With the incentive support of FortisBC, the Resort Municipality of Whistler recently finished final upgrades of the Meadow Park Sports Centre aquatic centre heating systems. The total system included the installation of a 60 m2 solar hot water array, a 700 MBH geoexchange system, as well as the replacement of eight older atmospheric boilers functioning at approximately 63% efficiency with four new advanced condensing boilers designed to operate at greater than 94% efficiency.

Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s (RMOW) Spring/Summer Recreation Program Guide. This is your guide to all of the recreation programs offered by the municipality. There’s something for everyone in the guide from preschool and afterschool programs to summer camps, swimming lessons, fitness classes for adults and seniors, drop-in sports and youth programs.

The RMOW manages the Meadow Park Sports Centre – Whistler’s community hub for sports, recreation and more. This multipurpose facility includes a six-lane pool, kids’ pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub, in addition to an arena, squash courts, weight room and fitness studio.

Children’s summer swimming lessons are a great way to encourage active lifestyles, fitness, safety, and swimming skills around and in the water. This summer the Meadow Park Sports Centre will be offering all Red Cross Water Safety Lessons, from parented, to preschool to SwimKids classes. Families should book early for these popular lessons, which fill up fast.

The municipality also provides programming through Myrtle Philip Community School, Whistler Secondary School, Spring Creek Community School, Spruce Grove Field House, Lost Lake Passivhaus, and Whistler’s Youth Centre, and maintains Whistler’s 31 community and neighbourhood parks and multi-use Valley Trail. Our community parks, public access to our lakes, and extensive Valley Trail provide access for strolling, cycling, and dog-walking and other leisure activities in spectacular natural settings.

If you are looking for something fun for your kids to do during their summer break, we have the answer. The RMOW offers five unique camps and sports programs that are jammed packed with fun! Camps are offered at Myrtle Philip Community School and run from July 2 to August 29. Camp Summer Sunsations and Camp Breakout are designed for school-aged children and run Monday to Friday while the kids are out of school for the summer. Register early, because the camps fill up fast.

Through our various recreational facilities, the municipality provides residents, second homeowners and visitors a variety of programs and flexible pass options to suit many needs. From drop in classes to programs that require registration to week-long camps for the kids, Whistler has something for everyone this summer. Whistler is recreation.

We are fortunate to live in Whistler. It’s an active community with world class facilities, access to nature, and endless recreation opportunities.

About the Whistler Public Library Founded in 1986, the Whistler Public Library, also known as Whistler Living Room, is housed in an environmentally efficient, award-winning building in the heart of Whistler Village. The library provides access to a collection of over 52,000 items, including hand-picked selection of best-selling and classic fiction, current and diverse non-fiction materials, and a robust movie collection. The library also offers audiobooks, video games, and a newsstand quality selection of magazines. For the curious researcher, the library had over 25 databases accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The library hosts weekly programming for patrons from birth to adulthood and provides 24-hour wireless access both inside and out of the library, computer access, printing, copying and scanning to email, and rental space for individuals and organizations.

The library is governed by a Board of Trustees and funded primarily by the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Libraries and Literacy branch of the provincial Ministry of Education.

Library books and other materials can be returned at any time – the outdoor book drops are open around the clock.

Services: We provide information in several formats for use in the library, online, and by borrowing materials to take home. These include books, audiobooks (via CD and download), e-books, magazines and journals (print and electronic), videogames, music CDs, and DVDs. Access: We offer free access to all our databases and research-based resources for everyone. We also offer free wireless access and free use of the computers and Internet.

We have printing in black and white and colour as well as scanning to email for a small fee.

Flexreg Do you need a flexible schedule? Flexreg (flexible registration) is an option that allows you to register for program days that work for you. Advance registration is required as we need to meet minimum numbers to run the program. Flexreg programs can be identified by the word Flex beside the program title. Flexreg programs are NOT available for on-line registration.

Registration Service Agreements The Resort Municipality of Whistler has chosen to partner with various organizations who provide quality speciality programs that we can not offer ourselves. These organizations are responsible for the delivery of the program and can be recognized in the program descriptions by their organizational logo or RSA beside the program name. If you have any questions about these programs please contact the Program Services Supervisor at 604-935-8369

Cancellations & Refunds Sometimes our programs are cancelled when you wait until the last minute to register. Our programs are cost recovery based and we need a minimum number of participants for each course.

Avoid disappointment - register early. Don’t wait! Programs with insufficient registration will be cancelled three days prior to the start date. Full refunds will be granted. If an individual withdraws from a program seven days or more prior to the start of a program, a full refund, less a $20 administration fee, will be granted. No refunds will be issued after this period. In medical cases, refunds are pro-rated and a doctor’s note is required.

Whistler Emergency Social Services Whistler Emergency Social Services (ESS) is a group of municipal staff and community volunteers that help displaced people meet their basic needs during a disaster like a fire, flood, or earthquake. ESS provides referrals for food, clothing, lodging, and medications as well as providing family unification and emotional support services. In a large-scale disaster ESS will open community shelters. Volunteers receive training, free of charge, through the Justice Institute of BC. Pam Deane, Recreation Programmer I came to Whistler from Ontario nearly twenty years ago and haven’t looked back! Originally here for the skiing, that changed to being a part of the community. Whistler is a fabulous place to raise kids and my three have lived the active Whistler lifestyle their whole lives.

As my kids get older, it makes me realize what a great job I have even more. As the Preschool/Children’s Programmer at Myrtle Philip, I love meeting and getting to know new children and families in Whistler.

When I’m not at the Community Centre, you can usually find me at Girl Guides, a swim meet, volleyball game or other event with my kids.

Music Together Music together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for mixed ages of children Birth to four years old. Children over 7 months of age are required to be registered participants in order to attend. It is based on the recognition that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence. Music is learned through developmentally appropriate activities that support and respect the unique style of very young children. Parents participate with the children and may bring more than one sibling to the classes. Registration for a second child in the same family is $50.

Youth Summer Dance Camp

For youth athletes who will be competing in crosscountry running races or fall sports that require speed. The 45 minute workouts cover all the bases of speed development - correct body positioning, efficient form, balance, agility and strength. Athletes will wrap up the program with a mini-test-event. Whether you want to learn or improve your dance skills, you will enjoy this dance camp! Students will work on Ballet technique, three types of jazz (lyrical-contemporary, street jazz and classical) and modern dance. In addition, students will learn what it takes to choreograph dance pieces, become familiar with different choreographers and have a chance to choreograph their own piece.

Classes will focus building strength, alignment and fluidity through stretching and movement. Students will learn to dance to the beat and rhythm. On the last day of the camp students will have a chance to perform their choreography, or have their choreography performed, for co-dancers, friends and/or family. RCSK 1

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

RCSK 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

RCSK 3

This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.

RCSK 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

RCSK 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water.

Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

RCSK 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

RCSK 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

RCSK 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Lifeguarding and Swim Instructing can be one of the most valuable and rewarding training experiences of your life. Lifeguards/Swim Instructors prevent incidents from occurring, perform rescues and first aid when accidents do happen, and teach/promote water safety to community members of all ages, especially children. If you enjoy helping others, making a difference in people’s lives and being around the water, then Lifeguarding/Swim Instructing may be for you! Lifesaving Society Instructor Recert

In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as they relate to water rescue and first aid. Candidates develop Water Smart速 confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. 100% attendance and participation is mandatory to complete this course. Prerequisites are an ability to swim and being 11-12 years old. This 6-week beginner running program features a gradual walk/run program that will get you safely on your way to a run filled summer. spring skills mountain bike clinics for women Women’s Beginner Learn the fundamental skills to give you the confidence it takes to venture off of the crushed gravel trails into the real singletrack of Lost Lake and West side trails. Perfect for riders that are new to riding technical singletrack but are comfortable with their stance on the bike on the gravel trails and some of the easier singletrack in Lost Lake. Private Squash Lessons

1. Pass holders may book no more than seven days in advance and drop-ins may book no more than three days in advance.

Please provide your full name along with a phone number or pass number at the time of booking.

Meadow Park Sports Centre is pleased to provide an in-house squash instructor for all levels of players. Learn the sport or improve on your current skills with instructor Rob Eberhard.

2. Pass holders and drop-ins may only reserve one court time per day. The only exception is double or back-to-back bookings, which are permitted before noon.

3. Cancellations must be at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to cancel on time will result in a charge for your court time.

4. The drop-in fee is per person.

5. Play time is 45 minutes 6. All players must wear non-marking shoes (white soles).

To keep court floors in good playing condition, no street shoes or outside shoes may be worn on the court at any time.

7. Players under the age of 19 years must wear eye protection.

For players over 19 years, eye protection is strongly recommended to prevent eye injury.

8. Racquets are available for rent at $4.50 each.

9. Last court reservation is 9:15 p.m. for exit from building at 10 p.m.

10. First court reservation is at 6:15 a.m.

We highly recommend the use of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear is available for your matches at no charge, or you may purchase your own from our pro-shop.

For $119 plus tax you can rent the Miller Room plus access to some toys. This room is a great size for 5 years and under and even has room for a small bouncy castle should you want to rent one.

Have fun with the kids on the ice. Play a little bit of hockey or just enjoy a skate on the ice. This activity is for every age and skill level. Meadow Park Sports Centre offers a 3 hour room rental for a Birthday Party up to 25 people during our public skate times for $45 plus tax. Tables, chairs, helmets and hockey sticks will be provided at no extra costs.

For those older children who need more space to play we provide half or full gym along with the Miller Room for food and crafts.
