OUR MISSION: To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children

A Note from the PRESIDENT & CEO As my retirement is on the horizon, I started thinking about my experience as President of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. I have spent my entire career working for nonprofits. The first 10 years were spent at Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Louis, and the past 29 years at the Ronald McDonald House. Both organizations rely heavily on volunteers, and most importantly, both are managed and led by a group of volunteers who serve as the Board of Directors. During my time at Ronald McDonald House, I have worked with 16 “bosses” who served as Board Chairs of the organization. And in addition to the Board Chairs, we have had over 175 folks serve on the Board of Directors. With many nonprofits, the Board Members may serve as one of the dysfunctional components of the organization. I’ve had many colleagues from other organizations share throughout the years that they have experienced it firsthand and deal with daily challenges. I’m grateful to share that I have never experienced it here. RMHC St. Louis Board Members are extremely dedicated, engaged, and integral to our mission. I want to share more about the commitment I have seen at RMHC St. Louis throughout the years. We have many wonderful volunteers who continue to stay involved even after their term ends. The person overseeing the new Ronald McDonald House Building Committee was also my first Board Chair and “boss” 29 years ago, Steve Hays. Steve has stayed active through multiple capital campaign projects for the organization. Our Let’s Make Room Capital Campaign Co-Chairs, Mike DeCola and Steve Pelch, are both past Board Chairs and served as Board Members. Even the Capital Campaign Committee is comprised of all

past Board Members – which is just awesome! Deb Vogt, past Board Chair, led the efforts for the organization to receive significant funding through New Market Tax Credits for the new House. Further, past Board Members lead all three of our special events. On our multiple Special Event Committees, you will find quite a few past Board Members leading the charge. Many even take the time to serve families at our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Every single past Board Member we approached for a capital gift said “yes.” I would say that with most nonprofits, when a person serves on the Board and their term is up, they move on to other things and maybe to a different organization. That’s not the case with Ronald McDonald House. These folks’ dedication, leadership, and commitment do not stop when their term ends on the board. A few years ago, one of our past Board Members made the following observation, and it is now my new favorite quote. “Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis is like Hotel California. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave,” he said respectfully and positively about his fellow Board Alumni. Of course, anyone can leave, but in our case, they don’t. It has been a true blessing to serve and experience so many outstanding and committed volunteers in the St. Louis Community. I am grateful to work with 16 “bosses” and 175 members to continue to serve families when they need it most. Always Grateful,

Dan Harbaugh RMHC St. Louis President & CEO

Increasingly more families travel to St. Louis seeking life-saving care at our worldclass pediatric hospitals. When life-saving medical care is far from home, affordable accommodations help improve access to treatment, support health and well-being, and alleviate some of the financial and emotional stress of a serious illness. The New Ronald McDonald House will be one of nearly 400 locations worldwide that help families stay close to their sick children when they need to heal.

“Rest. This is one of the ‘prescriptions’ we give parents while their child is in the hospital. Without it, they aren’t as effective in advocating for and participating in their child’s care, which is so important to their health and healing. Ronald McDonald House makes it possible for families to be close by and well-rested.” – Dr. Alexis Elward, a Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician and Chief Medical Officer at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

RMHC St. Louis is undertaking a $34 million campaign for the construction of a new 72-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis City. The House features an immunosuppressed wing with ten bedrooms, abundant community and family spaces and a commercial kitchen. In 2024, we will retire the aging buildings at the Park Avenue and West Pine locations. The West County Ronald McDonald House will remain fully functional. The added capacity of the new Ronald McDonald House will serve approximately 450 additional families each year - a 40% increase of capacity. We anticipate construction to be completed by summer of next year and to be fully moved in shortly after. If you haven't yet, we encourage you to drive by the new location at 4321 Chouteau Avenue, to see the continued progress of the build. The structure on the 2.6 acres at the corner of Chouteau and Tower Grove Avenues has already transformed into a point of interest in the neighborhood.

This summer, we held two elevator signings at the site for donors to leave their mark on the new House. Much like a traditional beam signing, our supporters signed the elevator well, an area of the House that will be discoverable in the future. They also posed with a yellow "I've visited the new Ronald McDonald House" poster and enjoyed a frozen treat. Special thank you to everyone who was able to join us. 14 years later, Charlotte's mom shares how RMHC helped during one of the scariest experiences of her daughter's life

MEET CHARLOTTE The Ronald McDonald Family Room comforted Charlotte’s family after her traumatic accident when she was three years old. In 2009, three-year-old Charlotte Hedgecorth was in her family’s home when she experienced a traumatic fall out of a secondary-story window that left her unconscious with a fractured skull. Utterly shocked and living a parent’s worst nightmare, Charlotte’s mom Becky rushed to her daughter’s side to get her immediate care. “I’ll never forget what it felt like running down those stairs, picturing the landscaping bricks we had just installed below the window and terrified that my baby girl might be dead. It was the scariest time of my life,” says Becky. The ambulance arrived quickly to transport little Charlotte to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Charles to evaluate her injuries. After thoughtfully examining Charlotte, doctors transported her to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. After running tests, doctors informed Becky and Charlotte’s dad Carlos that their daughter had

no brain damage but would need a temporary, dissolvable plate inserted in her skull and would fully recover after. “I think I breathed for the first time in hours when the surgeon explained my baby was going to be okay,” says Becky. "They also informed us that she was lucky the garden statue broke her fall because she may have taken the blunt force impact in her neck or spine." Charlotte’s family spent several days in the hospital before and after her Craniotomy surgery - leaving them exhausted and uncomfortable. “We spent days in waiting rooms trying to entertain our five and eight-year-old sons comfortably,” says Becky. “When we weren’t by Charlotte’s side, Carlos and I spent our nights in the waiting room, unable to rest amidst other families coming and going and hospital machines incessantly beeping.” After two restless nights camping in the small

waiting room, a nurse informed Becky and Carlos about the Ronald McDonald Family Room on the fifth floor. “We were amazed when we went in! A kind volunteer welcomed us and told us about all the comforts they had to offer. I was weeping with exhaustion and gratitude,” says Becky. Becky was familiar with Ronald McDonald House Charities by seeing the donation boxes inside local McDonald’s Restaurants. Still, she was unaware of the kind of hospitality families received while utilizing the space. “The Family Rooms provided snacks, games, toys for the boys to play with, and gifts to take to their sissy. They offered comfortable seats, a large sofa if we needed to nap, toothbrushes, and other toiletries. It was such a welcome respite from the cold waiting rooms,” says Becky. She explains further how lucky they were to have family members and the community unite to support Charlotte's recovery. “We needed each other, and everyone visited to help in any way. It felt like the whole world was rooting for Charlotte to get better,” says Becky. Charlotte is now 17 years old and has fully recovered, with only a small scar under her hair as a reminder of the accident. She and her family continue to support Ronald McDonald House Charities to show their gratitude for all the support they received during their family’s challenging experience. “My office started a new initiative with a mission to give away monthly donations to employee-nominated charities through the end of the year. It was an honor to nominate RMHC and present them with a $1,000 donation,” says Becky. Becky expresses how much Ronald McDonald House Charities enormously impacted her family. She says thinking back brings her to tears recalling how she got through that difficult time with the help and support of the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. ■

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MEGAN MURPHY SLU student creates meaningful moments of fun for guest families at the West Pine Ronald McDonald House. Megan Murphy is passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing health challenges. She is a medical assistant in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) and a sophomore at Saint Louis University (SLU). In her spare time, Megan volunteers at Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. “I was drawn to Ronald McDonald House Charities because of the significant impact the organization has on families and children during difficult times. Witnessing the support and care provided to families in need through RMHC left a strong impression on me,” Megan said. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House has been a part of Megan’s life for as long as she can remember. In elementary school, she was a Girl Scout, and often, her troop would come to volunteer for the House. As a freshman at St. Louis University, she joined the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, which has over a 40-year partnership with RMHC. The Alpha Delta Pi sorority started a We Believe Campaign, an RMHC Endowment established by the foundation. The endowment allows the sorority to support Houses that do not have an ADPI chapter nearby, new Houses being built, existing Houses being renovated, and Family Rooms that are being expanded and renovated. “After a breakfast event with my sorority at the West Pine House last fall, I fell in love with the atmosphere and the dedicated staff,” says Megan. “That’s when I decided to commit to volunteering on a regular basis.” Megan’s role at RMHC St. Louis has evolved. She started as a meal preparer, then transitioned to a weekly house cleaner, and now she oversees weekly activity day at our West Pine Ronald McDonald House for guest families.

“The more time I spent with the families and children, I discovered my true passion and decided that what I really wanted to do was organize and participate in weekly activities, providing opportunities to engage with the families and create enjoyable experiences for them,” Megan said. Her weekly activities range from bouncy houses, Kona Ice, the bubble bus, movie nights, arts and crafts, and game nights. “When I plan activities for the families, it’s a fun and collaborative process. It starts with assessing the interest and needs of the children and families we serve while ensuring that our activities are engaging and accessible to all,” Megan said. Megan encourages those in the community to volunteer for RMHC St. Louis because the experience is rewarding. She expresses how the opportunity can create meaningful moments for the families and children who rely on RMHC St. Louis support. “The staff at RMHC is unfailingly appreciative of any interest in helping, whether it's on a monthly, biweekly, or even weekly basis. Your unique talents and abilities, regardless of your professional background, can be put to good use here,” Megan said. ■

The Benson Family

Keeping Families Close WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST In January 2023, the Benson family left their home in Iowa for 14-yearold Karlee to receive treatment in St. Louis for anorexia. Having a child in the hospital is difficult, but having the best care for them over six hours from home adds more stress. Karlee entered McCallum Place severely malnourished. On January 9, she was 5ft 7in and only weighed 107 pounds. Her lowest weight was 104 pounds over Christmas break. Their family needed somewhere to be close to totally focus on Karlee’s treatment and rehabilitation. Ronald McDonald House was their refuge. “We’ve had major blessings and Ronald McDonald House is one of the major blessings,” says Mandi, Karlee’s mom. By taking away some of the hardships of balancing an illness, families can focus on what matters most - their child. “Ronald McDonald House is open for everyone,” says Mandi. “This is The House that Love Built.” Scan the QR code to donate now.

HOME AWAY 2023 Appeal

FROM HOME YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS The Home Away from Home Appeal provides the financial foundation for the annual operation of our three Ronald McDonald Houses and four Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. The actual cost of a family’s one-night stay at the Ronald McDonald House is $125; however, we ask families to contribute just a small fraction of that amount. Due to mounting medical bills and other uninsured living expenses, 70% cannot afford even this contribution - but no family is ever turned away if they are unable to pay. Your gift will help us continue to serve children and their families. To make a contribution to the 2023 Home Away from Home Appeal, please use the donation envelope attached to this newsletter. To make a gift online, visit us at rmhcstl.com/homeawayfromhome. Those who give $1,000 or more will become members of our .

DONNY FANDANGO'S FINAL 28-HOUR RADIOTHON In June, Donny Fandango hosted his 13th Annual and final 28-Hour Radiothon on 105.7 The Point. With the community's help calling in for song requests, on-air business plugs, and shoutouts, the fundraiser ended with a record-breaking total of $93,321. Raising his multi-year total to over $550,000 for RMHC St. Louis! "I am incredibly thankful to our listeners for making this a HUGE deal! The outpouring of support and donations every single year is something that I'm so grateful for, especially these past ten years benefitting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. This organization has become near and dear to my heart." Donny Fandango is an on-air host hosting the midday show from 10 am-2 pm weekdays on 105.7 The Point, a St. Louis, Missouri rock radio station. Donny has been a DJ on “The Point” for over 20 years – and besides hosting his popular weekday show – he also hosts “New Music Sundays” on Sunday evenings, focusing on new music and artists worldwide. Donny has been a friend of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis for over a decade. During those years, he has supported the charity by hosting an annual “28-Hour Radiothon” fundraiser for families who utilize the services at our St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms while their child seeks treatment at a local pediatric hospital. Instead of his usual four-hour show, Donny has stayed live each year, broadcasting for 28 straight hours in-studio! "I've been given this platform, and I feel like if I didn't do something good with it, then what good is it to have the platform," Donny says. Donny expresses that he first got involved with

RMHC 12 years ago when he visited the West Pine Ronald McDonald House. "From the moment that I walked in, it was incredibly apparent to me that those parents were going through something that I had never gone through as a parent," Donny says. "They were dealing with things that I could not fathom, and I could see that in their faces." From that point forward, he put himself in the parents' shoes. As a parent himself, he shares he has so much empathy for the parents dealing with the realities of a sick child. "At the end of the day, I want to do things that make my wife, my kiddos, and my parents proud of me," Donny says. Donny expresses that he couldn't have done it without his co-workers at 105.7 The Point and the help of Ronald McDonald House Charities staff and volunteers. Each year, they assist Donny with answering calls and keeping him company as he stays up for 28 hours. This year was Donny's last year hosting the Radiothon, but he says he looks forward to figuring out another way to continue to support families of seriously ill children. At RMHC, we are incredibly grateful to have such an outstanding friend of the House like Donny. Over the years, we've honored Donny for his continued support to serving families by dedicating a bench in his honor at our West County Ronald McDonald House and during the 2022 Cornerstone Society Celebration. Special thank you to Donny, the entire team at The Point, volunteers and the community for such outstanding events. ■ Heartbeat • Fall/Winter 2023

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: RYAN MIDDLETON

eoria, Illinois, native Ryan Middleton moved to St. Louis in 2000 to work as a grounds keeper for the St. Louis Cardinals and as a video editor for the St. Louis Rams while attending night school at Washington University. With an already busy schedule, Ryan quickly connected with Ronald McDonald House Charities volunteers and got involved with the Kids & Clays Tournament and Dinner Auction committee, where he combined his love of the outdoors with giving back to the community. As a committee member, Ryan passionately served as the Silent Auction Chair for the Dinner Auction and supported day-of logistics during the tournament. “Every experience I’ve had with the charity has been special. I am so appreciative of the connections I made during my time at RMH with close friends and mentors like Phil Brown and Dan Harbaugh,” says Ryan. “After graduating from Washington University in 2008, I applied for a position at World Wide Technology, and I’m thankful my friends at RMHC put in a good word for me. I’ve been with the company since.” After multiple promotions at World Wide Technology, Ryan moved to Seattle, Washington, for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with his wife, Chrissy, to pursue an outside sales position. Sadly, they had to say, “See you later” to their second

family at Ronald McDonald House. Ryan and Chrissy have enjoyed the West Coast raising their children, Colton and Evelyn, for the past ten years. Wanting to reconnect with his favorite charity, this year Ryan flew to St. Louis to join us for the 23rd Annual Kids & Clays Tournament at NILO Farms in August. “There were so many familiar faces at the tournament. I look forward to creating more memories with my kids as we get involved again to teach them about the misson” says Ryan. “For me, it’s all about the people, and I’m blessed to know friends who want to raise money to support families going through difficult times.” At Ronald McDonald House Charities, we are grateful to Ryan for his years of service, for reconnecting with us, and for involving his family in support of our mission. He is truly an example of what makes our volunteers so special. If you are considering donating your time or talents, we leave you with these words of encouragement from Ryan: “It’s a great group of people and a great cause. It doesn’t matter the amount of time or the amount of money you donate or can raise. You will have an impact if it’s an hour a year or an hour a month. Start small. Take it from me: the more you get involved, the more you’ll want to stay around.” ■

MEET JIMMY WILLIAMS A McDonald's Owner/Operator who lives his life to serve others. As a teenager, Jimmy began serving at the front counter in a McDonald’s restaurant in Granite City, Illinois. His experience at McDonald’s taught him the value of hard work and laid a foundation of experiences that would one day lead him to opportunities he could not have imagined at the time. Jimmy credits his earliest mentor, Dr. Ben Davis, for guiding him along his journey to becoming a McDonald's Owner/Operator. After graduating from McDonald’s Hamburger University, Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a pilot. His military experience lit a passion for teamwork and mentorship. In 1996, several St. Louis business people who learned about Jimmy’s desire to own a franchise helped him join the McDonald’s training program. Two years later, Jimmy owned the same McDonald’s in Granite City, where he used to work the front counter. Since then, his franchise has grown to 25 stores in Missouri and Illinois with over 1,500 employees. “The Granite City restaurant is much more than a place to eat. It represents a hub of the community, a place where people not only get a cup of coffee, but they take the time to see each other and say hello to one another,” says Jimmy. Jimmy continues his service to the overall bi-state area through his involvement in Ronald

McDonald House Charities of St. Louis and other community boards. He and his wife, Janet, have been involved with RMHC for 20 years through various roles on committees and the Board of Directors, including the Let’s Make Room Capital Campaign Committee for the new St. Louis City Ronald McDonald House. Jimmy has also worked to implement Round-Up in his stores, encouraging customers and crew members to support RMHC. “Raising awareness about the need for RMHC is one of my favorite parts of the RMHC family. When people understand the importance of the mission, they want to give. They want to support families with seriously ill children who need a temporary place to stay. I’m proud to be a part of this effort,” says Jimmy. “Our crews say that they understand the purpose of their efforts through the Round-up program. Their efforts mean more families can be helped!” From his outstanding leadership effort, Jimmy received the Fred L. Turner Golden Arch Award, named after the person who, along with Ray Kroc, grew McDonald’s from a small chain of restaurants into today’s global brand. The award is presented biennially to the top 1% of owners/operators globally who place customers and people first, lead with integrity, promote

inclusion, and passionately give back to the community. “This award is such an honor. Once again, I’m thankful for mentors who gave their time and guidance along my journey. I’m grateful for that spirit of generosity. Whether it’s spending time with youth in the Metro area or giving advice to first-time entrepreneurs, I enjoy passing along lessons I’ve learned over the years and listening to the stories of those I mentor,” says Jimmy. “The award also affirms the importance of teamwork and another key strategy: putting customers first!” We are grateful to have such outstanding

leadership in the RMHC family through Jimmy. He continues to invest in his crew, the next generation of entrepreneurs, his community, and the families served at the Ronald McDonald House. We believe Janet summed it up perfectly: “When you think about the mission of RMHC, it’s enough to make you want to get involved. To see the smiles on the faces of parents and their children and to know that we’ve made a difference. It’s what we would want for our own families.” ■

NEW FACES

Meet the newest staff members of RMHC St. Louis! MATT BORCHARDT

is thrilled to join the RMHC staff as the new Chef. Matt has a long tenure of working in the St. Louis region as a chef and just recently sold his restaurant to join the RMHC staff. Matt, his wife, and two teenage sons enjoy spending their free time camping, dining out, and relaxing in their backyard.

SUSAN PECK

She enjoys spending time with family, singing, and playing the piano

CHANDRA PIPER

is happy to join RMHC as the Human Resources Assistant after spending eight years as a career counselor at SLU and two years working with a healthcare consulting company in their Human Resources Departments. Outside of work, Chandra enjoys making memories with her family, baking cookies, and being active.

MEET JOE NONNENKAMP Remembering a founding Red Shoe Society member and his impact on Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. In May 2023, the unexpected passing of Joe Nonnenkamp left our hearts heavy for his family, friends, coworkers, and extended RMHC family. Joe was integral in establishing the young friends’ group, now known as Red Shoe Society, in 2012. He was an incredibly selfless person who never hesitated to help the group no matter how big or small the task, whether it was securing silent auction items for Wintoberfest or Par-Tee for the House, setting up tables and tents before events, or cooking a meal for families staying at one of the local Ronald McDonald Houses. Just three days before his passing, he was preparing a meal for guest families at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House. “We lost Joe Nonnenkamp, a great friend and longtime Red Shoe member, a few months ago. Joe was the epitome of what a Red Shoe member should be - he was a founding member, came to every Red Shoe event, volunteered in any way possible, held leadership positions, and was a welcoming, friendly face to new members. Several longtime members became affiliated with Red Shoe thanks to their friendship with Joe, and we miss him dearly every day,” says current RSS president Phil Saettele. The legacy Joe leaves to Red Shoe is truly 27

Heartbeat • Fall/Winter 2023

immeasurable. “To honor his commitment, we established the Joe Nonnenkamp Service Award to ensure that his memory and legacy live on, and it will be presented every year to a Red Shoe member who exemplifies Joe's character and his passion for RMHC and Red Shoe,” says Phil. “This September, we presented the beautiful glass award to his family during the annual Red Shoe Society and Board of Directors Happy Hour event.” This part of the obituary moved us, and we want to share it with you: “To know Joe was to love him. He was a sweet, warm soul who truly loved his family and friends. He will be remembered for his outgoing and welcoming personality, thoughtfulness and generosity, love of music, and sense of humor.” ■

Notes from Red Shoe Friends: "Joe loved four things in his life: St. Louis sports, Billy Joel, his family and Ronald McDonald House Charities Red Shoe Society," says Ryan Kuryla. "Goodbyes are never easy. Joe was truly one of a kind and will leave a lasting impression on me. I will forever be grateful to him for getting me to join Red Shoe Society," says Emily Westerholt.

"Joe was so easy to talk to, always offering bits of knowledge I didn't know I needed (our trivia ranger) and always the one to be there if someone was needed. He was amazing, kind, thoughtful, generous person," says Maggie Mars.

"I walked into my first meeting, and the first person I saw was Joe. I knew then I was in the right place. To me, Joe embodied all Red Shoe represents. He inspired others to join Red Shoe or any social function and was proud to represent the organization. If anyone is ever unsure whether they should volunteer or participate, live by Joe’s example. Just show up and you will have found friends and family for life. He is missed every day," says Lauren Hieger.

MEET JANET AND ROGER THOMAS Caring Hearts Legacy Circle members leave a legacy of love for seriously ill children and their families. “My goal in life is to help others, especially children,” says Roger Thomas. When Roger was a kid, he was diagnosed with Tetanus, or Lockjaw, and was hospitalized for three months under strict guidelines, leaving him alone without his parents. His family would come and visit him, but at that time, Ronald McDonald House didn’t exist, and there was not a close place for them to be near him. “Back then, only one in a million children survived. I believed I lived for a reason, and now I want to give back,” says Roger. Fueled by their passion for giving back, Roger and his wife Janet have volunteered at Ronald McDonald House for over a decade, helping provide the comforts of home and spreading awareness for the organization. Their journey started during a Meals from the Heart dinner with La-Z-Boy Furniture in 2009. They were hooked after the evening of serving food and visiting with the families. Roger and Janet stayed involved by providing dinners, promoting the Tab Top program in their local community, and, most recently, becoming Caring Hearts Legacy Circle members. “We have made tab collection houses, cooked meals, and built yard toys for the annual Tab Top Pandemonium event. I also built two new large tab houses for Belleville West High School this 29

year,” says Roger. “We have connected with so many families at the houses, and they have shared their lives with my wife and me. We have so many wonderful memories of the people we have met throughout the years. It’s just amazing.” Roger and Janet shared that leaving a legacy with Ronald McDonald House Charities with a gift through their estate will allow them to continue the work they are doing for families of seriously ill children beyond their lifetime. “We want to leave a legacy for our family, and the Ronald McDonald House has become part of our family,” says Janet. “We want our impact to continue, even when we aren’t around to do the work ourselves.” We are beyond grateful to have friends like Roger and Janet, who continue to give back to the thousands of families today and in the future with a planned gift. This summer, they stopped at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House to pick up their engraved hand-blown Caring Hearts Legacy Circle house and see its twin that is proudly displayed on the beautiful blue donor wall.
