Message from the Mayor

Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Spring / Summer 2016 Recreation Guide: your handbook to this community’s range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Whistler’s municipal programs cater for every age, from infant to senior, and offer programming at venues including Meadow Park Sports Centre, Whistler Public Library, Myrtle Philip Community School, Whistler Secondary School, Spring Creek Community School, Spruce Grove Field House, Lost Lake PassivHaus and Whistler Youth Centre.

New this year, is the Woodland Wanderers for 4 to 5 year olds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is a play-based, outdoor preschool program which encourages children to connect with the natural environment in a physically active way. A second new program offering is the range of basketball programs for grade 2 to 12.

For infants and preschoolers, there are parent and baby fitness classes, swimming classes, preschooler art, sport, science, ballet and musical programs.

For children, there is swimming, dance, cooking classes, musical theatre, and science. During summer break, there are five camps and sports programs. These run at Myrtle Philip Community School and run from July 4 to September 2—just make sure you register early to reserve a spot.

For youths, Whistler’s Youth Centre is a great place to socialize, play pool and table tennis, or skateboard on the mini ramp.

This spring the outdoor Whistler Skate Park will reopen with an exciting series of improvements designed with input from the skate park’s most enthusiastic users: many of them local youths. In addition, young people can enjoy swimming classes, aquatic leadership programs, babysitting courses, and lifeguarding qualifications.

Adults can try drop-in and league sports, weight training, Zumba, yoga, TRX, swimming, skating, pottery, and squash. Seniors can choose weight classes, Zumba, yoga, Nordic walking for bone fitness, and lifestyle programs for a strong heart.

The municipality is committed to delivering a diverse and accessible recreation program at our many facilities and parks. From the Meadow Park Sports Centre hub to our 31 parks, 40 kilometres of Valley Trail and a network of hiking and biking trails, our community is a recreation paradise with something for everyone.

The Canadian Program is offered designed LearnTire to Jumpstart Skate programs for children and youth to participate in sport Sunday, Monday & Thursday and recreation in their community. The program www.whistlerskatingclub.ca provides funding for participation in sport, equipment & uniforms. The two granting periods are spring and fall. Grade 5/10 Program

Programs and Leisure Activities for You (P.L.A.Y.)

Council has approved the continuation of the Grade 5/10 Get Active Program. This program provides a free membership to the Meadow Park Sports Centre for all Whistler Grade 5 and 10 students from October 1, 2016 until September 30, 2017.

Research shows that by allowing youth to make their own social recreational choices they form healthy lifestyle habits that last into adulthood. By offering free admission to Meadow Park Sports Centre more young people are able to participate in recreational activities which will support the trend towards active living while addressing the issue of affordability.

The P.L.A.Y. program provides a service credit to Whistler residents in financial need as determined by the RMOW. The program is designed to allow Whistler residents, who are financially disadvantaged, a credit which is applied to the cost of programs and admission services.

The eligibility of individuals and families into the program is monitored by an outside agency, Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS) to identify those clients in need and validate their applications.

The library is a free place that enriches our community with relationships, resources, and engagement while providing library service that is unique to Whistler.

Flexreg

Cancellations & Refunds Sometimes our programs are cancelled when you wait until the last minute to register. Our programs are cost recovery based and we need a minimum number of participants for each course.

Avoid disappointment - register early. Don’t wait! Programs with insufficient registration will be cancelled one week prior to the start date. Full refunds will be granted. If an individual cancels from a program seven days or more prior to the start of a program, a full refund, less a $20 administration fee, will be granted. No refunds will be issued after this period. In medical cases, refunds are prorated and a doctor’s note is required. Our licensed out of school care and summer camp programs require one month’s notice, example May 31, 2016 for all of July 2016.

MPSC Pool Under 7 Rule Children under the age of 7 must be within arm’s reach of an adult (16 years +) in the water and in swimwear to a maximum ratio of 1 adult to 3 children.

Youth Access to Fitness Areas 16 years old or older to access weightroom, cardio room, and fitness classes. Ages 13-15 need to have passed the Youth on Weights program to gain access to these areas.

Do you need a flexible schedule. Flexreg (flexible registration) is an option that allows you to register for program days that work for you. Advance registration is required as we need to meet minimum numbers to run the program. Flexreg programs can be identified by the word Flex beside the program title. Whistler Emergency Social Services

The Resort Municipality of Whistler has chosen to partner with various organizations who provide quality speciality programs that we can not offer ourselves. These organizations are responsible for the delivery of the program and can be recognized in the program descriptions by their organizational logo or RSA beside the program name. If you have any questions about this procedure please contact the Program Services Supervisor at 604-935-8369.

On Tuesday and Friday nights at Meadow Park Sports Centre the RMOW offers patrons 50% off the regular drop-in rate after 6 p.m. This is in response to offering affordable recreational opportunities to promote active lifestyles.

Whistler Emergency Social Services (ESS) is a group of municipal staff and community volunteers that help displaced people meet their basic needs during a disaster like a fire, flood, or earthquake. ESS provides referrals for food, clothing, lodging, and medications as well as providing family unification and emotional support services.

In a large-scale disaster ESS will open community shelters.

Music Together Music together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for mixed ages of children Birth to four years of age. Children over 7 months of age are required to be registered participants in order to attend. It is based on the recognition that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence. Music is learned through developmentally appropriate activities that support and respect the unique style of very young children. Parents participate with the children and may bring more than one sibling to the classes. Registration for second child in the same family is $75.

Consisting of a series of theme-based classes, these sessions are designed for parents and babies to attend together. Each week families learn useful signs through fun songs, books, and activities. Registration & Administration Information

The Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Kids on the Go programs are licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and governed through Vancouver Costal Health and the Community care Facilities Licensing program. The community care facilities licensing program protects and promotes the health, safety and well-being of vulnerable children and adults in licensed care facilities. We do this through education, collaboration and regulation. A community care facilities licence is required for all programs and facilities providing care to three or more children who are not related to the operator by blood or marriage.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) offers a safe environment for children to expand their horizons through our various sporting and recreation programs. For the past 24 years, the RMOW has been providing a nurturing, stimulating and challenging environment for the afterschool program known as Kids on the Go.

How to register for the first time If you are having your child attend our program for the first time please contact the office at 604.935.8370 or email kotg@ whistler.ca to set up an appointment to review our program and receive notification of all the appropriate paperwork required.

Part of being a licensed program requires very specific paperwork including a copy of your child’s immunization records and emergency consent cards that must be filled out in person prior to your child attending, (these travel with us and contain your contact information and consent for your child to receive emergency care should something occur while in our care).

How to add days once your child has attended Please email kotg@whistler.ca or phone 604.935.8370 in you request for additions or cancellations in accordance with our cancellation and refund policy. Both the phone voice mail and email are checked frequently throughout the day so please leave a message of your request and we will get back to you in a timely manner. To add a full day or afterschool day, a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required. Space is not guaranteed with minimal notice.

Sam Strong, Program Leader My name is Sam Strong and I have worked for the Recreation Department for just over two years. I started out as a Program Leader for the KOTG program shortly after I moved to Whistler in 2013. I am now a preschool teacher as well as one of the creators of the new LIT program. With my background in recreation studies, I love how Whistler has an endless outdoor playground for creating teachable moments and fostering a sense of adventure. Whistler is an amazing city that is always encouraging positive participation in its community. Through recreation, I want to help encourage that sense of positive change for the children in our programs. You may see me making silly faces, or painting myself purple. I believe the messier the activity, the more fun you have. The mountains stole my heart, and I am excited to see what fun will be created in the coming year!

Physical Literacy Fundamental Movement Skills Mastering Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is the most important step in developing physical literacy. FMS are basic movement skills taught through games and activities that engage children and motivate them to continue in an activity. While these basic skills are fun in nature, they also serve the purpose of teaching the essential skills required as a foundation for more complex physical activities and sports. It is important that all children develop a good base of these skills before puberty to optimize both future performance and lifelong activity.

How to Become a Lifeguard

Lifeguarding and Swim Instructing can be one of the most valuable and rewarding training experiences of your life. Lifeguards/Swim Instructors prevent incidents from occurring, perform rescues and first aid when accidents do happen, and teach/promote water safety to community members of all ages, especially children. If you enjoy helping others, making a difference in people’s lives and being around the water, then Lifeguarding/Swim Instructing may be for you! In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decisionmaking skills as they relate to water rescue and first aid.

Candidates develop Water Smart速 confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Prerequisites are an ability to swim and being 11-12 years old. Participants may be eligible to register for both Bronze Star AND Bronze Medallion if they are 12 years old and registered in the current Bronze Star program (contact Jon Pollard at 604 935-8357 for availability), please note that participants must complete all Bronze Star skills before being eligible to complete Bronze Medallion. 100% attendance and participation is mandatory to complete this course.

The Bronze Cross award is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs, including National Lifeguard Service速 (NLS) and Instructor certification.

Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion. 100% attendance and participation is mandatory for eligibility to complete this course.

Through fun activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres.

Safety skills include identifying safe swimming areas, jumping into deep water, swimming 5m, surface support for 20 seconds a return to safety, throwing assists and sitting dives.

Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and complete the program once all criteria have been achieved. Children 5 years or older are ready for the appropriate level of Red Cross Swim Kids.

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water.

Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

RCSK 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

RCSK 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

RCSK 10

This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Participation in Red Cross Swim may qualify you for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

AQUA FIT SHALLOW: Stay cool while getting your heart pumping in the water. Join us for a fun intense shallow water Aqua Fit class that incorporates different training methods such as interval training, strength and stretching in the water.

AQUA FIT DEEP: Join us for this refreshing aerobic workout if you want to train your Cardio Vascular System in a new environment or if you are coming back to training after an injury or if you need a low impact aerobic workout to add volume to your training week.

20/20/20: 20 min of Cardio, 20 min of strength exercises and 20 min of core and stretching. You will get it all! Every week will be slightly different from the last so you will be constantly challenged and will experience gains when you come back each week.

BOOT CAMP: This class brings the traditional outdoor workout inside the gym. SPIN AND STRENGTH: This is a limited time offer class! 5 weeks in the Fall only. This class is in the smaller studio with an instructor to participant ratio of 1:10. This class will be include a variety of resistance tools for strength work and spin intervals on the bike followed by ab work and a stretch.

STEP: This is a classic and guaranteed to get your heart pumping. Follow along to fun and easy to learn step combinations designed to keep you moving and sweating. Finish off with some core and abs work and a good simple stretch.

STRETCH & RESTORE YOGA: Unwind from your day in this calming class. This style of yoga compliments an active lifestyle, both on the physical and mental levels! Class includes conscious movement and stretches designed to help overall range of motion and tissue health. TRX CHALLENGE: This 45min lunchtime class using nothing but the TRX. Flow quickly from one exercise to the next strengthening your core during every move. TRX MIXER: Is a strength focused high intensity interval circuit session! Build lean muscle while using the weight of your body as your source of resistance. This is a circuit style class including TRX and whatever other equipment the instructor chooses.

Spin TRX This class will combine a great cardio workout on the spin bike with exercises on the TRX. TRX is known for ‘all core all the time’. Basketball Guidelines

1. All squash court reservations require immediate payment.

2. Pass-holders may book no more than seven days in advance and drop-ins may book no more than three days in advance.

Please provide your full name or pass number at the time of booking.

3. Monthly, 3 Month, 6 Month and Annual pass-holders may only reserve and play one court time per day. The only exception is double or back-to-back bookings are permitted before noon.

4. Cancellation must be at least 24 hours in advance. No refunds for courts cancelled within 24 hours. Reservations made by annual and monthly pass holders will pay the equivalent of 1 visit of a 30x playtime squash pass if the reservation is cancelled within 24 hours. Passes will be frozen until all fees are collected. The person booking the court is responsible for the cancellation charges. Bookings made within 24 hours are non-refundable.

5. The drop-in fee is per person, per court time.

6. Court time is 45 minutes.

7. All players must wear CLEAN non-marking shoes (white soles). To keep court floors in good playing condition, no street shoes or outside shoes may be worn on court at any time.

8. Players under the age of 19 years must wear eye protection.

For players 19 years and over, eye protection is strongly recommended to prevent eye injury. Protective eyewear is included with racquet rental or available for purchase.

9. Racquets are available to rent for a fee of $4.50 until the 8:30pm court time (not available for 9:15pm count time).

10. Collateral is required for any equipment that is borrowed or rented. Preferably ID, not MPSC member card.

Afterschool Hockey Scrimmage

Everyone is welcome for public skating sessions! Regular admission rates apply and skate rental fees are applicable. We recommend that all participants be dressed appropriately. Our “game zone” is set up for shinny hockey. Plastic sticks and pucks are provided. Complimentary helmets are strongly recommended. **Schedule subject to change based on special events and holidays.

This hockey session is designed for fun giving children a chance to wrap up the hockey season with non-stuctured playful scrimmages. And for those who haven’t played all season an opportunity to try their skills in a game environment. This is pond hockey with full gear required.

Drop-in Hockey General rules: All participants must pay and sign in at the front desk before entering the arena. Sessions are not supervised but random checks are made to ensure levels of play and payment are met.

Full hockey equipment is mandatory including a CSA approved helmet. No body contact is allowed. Minimum age requirement is 16 years old. Parents must complete a waiver for players between the ages of 16-18 years inclusive. This waiver is kept on file for one calendar year.

Maximum 24 players and 2 goaltenders per session.

Drop-in: Is designed for both novice and experienced players. A competitive, but friendly faster paced session available to all skill levels. Aggressive play will not be tolerated.

Old-timers and Women’s: This session is designed for a less competitive pace of play. “Oldtimers” must be 35yrs+ based on CARHA standards. Level of play is to be represented of a novice level. Not recommended for “A” or “Rec” division hockey players.

For $119 plus tax you can rent the Millar Room plus access to some toys. This room is a great size for 5 years and under and even has room for a small bouncy castle should you want to rent one.

Have fun with the kids on the ice. Play a little bit of hockey or just enjoy a skate on the ice. This activity is for every age and skill level. Meadow Park Sports Centre offers a 3 hour room rental for a resident Birthday Party up to 25 people during our public skate times for $48 plus tax. Tables, chairs, helmets and hockey sticks will be provided at no extra costs.

For those older children who need more space to play we provide half or full gym along with the Millar Room for food and crafts.

Price includes sporting equipment of your choice along with tables and chairs. •

For a half gym and the Millar Room, the cost is $145 plus tax

For a full gym and the Millar Room, the cost is $165 plus tax

Prices are for Party maximums of 25 including adults for a minimum 3 hour booking.

Skating Party

Pool Party For children who would rather play in the water how about a pool party? Come and enjoy our leisure pool, a swirl in our kids whirlpool or play around our mushroom fountain. Our Fitness Studio is the perfect place for a Party afterwards. The room can be rented for 3 hours for $64 plus tax. Tables and chairs will be provided. *Regular admission rates apply. Towels, skates, racquets and tokens can be rented for an extra fee. **Parties with more than 25 people will pay more for insurance.
