Message from the Mayor
Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Fall/Winter 2014–2015 Recreation Program Guide. This guide shows the great range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages offered in Whistler. Detailed here are the kettle bell classes, parent and baby fitness classes, Zumba, yoga, swimming, skating, toddler story times, art classes, and other activities. Children have as many, if not more, options than adults through programs like Kids on the Go and the Early Years programs. Advanced aquatic courses such as the Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross are also offered for older children. New programming this fall includes the Mountains of Mystery active program for preschoolers, modern dance classes for beginner to intermediate 11 to 16 year olds, total body workouts for 13 to 17-year-old girls at GirlsRStrong, and a dance mingler for adults. Many of these activities take place at Meadow Park Sports Centre, Whistler’s community hub for sports. The facility offers fitness programs, personal training, swimming lessons, public skating, a six-lane 25-metre pool, a leisure pool, sauna, steam room, and hot tub. For me, like many of Whistler’s residents and visitors, the year-round recreation drew me to the area. I enjoy running, hiking, and walking our dog along Whistler’s trails. In the winter I downhill and cross-country ski, snowshoe, and skate at Meadow Park as well Whistler Olympic Plaza. This winter, I encourage you to visit the Lost Lake cross-country trails. These 25 kilometres of trails are groomed, a track is set, and they are suitable for all levels of cross-country skier as well as snowshoers. The trails are also open in the evening—perfect for after work. A short drive away, Ski Callaghan has a further 100 kilometres of trails which are one of our community’s many legacies from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. I hope you enjoy an active fall and winter this year!

Karine Choiniere, Recreation Cashier My name is Karine, some time ago I decided to drive across the country to expand my horizon, and see where the wind would take me next. I decided to check out Whistler and see what all the buzz was about. Like so many of us I had planned to be here for one winter, that was 13 years ago now!! Working at Meadow Park for the past 6 years has allowed me to meet so many amazing people in this great community. Whistlerites are a passionate and dedicated bunch when it comes to working hard and playing harder. That’s what makes this place so vibrant and youthful and therefore so inspiring to me.

Grade 5/10 Program Council has approved the continuation of the Grade 5/10 Get Active Program. This program provides a free membership to the Meadow Park Sports Centre for all Whistler Grade 5 and 10 students from September 30, 2014 until September 29, 2015. Research shows that by allowing youth to make their own social recreational choices they form healthy lifestyle habits that last into adulthood. By offering free admission to Meadow Park Sports Centre more young people are able to participate in recreational activities which will support the trend towards active living while addressing the issue of affordability.
50% off Nights On Tuesday and Friday nights at Meadow Park Sports Centre the RMOW offers patrons 50% off the regular drop-in rate after 6 p.m. This is in response to offering affordable recreational opportunities to promote active lifestyles.

Connect is an attachment-based program for parents and caregivers of preteens (8-12) and teens (13-18) who are struggling to understand and respond to difficult behaviour. Parents meet in small groups with 2 trained group leaders for 10 weeks, 1 hour each week. Each session provides parents with new information about parent-child relationships and adolescent development. Parents watch role-plays and try exercises that offer new choices for responding to their child’s behaviour. Connect understands that each child, and each parent, is different, and that change is part of development. Rather than teach only one way of parenting, Connect helps parents see choices that support healthy relationships, including setting limits and helping their child to move forward. Marina Lohse, Program Leader Supervisor In 2001 I made my first trip to Whistler to visit my brother and sister. Twelve years later I finally followed suit and made the move from Ontario. I have been living in Whistler for three years now and am so happy to call this place home. I am the Program Leader Supervisor at the Myrtle Philip Community Centre in the Preschool Programs and after school program Kids On the Go. I love telling people that I pretty much get to play all day! There is never a dull moment working with kids and with the variety of programs we run, there is always something exciting to look forward to.
