From the Publisher

Just do it

Otherwise you won’t…and maybe you should I’M NOT SURE WHY but several years ago, I started to like gardening. Outside of a failed garden planted under a big, shady tree when we were first married, I had never had an interest in pretty much any aspect of growing. Then one year it happened. It was inexplicable to me, but I knew I wanted to plant. I’m not sure what drew me to it, but I just accepted it and now I look forward to planting season. I haven’t gone off the deep end, yet, with early starters and exotic vegetables, but I do look forward to the days I can get out and mix in some compost and start plotting out the different areas. And now, I like everything about it. The quiet times watering in the cool, still morning…checking to see if that is a little pepper starting to grow…picking out a weed here and there…and of course making that first salad with early spinach and lettuce. In this issue you will find some gardening ideas in our Better Home department, written by Linda Osmundson. From her list of eleven ways to prepare for the season to where to find gardening lessons on line. You can also check out Katie Harris’ feature story aimed at the novice gardener who just needs a little push, and some ideas, to start gardening this year. The main idea is to keep it manageable so that you love it! What really made me just think about taking up gardening though was not actually thinking about gardening (hmmmm…), but reading Bob Calhoun’s feature about his F150 pickup. Let me explain. Bob talks about as we get older we have time to, as he puts it, “…travel new trails or return to passions put aside long ago.” As he continues, “This time of life presents an opportunity to revive, rediscover and integrate all we are as we dive into these gifted years.” He says a lot of other great stuff, too, in that must-read story that made me think. It seems that it comes down to “Just do it.” (Thank you Nike and others.) You might think, “hey, I’d like to try out sky diving.” And then you think of all the reasons why a person your age shouldn’t being that…I might get hurt. I don’t know anything about it. It might cost a lot. I might not like it. My friends might laugh. I might pee my pants. My sky-diving clothes might make me look fat. The mind can really take off on you when you’re looking into the unknown. One more thing, my wife (and editor of this magazine), Kristin, enrolled last year in a program to train to become a Pilates instructor. She’ll turn 60 this year about the time she should be finishing up the program. She has received universal support for her bold move. It took courage and determination to travel that new trail and put herself out there. But one day she decided that she should “Just do it.” And she hasn’t looked back! Here’s to just doing it, Scott

Eleven ways to jump-start your garden 1 COLORADO GARDENERS SUGGEST the best time to plant is after Mother’s Day. However, follow these tips and get an early start on your garden. 1. Peruse catalogues, order tools and plants. 2. Assess and service lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and other tools. 3. Prune trees, shrubs and roses for healthier growth. 4. T ill 8 inches deep and fertilize with coffee grounds and start a compost pile. 5. P lant bare root shrubs and perennials. Spread Epson Salts around plants to promote growth. 6. Clean bird feeders, baths and deck. 7. To kill weeds, surround them with pinches of table salt. 8. Start seeds indoors – use cooled cooking water from pasta, potatoes, etc. 9. Keep perennials healthy by dividing them before they show signs of growth. 10. Plant hardy annuals. 11. Take a gardening class, or, study at home at sites like coloradogardening.com. Now that everything is ready to go, sit back, and enjoy springtime in the Rockies.

Potted plants as table decor START YOUR GARDENING EARLY by purchasing potted plants and utilizing them as table centerpieces. Here are several ideas. Line a basket with foil. Arrange several (3-5) potted plants inside. Fill in with Easter grass and wrapped candy. Or, substitute enough Spanish moss to hide the pots. Tie a bow on the handle and lay all on a placemat in the table’s center. Place a potted plant on a square of colored foil. Pull the foil up around the pot and tie with burlap, ribbon or raffia. Hide the dirt with Spanish moss. Arrange plants inside a grapevine wreath. Assemble the potted plants with tallest in the center and smaller pots surrounding it. Wrap all the pots together with a wide strip of burlap and finish with a bow. Finally, put small potted plants in tea cups. Add the saucers and set on top of a placemat or tray. Form a circle around the teapot.

Find short video episodes by searching “YouTube Colorado Gardening.” You’ll find programs on everything from container gardens to healthy and abundant Colorado vegetable gardens: www.google.com/ #q=Youtube+Colorado+gardening. Check PBS TV guides for gardening shows. Some come from as far away as Britain and are shared on PBS websites: www.pbs.org/show/garden/. Consider the presented ideas to enhance your landscape. One program from South Carolina, “In the Garden with Bryce Lane,” shares episodes online with topics such as gardening with color, sustainable gardening, private gardens and more. Colorado climate may not be conducive to some of Lane’s plant suggestions but take advantage of his ideas and talk to a local nursery as to which plants would produce the same effects. On a snowy day, stay warm and glean ideas at “Garden Smart” (http://www.gardensmart.tv/). Shows appear on KRMA and online it offers show times, articles, episodes, tips and a newsletter.

Allergy alert HAVE YOU SUDDENLY BEGUN TO SNEEZE, have a runny nose and itchy, watery eyes? Or do you break out in hives when you eat a certain food you’ve enjoyed all your life? The presence of these symptoms could mean you’ve developed an allergy. The good news is the chances of developing environmental airborne sensitivities (like to pollen or pet dander) decreases with age. The same cannot be said of drug and food allergies. James Fulton, allergy immunologist with Allergy Partners of Northern Colorado says, “Similar to a drug allergy, anyone can develop a

new food allergy at any age despite having eaten the food previously without any problems. The most common newly developed food allergies in the adult population include shellfish and fish allergy.” He recommends that anyone who experiences symptoms get a medical evaluation before experimenting with unnecessary treatments and medications. “Though often underappreciated, one of my favorite treatments [for aeroallergens] is a daily nasal saline irrigation which will help remove inhaled triggers in addition to the mucus which is an inflammatory substance.”

caused by cataracts, can often reduce their dependency on glasses,” says the Eye Center of Northern Colorado’s Complex Cataract Surgeon Jason Mayer. “With the implementation of laser technology combined with various options in intraocular lenses, we are able to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.” Other age-related sight issues to be aware of include cataracts that

cloud vision; glaucoma or pressure inside your eye; and a host of retinal problems like macular degeneration, detached retinas, retinal occlusions and macular degeneration. Adam McLaughlin MD, fellowship trained retinal specialist at Eye Center of Northern Colorado says, “Regular eye exams, a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet are the best bets for avoiding these age-related retinal conditions.”

Oh, I see… AS WE AGE, PARTS START WEARING OUT, like knees and hips. However, many people notice their eyes are the first to go. As young as age 40, presbyopia may occur. Basically it means you need reading glasses to clearly see small items or close-up print. Or you may be a candidate for a new procedure that fixes this issue. “We live in an exciting time where patients suffering from poor vision

WHAT BETTER TIME to get a great outdoor workout than while enjoying the beauty of our region at its finest? Rocky Mountain National Park is the prime place for exploring on snowshoes and can usually be counted on for snow at any of the park’s designated trails. Rent a pair, along with poles, on your way into town at Estes Park Mountain Shop (www. estesparkmountainshop.com) for only $5/day. When snow’s on the ground in the lower regions nearby, Lory State Park west of Fort Collins is open for snowshoeing, as is Horsetooth

Mountain Open Space. For local rentals visit Jax Mercantile Co. (www. jaxmercantile.com). Before heading out, dress in warm, moisture-wicking clothing and waterproof snow boots. An extra pair of socks and warm gloves are also recommended. Take plenty of water and don’t forget to drink often. It’s also a good idea to warm up your muscles before heading out on the trails to prevent injury from occurring. Clear your mind and enjoy the sights and sounds of the breath-taking Colorado wilderness!

Visit a local brewery NOTHING TASTES BETTER THAN a locally brewed beer. The big guys—Fort Collins Brewery (Anheuser-Busch), New Belgium Brewing Company and Odell Brewing, all offer tours of their Fort Collins brewing facilities. Fort Collins Brewery (www.budweisertours.com) has tours available seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. New Belgium also offers tours seven days a week, which are available via online reservation at www.newbelgium.com and Odell offers tours by reservation multiple times each day through online reservation at www.odellbrewing.com. Nearly two dozen craft breweries exist in northern Colorado and many also offer free samples to guests. Consider visiting City Star Brewery in Berthoud (www.citystarbrewing.com) for their award winning “Night Watchman” stout, Grimm Brothers in Loveland (www.grimmbrosbrewhouse.com) for their German-inspired beers, High Hops in Windsor (www.highhopsbrewery.com) for their newly released “Uncle Jemima’s Pure Mash Porter,” or Wiley Roots in Greeley (www.wileyroots.com) for their popular “Super 77” wheat next time you’re craving an ale or a lager.

Attend a concert

ENJOY A NIGHT ON THE TOWN with a concert at one of the region’s renowned venues. For a night of country music visit www.lctix.com and purchase tickets to the Fort Collins Lincoln Center, where Clint Black will perform a selection from his more than 50 charted singles on March 24th, and Grammy Award winner Travis Tritt will perform on April 23rd. Cutting the fat

AMERICANS ARE EXPERIENCING a growth spurt. Adults living in the United States are about one inch taller and 25 pounds heavier than their 1960s counterparts, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In its “Best Diets of 2015” report, U.S. News says the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is the Best Diets Overall. Weight Watchers holds the top spot for Best Weight-Loss Diet, followed by a newbie, the Health Management Resources plan. The Mediterranean Diet reigns supreme among PlantBased Diets and ties for third among 24 |

Fifty&Better

Best Diets Overall. What may disappoint Cross-Fit enthusiasts is that the Paleo diet, popular with that crowd, ties with the Dukan plan as the overall lowest ranked diet of 2015. Sarah Morales, a registered dietician and NoCo resident, says, “I would agree that the DASH diet is solid because it emphasizes a plantbased, whole-foods, low-processed foods approach to nutrition. And Weight Watchers, which emphasizes accountability, has been shown to be effective over time. One of the most important keys to an effective way of eating, though, is moderation.”

Never too old for sex

THE GOLDEN YEARS ARE the perfect time to rev up your sex life. The kids aren’t around to interrupt you. Retirement schedules, if done right, leave more time for leisurely between-the-sheets action versus the former 9-to-5 routine. The risk of an unplanned pregnancy is non-existent after menopause. So rev up!

TIPS FOR ENJOYING SEX IN THE GOLDEN YEARS (ADAPTED FROM THE MAYO CLINIC) • Talk about it. It may be difficult if you grew up viewing sex as a taboo subject, but openly talking with your partner about your needs, desires and concerns can improve intimacy. If you have a chronic condition and or take medications that affect your sex life, talk to your doc.

• Expand your definition of sex. Intercourse isn’t the only way to have fulfilling sex. Be open to finding new ways to enjoy sexual contact and intimacy. • Change your routine. Sex isn’t just for the bedroom. (Although discretion is key when exploring new intimacy locales. For example, the produce aisle of the grocery store might be off limits. Just saying!)

Move it MARY HOMAN HAS MOVES and she should. After all, she’s a fitness trainer, wellness coach, licensed massage therapist and the owner of Custom Fit-fitness & Wellness Solutions in Fort Collins. She says, “Life is an adventure; be ready for it. Whatever you can do to keep fit and active gives you the ability to have those adventures, whether it is meeting new people, traveling to amazing places or playing with your grandchildren.” Here are some moves for you: • Walking, hiking or jogging are

some of the easiest ways to get moving. To stave off monotony, vary your route and speed, or take along some hand or ankle weights. • Swimming and water exercise are ways to increase strength, relax sore muscles and increase range of motion. • Bicycling is a great way to move and northern Colorado is becoming one of the best places to do it. There are hundreds of miles of trails and designated bike routes that wind through Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland and Windsor.

• Dancing provides a fun way to get fit. Try turning on some tunes and dancing in your living room or enjoy a traditional dance, like salsa or ballroom. • Stretch your body and your mind with Nia, yoga or Pilates. Nia is a nonimpact form of aerobics that combines dance, and martial and healing arts. Yoga combines mental focus and physical poses to improve strength, flexibility and balance. Pilates teaches movement with focused breathing to achieve flexibility, strength, balance, good posture and relaxation.

Finding new ways of self-expression after fifty and beyond Bob Calhoun

AS WE MOVE INTO OUR FIFTIES, SIXTIES AND BEYOND, we begin to have time to reconnect with who we are, to notice parts within us that are seeking expression and creative outlets…allowing us to travel new trails or return to passions put aside long ago. Parts of ourselves have been exiled within us as being ‘not ok’, or pushed aside due to life’s demands,

or just simply not yet discovered. And a bonus that comes in the second half of life is less of the need to explain, apologize for, or rationalize these emerging ways of self-expression. This time of life presents an opportunity to revive, rediscover…integrate all we are as we dive into these gifted years. In my mid-50s, when my youngest was getting her driver’s license, it made sense in our household to find a used car so each could travel to work or school efficiently. Scanning the Coloradoan classifieds, I came across a white Ford F150 utility pickup truck for sale. The local water district was turning over

their fleet of trucks. Good price, low mileage, nothing fancy…perfect…that is, perfect for Dad. My daughter could drive the Civic. Everybody was happy. I finally had my pickup truck (this was before pickups were put on steroids and required two parking spaces). If I treat it well, this 1 ½-ton truck will last my lifetime. Call it the little kid in me who loved toy trucks, or that part wanting the freedom to throw things in the truck bed and deliver the load, or just a

desire to be a helpful friend, this almost 15-year relationship with my F150 has brought me loads of simple joy. Saturdays took on a new dimension…a load of tree branches to Hageman’s returning with a load of mulch, bags of peat from Jax, a trip to the landfill after a garage clean-out, helping my parents move as they downsized, a trip to Longmont to pick up furniture purchased on craigslist…nothing a little effort and a couple of bungee cords and tarp couldn’t

this almost 15-year relationship with my F150 has brought me loads of simple joy.

handle…and good exercise as well.. What are your F150’s? What parts within you have grabbed your attention as you navigate your fifties and beyond? What parts have yet to find their expression? Perhaps you are well along with discovering new passions and outlets, or revitalizing your talents and pleasures. In any case, there is no magic to this. It may simply be taking the time to listen and pay attention to what speaks to you. …perhaps fly fishing up the Poudre, setting up a woodworking shop, taking piano lessons, gardening, writing, meditation/contemplation practices, genealogy research, being on a board, quilting, running for office, becoming a political activist and taking a stand, volunteering to help make life better for those in need…. discovering the activities and pursuits that truly reflect something about you. And most often it is about ego and fear stepping aside with no need

My F150 and I have had a good run and we have reconnected with some old friends along the way and made a few new ones. 30 |

Fifty&Better

to prove yourself or justify your path of self-expression. Of course, these outlets and expressions can change with time. I have put away the golf clubs, and I spend more time in quiet and in small groups than in the past. I still shoot baskets but have given up the full-court game. I may be finished with committee work. But the key is to find your F150s. On this conscious elder journey, keep living this gift while you have it. Take some risks… loosen up. This is about finding outlets that match your values and sense of self. For me, my F150 has been an outlet for self-care, fun, exercise and self-expression. I have allowed a few bumper stickers and decals on the truck that would not find themselves on our ‘regular’ car. There are layers of political bumper stickers starting with Stan Matsunaka for Congress… representative beers such as ‘Oskar Blue’s

Old Chub Scottish Ale’, ”Trees are the Answer”, a quote from Edward R. Murrow….and a few alma mater emblems… I am reminded of the ‘76 Jeep Cherokee Chief Dad bought after he retired to the mountains from a career as a salesman, a suit-and-tie job back in the day. I understand more now why he bought the Jeep and how he enjoyed loading it up with wood and brush, hauling it to the county sort yard. Wearing jeans and driving his Jeep, a part of Dad emerged I had never seen growing up. That old Jeep is still parked in my back lot. It may now be time to let it go. In these ‘active adult’ years, as one of my good friends refers to them, open up to those parts within you seeking expression and enjoy! My F150 and I have had a good run and we have reconnected with some old friends along the way and made a few new ones. “Hey Bob, can I borrow your truck?” “You bet”.

Gardening 101

Soil, sun, and size

Katie Harris GARDENING CAN BE A REWARDING HOBBY, bringing fresh, healthy produce to the kitchen table, and even helping you save money on groceries. However, for many of us the dry Colorado climate, difficult soil conditions, and general lack of a green thumb make gardening feel like a chore. Tara L. Parr, a volunteer with Fort Collins-based Home Grown Food, spends what little time she has away from her personal garden out in the community, offering advice and assistance to locals who are interested in gardening but don’t know where to start. “Our goal is to promote ecological gardening in the community,” says Parr. “We do this by connecting people with resources that will help them grow food while creating a better place to live.” According to Parr, all it takes is one pot to transform yourself into a gardener. “Anyone can take a pot and plant a seed in it,” she says. “If it’s a tomato plant

you set it somewhere in the sun, and if it’s greens you might put it in the shade. The trick is not to think too big too quickly.” Parr suggests moving up to a small plot, no bigger than 2’x3’ after an initial potting season. To achieve the best results she recommends digging the plot into the ground. “A raised bed is a lot of work, and not necessarily a good idea in such a dry climate,” she says. “Having your garden sunken into the ground a bit helps it hold moisture and protects plants from wind.” Parr says keeping the plot small enough that you can work the whole thing from one place, without repeatedly getting up and moving around is the key to avoiding back pain when working with a sunken bed. She also recommends stretching before getting started, and exercising regularly to prepare the body for the task at hand. The body’s not the only thing that needs a little advanced preparation.

Giving the ground a little TLC before planting is one of the most important steps to a successful growing season. “The key to growing in the ground is really working the soil,” says Parr. “Everything likes to have a good place to grow, so you’ll have the best luck by finding a piece of land with decent soil and then digging in deep.” Compost, which can be created at home by digging a hole, throwing in your kitchen scraps, and stirring regularly, should be added to a garden plot to achieve optimum growing conditions. In addition to achieving a quality soil mix, digging up and eliminating weeds is an important step to take before planting, and is easily performed while working the soil in early spring. However, Parr says the existence of weeds throughout the garden season is less of a problem than people think. “I’ll pull a weed here and there when I’m out working with a plant, but I don’t

Fifty&Better | 33

get very particular about it,” she says. “No matter how many you pull, weeds always come back. Spending a lot of extra time worrying about them is useless.” Parr says using healthy soil and a thick coating of dry leaves around plants is generally enough to combat the problem. Some weeds, such as dandelion could be put to good use—as salad ingredients. When starting out, it’s wise to select plants that are fairly immune to the challenges our climate presents. “Radishes, lettuce and spinach are really easy to grow and so good for you,” says Parr. “They help you realize that what you’re doing isn’t that hard, plus they are great choices to pick and eat straight from the garden.” Basil, onions, leeks, squash and zucchini also made Parr’s list of easy-to-grow veggies. She says cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers were best left to more experienced gardeners. Another route for novices to consider is planting a fruit tree. “Besides providing years of enjoyment, trees have other advantages as well,” says Parr. “While there is a lot of work involved with caring for a tree, you don’t face the bending over and digging that you do with a garden.” Whatever path you take, the most important thing is to have patience and enjoy the process. “A lot of times we get so focused on wanting things to grow that we become obsessed,” says Parr. “Things don’t always work out the way we want them to; whether you forget to water or the ground gets hit by hail, you have to keep in mind that the ground is resilient and be prepared to try again next year.” Parr and the team of volunteers at Home Grown Food are happy to visit aspiring gardeners at home and welcome visitors to their gardens, to discuss ideas and strategies for making them happen. More information on requesting visits, and on upcoming events is available at www.homegrownfoodcolorado.org. “Gardening is meditative; it’s healing and it’s good for your psyche,” says Parr. “The process of watching things grow, and knowing they have the possibility to become food is a reward in itself.” 34 |

Do you have

Natural Hearing?

Natural hearing is what most people are born with. It is when you can hear all the sounds in your environment and can easily separate them. You can understand who you are talking to without having to think about how this happens. Have things changed for you? Hearing loss occurs slowly and you begin to ask people to repeat what they say or become bothered by interfering sounds, like background noise. Sounds and voices around you can become more difficult to hear and localize. Details of speech are missing. Over time, you are working harder to hear and this can become your new normal hearing.

Susan D Baker BC-HIS, Owner Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist

Would you like to get your natural hearing back? What would it be like to have access to all those natural sounds again? I see my patients regain their natural hearing every day and they realize how much of their world they have been missing. Oticon Opn™, the newest hearing technology, provides your brain with more accurate information about the soundscape. You can manage multiple speech and noise sources, even in complex listening situations. You can now focus

on a conversation while staying attentive to people and things around you, being able to switch your focus easily. This technology also improves your ability to understand speech by up to 30%, so you don’t have to work as hard to understand, leaving more mental energy to remember what you hear.

Try it for yourself! Try Oticon Opn TM Risk Free for 30 days and bring back the joy of natural hearing to your everyday life.

“I was able to hear and understand my wife amongst all the sounds around me. I was not bothered by the background sounds, but I knew where everything was spatially. I could then pick out my wife’s voice.” —R.S.

Osteoporosis: an ounce of prevention is worth a

pound of cure.

O

steoporosis means “porous bones”. It is the result of the bones losing their density which makes them weak and more likely to break. Approximately one half of women and up to one quarter of men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. The following are a few recommendations to avoid complications due to osteoporosis. 1) Everyone knows it’s important to get enough calcium. Fortunately there are a lot of tasty foods that can help. Some of the best sources for calcium are dark leafy greens, cabbage, okra, broccoli, blackeyed peas, sardine and salmon fish and milk products. 2) Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and for this reason the two go hand in hand. Vitamin D is produced by our bodies when ultraviolet rays from the sun strike our skin. Since UV rays are

a skin-cancer risk, there isn’t an official recommendation for this. Foods that naturally contain vitamin D are fatty fish, mushrooms and egg yolks. The majority of vitamin D in the American diet comes from fortified foods. 3) Exercise is vital for increasing or maintaining bone strength. Any type of weight bearing activity is good—walking, running and even dancing. Strength training is also critical. Don’t forget to ease slowly into any new exercise routine and always keep proper form to avoid injury. If you already have osteoporosis - talk to your doctor first. 4) For those that have been diagnosed with osteoporosis it is very important to protect your feet. Fractures often occur with repetitive trauma due to going barefoot or wearing poorly supportive shoes. Be sure to choose shoes that offer good

support to your feet and ankles. 5) Orthotics can provide additional support to your arches and help to redistribute the load from high pressure areas that are most vulnerable to fracture from everyday stress to the foot. Orthotics can also provide extra stability that may save you from a fall that could break other bones. 6) Unexplained fractures in the foot can be an early indication that you have osteoporosis, or its precursor - osteopenia. Make sure you talk to your podiatrist about the possibility of osteoporosis if a fracture occurs without any major injury. As the common saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Avoid the complications of osteoporosis by taking care of your overall health and the health of your feet early on.

Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland, Fort Collins and Cheyenne, Wyoming, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. The practice is currently accepting new patients.

TEAM TANDEM: Searching out opportunities to pedal it forward Kim Sharpe

EDWARD AND ROBIN HILDENBRAND SPEND A LOT OF TIME on two wheels, either individually or while riding their tandem bicycle. They cycle for commuting, shopping, exercise and as a mode of transportation for vacations. Bicycles also are a central way they give back to the community.

“We try to support and volunteer for many bike-oriented organizations locally (through the Pedal Club, Safe Routes to School, Helmets for Kids, bicycle rodeos, and the Bicycle Ambassador Program), regionally (through Bicycle Colorado), and nationally (through the League of American Bicyclists and Adventure

Cycling),” says Robin. “We both enjoy teaching people how to ride safely, and being ride leaders for people who want to reintroduce cycling in their life and to those who are interested in becoming a bicyclist.” Robin’s enthusiasm for cycling is especially contagious. She says that one person she encouraged to make it through a beginner bike ride called her a cheerleader and even presented her with a set of pompoms as a thank you gift. While the gratitude is nice, what Robin really loves is seeing the joy in people’s faces as their confidence and endurance increases. Ed enjoys volunteering in the bicycling world, too, but finds his true calling in the wild. Two years ago he

added to his volunteer resume by joining the Larimer County Search and Rescue (LCSAR) team. LCSAR members serve under the authority of the Larimer County Sherriff ’s Office with a mission to “find the lost, rescue the stranded and injured, recover the deceased, and educate the public on wilderness and mountain safety.” After completing the LCSAR’s Basic Search and Rescue Training, which included classroom and field lessons in orienteering, knot tying, basic rope and rescue rigging, search tactics and techniques, and using search and rescue dogs, Ed had to purchase about $1,500 worth of specific gear. “Volunteers pay for all their own equipment, as well as ongoing training,” he says. “It’s a big investment in time and money.” How does he justify that? “Because financially I can, plus I enjoy the outdoors, serving the community and helping others.” The Hildenbrands both feel that we all have knowledge to share; something to contribute. People can serve as much or as little as they want, and they don’t always realize how much joy they’ll get from volunteering until they do it.
