Letter from thE chairperson It’s hard to believe I am halfway through my term as the Board Chair for this amazing organization. And what a great 12 months it has been! Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis continues to grow and thrive due to incredible staff, donors and volunteers.

Over the past year, I have sat in on numerous committee meetings and attended our marvelous events, meeting and talking to so many people who touch the House in one way or another.

Each individual has a story about what initially connected him or her to the House, but each and every one of them continue to come back due to our great mission and the wonderful people who are involved.

Spring is such a great time, as we are afforded the opportunity to thank our major donors and volunteers, via our Cornerstone and Volunteer Appreciation Events.

The Cornerstone Society has experienced tremendous

growth since its inception in 2012, having increased from 220 members in 2012 to more than 410 in 2015, and whose total annual contributions have grown from $600,000 to more than $1.4 million.

As I look to the remainder of the year and my term as Board Chair, I am excited to see the reopening of our Park Avenue House, which has gone through a makeover this spring, as it celebrated 20 years this April.

In addition, this July RMHC of St. Louis is celebrating its 35th Anniversary of serving families in St. Louis. We plan to celebrate this remarkable milestone at our events throughout the summer.

Thank you to our staff, donors and volunteers for making my role so fun. Interacting with all of you and helping to carry out our mission of being a home-awayfrom-home is extremely fulfilling. I sometimes think this organization gives back to each of us more than each of us can possibly give to the organization.

Celebrating 35 Years!

2016 marks the 35th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis In July of 1981, our first Ronald McDonald House opened on West Pine Boulevard as an eight-bedroom home. Since that time, we have grown to include three Houses and eight long-term apartments, all of which provide a home-away-from-home to 59 families each night. We have also added three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, located inside St. Louis-area pediatric medical centers. In 2013, RMHC partnered with Eye Care Charity of Mid-America to operate the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a mobile vision clinic that delivers onthe-spot eye exams and free eyeglasses to children in need.

We have a lot to celebrate here at RMHC St. Louis. Most of all, we want to celebrate the St. Louis community for its generosity and support over the past 35 years. We couldn’t have done it without you! meet the jokic family five-year-old lana jokic and her family found comfort and care thousands of miles from home

W

hen a family from Sasa Jaramaz’s home country of Serbia was in need of a home-away-fromhome, the Director of Operations of The RitzCarlton, St. Louis knew exactly who to call.

For more than 17 years, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis has been helping Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis provide families of seriously ill children with a place to call “home.” Whether it is raising money through a Christmas gingerbread 3 Heartbeat • Spring/Summer 2016

archway fundraiser, supporting the annual Ronald McDonald House golf event or providing muchneeded household items, The Ritz-Carlton has always stepped up when RMHC St. Louis needed it most.

That’s why, when introduced to the 5-year-old Lana Jokic and her parents, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis was quick to help.

Born several weeks early in Sabac, Serbia, Lana suffers from cerebral palsy and asthma. Because the

care Lana needs is not available in her hometown, her family is often required to seek treatment far from home. At just four years old, with the financial support of their community, Lana and her family traveled to St. Louis for the first time where she underwent two major surgeries at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. During this time, Lana’s parents, Sandra and Marko, stayed at a nearby hotel. Over the next two and a half months, Lana’s condition improved immensely, and the Jokic family eventually returned to their home in Serbia.

Several months later, Lana was in need of follow-up treatment and therapy. However, her parents were unsure of how they would afford a second trip to St. Louis. That’s when Sasa from The Ritz-Carlton reached out to his friends at the Ronald McDonald House.

With the help of a special donor, RMHC St. Louis was able to help the Jokic family fly from their home in Serbia to the United States. Once they arrived in St. Louis, Lana and her parents settled into the Ronald McDonald House, where they found the same comforts of home that, with the support of The Ritz-Carlton, countless other families have found.

“Staying here has been wonderful,” says Lana’s mom, Sandra.

“They call this a home-awayfrom-home, but, for us, it’s so much more than that,” says Lana’s dad, Marko.

At Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, we couldn’t be more grateful for the outstanding partnership and support of The RitzCarlton, St. Louis. Together, we can help many more families, like Lana’s, find comfort, care and a home-awayfrom-home at a time when they need it most.

The Massoni Family

M

ichael Massoni is a lovable one-year-old from the St. Louis suburb of Maryland Heights. Today, this little guy is happy and healthy, but this time last year, he was fighting for his life.

Shortly after he was born, Michael was diagnosed with an intestinal disorder called Hirschsprung’s Disease after he was struggling to eat and experiencing digestion problems.

As a result, he spent a month at Mercy Children’s Hospital last spring and has since endured five surgeries.

During one of the most terrifying times of their lives, Michael’s parents, Andy and Jennifer, relied on our inhospital Ronald McDonald Family Room to stay by their son’s side. It helped ease their financial burden, saving them trips to and from home and providing much-needed pick-me-ups like coffee and snacks. More importantly, it gave them a place to spend time with their daughter, Sophia, that was just steps away from Michael’s room.

“The Family Room helped us feel normal, even if it was for 10 minutes,” says Jennifer.

To celebrate Michael’s first birthday, the Massoni family collected wish list items for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis in lieu of gifts.

“It seemed like the right thing to do,” says Jennifer. “We don’t need gifts; all we need is him.” ■

volunteer spotlight kathryn and beth make their volunteer hours count in the ronald mcdonald family room

F

or nearly eight years, Kathryn Quigley and Beth Juergens have been making the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital feel like “home.”

Each month, Kathryn and Beth cover the same shift in the Family Room, where together they help provide comfort and care for countless families of seriously ill children. Whether it’s baking cookies, bringing fresh fruit or helping a family with their laundry, Kathryn and Beth are always willing to go the extra mile to make it easier for families to focus on what is most important – helping their child heal.

“These families are in need of something that looks like home,” says Beth. “If we can make a difference in one family’s experience, it’s worth it,” she says.

Kathryn and Beth are also supporting the RMHC mission by participating in the Dollars for Doers

program, a program in which volunteers’ employers offer financial contributions to organizations where volunteer service is completed.

Kathryn is an Account Administrator at J.W. Terrill, a Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC company. In an effort to better connect its employees with the community, J.W. Terrill provides organizations with grants for volunteer hours completed by its employees. Each year the company presents RMHC St. Louis with a grant for the volunteer hours completed by Kathryn.

Like Kathryn, Beth is also encouraged by her company, HealthLink, Inc., a subsidiary of Anthem, Inc., to support RMHC St. Louis. As a signature charity of the company’s Dollars for Doers program, RMHC St. Louis receives a donation that is double the amount received by standard 501(c)3 charities for volunteer hours completed by its employees.

In addition to providing donations for volunteer hours, both J.W. Terrill and Anthem, Inc. sponsor RMHC St. Louis’ special events throughout the year, further demonstrating their commitment to the causes close to their employees’ hearts.

“It means a lot to me that my company supports me and the cause that I am interested in,” says Kathryn.

“It’s great knowing we are adding that extra layer of support when we volunteer,” says Beth.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the dedication of Kathryn and Beth, as well as J.W. Terrill and HealthLink, Inc., to the RMHC mission. Thank you for making the Ronald McDonald Family Room a true home-away-from-home.

meet frankie a lovable new therapy dog delivers comfort and care to rmhc families

M

eet Frankie, our Chief Pawsitivity Officer, who spends her days providing comfort to seriously ill children and their families here at the Ronald McDonald House. She is an Australian Labradoodle and specially trained therapy dog. In addition to knowing between 30-40 commands, she can brighten a child’s day or ease a parent’s stress by offering a hug, a wag of the tail, or a

long cuddle. Frankie also brings a bit of normalcy to the families who miss their own pets after staying at the RMH for several weeks or months at a time.

Frankie was provided to RMHC St. Louis by an anonymous donor, who also sponsored her training at Ultimate Canine in West Field, Indiana. Ultimate Canine has also trained therapy dogs for the RMHC chapters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Savannah, Georgia. Frankie worked with her trainer, Jessica Benz, for six months before coming to St. Louis.

“She loves kids, which is perfect for the Ronald McDonald House,” says Jessica. “She has a great working drive, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the kids for her.”

Because she is an Australian Labradoodle, Frankie does not shed and is hypoallergenic, so even children with pet allergies or suppressed immune systems can enjoy her company. Frankie is currently at the West County Ronald McDonald House Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. She also travels to the other two St. Louis-area RMH locations and will soon begin visiting our three in-hospital Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.

welcome to the board greg diekemper Greg, a life-long St. Louisan and CPA, spent the majority of his career at Swank Audio Visuals, where he eventually served as President and CEO until the Swank family sold the business to a private equity firm. After heading up the 2013 merger of Swank Audio Visuals with its largest competitor, Greg rejoined Swank Motion Pictures as President and COO. After successfully completing several initiatives, he semi-retired in 2015.

Today, Greg is an independent advisor to family-owned and privately held businesses.

He also serves on the board of three family-owned/privately held businesses. Greg and his wife, Rita, have three children and two grandchildren. They have been supporting RMHC for many years, especially through Rita’s business, Gardens of Grace, LLC.

bridget hoy Bridget earned her law degree at Saint Louis University and is a Partner at Lewis Rice LLC, representing companies and individuals both as plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of litigation disputes. She previously served two years in the federal court in St. Louis as a judicial law clerk and also in the United States Air Force as an enlisted member for over six years. Bridget and her late husband, Patrick, made St. Louis their home in 1998, after living in Maine, the Azores Islands of Portugal, and Mississippi as part of their Air Force duties. Although she returns to her hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin regularly, Bridget seeks every opportunity to enjoy all that St. Louis has to offer with her two children, Perry and Paige.

alicia jett Alicia began her career at CBIZ Human Capital Services, where she served as Manager, Compensation Consulting. In 2010, Alicia took her skills to RockTenn Corporation (later known as West Rock) serving as Manager, Compensation in St. Louis and later Atlanta. In 2014, Alicia joined SunEdison as the Senior Manager, Compensation and HRIS. Alicia has taken on many roles within the company, such as launching new software, creating a training guide for the system, and travelling globally to train HR teams on how to use the system.

Alicia also enjoys volunteering for a number of charitable and civic causes in the St. Louis community. In addition to serving on the RMHC St. Louis Board of Directors, she is a Council Member for the Local Network Leadership Council of National WorldatWork.

why i give The Tax Advantages of Charitable Gift Annuities “If you have the means, charitable gift annuities are one of the best investments out there,” says Lou. “And being able to help a charity is great, too.”

Lou, who is both humble and gracious, knows the value of giving back. He spends two to three days a week volunteering, and many organizations throughout the St. Louis area, especially RMHC, are extremely grateful for his support.

In 2014, Lou was awarded our Outstanding Individual Cornerstone Society Award for his generosity and dedication to our mission. Lou also supports our organization through the Rose Russo fund, a planned gift made by Lou in memory of his mother. ■

or almost 30 years, Lou Russo has been supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

Lou’s relationship with RMHC began in the 1980s, when he began looking into ways for his mother, Rose, to decrease her taxes through charitable giving. Rose enjoyed supporting the Ronald McDonald House, and that’s when Lou discovered the tax advantages of investing in a charitable gift annuity with RMHC. It wasn’t long before Lou decided to expand his support through a charitable gift annuity of his own. It became an especially viable option when interest rates on CDs dropped. Best of all, according to Lou, it helped offset the increased taxes he owed due to being a single man with an excellent job at Ameren.

or nearly three years, RMHC St. Louis has partnered with Eye Care Charity of Mid‐ America to operate the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. This mobile vision clinic travels to schools and social service agencies throughout the St. Louis area and beyond, delivering comprehensive eye exams and on‐ the‐spot prescription glasses free of charge to underprivileged children. In addition to correcting their vision, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile empowers children to succeed in the classroom and enables early diagnosis of other eye conditions. The gift of technology In 2015, RMHC St. Louis was fortunate to be chosen as the Illinois Rental Dealer’s Association (IRDA) Charity of Choice. Led by RMHC St. Louis volunteer, Larry Carrico, the association raised an amazing $8,600!

The generous donation from the IRDA was used to purchase new technology for the West Pine Conference Room, which hosts committee meetings, board meetings, volunteer orientations and other important RMHC events. However, prior to the updates, meetings required a large amount of printed materials due to a lack of up-to-date technology.

With the help of the IRDA, both audio and visual updates were made through the purchase of a computer system, two Smart TVs and an interactive whiteboard. A podium to house the room’s computer system was also purchased. These crucial updates have improved the efficiency and capability of the room, reducing time spent preparing for meetings as well as paper costs.

2015 heart & sole award c.s.i. leasing awarded for its commitment to the rmhc mission

In December 2015, RMHC St. Louis presented

C.S.I. Leasing, an equipment leasing company, with the Heart and Sole Award. C.S.I. Leasing has been supporting the RMHC mission for more than 20 years.

The Heart and Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of its

more than 20-year commitment to RMHC St. Louis. Each year, our organization honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker Gundaker’s long-term commitment and generosity.

Throughout the years, C.S.I. Leasing has held fundraisers and many other in-office promotions to support RMHC. Most notable is their Jeans Day, which gives employees the opportunity to make a donation to RMHC in exchange for dressing down. In addition, for over 10 years, C.S.I. Leasing employees have been preparing meals for our guest families, holding wish list drives, and participating at service work days at our West Pine House.

C.S.I. Leasing has also supported the McDonald’s Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament every year that they have been involved with the House.

In total, C.S.I.’s fundraising efforts have raised more than $250,000 for our organization.

a legacy of giving back jeremy morales is remembered for his passion for helping others

J

eremy Morales dedicated his life to helping others, even during times when he needed help himself.

Diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 8, Jeremy spent a lot of time as a patient at Barnes Jewish Hospital. At the age of 29 he underwent a pancreas and kidney transplant. Unfortunately, just a short time later, Jeremy lost the pancreas and eventually the kidney. However, after undergoing regular dialysis treatments for three years, Jeremy’s mom, Karen, was able to give him a new kidney in 2013.

During his hospital stays, Jeremy always took the time to visit with kids and their families at the neighboring St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It was during these visits that Jeremy was inspired to give back even more and become involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

As a Marketing Specialist at Coldwell Banker Gundaker, a major supporter and partner of RMHC St. Louis for more than 30 years, Jeremy’s mom, Karen, was already involved with our organization. Together, Jeremy, his mom and his sister, Niki, began raising money and awareness for RMHC St. Louis.

Jeremy and Niki would attend fundraising events held by Coldwell Banker Gundaker, where Jeremy would serve as the emcee. He also became an active participant in the RMHC St. Louis Tab Top Program, an aluminum recycling program that raises nearly $30,000 for our organization each year.

Passionate about supporting RMHC St. Louis, Jeremy became known for collecting tab tops everywhere he went, even asking strangers to donate their tabs.

“He was all about the idea that you don’t have to have money to help,” says Jeremy’s mom, Karen.

Sadly, Jeremy passed away in December 2015, but his legacy of giving back continues. Knowing how important the organization was to him, Jeremy’s family and friends made donations to RMHC St. Louis and continue to collect tab tops in his memory.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the support and dedication of Jeremy and his family to the RMHC St. Louis mission. His legacy of giving back continues to impact the lives of those who call our Houses “home.” ■

Rory Barnawell, whose family called RMHC “home” for over a year, asked for donations to stock our pantry for her birthday instead of gifts.
