April 26th & 27th Volunteers are needed for the 20th Annual Rotary Rock’n Ribs BBQ Festival. This year’s event will take place April 26-27 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and will include live music, kids play zone, and some amazing barbecue. The Tooth Truck (our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®), is one of seven benefitting charities and we need YOUR volunteer help to ensure a successful event.

Volunteers are needed to help at the gate with admission, housekeeping, check in and out competing teams, and more. Registration can be completed online, or by contacting Heather Hyde, at Heather.Hyde@ RMHCozarks.org or 417-820-0764.

Spots are filled on a first-come, firstserved basis, so sign up as soon as possible. We strongly recommend

only those volunteers who are 21 and older sign up for a Friday night shift.

When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House?

“This will be our 3rd meal … we started providing meals in August of 2018. It is a personal goal of mine to serve a meal once every 3 months.”

How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program?

“My daughter is a nurse at Mercy. She served while in school and told our family about it.”

What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program?

“Visiting with the families. I love getting to sit down and talk with them. It is interesting to see their journey and hear about their story.”

“There was this young man who we met the first time we served. I loved getting to sit down and talk to him about his story and obstacles. When we came back to serve a second time, this young man was still here and immediately showed me pictures of his baby.”

“It is such a great opportunity to serve. It is very beneficial to all parties involved. This opportunity was just a great fit for our family and I love doing it.”

Mission Moment The Spoor Family

In 2018, the Spoor family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South for 54 days while twins Amelia and Gregory were in the NICU. Nothing brings the staff more joy than when little ones come back to say hello! We were so happy to see Morgan and meet the twins, who are thriving and cute as pie!

House Volunteer Spotlight Becky and Cheryl Becky Gillham has been volunteering at the House Near Cox South for 16 years. Her staff Cheryl Douglas has been coming with Becky for the last two years.

What is your favorite thing to do (or a couple things) at the House?

“Nope, the Ronald McDonald House is our place.”

How did you learn about the Ronald House?

“My mom used to bring me to volunteer here.” – Becky

“I like to vacuum and disinfect the toys in the playroom” –Becky

“After Becky’s mom stopped bringing her, she hired staff to bring her. That’s how I started volunteering.” -Cheryl

“I like to straighten up the playroom, but mostly I just follow Becky around.” –Cheryl

Do you have any favorite memories?

“I love the Christmas decorations.” – Becky

What do you enjoy in your free time?

“I bowl on my iPad and I color. I know everyone’s birthday and I make them coloring sheets for their birthday. For the 8th spring in a row, I have the opportunity to grace your mailboxes and computer screens with a little diddy about my time on the Tooth Truck. As some of you may recall from my previous yearly updates, my favorite type of fillings are those on a child’s front teeth. I often get questions from patients, parents, and school staff about how we go about repairing a front tooth so I thought I’d dedicate this year’s recap to walking you through the usual steps.

If any of you have ever had a chipped front tooth, then you know how self-conscious it can make you. Children often don’t know how to put that feeling into words but instead may talk to you with their head tilted down or their hand obscuring their mouth or, when asked to smile, they might only give you a tight-lipped grin. We have seen kids who have gone months and even years dealing with a smile they are embarrassed of so it’s no stretch at all to say that these types of appointments are everyone’s favorite (from the patient to the dental staff to the child’s parents and teachers) - it’s impossible not to smile when you see a child look in the mirror and be proud to show off what they now see looking back at them.

A. My darling patient had gone with a chip to her right permanent central incisor for several months. She said that she didn’t like how it looked when she smiled and it also was very rough to her tongue.

B. Since teeth come in a wide variety of colors, we always start the appointment by selecting what shade of composite filling material

will be the best match. We do this without the overhead dental light as it can alter the colors and sometimes even step outside to see the tooth in several different lighting situations.

- Not shown is the process of using a dental hand piece to lightly prep/ roughen the tooth surface so the filling material will better adhere to it.

C. To best prepare the tooth for the filling, an etchant material is placed on the tooth (we affectionately call it “tooth shampoo”). The etch acts to clean the tooth so that the rough and porous dental tubules are open and ready to be bonded to. This is similar to the process of using alcohol to clean both surfaces that are about to be super glued together.)

D. Next, a primer and bond are applied (“tooth glue” that we paint on with our “pink paint brush”). In our example above this would be the super glue step.

E. At this point the tooth is ready for the resin composite (“tooth play-doh”) to be placed and shaped into the general form of the tooth. Several different sizes of instruments are used for this step and they all have varying working ends that help with smoothing and shaping the resin material. As the resin is light cured, the ambient light in the room will start to set up the material so there is a limited amount of time one has to work with.

F. After both step D and E, a curing light is used to set the material. Our patients are always fascinated by our “blue flashlight” and how it can immediately turn our squishy play-doh hard as a rock.

G. At this point the tooth has the rough shape of a tooth but is usually bulkier and longer to give room to polish off excess.

I. The final step once the tooth is of the right size and shape is to polish the resin material so that it has the same luster and shine as the tooth.

J. At the end, we always step back and look at the tooth (without all of the instruments and other distractions). At this point we have the child feel the tooth with their tongue and also bite up and down to double check that it not only looks as they had hoped but

also feels and functions as it should. We tell patients that the filling will never be as strong as the original tooth and advise them to eat crunchy food with their back teeth and to avoid biting into hard foods like apples and carrots with the filled tooth.

My absolute favorite part of the appointment is the reveal!

Giving a child a mirror and letting them see what we just spent 30 minutes creating is the best. Their reactions range from huge smiles to tears to stunned silence. Some

turn and hug us while others just keep grinning. Even the children who don’t say much, walk into school with their head higher and a bounce in their step that they didn’t have before.

So here’s to another year behind me of smiles and another year ahead me of the same. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I again thank each of you reading this for your support of the Tooth Truck and the children in our community.

Katlyn Frazier is a pre-dental major at MSU who volunteers for

both the Tooth Truck and Healthy Smiles Academy. She does a wonderful job with kids, demonstrating proper brushing habits and encouraging them every step of the way. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, works as a server at a local BBQ restaurant, and can often be found studying for an upcoming school exam.

Melissa Schmittgens is also a pre-dental major at MSU. She has previous experience working with children from her time as a camp counselor at a summer camp for children with disabilities. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to volunteer with the Tooth Truck because, not only does it help prepare her for future dental aspirations, but it is a philanthropic focus of her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Welcome Katlyn and Melissa!

All-Star Weekend

June 7th & 8th It’s an ALL-STAR weekend June 7-8, 2019. The 18th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (all-star high school football game) and the 8th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield. RMHC of the Ozarks and the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “All-Star Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, all graduated seniors. And…it all benefits the Tooth Truck! Volunteers are needed for both events and we’d love for YOU to join us.
