Am I right?

Seeing the world how we are

I HAVE TWO THINGS TAPED TO MY DESK as reminders. The first one is a yellow sticky note that says “Am I right?” and below that it says, “Am I sure?” just in case I didn’t get the point from the first question. I tend to think that I’m right and that my opinion, point of view, way of looking at the world or simply the right answer to a specific question is correct and should not be argued with.

I used to be worse though. Just ask Kristin, my wife. The more I felt resistance to my view or opinion, the more I dug in and the more I could make it personal. I’m still not a model of open-mindedness, but I have come to realize that my opinion is just my opinion and not the law laid down by whomever or whatever lays down those laws. Of course, in the heat of the moment, I don’t always heed my own advice, but I’m quicker recognize it.

I think it’s human nature for us to retreat into what we know and feel comfortable with. All those other ideas and ways of being in the world threaten our security about how the world works, and what matters and why it matters.

The other thing taped to my desk is something I cut out titled 10 to Zen from Music for the Soul. It goes like this:

10 to Zen

1. Let go of comparing

2. Let go of competing

3. Let go of judgments

4. Let go of anger

5. Let go of regrets

6. Let go of worrying

7. Let go of blame

8. Let go of guilt

9. Let go of fear

10. Have a proper belly laugh at least once a day (Especially if it’s at your inability to let go of any of the above.)

I find that one of these is applicable to me at just about any moment of any day. Zen asks us to open our minds and hearts to see the world outside as it is, not as we are. It asks us let go of our attachments and to stop splitting the world into things we like, things we dislike and things that we just don’t care about, and to see our connection to everyone and the rest of the whole shebang.

The problem isn’t the ice cream. It’s my attachment (craving) to that ice cream, as they say.

I don’t believe that we are as polarized as we might be told, and I think that we can in many circumstances ask ourselves, “Am I right? Am I sure?” and then let go of as much as we can.

And then remember that love is always the right answer and laughter is the best medicine.

Spruce up with Spring cleaning

GET A HEAD START ON SPRING

CLEANING. Take it slow. Follow these general tips and add your own ideas for your home.

• Make a plan – tackle one room at a time. Take a break before tackling another room.

• Work from ceiling to floors – fixtures, fan, walls, windows, drapes, furniture, baseboards, carpet/hardwood/rugs, air vents. Declutter drawers and closets.

• Set a tone – change dark and heavy to light and fresh. Add colorful pillows or art, consider seasonal bedding, towels, table linens, and window treatments.

• Think green – substitute chemical cleaners with steam cleaning or white vinegar mixed with baking soda and water.

Reminders by room:

• Kitchen – wipe out fridge, cabinet tops and doors, shelves and pantry. Discard out-ofdate supplies.

• Bathroom – sanitize all surfaces, replace or wash the shower curtain.

• Bedrooms – air out or dryclean comforters, launder blankets, spray mattress with sanitizer and wash, sanitize or replace pillows.

• Office – organize/discard.

Garden: make a plan

MOST GARDEN FAILURES RESULT from the lack of a plan or garden layout. Search the internet for planner books or free, downloadable, interactive software. If planting vegetables, the most basic garden consists of a full-sun location with straight rows running north to south, which prevents shading. Plant tall vegetables in the back, medium height in the middle and smaller in the front.

If limited space, consider containers on the patio, driveway, balcony or rooftop. Save on soil and control weight by filling half of a deep container with leaves, tree branches, bunched up paper/cardboard, Styrofoam, plastic, pinecones, wood chips or mulch. Whether vegetables or flowers, grow tall plants in the middle and surround with mid-sized then smallest along the edge.

For flower inground gardens, plant near a water source and think large masses of flower varieties. Learn light, water requirements and group accordingly.

If you are really serious, check out Colorado gardening books such as The Colorado Gardener’s Companion.

Light up for a cozy space

FOUR TYPES OF LIGHTING affect mood, emotion and well-being if layered throughout a room.

• Overhead/general – illuminates a large area, preferably controlled by dimmers. Choose from pendants, chandeliers, recessed, track or flush/ semi-flush.

• Accent – highlights a particular object or area.

• Ambient – offers indirect lighting, either natural or artificial.

• Task – works as direct lighting for reading, writing, cooking, sewing or other intricate work. Choosing lightbulbs can be confusing. Each has its own use. Do you need bright or warm white? Cold, intense, direct white lights work best in big, open spaces – kitchen, bathroom and garage. Warm, white lights fill most other needs.

• Incandescent – portable lighting such as decorative table lamps.

• Compact fluorescent (CFL) – residential shadow-free lighting in sconces, ceiling lights and table lamps.

• Halogen – undercabinet and work lighting.

• Light-emitting diode (LED) – energy efficient which replaces most types of lighting needs, including fluorescent, compact fluorescent and incandescent.

THE PICKLEBALL BOOM is real. More than 36.5 million people played pickleball from August 2021 to August 2022. Pickleball, often described as a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton, has traditionally trended toward the older crowd. In fact, half of all serious pickleball players (those who play eight or more times a year) in 2021 were 55 and older. But younger people are becoming hooked, lately, too.

Pickle Ball

Besides being easier to learn than tennis, pickleball is also slower paced and there’s less ground to cover; you could almost fit four pickleball courts onto one tennis court, and most picklers play doubles. Some research suggests that it may be safer than tennis for people with heart issues, too.

Biking for health

NEARLY 30 PERCENT of new bicycle riders in recent years have been seniors and the benefits of bike riding for them are plentiful. Foremost, it is a low impact, low-stress exercise. When you cycle, you move in smooth motions that don’t put any undue stress on your body. Some commonly recommended exercises for seniors, such as jogging, for example, are high impact and over time they damage different parts of the body. As you jog you put a lot of strain on your knees and your ankles as well as your feet. When you cycle, the circular movements that propel you forward don’t strain the body in any way.

Cycling is also great for your heart. Stroke, heart disease, and heart attacks are the most common cause of death for seniors. Cycling is a great way to keep these chronic ailments at bay. Riding a bicycle is a great way to increase your heart’s capacity.Biking for seniors is great for those worried about memory loss, or more chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. When you cycle, your body works at maximum capacity, ensuring that the brain is fully oxygenated which stimulates the part of your brain that’s responsible for memory, the hippocampus. Cycling is recommended for people who want to stave off memory-related illnesses as well as those in the early stages.

The range of Neuropathy

NEUROPATHY CAN RESULT from a wide range of conditions such as diabetes and even treatments like chemotherapy. It happens when a nerve or group of nerves does not function normally. Neuropathy can have many different causes, including diabetes, trauma, nerve injury, illness, or medications. The symptoms typically depend on the cause, and which nerves are involved.

In fact, neuropathy, which is sometimes referred to as peripheral neuropathy, is not a single health condition but rather a term used to describe a range of health problems involving damage to the peripheral nerves, as well as the symptoms of those issues.

While the group of conditions is irreversible, you can take steps to help prevent neuropathy or manage it through diet, lifestyle, and treatment. Lifestyle choices can play a role in preventing peripheral neuropathy. You can lessen your risk for many of these conditions by avoiding alcohol, correcting vitamin deficiencies, eating a healthy diet, losing weight, avoiding toxins, and exercising regularly.

Ease into Spring with These TCM-Based Wellness Tips

Colorado sure has seen a cold and snowy winter season; but March is here and that means warm weather is just around the corner! The Vernal Equinox, which marks the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, falls on March 20th.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is governed by the Wood element which embodies the energy of birth and new beginnings. As the trees begin to bud and the flowers start to bloom, many of us recognize a similar feeling of subtle expansion within our own bodies. In TCM, humans are not seen as separate from nature, but rather as an integral part of it. Therefore, as the seasons change, our lifestyles should also reflect that.

Here are a few tips for supporting your body during the transition:

• Eat your greens: Each season is associated with a color, and green is the color of Spring! This is a

good time to start incorporating leafy greens and other fresh produce into your diet. In general, foods that are lighter and cooler in nature are beneficial as we head into the warmer months. It is also helpful to reduce the intake of things that burden the Liver, such as alcohol and fatty or fried foods.

• Gently move and stretch your body: Inviting movement into your body through activities like walking, yoga, or Tai Chi is great for circulating the Qi and keeping the tendons healthy.

• Practice diaphragmatic breathing: Breathing is one of the best ways to cleanse the body of toxins. Take a few moments to practice inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, allowing the ribcage and belly to rise and fall.

• Get some sunshine: As the days grow longer, it is the perfect time to get outside and soak up some

sun! Natural sunlight is important for maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm, and it helps our body create Vitamin D, which has several health benefits, such as strengthening the immune system and boosting the mood.

• Find healthy ways to release emotions: Try journaling, talking to friends, creating art, or whatever else allows you to express yourself and move through your feelings.

• And last but certainly not least… schedule yourself for some acupuncture! Whether you are looking for general support through the change of the season, or you have a more specific health concern, our team of practitioners at Traditional Chinese Medical Clinic in Fort Collins, CO, can help.

Take it outside

Get social and active in the great outdoors

AS

WARMER WEATHER

BEGINS TO tempt us out of hibernation, many of us have the same three things on our minds— getting back outdoors, getting back in shape, and getting back to old friends (maybe even making some new ones while we’re at it!).

Whether it’s working off the winter weight and exploring local terrain on a guided hike, meeting fitness goals while diving deeper into a favorite sport or meeting new friends with similar interests in a hobby club, the Northern Colorado region is home to limitless

opportunities to be active and social in the great outdoors!

TAKE A GUIDED WALK OR HIKE

For the hiking enthusiast, Fort Collins’ Building on Outdoor Trail Stewardship (B.O.O.T.S.) program offers weekly hikes led by certified instructors. All hikes are local, and difficulty levels range from easy to moderate. Upcoming trails include Riverbend Ponds, Devil’s Backbone and Bobcat Ridge, among others. In addition to enjoying exercise and socialization, hikers will learn about the principles of Leave No Trace

and explore native flora and fauna. A one-time $65 membership fee is required for the spring session. For more information and to register visit the Fort Collins Recreator at www.fcgov.com/recreator/.

If a light walk is more your stride, Loveland Parks and Recreation offers a range of volunteer-led walks from spring to fall at local destinations. Themes range from plants to birds, history to geology, and take place at sites such as Chapungu Sculpture Park and Morey Wildlife Reserve. Think you might be up to leading a walk

22 | Fifty&Better

yourself? Volunteers are always welcome and there are few jobs more rewarding! Visit offero.cityofloveland.org for a calendar of upcoming walks, as well as information on upcoming volunteer training sessions.

PARTICIPATE IN AN ALL-LEVEL SPORTS LEAGUE

Pickleball leagues have taken off across Northern Colorado in recent years, with participants of every skill level joining in. In Windsor, the volunteer-run Windsor Pickleball Club reserves court time beginning in May for beginner to advanced players to engage in a friendly game or two. Email windsorpickleballclub@outlook.com for

additional information.

Just about every golf course in the region hosts golf leagues for men, women and couples to get out on the green. Thanks to golf’s handicap system, players of all skill levels can compete against each other while competing against their own average score, creating opportunities to meet everyone else in the league while improving your golf stroke at the same time. Contact your local golf course for league information.

The Greeley club meets at the City of Greeley Forestry Department on the third

Wednesday of each month at 9am, while the Loveland club meets at All Saints Episcopal Church on the third Wednesday of the month at 10am. Contact Pam Dorsett at 303807-4933 for details on the Greeley club or contact Ellen Fernandez at 512-876-9025 for information on the Loveland club.

For general details about

the organization visit https:// coloradogardenclubs.org/garden-clubs/.

The Loveland Fishing Club’s website states, “Our basic purpose is to fish, but we’re easily distracted by the chance to work with youngsters or improve northern Colorado outdoor resources,” and that says it all! The club meets monthly at the Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland, plans

regular fishing outings, hosts seminars and clinics, and assists local agencies with fishing programs. From fly fishing to ice fishing, the group does it all, when they’re not busy volunteering at local fishing events. Interested in joining? This nonprofit club is dedicated to nature appreciation, conservation, education and restoration, with a focus on birds and other wildlife. A $20 annual membership helps fund programs, activities and publications for the Fort Collins chapter, but even

non-members are welcome to join in on the organizations frequent field trips to places like Red Fox Ridge, the Pawnee Grasslands and Fossil Creek Reservoir, and to attend presentations on topics such as Northern Saw-whet Owls and Bird Photography 101. Giving Back

Bookstore fulfills dream

ELLEN SHEPHERD’S POSITION

AS A National Bank Examiner for 34-plus years left little time for volunteering. “When I retired, I missed being productive and valued. I needed a routine and a reason to leave my beautiful home near Devil’s Backbone.”

Originally from Nebraska, Ellen and her husband have lived in Colorado for 20 years, 10 in Loveland. Her 94-yearold mother lives with them. She mothers two grown stepsons, connects with many nieces and nephews and claims all of their children as her grandchildren.

Ellen volunteers for her church in various roles including some bookkeeping. However, her passion is the Loveland Library where she first served on the Friends of the Library’s board and prepared the member newsletter. Through Ellen’s work experience, she learned to manage people, deal with the public and organize – skills which come in handy for her current position as volunteer coordinator for the Friends of the Library Chapter Two Bookstore.

“I’m a life-long avid reader so the bookstore is a dream volunteer position!” Ellen serves a four-hour shift at the bookstore each Friday 9-1 and volunteers in various capacities for the large book sales held at The Ranch every April and October. For her the bookstore is fun. She works on a few administrative duties and interacts with the community through their shared love of reading. “I always say my shift in the bookstore is like having a book club each week – I never tire of talking about books!”

She also trains, schedules and communicates with 25 regular and substitute bookstore volunteers. And, maintains contact with the 25 people

wait-listed! She loves working with dedicated volunteers and getting to know the library staff, who, like her, want to help the library serve the community.

One volunteer related how she appreciates the instruction binder Ellen compiled, and how approachable she is when a problem occurs.

Ellen appreciates the volunteers who commit time to sort, choose, stock and price the used books for the store. “Many of the books are in like-new condition and all are offered at great prices.”

Rather than claim the credit for the bookstore’s success, Ellen says, “It takes

a village to accomplish what we do.” The bookstore, located on the right just inside the library entrance, is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday. Since volunteers staff the store, all proceeds directly benefit the library. In 2022, Ellen says, “We raised almost $30,000 in the store to support library programming for adults, teens, children and the technology center.”

Ellen Shepherd satisfies her passion and contributes her talents.

“I’ve been very fortunate in life,” she claims, “so I appreciate the opportunity to ‘give back.’”
