When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House?

We started providing meals with the Family Dinner Program at the Mercy House in February of 2013, just a few months after the Mercy House opened. The first time the Mercy Imaging Department served, the management staff all served together. The Imaging Department is too large to all serve together now so Kara Denney helps coordinate different groups from within the department to serve meals each month.

How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program?

When the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy opened in November 2012, we heard about the opportunity to serve and started making plans to get our group engaged!

Do you have any favorite memories?

We really enjoy volunteering with this program because of the camaraderie with the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. It also gives the Mercy Imaging department a chance to meet up and do something fun together!

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program?

I would say to do it! It is a lot of fun serving for the families, and you won’t regret it.

RMHC Fall Volunteer Outing The Annual RMHC Fall Volunteer outing will be held on Friday October 14th at Rutledge Wilson Farm Park from 6 pm – 8 pm. Come and enjoy a campfire, food, hayrides, and a haunted trail while enjoying quality time with volunteers from the Houses and Tooth Truck!

Cassie Franklin

We are excited to welcome Cassie Franklin to our Assistant Manager team at the House near Cox South! Cassie is a student at Missouri State University and will graduate with a degree in Child and Family Development with an emphasis in Child Life. She has a passion for kids and has been working at the Salvation Army After School Program for three years. When she has free time she loves to read, binge watch Netflix, and enjoy the outdoors. In July, she went to South Africa for a month to complete a practicum in Child Life. We welcome your talents, compassion and skills in our RMHC family, Cassie!

Volunteer Spotlight Victoria Kubitschek

Victoria Kubitschek is 15 years old and a sophomore at Parkview High School. She is active at her school with cheerleading, colorguard, and theater. She has been volunteering for Ronald McDonald House since November 2015. Fun fact: in July of this year she put in almost 60 hours of volunteer work at the House near Cox South!

What is your favorite thing to do at the House?

My favorite activity is cleaning and restocking rooms.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy watching Netflix.

How did you hear about the Ronald McDonald House?

My aunt stayed in a Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City when my cousin was in an accident.

This month we are finishing up our two part series with Tamara Maddox, Program Manager for the Healthy Smiles Academy.

In part one, we learned about the logistics of the program and some of the key components to its success. In this edition we focus on the impact it has on the lives of its participants.

child actually looks forward to brushing at night. This is a huge impact, especially for families of a child with special disabilities who may struggle with sensory issues. Brushing in the classroom through the Healthy Smiles Academy really becomes quite the social event and that rubs off at home!

How does the brushing program benefit the kids, their families, the schools, and the community as a whole?

When a child participates in the Healthy Smiles Academy, they walk away not only with a healthier mouth, but with renewed self-esteem and excitement to share their skills with others. Those who graduate from this program often take their knowledge home and encourage family members to brush and floss daily using the same positive language that we use at school. Several parents have told their child’s teacher that brushing at home is no longer a fight and their

What do you notice the kids enjoy most about brushing in the classroom?

Watching our participants brush together in their classrooms is one of my very favorite things.

It is such a neat experience seeing the students encourage each other, and help each other in different ways with their brushing supplies or even stepping up on the stool to rinse their mouth. For most of our participants, I would say they love brushing with their friends and having that established routine at school. Many teachers have told me if they are unable to brush due to a field trip, then their students become very upset

I hear you wrote a book! Can you tell me a little bit about that project?

Yes, we just finished creating a book we use when launching the program in a new classroom!

It’s about our brushing mascot “Decay Away Dragon” and his toothache. It follows his journey as he visits the Tooth Truck, gets his teeth cleaned, his cavities fixed, and goes to the Healthy Smiles Academy to learn how to prevent future cavities. Decay Away Dragon is very excited to become a super star!

What do you love most about your job with the Healthy Smiles Academy?

I love getting to work closely with our young participants. I have worked with kids for many years as a nanny and teaching preschool, and working closely with children through this program is an absolute joy. All the wonderful children we work with have such an excitement

for brushing and it is such a thrill to get to see their bright smiles every time I am in their classrooms!

Can you share your most memorable moment from this past school year?

My most memorable moment is when I delivered “tooth fairy” gifts to participants at Holland Elementary School last spring.

Several students gathered around and asked if the Tooth Fairy left

the items under my pillow. One little girl promptly told a boy that the Tooth Fairy, “doesn’t leave gifts, she only leaves money.”

She came to the conclusion that the Tooth Fairy left me money and I bought the gifts on her behalf, since the Tooth Fairy keeps a busy schedule.

That’s so adorable. What is the funniest thing a child has asked you?

One of the cutest things a child has ever asked me is if I was the Tooth Fairy’s sister. I thought this was such a cute moment.

He even checked me for wings.

Thank you so much for sharing with us, Tamara. We have learned so much about the Healthy Smiles Academy! We can’t wait to hear how this next school year goes for the program!

STAFF

Chili-Beef Stuffing Bake 6 oz package Stove Top Cornbread Stuffing Mix 1 lb lean ground beef, cooked and drained 15oz can kidney beans, do not drain 8 oz can tomato sauce Makes 6 servings. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix contents of stuffing mix pouch with 1.5 cups hot water in large bowl. Set aside. Mix remaining ingredients in 11x7in baking dish. Top with stuffing. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes, or until heated thoroughly.

Healthy Smiles Academy Program Manager Tamara Maddox

Garbage Disposal 101 Many people never think to clean the garbage disposal until it produces a smelly odor. Clean hard to reach areas in your drain and around your sink and faucet with an old toothbrush dipped in Clorox.

You can also sprinkle half a cup of baking soda down the disposal and follow with one cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz and pop, allow this to work for a few minutes then pour boiling water down the drain. Next slice up a lemon and run it through the disposal while the water is running. The lemon will finish cleaning and deodorize your drain.

21st Annual Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour The Diamond Room || 2340 W. Grand 10:00am – 9:00pm (Extended Hours!)

The 21st Annual Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour will be held Friday, November 18, 2016 and showcase some of the area’s most beautiful and unique homes decorated for the holidays.

After touring the homes, you are invited to join us at Springfield’s Diamond Room for our annual Holiday Tea and desserts, provided by Simply Delicious Catering, and Cup O’Cheer Market, featuring gifts and beautiful home decor from specialty merchants around the Ozarks. Although the House near Cox South will not be a featured home this year, both of our Ronald McDonald Houses will be available for tours, as well as the Tooth Truck.

The first 1,000 guests to purchase a ticket will receive a commemorative Cup O’Cheer china teacup and saucer designed and produced especially for the event by the team at BridgeBlue Sourcing Partners and Obelisk Home. The teacups and saucers may be picked up at The Diamond Room on the day of the event.

Tickets go on sale September 15th, and are $30 each in advance or $35 the day of the event. Proceeds from the event benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks.
