities you enjoy will help boost mood, energy, and stamina, as well as immune strength. “It will help you keep up with your grandkids!” Hanning adds. Try a variety of activities and find what is right for you. You don’t have to go to the gym to keep active. Walking, hiking, biking and running can be done with minimal gear and right from home.

Feel good in your feet for Fall As summer winds down and autumn approaches you might be noticing that your feet are a little worse for the wear. Summer is a time for sandals and fun in the sun, however, it can leave us with a number of troublesome issues such as hard calluses, dry and cracked skin and athlete’s foot infections, not to mention numerous aches and pains from all the flip flops and barefoot walking. Fortunately, there are several easy tips one can use to get those feet back into shape in no time. When feet are exposed to water and moisture for too long, fungal growth can occur. This is often referred to as Athlete’s foot, which is a common problem during the hot summer months when our feet sweat much more and we tend to spend more time at the lake or pool-side. Rather than wear one pair of shoes day in and day out, it is best to rotate through a few pairs. This allows the shoes to fully dry out prior to wearing them again. In addition to this, using a wicking sock can help to draw moisture out and away from the skin. Make sure the spaces between the toes are always dried well and avoid lotion between the toes. Once an infection has developed it is best to contact your podiatrist for a prescription to treat the infection. Failure to treat the infection can lead to other problems, such as toenail infections or break down of the skin that can lead to

cellulitis, a serious bacterial infection that may require antibiotics, hospitalization and/or surgery. While some of us have issues with feet that are too wet, others have the opposite problem and struggle with calloused, dry and cracking skin. Regular use of a foot file or pumice stone can help to reduce the discomfort from painful calluses and an exfoliating scrub can help loosen dry, dead skin. If the skin is beginning to crack, getting the calluses thinned down is a key part of treatment. Once the calluses are taken care of use a thick moisturizing cream or ointment on the affected area and cover with socks or plastic wrap for the night. This will help to hold all that moisture in and your heels should be feeling baby smooth within a week. If this fails to do the trick reach out to your podiatrist as there are many excellent prescription creams available for this very purpose. Lastly, don’t forget to stay hydrated! One of the greatest pleasures of summer, in my opinion, is walking barefoot in sand at the beach or through some nice cool grass. However, this can certainly take its toll on the skin of the foot as previously discussed. In addition to this, frequent barefoot walking or wearing flip flops and strappy sandals through the summer months can contribute to several forms of overuse injuries. These include such bad actors as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis and stress fractures. Naturally, the best solution is prevention. Begin the summer months by wearing more supportive sandals. Many of the hiking style sandals are very well constructed and are designed to allow for hours of use on uneven and varied terrain. This would be my first recommendation. If hiking sandals aren’t for you, fortunately there are many companies that are making dress-style sandals with good arch support as well. If the damage is already done and you are experiencing foot, ankle or leg pain, it is time to seek professional help. With guidance and education through your podiatrist we can often speed recovery significantly so that you can get out there and keep enjoying the turning of the season… Welcome Autumn! Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland and Fort Collins, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. Currently accepting new patients. Dr. Kate also now seeing patients in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

An open heart When helping others gets in your blood Kim Sharpe

“The medical profession is a helping profession, and after I retired I knew I couldn’t just stop working with people.”

WHEN YOU SPEND 32 YEARS as a phlebotomist, helping people gets in your blood. That’s why Phyllis Dunn began volunteering with the American Red Cross (ARC) after she retired 10 years ago at the ripe young age of 55, which she admits was an amazing thing to be able to do. “The medical profession is a helping profession, and after I retired I knew I couldn’t just stop working with people,” she says. Because of her love of serving others, Dunn envisioned herself continuing to draw blood through ARC’s blood donation program, available through ARC in California where she lived for several years, but not in Colorado, the place she now calls “home.” Rather than let that deter her, however, Dunn explored other job options at ARC and decided coordinating the Centennial Chapter’s Disaster Response Team (DAT) sounded like fun. In her DAT coordinator role, Dunn trains other volunteers to work with people in crisis. She teaches them how to offer a listening ear and warm

hand to hold, connect them to the resources they need immediately and more long term, and complete associated reports. Beyond training others to do so, Dunn gets in on the action, too. “It’s a 24/7 job,” she explains. As a DAT member, she often gets called out in the middle of the night, like when there are house fires. She’s also been deployed three times to other states to help staff evacuation shelters for tornado and hurricane victims. “It’s so heartwarming to be there for others in their time of need,” Dunn says. “When you show up in the middle of the night, people often say, ‘Why are you here? I don’t even know you!’ They often break down in tears and just need a hug. I’m so happy to be able to help them.” Dunn encourages everyone to find a way to give of their time and talents to help others. “There’s so much need,” she says. “If you try one thing and don’t like it, try something else. You’ll find something you’ll like doing.” And chances are, helping others will get in your blood, too.
