PREFACE

Icanvividlyremember, whilststandingunderthesolitarykampung amber sodium-vapour lamp-post light at about 05.30 o’clock in the cold morning, waiting for the school bus to pick me up to go to the Jasin English School, Malacca, when my late Grandfather (May Allah, the Most Glorified, the Exalted, blessed his soul) said, “Endan, I want you to be somebody who is fit to dine beside a King!” (Endan was my household name). As he puffed his Sherlock Holmestype pipe, he continued, “I want you to study and work hard!” (The emphases are mine).

Even at that tender age then, my Grandfather’s words became etched deeply in my heart and left a lasting impact. They put the drive in me and became the impetus for me to strive then on. Since then I have been approaching my career and life by studying and working hard. The results show, and I am proud with what I have accomplished. For that I am eternally grateful to my Grandfather (May Allah, the Most Glorified, the Most High, grant him peace) who had brought me up, schooled me and provide me the necessary guidance.

I had been through a lot during my time in Service, and I owe the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) that much for what I am today. Serving the RMN has been a privilege and the greatest honour of my live. There are stories and anecdotes to be told, and future generations need to know. In this respect, I sincerely belief that a little bit of my history needs to be documented and shared for posterity; hence, the birth of this Book.

This Book is essentially a memoir. It comprises of pictorial artefacts – newspaper and magazine clippings, letters, correspondences, signal messages, certificates, parchments, extracts from books, photographs, tags, memorabilia, mementos, keepsakes and other collectibles – all centred around me. They have been arranged, as far as practicable in chronological order from the Year 1970 until the Year 2022, a span of 52 years, to provide a time-and-space perspective of my years. Different from other memoirs, instead of me rambling with words, I just let these artefacts to do the talking. As the famous quote says, “A picture paints a thousand words!” I will say as little as possible.

ThisBookprovidessnap-shotsofwhatIhadencountered,done,being challenged with, achieved and experienced, warts and all, throughout my Service years of more than 38 years. I was fortunate in that I had the opportunity to serve the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Joint Services in high positions four times. It was an experience not many

will ever have. Perhaps something different from other memoirs, this Book includes a part of how I live out my life after living on the high pedestal as a Chief of Navy, and making myself useful and relevant to my family, the community and country after Service. In the years to come, I hope this Book will serve its main purpose of providing a historical perspective of the RMN and MAF in the past. Readers will be able to get glimpses of what made the RMN and MAF really ticked, who were the personalities involved, and how life was like back then. There are lessons from this Book to be learnt or un-learnt. I also hope that Readers will be able to draw out some inspirations. Researchers will find this Book useful, as it has many undisputable sources of literature in the forms of magazine and newspaper clippings, references, leads and others. The List of Index of the Book has been organized in such a way to facilitate quick references and researches. Lest we forget, some artefacts relate to RMN units and organizations which are no longer in existence. I have also indexed manypersonalitieswhoatonetimeoranotherhadinfluenced, affected or touched on my careers and my life.

I hope this Book will serve as a closure to the wants of my late Grandfather (May Allah, the Most Glorified, the Exalted, blessed his soul).

Andlastly,IoffersupplicationstoAllah, theMostGlorified, theExalted, for this Book to live on and continue to prove its worth, even though I am long gone. Aameen.

Endan, I want you to be somebody who is fit to dine beside a King!
My Years IN Service & After –
PREFACE IV
Mohamad bin Md Sab
Admiral Ramlan

Praise be to Allah, the Most Glorified, the Exalted, I am extremely grateful to the Almighty for giving me the strength and perseverance to complete this Book. Indeed, without His will and kind blessings, producing this Book would have been an insurmountable endeavour.

There are few words that can truly describe the gratitude I feel for this accomplishment.

I owe a debt of gratitude to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) for providing me an opportunity to produce this Book.

I must also say that this Book has been made possible with a lot of help from many people, both directly and indirectly. I thank the RMN Sea Power Centre (Pusat Strategi Maritim & Sejarah Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia) (PUSMAS TLDM) which has done so much to facilitate the production of this Book. PUSMAS TLDM has provided invaluable guidance and necessary assistance throughout the process of preparing this Book. Its staff’s patience, judgments and dedication have been most exemplary.

I am also indebted to many personalities who have taken time to respond to my numerous and repetitive requests for favours in preparingthisBook. Justtonameafew, asnamingallwouldrequirea chapterbyitself, theyincludedFirstAdmiralBaharuddin,Commander

Ajit, Commander Shamsuddin, Commander Hisham, Lieutenant Commander Muhaimin, Lieutenant Commander Khairul, Lieutenant Commander Khairul Anuar, Lieutenant Commander Iqbal, Lieutenant Alif, Lieutenant Adib “Bruiser”, Lieutenant Nazrin, Lieutenant Ann and Chief Petty Officer Azli, all of the RMN. By the professionalism, cooperation and enthusiasm they have shown clearly indicate that the RMN and the Malaysian Armed Forces are in good hands. I must also thank Miss Sumathi of Boustead Naval Shipyard.

Laying out the materials and setting up this Book has indeed been a very consuming effort. In this regard, I would like to express my sincere gratefulness and appreciation to Arif Corporation Sendirian Berhad and, especially, Encik Salihin for tolerating my fussiness in many occasions much too often.

Last, but not least, I would like to put on record the invaluable assistance I have had from the following organizations:

• National Hydrographic Centre

• National Library of Malaysia

• National Archives of Malaysia
