From the Publisher

What we put in the tank Knowing versus doing what’s good for us

EATING AND DRINKING ARE HARD. I don’t mean the actual act of putting something in our mouths, chewing (if required) and then swallowing. We’re pretty good at that by now…maybe too good, in fact. What I mean is that we tend have a reasonable idea of what makes us feel good, in both the long-term and the short-, but we’re not always so good about following our own advice. Case in point: I’m trying to shave off 5 to 10 pounds and get in a little better shape as I aspire to at the beginning of every year. I’m not big on the whole diet thing. Rather, I try to eat and drink less and exercise a little more. I’m pretty good on the exercise part but the eating and drinking part is the challenge. I can decide in the morning that I’m going to pay attention and not put anything in my mouth that isn’t on the good list…nothing from the naughty list. It’s making the right decision in the moment. For example, we were out for happy hour the other night and I was determined to stick to light, lager beer, and to keep it to two drinks. Well, someone new came and sat with us and for some reason, maybe the added energy, I knew that I needed to order a drinky-drink, like a Manhattan. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. But it wasn’t. I felt bad the next day and I didn’t need the calories. This being human thing makes it hard to eat and drink sensibly! You know what else makes it hard? Bacon. Yeah, that fatty, processed pork that tastes pretty dang good with everything. Had some of that Sunday. It’s not really on the plan either. Then there was the Pad Thai last night. Another thing I’ve noticed is that I don’t get the leeway that I used to. It’s seems that eating one little bowl of ice cream never goes away. It’s like snow on the South Pole. Last year Kristin and I did a 10-day detox diet. That was hard. I did drop a solid 5 pounds and kept it off until Thanksgiving, but that’s another story. As for stories, this issue is packed full of interesting stuff. Kim Sharpe’s story about eating well so that as we age we feel great is what got me thinking as I was writing this column. Bob Calhoun’s nostalgic trip into baseball season reminded me of my own youth baseball memories…moving from Detroit to Nebraska in ’68 at the age of 8. The Tigers won that series and I was the kid from Detroit…and, yes, Al Kaline was still on the roster. Enjoy your spring! Scott

SPRING IS A GOOD TIME to tackle all those nooks and crannies overlooked over the winter. Follow these tips to get a head start on spring cleaning. • Move furniture and vacuum or mop. • W ipe down doors, sills, baseboards and woodwork. Empty shelves and wash with soap and water. Don’t forget the ceiling fans, above the kitchen cabinets and beneath the fridge. • Take down drapes, remove hooks and place drapes in dryer with a damp towel on air cycle for 15 minutes. Hang immediately. • Air out comforters outside and use the old fashioned method of beating with a broom to remove dust. Leave them for at least an hour. Wash blankets and pillows. • Thoroughly vacuum upholstered furniture, cushions and pillows. Wash or shampoo throw rugs. Have carpets cleaned. • Freshen your mattress. Sift baking soda on the surface, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum.

Free admission and parking. Hours: Friday, noon to 5pm; Saturday, 10am-5pm; Sunday, 10am-4pm.

SPRING IS COMING, it really is! Take advantage of Colorado’s beautiful sunny days to prepare your gardens and lawn. • Rake the lawn to remove dead growth and winter debris. • Once the lawn begins to green in late spring, apply the first fertilizer application. • Top dress established gardens with manure/compost. Don’t dig in unless it’s a new garden. • Clear and mulch perennial beds. Spread mulch around sprouts; don’t cover them. • Divide perennials when shoots are only 2-4 inches tall. • Start seeds inside. Plant outside once soil is workable and warm. Cover and protect seedlings from hard frost with anything handy–overturned pots, buckets or cardboard boxes anchored with a rock. • Clean old foliage from bulb beds. Plant forced bulbs–daffodils, lilies, crocus, hyacinth and more. • Prune dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs. • Transplant shrubs before they begin to leaf. Now sit back and wait for the show.

Holistically healthy HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO EXPLORE alternative ways to take care of your body, mind, spirit and our environment? Perhaps you’ll find what you’re looking for by delving into holistic health and living. But what the heck does that mean? Think healing modalities like massage and reflexology, energy re-balancing, iridology and aromatherapy. Or get far out and consider astrology, tarot, palmistry, clairvoyant readings, aura portraits and other intuitive arts. Chemical-free body and home-care products also fit into a holistic lifestyle. On March 24-25, 10am-5pm, at the Larimer County Fairgrounds / The Ranch – South Exhibition Hall in Loveland, you can become wholly immersed in this subject at the Spring Holistic Fair. Another fair will be held in the fall. Visit www.Holistic-Fairs.com for more information.

The C word ALMOST 40 PERCENT of Americans are going to be labeled by the “C” word in their lifetime. “C” stands for cancer. If you don’t personally receive a cancer diagnosis, you most certainly will have a loved one or friend who does. But the good news is, “There are more than 15 ½ million cancer survivors in the United States today, and that number is growing due to scientific advances in medicine and technology,” writes registered oncologist nurse Alene Nitzky in her new book, Navigating the C: A Nurse Charts the Course for Cancer Survivorship Care. Nitzky’s book is a resource for anyone who wants to learn simple steps they can take to

reduce the trauma of a cancer diagnosis for their loved ones or themselves. It offers practical advice about how to be a more active and confident participant in your own healthcare by learning self-care and self-advocacy skills. She says, “Bottom line— you don’t have to navigate a cancer journey alone. There is much more support available than busy healthcare providers know about. They don’t have the time to find out what your everyday needs are. You have to take responsibility to ask for referrals and ask questions yourself. And that’s what my book’s about. It helps people know what they need and what to ask for.”

Now hear this

THE MORE BIRTHDAYS YOU HAVE, the more likely it is you won’t be able to hear people sing while they present you with a cake on fire. What? According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders, about 8.5 percent of adults, ages 55 to 64 have disabling hearing loss. It goes up to 25 percent for people 65 to 74 and 50 percent for people over 75. Susan Baker, a hearing instrument specialist with Advanced Hearing in Fort Collins, says, “Hearing loss occurs over time, but is not necessarily age related. Genetic and hereditary factors, medical conditions, and noise exposure are the most common causes of hearing loss.” Baker also says, “Hearing loss is a direct link to cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, because when your brain doesn’t receive the details of speech with even a mild hearing loss, it puts strain on your brain, leaving you exhausted after communication and sometimes not remembering what was said.” So, what’s sound advice? Ensure you can hear that happy birthday tune for years to come and that you don’t unnecessarily stress your brain by using earplugs or earmuffs around loud noises. If you already have hearing loss, treat it with hearing aids sooner than later.

The Fossil Creek Trail begins at the parking area at Cathy Fromme Prairie on S. Shields St, south of Harmony Rd., and winds northwest along the foothills, offering a moderately strenuous incline into the city where, after 5.17 miles it ends at Spring Canyon Community Park. The park offers another parking area where hikers and bikers can catch the Spring Creek Trail, which travels 6.93 miles northeast though the city, eventually

NuEar Hearing Centers Provides

Premium Hearing Care One of Jeff Davis’ greatest joys is playing a pivotal role in helping people regain their hearing. “It is life-changing when someone can suddenly hear,” says Jeff, owner of NuEar Hearing Centers in Fort Collins and Greeley. Jeff has witnessed amazing transformations — for example: first-time patients who are sad and withdrawn are suddenly elated from recovering the precious sense of hearing. He enjoys seeing how those individuals quickly become more active members of the community, regain lost relationships and just enjoy life more. NuEar Hearing Centers is a family owned clinic that opened in September 2015. Jeff, owner and Hearing Instrument Specialist, welcomes clients for a complimentary initial visit. He conducts a hearing test and full evaluation to determine the level each individuals hearing loss. “The hearing test and consultation are free of charge,” states Jeff, “this is a community service that we provide because it’s important for people to know the degree of their hearing loss.” Jeff couldn’t be prouder of his family-friendly practice: “We are different from other hearing centers; our atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable and we enjoy

24 |

getting to know our patients on a more personal level.” He looks forward to bringing this same service to the Greeley area, having recently opened a new clinic in that community. While most of Jeff’s patients are older adults, it is important to understand that people of all ages experience hearing loss. “One in five Americans has some type of hearing loss,” he explains. “People between the ages of 65 and 74 have a one in three chance of being diagnosed with hearing loss. And the frustrations of hearing loss don’t just affect one person,” Jeff says, “hearing loss impacts the spouse, family, friends and the overall socialization of any one who struggles to hear. If a patient is diagnosed with a sensorineural hearing loss, a hearing aid for amplification is recommended. All products offered at NuEar are custom fit to the user’s unique loss, and Jeff is highly skilled and experienced in the fitting of custom made and invisible hearing devices. ENJOY CLEAN, UNPROCESSED FOOD AMERICANS LOVE THEIR FOOD and it shows. Not just in the way our bodies are becoming super-sized, but in the myriad chronic health issues we have. From cardiovascular disease to cancer to diabetes to osteoarthritis to chronic kidney disease…the list goes on…overweight and obese individuals are at a higher risk to develop chronic health conditions than their leaner peers.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT As we age, it’s tempting to give up on trying to eat healthfully in exchange for adopting an attitude like, “I’m old. I can eat anything I want. And I can eat as much as I want, too!” While this is one way to approach to food, it may not be the best way if you want to feel your best in the third age (or any age) of your life. A smorgasbord of research proves fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean sources of protein (e.g., fish, nuts and beans) should take up most of the space on your plate; sugar, salt, fat and processed food should be kept to a minimum. Unfortunately, more and more people don’t eat this news up. THE DIET DILEMMA While adults in the U.S. gain weight (nearly 75 percent are either overweight or obese), the diet industry gains profits. Americans spend upwards of $60 billion each year on weight loss programs, products and procedures. Even with that much consumption, we can’t seem to satiate our appetites or come to a conclusion about what constitutes the best diet. Is it the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet, which encourages reducing sodium (salt) and eating fresh produce, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy products? How about the Mediterranean Diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil? How about becoming a vegetarian and eliminating meat and fish from your diet? Or a vegan who takes that a step further and eliminates dairy, too? Or how about a variation of these, like pescitarians (vegetarians who’ll eat fish and seafood) and flexitarians (vegetarians who occasionally will eat a steak or juicy burger when a craving for flesh strikes). Another approach to eating is keeping food raw. Michelle Cerise, a NoCo-based certified raw, plant-based chef and health and

Fifty&Better | 27

life coach, encourages people to eat minimally cooked fruits and vegetables to retain the vitamins and minerals they contain. She says, “Raw food provides the maximum amount of nutrition for your body. It has more nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber than cooked food and is digested easily and quickly.” Cerise feels anyone of any age can make a switch to this type of eating. She says, “The sooner you start eating clean, unprocessed foods, the better you will feel. It is never too late to make a change!” That’s encouraging, but there’s still this nagging questions of which diet is best. Which one is really the right one? KEEP IT SIMPLE Liz Dejongh, registered dietician and CEO of Well Simplified, isn’t a proponent of diets at all. She says knowing what to eat is simple if you listen to your body. “When people let hunger truly set in, they are more likely to crave real foods, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oils—things people have been eating for generations. And real food has the power to satisfy people and their nutritional needs without tempting them to overeat, Dejongh says. “I simply encourage people of every age to listen to their body, let hunger be their guide and love every bite they put in their mouths.” At the end of the day, she weighs in with this: “Health isn’t meant to be about rules and recommendations. It’s about following instinct and intuition, and you are born with both.”

FOR BASEBALL LOVERS who have lived beyond the ‘fifth inning of life,’ the stories we carry of playing and watching the game are endless. Spring marks the start of a new season, with renewed hope for a winning team and the chance to build new memories of America’s pastime. “Get your cold beer here!” shouted Bob the Beer Man like a veteran of the opera…serving section 129, moving with a confidence like those on the field tonight handling sharp grounders and tossing over to first like another day at the office. I know his voice well from years watching games from row 22 where he has faithfully peddled brews to Rockies fans…his Aramark employee button with name and number hanging at an angle on his sweatsoaked shirt this humid summer evening, letting all know who he is if they didn’t already know him by name. My aisle seat offers a clear view as he strides up the steps looking left and right like a shepherd watching over his flock. A hand goes up in section 128 to

32 |

Fifty&Better

Stories from the fifth inning of life my right. “Beer Man!” The fan and Bob negotiate mostly by facial expressions and gestures, Bob finalizing the order by raising two fingers…the transaction completed with the help of row mates passing money back and forth, unless the fan encourages Bob to ‘keep the change’, as was the case tonight. In the off-season, Bob teaches English at the state university a few blocks from the stadium. And if you catch him for a conversation, he will mention the book he is writing about all he knows of the ballpark and the part we each play in this theater production called baseball. Passing my row he offers a glance of recognition even when it’s clear I am not asking for another cold Coors. Tonight’s matchup, an interleague game between the Rockies and the White Sox, reminds me of my grandfather, and how during the summer of ’57 when I was 8 and played second base for the Frogs in the Pee Wee league on the west side of Houston, he called me Nellie Fox after the all-star second baseman who played for Chicago in the 50s. Two rows in front of me on this July evening sits a father with his son and daughter. The son wears his Little League cap and on his left hand a brown leather glove with laces streaming out the back of the web, a glove to better fit an older player. He appears ever alert for a foul ball that might make it over the backstop…a hoped for trophy for his bedroom shelf. And as he periodically pounds his fist into his mitt, he must imagine himself at second base preparing for a ball hit in his direction. “Hey batter, batter!” This little leaguer appears to be about 10, the age I was when Dad moved the family to Detroit and introduced me to my first major league ballpark. Dad, a paint salesman, would often be given the company tickets to the Tigers’ game, box seats four rows behind the visitor’s dugout along the first base line. And the highlights for

Note: Opening Day at Coors Field April 6, 2:10pm Colorado Rockies vs. Atlanta Braves

me were the nights Dad would take me to Tiger Stadium. I remember the steel railing covered with layers of dark green paint separating our box-seat section from the rows behind us, leaving me with a sense of being a special guest for the night. Detroit’s right fielder, Al Kaline, became my hero from that first game I attended in June of ’59, and at the change of innings, I watched Kaline trot across the diamond in front of me on his way to right field where he defended the area of outfield grass below the towering covered third deck bleachers. Most exciting were games against the Yankees when Al’s boys would beat Mickey’s boys, as they were famous for doing in those days. I could see from my seat into the Tiger dugout, and when Detroit was at bat, watched for number ‘6’ to step up to the on-deck circle. “Hey Dad, Kaline is coming to bat!” “Crack!” The hometown crowd erupts with cheers as I am abruptly brought back to the game at hand between the Rockies

and White Sox. The 10-year-old two rows in front jumps with excitement as the Rockies score two runs on a Blackmon double. Bob the Bear Man, squatting on the steps so he wouldn’t block our view, watches momentarily the action on the field, wiping sweat off his brow with his purple kerchief. Arranging beers in his ice chest, he pulls the leather strap over his shoulder, lifts the heavy load and gets back to work, starting up the steps past row 22 looking left and right for thirsty customers. It’s nearing the end of the 7th inning and last-call for beer. “Beer here, last call. Get your cold beer here”, Bob shouts, as we each continue to play our role in this drama of the ageless. Bob Calhoun, Psychologist and writer in Fort Collins. Written for his son who was kind enough to go to Tiger Stadium with him when he was 10 years old and watch a weekend of Tiger games, and for Phil Cousineau, author and fellow Tiger fan.

If you are prone to earwax build-up, consider seeing Susan Baker at Advanced Hearing Services for a checkup and/or routine cleanings. Susan has been helping her patients with their hearing healthcare for over 18 years. Earwax, also referred to as cerumen, is typically produced by our body in healthy normal amounts. The earwax comes from the production of oil from oil glands in our skin. It serves a self-cleaning agent with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties. It is strongly advised to not use a Waterpik or ear candling. Earwax isn’t formed in the deep part of the ear canal near the eardrum. It’s only formed in the outer part of the ear canal. So, when a patient has wax blockage against the eardrum, it is often because he has been probing the ear with such things as cotton-tipped applicators, bobby pins, or twisted napkin corners. These objects only push the wax in deeper. Although, when the wax builds up in our ear canals it can prevent us from hearing. The typical symptoms of wax build-up include: • A feeling of fullness in the ear • Pain in the ear • Difficulty hearing, which may continue to worsen • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus) • A feeling of itchiness in the ear

Patients typically ask if Susan can predict the rate of earwax that an individual will produce. Unfortunately, the answer is no, but there is a way to manage the build-up by using an all organic, natural oil, called Miracell. Miracell will help with other skin issues such as dry skin and itchy ears. Susan Baker is the owner and operator of Advanced Hearing Services in Fort Collins. She has been helping people with hearing loss and tinnitus for the past 18 years. Please call (970) 221-5249 for an appointment today.

Osteoporosis: an ounce of prevention is worth a

pound of cure.

O

steoporosis means “porous bones”. It is the result of the bones losing their density which makes them weak and more likely to break. Approximately one half of women and up to one quarter of men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. The following are a few recommendations to avoid complications due to osteoporosis. 1) Everyone knows it’s important to get enough calcium. Fortunately there are a lot of tasty foods that can help. Some of the best sources for calcium are dark leafy greens, cabbage, okra, broccoli, blackeyed peas, sardine and salmon fish and milk products. 2) Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and for this reason the two go hand in hand. Vitamin D is produced by our bodies when ultraviolet rays from the sun strike our skin. Since UV rays are

a skin-cancer risk, there isn’t an official recommendation for this. Foods that naturally contain vitamin D are fatty fish, mushrooms and egg yolks. The majority of vitamin D in the American diet comes from fortified foods. 3) Exercise is vital for increasing or maintaining bone strength. Any type of weight bearing activity is good—walking, running and even dancing. Strength training is also critical. Don’t forget to ease slowly into any new exercise routine and always keep proper form to avoid injury. If you already have osteoporosis - talk to your doctor first. 4) For those that have been diagnosed with osteoporosis it is very important to protect your feet. Fractures often occur with repetitive trauma due to going barefoot or wearing poorly supportive shoes. Be sure to choose shoes that offer good

support to your feet and ankles. 5) Orthotics can provide additional support to your arches and help to redistribute the load from high pressure areas that are most vulnerable to fracture from everyday stress to the foot. Orthotics can also provide extra stability that may save you from a fall that could break other bones. 6) Unexplained fractures in the foot can be an early indication that you have osteoporosis, or its precursor - osteopenia. Make sure you talk to your podiatrist about the possibility of osteoporosis if a fracture occurs without any major injury. As the common saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Avoid the complications of osteoporosis by taking care of your overall health and the health of your feet early on.

Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland, Fort Collins and Cheyenne, Wyoming, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. The practice is currently accepting new patients.

Last Word

Linda L. Osmundson

Life as a canvas Colorado artist honored during March Woman’s History Month COLORADO’S FIRST resident woman artist, Helen Henderson Chain, nicknamed “Trot” by her family, moved with her husband to Denver in 1871. They opened a bookstore on Larimer Street, published volumes on history and sold art supplies. Helen commandeered a back room for her art studio. There, she exhibited her works and taught classes. Rather than adhere to the accepted women’s art subjects of still life and portraits, she preferred painting landscapes en plein air—outdoors. She and her students traveled into the Rocky Mountains she loved. Dressed in accepted attire of her day (petticoats beneath long skirts, a corset and carrying an art supply pack) Helen, the first woman to do so, summited and painted many of Colorado’s 14,000 foot peaks—Pikes, Grays, Longs, Lincoln and Mount of the Holy Cross. She painted the Mount two years after her friend Thomas Moran. Helen’s love of travel took her to New Mexico via a Pullman railroad car arranged by photographer William Henry Jackson. She painted Indian pueblos. She explored Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Arizona Territory. She was the first woman to paint the Grand Canyon. Another first for women, in 1882 Helen exhibited paintings at New York’s National Academy of Design. But before that, Helen established herself as a humanitarian. After an 1880 anti-Chinese riot in lower downtown Denver, she opened her studio to teach

Chinese immigrants to read, write and speak English. In 1892, Trot and her husband embarked on a two-year round-the-world trip. They spent two weeks in Japan while Helen studied Japanese art. She wrote and painted a long scroll in the Japanese style for Denver’s Fortnightly Club, the oldest women’s literacy club. Thankfully, she mailed the scroll home to the club. Later, the Chains boarded the steamship Bokhara to travel from Shanghai to Hong Kong. In the China Sea, a typhoon sank the ship along with the Chains, 123 other passengers and crew. Helen Henderson Chain is one of the many Colorado women artists who painted and/or sculpted the West and should be honored during March Women’s History Month.
