St. Louis ANNUAL REPORT 20 22

OUR MISSION

To provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children seeking medical treatment in a St. Louis-area hospital.

CORE PROGRAMS

One of the worst things that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, life stops overnight and the world is full of worry and fear.

For many of these families, there is an added stress: distance. Sometimes the best medical care available is hundreds of miles - or more - from home. In addition, families face the financial demands of mounting medical bills, job insecurity and a healing journey that can take months or even years.

This is why Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms exist: to keep families close to their seriously ill children.

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE®

• Three Houses and eight extended-stay apartments in St. Louis serve as a home-away-from-home for 48 families of seriously ill children each night

• Provides the comforts of home to more than 500 families in a typical year including private bedrooms, home-cooked meals, comfortable living areas, a kitchen and laundry facilities

• Open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year

RONALD McDONALD FAMILY ROOM®

• Four St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Rooms serve as an oasis inside Mercy Children’s Hospital (2), St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and SSM Health

Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital

• Provides comfort and care to thousands of families annually - that's over 20,000+ visitors

• Each Family Room is equipped with a kitchen area, complimentary snacks and coffee, showers, laundry facilities, Internet and TV

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

In a review of 2022, the list of accomplishments at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis is truly remarkable. In what can now be described as the “endemic” year, all our fundraising and appreciation events returned closer to their typical pre-pandemic candence, and annual giving was stronger than ever. Total revenue from our core programs totaled $4.1M, surpassing our annual budget. Significantly contributing to these results, the Round-Up for RMHC Program drove $2.3M in revenue to the charity, a record-setting amount. The efforts of our McDonald’s owneroperators and crews have been incredible, and the money they have raised continues to lead all other markets in the U.S. by a wide margin. After expenses, we were able to add almost $1 million more to the charity’s reserves in 2022. What an outstanding year!

All these financial resources support our mission of providing a “home-away-from-home” and a place of respite for our families with sick children. We are proud to have served 524 families in our three Ronald McDonald Houses and 22,281 visitors in our four Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in 2022.

Unfortunately, many more families need us, and we worked hard in 2022 to expand our services. Partnered with pediatric hospitals in St. Louis, which have earned the reputation for being best-in-class, the demand for our services grows. As such, we opened our fourth Family Room, this one located in Mercy Hospital, in September to serve NICU families. Additionally, our capital campaign to build a new 72-bedroom house in the city continued with vigor all year. This House will more than double our bedroom capacity in the city, allowing us to chip away at the long waitlist of families needing our support. We are happy to report that to date we have raised $29 million toward our revised $34M goal. In early December, we officially broke ground on this new facility and are projecting an opening in the summer of 2024.

The accomplishments of 2022 are due to ALL of YOU – our donors, volunteers, staff, board, committee members, owner-operators, and hospital partners. We are so fortunate for all your hard work, support, and contributions. Please take pride in your achievements as you review this annual report. I am honored to have served the last two years as Board Chair of this incredible organization.

THE VISION FOR OUR FUTURE

On December 2, 2022, we broke ground on the new Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis! As the need for this space continues to grow, we look forward to our charity’s beautiful expansion. The new House will have 72 bedrooms, large dining areas, an industrial kitchen and chef, a rooftop patio, private bathrooms, laundry facilities, and more.

The new location will be equidistant from St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital while adjacent to Shriners Hospital for Children – St. Louis. This will continue to keep families close to the local pediatric facilities to access their child’s care.

Through the end of 2022, over $25 million was secured for the campaign through the support of our generous community. We are so grateful for the generosity of the individuals, corporations, and foundations that have stepped up to support guest families.

MEET THE GEEN FAMILY

Ollie’s parents found comfort in the Ronald McDonald Family Room.

On October 25, 2021, Jennifer and Brian Geen heard the devastating news that two-year-old Ollie was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer that affects about 1 in 1 million children. Ollie was taken to the Emergency Room, leading the family to the Oncology Department at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. His medical team found a six-inch tumor in a position where it may not be able to be removed.

A week after his diagnosis, little Ollie began his first round of in-patient chemotherapy for twelve weeks. That led the Geen family to spend many nights within the hospital walls. Jennifer and Brian couldn’t imagine leaving their son’s side, even with their home only 15 minutes away in Sunset Hills, Missouri. Thankfully, the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the hospital provided comfort and care when they needed it most.

“It was a place to decompress,” explains Jennifer. “The Family Room was the only quiet space we could find from the loud machines, noises, and distractions. We found both mental and physical comfort in the space.”

After a high-risk seven-hour surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Jennifer and Brian learned that Ollie’s tumor had shrunk to almost half the original size from his treatment and was successfully removed.

The Geen family celebrated by ringing the bell at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital together after 156 days of treatment. Shortly after, scans confirmed that three-year-old Ollie was in remission.

“If not for the support of the Ronald McDonald Family Room, the whole situation would have been even more difficult. We are so grateful to be able to use these support services,” says Jennifer.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

What an awesome year 2022 was for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis!

As we continued to raise funds for a new 72-bedroom House, we hit our goal of $24 million to break ground in October. On December 2nd, we held a wonderful, groundbreaking event attended by over 300 friends, donors, and volunteers. We will continue to raise funds until we hit our goal of $34 million.

In 2023, the St. Louis community united to lead the country in Rounding-Up for RMHC at McDonald’s stores. RoundUp generated $2.3 million dollars (the next most generous market only raised $750,000), showing once again St. Louisans and our surrounding communities are extremely generous. Because of Round-Up, we were able to give the West County House a much-needed kitchen update. We also gave a complete makeover to the Family Room at Mercy (we had done the same for our Family Rooms at Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s Hospitals in 2021). We are so thankful to our local McDonald’s Owners/Operators and their supportive crewmembers.

As we moved another year past the pandemic, things returned to normal. Our events were all back to prepandemic performance, with events selling out and raising much-needed funds for operations. More and more groups returned to provide families with dinners through the Meals from the Heart program. And while some of our volunteers decided to retire after the long break, many others have returned, and new volunteers have joined the ranks.

Thanks for helping Ronald McDonald House Charities have a tremendous 2022.

Sincerely,

RMHC ST. LOUIS STAFF
