The project explores the paradoxical situation between profit-driven society and environmental destruction as well as climigration as a result of this phenomena. We try to consider how original essences like "nostalgic factor" could optimize in architectural design as a representation of place identity, which cultivated by local climate and culture.

The project operates in Longyearbyen, Svalbard where is the northernmost city of the world.

The town is called the island of paradox because it is wavering between ecological importance and geopolitical importance as a remote island of Norway. Furthermore, super high avalanche risk in this area is accelerated by climate change which the local people will need to migrate safe place. That is why the project aims to mitigate this contradicted situation by designing the new architecture which people could migrate safer area with their trace of the past life and less environmental burden.

As a methodology of the project, we employ machine learning material detection, a study of the hyper typology and binary codes with voxelization and material application from abandoned building to a new building which the project proposed. In this town, Norwegian government plans to decommission facilities inside of high avalanche risk area. Thus, the project uses these materials from decommissioned building for the new building by detecting through machine learning and cataloguing its property as a database. The new building is a result of the hybridization of a multi-building based on working time and user population to make the best use of the remaining area in Longyearbyen due to avalanche risk. The hybridization is executed through voxelization with the six-digit binary code which involves spatial and structural information influenced by the logic of Wave Function Collapse, and the process proposes voxel-bashing.

Additionally, nostalgic factor and typologies in the town are combined into the design through algorithmic optimization. Finally, the voxel-bashing applies material from the decommissioned catalogue based on the property of the material and the binary code. The new building is an aggregation of the trace in the town but looks new, and this methodology which brings unimagined result basis on digital language and the hyper typology can be called exquisite architectural cadaver.

The area has a strategically important place for Norwegian government as a remote island.

Svalbard, Longyearbyen has been wavering between the gravity of environmental protection and geopolitics ,as well as facing decreasing living areas due to high avalanche risk. Environmental law in Svalbard is one of the strictest environmental regulation of the world to protect nature in this archipelago as well as keep the legacy of industrial development.

Svalbard is geopolitically crucial for Norwegian government because the location works to keep a strong influence towards inside of the Arctic circle. The Arctic is told a Mecca of resources that so many countries have been paying attention. By keeping Svalbard as Norwegian territory, they can access these resources.

That is why the area had been the area of political conflict, and some part is still ongoing. For example, Russia is still keeping some Russian economy based site in Svalbard as they may monitoring some possibilities. Thus, although the area’s environmental burden (Ecological footprint) is ten times more than living in mainland Norway, the government have to keep the population in the archipelago.

2020- Decommissioning Svalbard The project approaches this circumstance by proposing digitally mitigated building for people to continue to live Longyearbyen.

This is the estimated avalanche high risk area map. It projects considerable area are faced serious risk of catastrophy.

Avalanche risk and Longyearbyen are in an inseparable relationship due to the unique U-shape valley geo-condition. On the one hand, the catastrophe becomes more severe year by year because of climate change. The local government is monitoring the condition and publish the map of hazardous avalanche zone to prevent tragedies which have happened the past. Furthermore, they have announced that the area which will be covered by the dangerous avalanche zone is mandatorily decommissioned. Global warming gives an enormous impact on this uncertain situation.

SCENARIO Since the Arctic circle is the so-called mecca of resources, the sovereignty of the territory inside of the Arctic circle is a crucial strategy for all countries. Although the border is prominent, the maritime border is more complicated than the land one because the rule is fragile. Some states have been trying to insist on their maritime territory unofficially due to the circumstance. It has been effecting to make the tension between the countries. The

main issue of the marine border is the rule of extension of the continental shelf. Based on facts and data, do not involve in diplomatic issues. Take decisions based on Topographical and Geological similarities with the countries landmass. As a result of the rule complexity, there remains some overlapped territory that need an agreement between countries.

This diagram shows the brief scenario of the project to represent the focus point. The Arctic as a scope, the research of the project starts from what profit driven society brings and affects to our society. Climigration and lost of place identity are key role to conduct the project. The rapid development of the society brought massive impact towards environment as well as conditions of resources. Longyearbyen, Svalbard represent this situation a lot through the paradoxical situation between sovereignty and environmental importance as well as high avalanche risk. Some residents in the town needs to migrate due to avalanche risk, which is typical situation of climigration. Also, they are facing the lost of their nostalgic landscape. The project tackle this situation with the several technical and theoretical methodology.

Relevant research shows many factors determine the speed and range of avalanches or landslides. To make sure which area buildings will be demolished or collapse which makes it easier to analyze and use these building materials, we divided avalanche range in every 20 years and overlapping these information and maps predict the degree of hazardous zones for every 20 years.

This illustration shows what types function of buildings may be demolished in different years, and if it is residential, how much people will lose their home.

It shows how the result become more and more accurate by increasing an iteration amount. For example, while, the accuracy of 300 hundred iteration result shows around 88% accuracy, 1000 times one shows approximately 92%, and 2000 times shows over 96%. Addition to the percentage, the segmentation results shows clear difference by the iteration. 300 iteration looks mess and it does not show any accuracy, but 2000 iteration somehow shows precise segmentation, which is improved from the 300 result.

The decommissioning catalogue offers multiple information for the material application.

Not only application towards each architectural function but also provide the sustainable factor of material such as longevity. The catalogue is digitized and applies to the voxelbashing (chapter6) to design the final building. It can be a material library to propose alternative utilization of material. The trans-material utilization catalogue is used combining with the material catalogue. Based on each material property, the catalogue proposes the possibility of various utilization not based on its original function. Materials would get more opportunity to reuse by employing the catalogue. The four types are based on the material catalogue classification. The project also designed the 3D decommissioning catalogue to use in the virtual world to find material quickly. Each material is being layout based on durability, hardness, brittleness and flexural strength. Thus, it is designed that users can choose from various parameter.

Another prototype we made for the collective building was trying to evolve it with urban planning methodology. By analysis and divide different zones we convert this relationship from horizontal to vertical. Gas station, warehouse and electricity supply are allocated at the bottom to ensure heavy cargo or large volume of transportation; Church, restaurant and any other facilities which has strong connection with citizens are allocated at the middle, while UNIS and satellite station are set on the top, enhance their

relevant research. Resident houses are attached to the middle parts near main structure at this stage. There were less organizing or design so we considered some further study of floor plan typology for next stage.The living area is the representative of small hotel which consists of bedroom, kitchen and public space.

And it is designed by using the concept of public building which has a service way to facilitate staffs. The facade is also designed by taking the response to the context as a priority.

VOXELIZATION

This diagram shows the transformation of the voxel that we treat. The target building is voxelized to 1x1x1m voxel, and each voxel is feed spatial or structural information based on the original condition of the targeted building.

Then, it separates to be 3x3x3m voxel which is a unit for the hybridization process. This 3x3x3 voxel is recombined based on the binary language. After the hybridization process, the voxel applies material from the decommissioning catalogue . The voxelization is started from transform 3D model to 1x1x1m scale voxel. The reason why we choose the 1x1x1m is it was a appropriate scale to capture architectural space and strcuture. Then, the voxelized building is applied the six-digit binary code to each 1x1x1m based on the voxelized building’s original spatial and structural condition. The six-digit binary code is defined by the result of spatial classification (chapter5).

Img4 and Img6 introduces it detailed structure. After all the 1x1x1m voxel is applied the binary code, it is separated into 3x3x3m combination voxel. 3x3x3m voxel is aggregation of nine 1x1x1m voxel, that is to say one 3x3x3 voxel involve nine spatial or structural information.

These 3x3x3m voxel is used for a re-manipulation process to hybridize multiple target. Even the targeted building are decommissioned its original character remain the new design with 3x3x3 scale.

Nostalgia factor

3x3x3 voxel (Img1-3) is a unit for the voxel re-manipulation. It consists of nine voxels that each one has binary architectural information. Some units are an incomplete unit which does not has nine voxel, and these units are appeared due to original architectural shape. This incomplete unit works to inherit the physical characteristics of the hybridizing targeted building.

An adjacent voxel is defined by spatial classification (chapter

five), and it differs from if vertical or horizontal adjacent. This neighbourhood relationship is also used for the re-manipulation to the hybrid building. This logic would bring, the hybrid building can keep some atmosphere of the hybridized original building in a very abstract way with at least 3x3x3 scale. Thus people may feel their past lifestyle from the new hybrid building.

The logic of materials application is related to voxel condition, which has a several way to construct depends on materials in catalog and the binary classification in space voxel. This process combination between catalog and voxelized analysis. Each main voxel has different surrounded voxel. Materials application process is the process that apply proper materials into main voxel in order to create structure to serve the specific condition of surrounded voxel. This process make the different of structure and facade in terms of physical component and characteristic.

Each space voxel contains information of specific atmosphere,

so the structure (envelope voxel) has a duty to create atmosphere inside. Thus, materials from catalog are used to constructed. For example, space voxel (Pink) needs transparent space, asymmetry feeling and horizontal led feeling. So, structure outside (envelope voxel) has to be constructed by using most of material as a horizontal component. In order to avoid the ordered construction of facade inside and outside, architects have to use a lot of size of material from catalog to create ambiguous pattern for asymmetry feeling.

The concept of final design is gathering materials from demolished building in catalog to create new architectural typology. The strategy to layout zoning is a obvious distinction the zones between private and public. Facilities and main circulation start from the center and expand as a axis through another function. Accommodation area is located on the outskirts of the building, because it is easy for extension and

renovation in the future. Moreover, separation between facility area and accommodation area provides privacy to people who live in the building. The church area is mainly designed underneath the consideration about nostalgic sense. So, there is a high gable roof as a character not only for nostalgic sense outside, but also for the atmosphere inside. Accommodation is designed with a courtyard in the middle area. It will be comfortable for

people who live in the building, because there is a connection from courtyard to the main circulation for traveling to another area. Infrastructures are raised up above the ground in order to prevent the penetration of permafrost underground. Therefore, there must be a structure that supports it.

One of the priority to design the church is nostalgic sense of church. The way to define exact nostalgic sense of architecture in Svalbard is “social media”. Most of architectural component that has been taken and post onto the internet. In this case, the characteristic of exterior church provides nostalgic sense to people, which is high gable roof and old materials.

Interior space is divided mainly into 2 sections, which is church and restaurant area. Moreover, there is sub-space which connect 2 area together. For example, the entrance of church and restaurant can be combined together because there is a overlapped function.

But some space cannot be combined, particularly unique space like crossing and transept of church.

The highest part of the building is community area, which is blended with supermarket and hotel. There is outdoor space for resting and facilitating infrastructures. Facade is constructed from several demolished building. This method brings variety to facade in terms of texture and color.

The section shows the complexity of space and different floor level. The clear classification of the floorlevel is also the division of functions, which makes it less confusing to people inside in order to use the spaces.

The area of ​​the accommodation is clearly designed to be in the outer zone. The reason to separate accommodation area from the central function is to create privacy and easy for extension in the future phase.

The section of accommodation area is not complicated compared to another function. Accommodation is not proper to be complex area, because it is hard to people who live inside to distinguish between mixing area and living area.

RAN MO ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 2016-2020 SELECTED WORKS

In the late 1970s, China University of Mining Technology established its new campus in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, which is known as Wenchang campus. A boiler house was built together with many other school facilities in Wenchanag. Located at northwest of the central mountain, the boiler house converted huge amount of coal into heat, providing steam and boiling water to surrounding buildings and apartments for the last century.

The city developed its heating system from local divided heating to district heating in 1990s.

Many boiler houses were abandoned and this one in Wenchang was no exception. Machines stoped, fire extinguished, labors also lefted this old building alone.

As an important cultural heritage in this area, the boiler house survived the demolition and most parts are well preserved. People now also believe the memory of last generation should not be forgot.

CONCEPT The biggest issue of the old boiler house is its transparency. Old exterior wall are heavy with only a few small windows, makes most interior space dark and depressive. The reconfiguration process only has 2 key ideas: transform solid form into void, and draw in more natural light.

Transformation The bent frame structure is replaced by light metal, which gives more chance for larger windows and curtain walls.

Natural light More natural light from south is drawn into the dark box, creating reflection between light coloured materails and make them brighter.

PRIMARY SPACE Change the solid roof of the primary part into frosted glass, support by steel truss.

AXONOMETRIC DRAWING An explosion version view from southwest. The the primary space of the boiler house has a full height multi functional space and a tiered mezzanine, which mainly supports creation works and presentation.

The long corridor at the back is the only connection to the Pharos. It also provide a bright space for artists to photograph and paint.

Two coal ramps are combined with the main building. The longer one is connected to the adjacent mini-showroom.

It also slightly alienates the drive-in theater with a certain privacy. The shorter one is well-lit with tons of natural light and a good view and leads people to the south cafe -lofts.

Due to the special structure, the hall has a large open space which can fit various activities. Users can change the hall between different modes depends on current need simply by moving funitures and curtains. They can use the large, thick curtains creating a closed space for drawing seminar, or just move them away for excibition. During night, musicians can re-organize furnitures' layout for their stage. As the building can transform between different and specific modes easliy, the whole artstation can well fit various needs in the neighborhood.

— PROGRAM CIRCULATION — The Pharos Artstation mainly works as a volunteer project, it provides activity rooms, hosts exhibitions and seminars of art basics for free. Some additional functions can also make profit: concert tickets, cafe and bar, shop selling and motorcycle customization.

All the incomes are used for the art station's daily operating expenses and further developments.

ATTACHMENT THE ENTRANCE The entrance is at the back of the movie screen.

The corridor brings totally different experience from the hall for visitors.

THE CAFE The cafe located at the south is renovated from two cinder funnels. The cafe level is connected to the hall with a small stair, which was developed from an old cinder corridor. Custmoers can enjoy the natual beauty of the mountains and drink coffee in such a special space.

THE BIKERS' CLUB The bikers' club, renovated from the old water room, is mainly designed for some motorcycle fans for some modification work. Members can customize patterns on shells, upgrade engine and hydraulic system, or just drive in and chat with other motor lovers.

Even Germany is running out of capacity these days. Any land on earth seems unsuitable. What if we look for another planet with more room and resources, far away from conflicts and wars, and build up a new sociaty for these multiculture mankind?

Humans are always facinated by the idea of interplanetary colonization, not only did we produce tons of sci-fi works but also conduct countless scientific researches. Mars, witch has lots favorable conditions (soil, mineral, potential water source), becomes the most popular for interplanetary colonization in Solar system. From private company's plan Mars One, to the government organization NASA, people all started their practical action.

According to ralevent researches, Mars Environment Terraforming (heat the atmosphere and produce enough oxygen for breathing) is possible but time-consuming. During this one thousand years, immigrants could only be crowded in space capsule like canned fish, with a repressing, low-efficient working environment and the risk of homesickness.

How can they build up a city rather than interplanetary redugees' camps? Just like Jamestown, the first settlement established in North Amercia in 1607.

A special arbor in south Africa named Artocarpus incisa (Thunb.) L. also inspires me. The trees can store large amount of organic material and water to survive the dry season. Local animals and people regard them as their vital resource.

Biosphere II, the third inspiration, also provides a possibly method. By covering the whole city with a huge dome and creating an semi-closed ecosystem, people can well arrange the micro climate inside. The dome can also prevent citizens from critical tempreture and harmful cosmic rays.

CORE TUBE CONTROL CENTER The control center is consist of four towers at four directions, each administrate nearby flight and distribute landing area for aircraft. Towers are connect to outer ring city through the corridors.

STAR PORT The peripheral plantform around is designed for air vehicles' docking. It also provides room for loading supplies, such as liquid hydrogen and drikold.

The big hole at center is designed for vertical transportation and ventilation. The fan system installed at the bottow of the hole keeps airflow cycle of the whole micro climate working, blow in or out air depends on temporal condition.

MAGNATIC TRACK

This long track is designed for Base on the developed electromagnetic technic, the magnatic track can launch heavy aircraft with few energy.

The hangar inside provides extra room for storage.

The Exchanger group between the track and theical reactor group are not only heat sink but also the lung of whole life support system. Special form gives it more surface areas, covered with semi permeable membraneand, connected with exchange devices installed inside.

REACTOR GROUP This group contains three different reaction but co-operate as one. They produce oxygen for air exchange and ethylene for futher reaction.

The advanced production, E-diesel, an enviroment friendly fuel, would be stored in four fuel container and delivered to the port.

The cap of compound material prevent substance from too much light.

STRUCTURE & PIPE Pipes inside are of two different use: transporting cold water to the nuclear reactor to cool it down or transporting steam up to the electrolysis device.

The composite metal web strengthen tower structure. It also helps cool the water down.

Although the output is much smaller than nuclear reaction, it can support the water cycle runs independently in case of emergency.

WATER CYCLE The reaction group consumes most waste heat of steam produced by nuclear coolant and generates cold water. These water cooling down the nuclear reactor and become hot steam again. Because the principle of thermal convection, the whole system runs highly efficiently.

MICRO-CLIMATE WITHOUT THE TOWER In this semi-sealed biome, hot airflow tend to rise and gather at the top of the dome. And as the density of O2 is smaller than CO2, hot fresh air tend to gather at top while most colonialists at lower part don't have enough O2 for breath, tempreture also remain low level.

NATURAL THERMAL CONVECTION MICRO-CLIMATE WITH THE TOWER The huge fan inside the star port can distinctly promote the convection of airflow, force hot air with high concentration O2 go down to residentail area and keep the colonization's warmth.

INTERVENED THERMAL CONVECTION As a mega-structure in colonization, the tower provides not only life support but other functions for various activities. Cargo pilots have specific space for resting, labors are also provided comfortable shelters inside this huge machines.

Freshwater, food and other necessaries are all storaged in case. Military force, emergency treat and other basic facilities are all included. This mega-structure will keep operating as long as the colonization exits, until human finish the Mars Environment Terraforming project.

For a long time, architecture in university is regarded as a "practical" major due to its various classical courses, including hand drawing, model making, historical buildings' researching and many other creative works. However, with the technology's developing and the popularization of PC, more and more architecture students in China rely too much on computer's assistant. Manual model seems to be useless compared with 3D modeling, hand drawing is unefficient and slower than computer drawing. We all benefit from new technology indeed, but something involved architecture accomplishment we should never abandon. Was it possible to create a college where we can better combine the new and the old teaching mechanism togehter? That's what Cyber College tries to do.

The Cyber College is located at Nanshan dist, Shenzhen, Guangdong province. Surrounded by many other universities and science park, the college has many potential oppotunities for avant teaching method.

CONCEPT LOGICAL STRUCTURE The layout of the Cyber College refers to both computer hardware logic and topology. Four main room are placed at each corner as CPU, and four grades are set anticlockwise while there have some relevant components between each room. Grade 2&3 share the basic classroom, and grade 3&4 share the model room. The global connection let people from any room communicate with visitors through the Switch easily. There are also local connections between each two CPU, which students can co-operate more efficiently with adjacent grades through them.

TEACHING MECHANISM Inspired from the classical scheduel of Bauhaus, Cyber College has another optimized teaching mechanism: Since the Cyber College mainly services advanced students, the baisc courses, including structure, architecture history, study of form and materials are keeped but much more simplified. After finishing these courses, students are provided some latest technology training, most are about computer technology and machinery, to assist their further study: core design. Visitors and students from other places are allowed to attend part of their courses through lectures and seminars. This kind of communication runs through their 4 years.

Students process their models in the container, or discuss their drawing under it, with carriers driving beside and the the smell of electronic elements.

An baseroom under the whole college provide assist and rear services. Students can store their model materials and other sundries in the ROM, thus they can easily carry them to classroom through the RAM, a small lift besides. Main server and other facilities are stored at the core room.
