Wholesome, charitable views... Maintaining an open mind and an adventurous spirit

WE PICKED UP THE participants at the airport in Loreto on the east coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, and loaded them into a school bus. We crossed the baking peninsula as we headed for the whale lagoons north of Magdalena Bay on the west coast. I was 35 at the time and had signed on to help staff a couple of Elderhostel trips. We had set up camp the week before on a long, narrow barrier sand island. The main attraction for the trip was the gray whales that calved in the protected waters between the island and the mainland. Camp consisted of 2-person pup tents with sleeping bags and foam pads, a cook tent, a library tent, and a latrine that we dug in the sand. I wondered how well these Elders would fare in these Spartan, exposed conditions. After all, they could have chosen a tamer vacation that included a real bed and running water. I was in for a surprise. In early evening we arrived at the lagoon where small open boats called pangas awaited us on the beach. The people hopped out of the bus, grabbed their gear and climbed aboard. We zipped along at near full throttle in the gathering dusk to camp where dinner was being prepared. Everyone looked excited. No whining or hesitation. I thought, yeah but wait until they see their accommodations and bathroom (or lack thereof ) facilities. But again, they were psyched. This was exactly the adventure they seemed be wanting. The next days were spent exploring the lagoon, observing mama whales and their babies lolling around in the calm waters. Evenings included lectures and discussions in the library tent. At night coyotes would line the hilltops around us and howl. And each group was the same...folks from 50 to 75 arrived at this isolated corner of the world to live for a week in primitive conditions. And they were fun and interesting and curious and I began to think that growing older might not be so horrible. Fast forward 20 years...and now I am that Elder! Elderhostel is now called Roads Scholar, and judging by the catalog, there continues to be plenty of interest in educational and service-learning trips...maybe more than ever. It’s a big ol’ goofy world out there, and we can choose to go one of two ways. We can withdraw into our cocoons where everything is safe and predictable. Or we can maintain (or develop) an open mind and a sense of adventure. We can use our time to be curious and engaged or we can learn to fear everything and everyone that doesn’t fit our constricting view. Mark Twain certainly said it better than I: Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime. In this issue of Fifty & Better, we feature a whole line up of events and activities in our area and greater region that you can dive into. We also explore volunteer and educational vacations as an option that might help you to create your spectacular journey. I hope to see you out there, Scott

Colorado gardening a challenge COLORADO CLIMATES REQUIRE special plants conducive to our mountains, high plains and shorter growing season. Most Colorado garden experts suggest waiting until after Mother’s Day to plant annuals. Search for plants hardy enough for zones 2-4. Visit the Denver Botanical Gardens, Gardens at Spring Creek, or 12 |

Fifty&Better

the CSU test gardens for ideas. Plan a garden by color, size, and space. For continuous bloom, start with tulips, daffodils, crocus, iris, and grape hyacinth, among others or pansies in pots, which withstand a late snowstorm. Set in summer flowering bulbs. Spring perennial plants include such beauties as columbine with lily-of-the-valley,

Bleeding Heart, and lilacs. Check the annual seed packets at your local store and follow directions. Plant cold, hardy vegetables early – lettuce, peas, carrots, spinach, and more. A helpful website is www.coloradogardening.com/todays_ garden.htm. It suggests when to prune and plant by month. Consider a carefree garden that will give you time to play.

Summer décor

Home improvements

AS YOU CHANGE your wardrobe for summer, consider doing the same for your home décor. De-clutter so you have more time to play. Let the light in. Take down the heavy drapes and leave the windows bare or hang sheers. Replace the bed comforter with a lighter fabric and color. Purchase or make a new bed skirt. Change throws on sofas and chairs to cooler fabrics, perhaps even a silk scarf. Put away throw pillows for less fuss. Fill your home with flowers – real if possible or silk, even in bathrooms. Create some sparkle with glass vases rather than ceramic. Arrange tablescapes on accessory or dining tables. Make space on bookshelves to add pictures or flowers. Replace table cloths with bright place mats. Choose white china with colorful accents. Store your winter décor in tightly sealed plastic bins in the basement, attic, or garage. Then relax and have fun.

PLAN HOME IMPROVEMENTS in summer when you can be outside rather than underfoot of workers. Before you begin, do your research and check contractors’ Better Business Bureau status. You can also save yourself time by taking advantage of friends’ and family’s research and recommendations. Planning lots of home improvements? Consider joining Angie’s List at http://www.angieslist.com/ at a cost of $9.99 for a full year that includes tips, names, and reviews. She offers plenty of deals and discounts. This list only rates high-quality contractors. Look under the home improvement section and choose a city or area. Whatever your project, be aware it will probably take longer than suggested. Procure several financial estimates for the desired work before hiring anyone. That said; remember, “You get what you pay for.” Cheap isn’t always best. Never pay up front. Set up a payment schedule with the last check written when the work is finished.

Better Health

Kim Sharpe is a communications professional in the education and health fields. She is also a year-round bicycle commuter and champion of healthy living.

Cheers! WITH OVER 30 BREWERIES, and multiplying wineries, distilleries, meaderies and hard cideries, northern Colorado is full of adult-beverage cheer! While enjoyable in moderate amounts, too much of a good thing can turn bad. Some bodies metabolize alcohol differently as they age; less becomes more. Older adults may not be able to handle their liquor like they could when they were younger. They also may develop an unhealthy relationship with their nightcap. According to the National Institute on Aging-sponsored Health and Retirement Survey, late onset addiction 16 |

Fifty&Better

to alcohol, medications and illicit drugs are increasing among people 50 and better. “Considering that thousands of boomers turn 61 every hour, and 8 million older adults exhibit substance abuse symptoms, such findings indicate that we can expect older adult addiction to increase at an alarming rate,” says Carol Colleran, CAP, ICADC, nationally renowned speaker, author and addition specialist. The cause? Seems it’s similar to why younger people abuse alcohol—a lack of skills and appropriate ways to deal with what life throws at us, which as we age, could be the loss of

loved ones, failing health and giving up freedoms, like where we live. Nathan Scott, communications director for InnerBalance Health Center in Loveland, says, “Substance abuse is an issue that isn’t limited to age. It’s a daily struggle that can be overcome… there is hope.” If you’re concerned that you or someone you know may have a drinking problem, call your doctor or Connections in Larimer County at 970-2215551, North Range Behavioral Health in Weld County at 970-347-2120 or the statewide crisis line at 844-493-8255 to speak to a professional who can help.

Fun in the Sun

Play it safe

COLORADO’S FAMED 300-plus days of sunshine combined with its Rocky Mountain high elevations and outdoor lifestyle can come at a cost. Residents have some of the highest skin cancer rates in the United States. Even worse, the rates of deaths in Colorado due to melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, have been significantly higher than U.S. rates for several years. How can you prevent skin damage from the sun? Wear broadspectrum, Skin Cancer Foundation recommended sunscreen of at least 15 SPF; slather it on in abundance and often. You also can wear long-sleeved shirts and broad-brimmed hats to help keep the sunshine off your shoulders, face and neck.

ONE MIGHT THINK older adulthood slows people down, but that doesn’t seem true when it comes to having unprotected, promiscuous sex. According to the CDC, seniors are competing with people ages 20-24 years old for increasing rates of sexually transmitted diseases such as Syphilis and Chlamydia. In recent years, those diseases increased by 52 and 31 percent respectively among people 50 and better. Contributing factors to rising STD rates in seniors include group living arrangements, such as retirement communities and assisted-living facilities, multiple partners and lack of condom use. With the risk of pregnancy being null and void, safe sex might seem passé, but it’s never too late to take precautions. Just do it...when you’re going to do it.

Better Living

Bob Calhoun is a Fort Collins Psychologist and occasional writer.

Connecting with others along the way OF THE MANY CHOICES in northern Colorado for entertainment, recreation, the arts, and dining, one thing common among them is the opportunity to connect with the faces and stories of the folks with whom we come in contact …the ushers, the ticket takers, the servers, the park rangers, concession workers, the volunteers, the owners. Everyone has a desire to be seen, affirmed, and known. Get to know these fellow travelers, their names and stories. It will enrich their day as well as your experience. The simplest outing can be a chance to connect…. there’s Dan at the coffee shop, newly married; Sabrina, high school senior at downtown Ace Hardware checkout, working weekends for extra cash; starting the day together with our server, Sarah, 6:30am at the Silver Grill….and on and on. People love to be recognized, called by name, asked about their lives…and willing to share a bit of their story. Connecting with others makes us feel that much better about having attended the event, eaten at the restaurant, visited the museum. Person to person contact enriches the other as it enriches our experience. It’s about relationship and community. It’s about connecting with others on the way to whichever event or activity you choose. It’s about better living.

Spend some time.... Find the Global Village Museum of Arts & Culture at 200 West Mountain in Old Town Fort Collins. The four galleries reflect its mission to “foster and celebrate international connection between northern Colorado and the world through exhibits of folk art, fine arts, and artifacts from around the globe and provide international resources and educational opportunities.” Nancy greets me at the front desk. A friend of one of the founders of the museum, she has been volunteering one day a week for the past year. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-5. globalvillagemuseum.org.

Love Italian?

GREAT ITALIAN FARE along Fort Collins’ College Avenue just got better with the addition of Rare Italian at the southwest corner of Mountain and College. Our server, Megan, graduated from CSU and is contemplating her next step in life, perhaps seeking a master’s degree in social work. Across the street at Bisetti’s Ristorante, Ryan reports moving from Lafayette, Louisiana a year ago. Now having residency, he plans to attend CSU. “Thank y’all for stopping in tonight.” Further south on College Avenue, at Clyde’s Canino’s Italian Restaurant, Teta, with her engaging smile, is often there to seat you at your favorite table.

Hit the trails

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK celebrates its 100th Anniversary, which is a great reason to head to this beautiful park in our “backyard.” Find hiking, seminars, photography opportunities, centennial celebrations and more. Perhaps 100-hiking miles between now and when the snow flies? Surf nps.gov/romo or rockymountainnationalpark.com. 62 or older? Buy your lifetime pass for $20.

My favorite trails are in the southeast corner of the Park up the Wild Basin. Talking with Laura, a volunteer ranger at the Wild Basin ranger station, I learned she is also a home healthcare nurse and had assisted my mother a few years back when Mom was living at the family mountain cabin before she died. The conversation made my day, as it did Laura’s. Perhaps my mother’s day as well.

Vacations

beyond rest & relaxation By Kim Sharpe

“BE THE CHANGE that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Ghandi’s statement might not be one that guides everyone’s vacation planning, but it certainly could be the principle behind those who choose to use coveted paid time off (if you’re still in the workforce) or valuable free time combining travel with service work and learning. MEANINGFUL MISSIONS

Arleen Arnsparger and her husband John Cooper have taken two volunteer vacations through Global Volunteers, a Minnesota-based nonprofit that works at the invitation and under the direction of local leaders in partner communities worldwide. They engage volunteers in local problem solving through respectful, direct community service. Arnsparger cautions, “The term ‘volunteer vacation’ is a bit of a misnomer, because nothing about it is a vacation—they work your butt off !” While volunteering at the Glencree Center for Peace and Reconciliation in County Wicklow, Ireland, they performed manual labor in the form of landscape maintenance, painting and 26 |

cooking. “Our job was to do things that supported the staff ’s work.” On their second volunteer vacation, the couple worked side by side with local educators to teach English to school children on the Greek island of Crete. “On these volunteer vacations, you are part of a team of people, all ages, from all over the country,” Arnsparger explains. “You have a chance to meet

and work with wonderful people—interesting folks who each want to make a difference in some way.” Tom Gregory has taken several volunteer vacations of another sort. Since 2007, he’s traveled six times to Ameya, Nicaragua, as part of mission teams from the Council Tree Covenant Church in Fort Collins. “From the first time my church announced it wanted

to concentrate on Nicaragua, which is the second poorest country in South America, I knew I wanted to use my life experiences to help,” he says. Gregory lived in the Philippines during his high school years and extensively traveled through Mexico “as a hippie” in his early 20s, so he’s familiar with developing countries and cultures. His 32-year career as an electrical engineer prepared him to assist Ameya residents as they researched and built a septic system, and conducted related soil testing. He also set up a computer system for a library, and trained people to use and maintain it. “It’s the adventure and experience of new places and new things that draws me to use my time this way,” Gregory says. “And now I have good friends down there and that’s why I like to go back. Doing good stuff is kind of secondary.”

WORK OR PLAY

Trip organizers and participants agree that when you’re planning to take a break, it’s wise to take stock in what kind of a break you need. Are you worn out and truly need to relax and recharge? Or are you ready to work in another setting and gain new insights about the world? Arnsparger advises, “You must be discerning about when you need a real vacation or when you want to work, because you don’t want to go into a volunteer or educational va-

cation exhausted. You want to bring your best to those.” With careful planning, however, you can get your service and education fix and relaxation. “Following both of our adventures, we added days…to visit other parts of the country,” Arnsparger says. “So, even though the volunteer time is not truly a ‘vacation,’ we did spend time afterwards and on the weekends between the service weeks—time to decompress and experience more of the country we were visiting.”

STAY CALM, LEARN ON

Jane Armstrong plans several of her vacations using a similar philosophy. Through the Road Scholar organization (formerly called Elder Hostel), she’s embarked on five educational adventures that are a “combination of my bucket list—places I’ve always wanted to go—and learning.” Road Scholar offers trips that are very active and high adventure to those which are more refined and explore cultural and artistic centers. Armstrong leans toward the active offerings. She’s enjoyed a golf instruction course in St. George, Utah, that included a side trip to Zion National Park and a lecture about the area’s geological history; a trip to Glacier National Park that including a lot of hiking, plus education about various types of forests and wildlife; and a two-week stay in New Zealand that included a mix of education about that country and hiking, biking, rafting and horseback riding. “I like people who do all the advanced planning and put me on a bus and get me where I need to go,” says Armstrong. “I also like the list of recommended reading I receive in advance of a trip. I always read four or five of the books. It gives me a chance to go deep into the history of an area.”

Volunteer Vacations in Colorado If you’re ready to go and grow, but want to stay closer to home, Colorado has many volunteer vacation opportunities, most of which include enjoying the state’s great outdoors. If you want to build or repair trails, help restore wild lands and work with others interested in living sustainably, check out the following options: • Rocky Mountain Field Institute—enjoy a week-long work trip on Pikes Peak. www.rmfi.org/volunteer-vacation • Shadowcliff—an eco-friendly mountain sanctuary where volunteers perform a variety of tasks for two to three weeks at a time. www.shadowcliff.org/our-story/jobs/ • Volunteer Tourism in Colorado—feel good about volunteering and experience Colorado’s beautiful scenery. www.colorado.com/articles/volunteer-tourismcolorado-trail-repair-organizations • The Colorado Trail—help maintain this 500-mile trail that connects Denver to Durango. www.coloradotrail.org/volunteer.html • Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado—environmental stewardship projects range from urban parks to high 14ers. www.voc.org/volunteer

Get Ready to Show Those Toes SUMMER IS JUST around the corner! It’s the season for hiking, biking, golf and tennis, not to mention backyard barbecues, pool time and vacations. All winter long your feet have been hidden away in boots and (admit it) just a bit neglected. However, as warm weather arrives, it’s a good idea to give your feet a little extra TLC. Break out the flip-flops and sandals. We’ve created a list of steps you can follow to get your feet ready for summer. • Enjoy a good soak. Fill a bowl with warm water and place your feet in it for 10 to 20 minutes. Scented oils or Epsom salts can be added to the water if desired, however, warm water by itself is enough to soften and smooth your skin. • Exfoliate. During the winter months feet tend to dry out and skin can become flaky and callused. It’s helpful to exfoliate your feet regularly. A great way to do this is with a sugar scrub, foot file or pumice stone. Gently smooth away any dead skin or calluses. • Moisturize Daily. Use a heavy moisturizing cream

daily. Creams that have Urea will be most effective in combating those thick callused heels that tend to crack. For unusually dry skin, slip on a pair of socks after applying the cream to help increase absorption. • Keep Nails Trimmed. A polished pedicure looks and feels great! Keep in mind, salon pedicures are meant only for aesthetics and should not substitute for a visit to your podiatrist. A salon technician should never shave corns and calluses, and ingrown toenails need to be treated by a podiatrist to avoid infection and recurrence. • Beware of Fungal Infections. Athlete’s foot and toenail fungus can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. See your podiatrist if you have thick, discolored nails or skin that appears dry, scaly, rash-like or itches. Fungal infections can worsen over time and spread, so the sooner treatment begins the better. • Keep Sweat and Odor Away. Moisture in shoes can expose you to fungal and bacterial infections. Rotating your shoes allows them to air out and dry completely between use. For excessively sweaty feet, an over the counter antiperspirant with aluminum chloride can be used daily on the skin. • Slow and Steady. A sudden increase in activity and change in shoe gear can subject feet to overuse injuries. Gradually increase physical activity and stagger your light weight shoes and sandals with more supportive shoes. This allows the feet to acclimate, thereby avoiding problems of heel pain, tendinitis, cramps, sprains and fractures. • Be Foot Smart. If you have diabetes, neuropathy or poor circulation, consult with your podiatrist to discuss any special precautions you might need to take to get your feet ready for summer. For all of your foot and ankle related healthcare needs feel free to contact our office for an appointment. Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland and Fort Collins, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. Currently accepting new patients.

New lens technology helps correct a basic problem experienced by those with macular degeneration.

R

ecently developed new E-Scoop lenses from Holland now enable doctors to help patients with one of the chief complaints associated with macular degeneration—cloudy vision. Dr. Stamm, a low vision optometrist servicing Nebraska and the Greater Denver area, and is a member of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS), offers new hope and vision. “Macular degeneration not only causes central blind spots but reduces clarity,” says Dr. Stamm. “Most of my patients ask me for clearer vision.” Glasses that use the new technology bridge the gap between standard eyeglasses and spectacle head-borne telescopes. Whether your difficulty is night driving, bright light, sunlight or simply seeing clearly into the distance, the E-Scoop lens placed over a standard eyeglass prescription can help. By combining six different optical properties into a two-lens system, vision can often be enhanced. “We start with the patient’s prescription and then add prism to move the image to a healthy seeing part of the macula,” said Dr. Stamm.

• The lens has five distinct features that make vision clearer and sharper, with reduced glare: • The prism moves the image away from the damaged macular area. • The low vision prescription ensures that patients’ needs are met. • The yellow tint improves contrast. • The thickness of the lens, combined with the special “base” curve, makes objects appear slightly larger. • The anti-reflection coating allows more light through the lens. E-Scoop lenses provide some magnification by using a combination of special lens curvature and thickness. The lenses also incorporate a custom yellow filter and anti-reflective coatings. Dr. Stamm reports, “This is an example of two lenses definitely being better than one.” MACULAR DEGENERATION Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness and reading impairment in the country. Individuals with Macular Degeneration have difficulty seeing well enough to do activities

that require fine detail vision like reading, driving, recognizing faces, and watching television. E-Scoop lenses can help vision by improving clarity for some people. “These lenses cannot make vision perfect, but they do make things better,” said Dr. Stamm. “They also assist with night driving and glare reduction.” ABOUT DR. STAMM Dr. Robert Stamm received his bachelor›s degree in biology from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry where he specialized in retinal disease, contact lens fittings, and low vision.

Horses connect hearts WHEN IT COMES TO helping others, northern Colorado resident Linda Strauss doesn’t horse around. She worked as a registered nurse for 38 years at both McKee Medical Center in Loveland and Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. In the early 2000s and her mid-50s, Linda went back to school—to CSU—and graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies “just for fun.” All the while, when Linda wasn’t helping people in healthcare settings, she volunteered for a variety of organizations that “grabbed her heart,” like the Windsor Respite Care, Thompson School District’s Preschool Program and Larimer County Department of Human Services. But her most beloved volunteer experiences for the past 12 years have been through Hearts & Horses, a nonprofit, therapeutic riding center for people of many ages and abilities. Linda is one of about 1,500 volunteers who annually devote time 62 |

Fifty&Better

helping Hearts & Horses clients. Jan Pollema, Hearts & Horses executive director, says, “Our volunteers are simply amazing! So much of our programs and operations happen because of our volunteers. Without these dedicated individuals, Hearts & Horses simply would not exist.” Hearts & Horses helps children and adults with physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs, and encourages at-risk youth to explore emotions and behaviors while in a secure environment of learning and self discovery. The organization also provides therapy for wounded service personnel and veterans, and assists adults and seniors facing the challenges of aging, memory loss, and age- or injuryrelated cognitive impairments. Volunteers can serve in multiple ways, like working in the barn, handling horses, walking alongside horses during classes and acting as camp counselors during the summer. Linda says she prefers sidewalking because “I love being involved with a student. It’s

Kim Sharpe

so rewarding to see the tremendous changes that take place and to see the pure joy on their faces.” The opportunity to work with horses also attracted Linda to volunteer with this organization. “I used to own horses,” she explains. “They are such amazing animals. The ones at Hearts & Horses are very well trained, and evaluated for calmness and patience. The connection that’s built between riders and horses is so special. It empowers people and can be a life-changing experience.” All of her volunteer work has ingrained a sense of gratitude in Linda. “I don’t take anything for granted. I’m fortunate to be healthy. My son is healthy. And no matter what obstacles we face in life, we can come through them.” One of Linda’s Hearts & Horses students, who began her riding therapy with little to no verbal skills, graduated from the course by being able to tell her horse to “Walk on!” And so should we.
