Cox House Grounds Please join us in extending our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to the grounds team at CoxHealth for their recent donation of mulch to the House near Cox South. Not only that, this incredibly hard-working team comes out each and every week to mow the House lawn. Time and time again, CoxHealth has proven to be an incredibly generous and supportive partnering medical facility. Tempur-Pedic Mattress Donation Through a national partnership between Ronald McDonald House Charities and Tempur-Pedic, we were recently the recipient of 10 brand-new TempurPedic mattresses! This enabled us to replace six of our mattresses at the House near Cox South, and four at the House at Mercy Kids.

Providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for our families to rest and recharge is a top priority at Ronald McDonald House, and this national partnership has played an enormous role in making that endeavor a success. Tempur-Pedic has become synonymous with a good night’s sleep, and we have received countless comments about the quality of rest our families experience during their stay because of them.

Six Ways to Get Involved with RMHC! There are so many ways to get involved with our organization and make a difference for the children and families we serve!

Become a part of our Family Dinner Program and donate a meal or ingredients, cater a meal, or have a small group come to the House and cook for our families right there in the House kitchens!

Collect Pop Tabs for our Family and Patient Needs Funds. Aluminum is the most valuable item in a recycling bin and every Pop Tab collected can make a difference not only for our families and patients, but also our environment.

Donate items from our RMH and Tooth Truck Wish Lists. The needs of our families and patients aboard the Tooth Truck are always changing. Creating a donation drive among friends or coworkers is an easy and impactful service project!

Donate your vehicle. Did you know if you’ve got an old car, truck, motorcycle, RV, or even boat that is taking up space in your driveway and garage, you can donate it? Through our vehicle donation program, you can arrange for a pick-up and they’ll haul away your old vehicle for free!

Create a Facebook Fundraiser. These can be done on birthdays or other occasions, and you can choose to raise funds for a charity. By selecting RMHC of the Ozarks as your charity, Facebook will include a section about our organization’s mission to share with your friends and family and we will receive 100% of the funds raised!

Become a volunteer. As we ease back our COVID restrictions, we are starting to welcome back volunteers to our Houses and the Tooth Truck.

The sign-up form is available on our website, and you can commit to a weekly 3-hour shift at either House, serve as a Patient Advocate on the Tooth Truck, or get involved as an event volunteer!

There is no greater reward for us than watching our families find comfort in our volunteers, staff and each other around the dinner table or seeing a Tooth Truck patient smile a little bigger. Through each small act or donation, you help make these moments possible.

Bill Williams As an active member of the Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club, Bill Williams is always willing to jump in and help lead Sertoma’s partnership with RMHC in any way he can. He is best known at the House near Cox South for his great barbecuing skills. There’s no doubt that the families enjoy seeing him in the House and eating the delicious food he cooks up.

Dinner Group Recipe

Crock-Pot Easy Meatloaf by Brenda Podewitz Serves 12

INGREDIENTS: 4 lbs. Extra Lean Ground Beef 4 Large Eggs 1 1/2 cup Milk 1 1/2 cup Bread Crumbs 1 cup Chicken Broth 1/2 cup Finely Diced Yellow Onion 6 Cloves Garlic (minced) 2 tsp Kosher Salt 1/2 tsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper 1/2 cup Ketchup

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a large mixing bowl combine the beaten eggs, milk, bread crumbs, spices, onion, garlic and chicken broth until well combined.

2. Add the hamburger meat and mix well with your hands or a very sturdy wooden spoon. If the mixture seems too loose, add 1 to 2 tablespoons more of the bread crumbs to help absorb the liquid.

3. If desired, place a slow cooker liner in the bottom of a 5 quart or larger slow cooker or spray the crock insert with non-stick cooking spray. It is easiest to remove the meatloaf from the slow cooker whole and intact if you use a liner.

4. Scoop the meatloaf mixture into the bottom of the crock and shape to form a loaf, keeping the loaf away from the sides of the slow cooker.

5. Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours, check the internal temperature of the meatloaf with an instant read thermometer making sure it has reached 106 Fahrenheit.

6. Top meatloaf with ketchup, serve and enjoy!

COOKING PRO-TIP Don’t be tempted to open up your CrockPot unless checking the internal temperature. Each peek you take can add up to 15-20 minutes of additional cooking time!

Around the Houses Laundry Center Ribbon Cutting We are so excited to announce the completion of the much-anticipated Mercy House Laundry Center upgrade! This was an enormous undertaking and would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our partnering medical facility, Mercy Hospital. Not only did Mercy contribute new dryers, they generously took on the challenging job of venting them to the outside, increasing drying times. Our families will benefit every day from this tremendous gift.

Our newly renovated Laundry Center officially opened to our families on May 20th following a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the House. Among those in attendance were RMHC of the Ozarks staff members, volunteers, construction project team members, and Mercy Hospital representatives. We had a great time celebrating this exciting upgrade and the reception from our families was nothing short of extraordinary.

New Area Rugs After several years of selfless and dedicated service to the Ronald McDonald House and those we serve, it became clear that the time had come for our Mercy House area rugs to retire. One of our employees is a huge fan of podcasts and one of his favorites has a running joke where the host will randomly cut to commercials for his dad’s local area rug store in Cleveland, Ohio. Needless to say, we worked with Marshall Carpet One & Rug Gallery out of Cleveland Ohio for a couple of months to try and find a suitable replacement for the area rugs around the House. Steve Glassman went above and beyond to find something that is of great quality, contains 0% latex, and is machine washable!

After extending a discount to us for these pieces, we were still going to need to wait on purchasing four of the rugs until 2023 so we could budget accordingly. We reached out to see if they could extend the same discount on those final rugs in 2023, and Steve quickly responded and asked that we send our entire order because he was going to cover the difference, and the shipping cost!

Our 13 BEAUTIFUL brand-new area rugs arrived at the beginning of June and have found their new homes in their designated spaces.

These area rugs play a significant role in creating a comfortable and calming environment for families who are going through an incredibly difficult experience. House Volunteer Spotlight Amy Grubaugh

Amy Grubaugh recently received a special award for volunteering over 3,000 hours of her time to the Ronald McDonald House!! Amy has been at the House near Cox South for over 12 years. She loves to assist the Program staff with creating and sending acknowledgements to our generous donors and Family Dinner Groups.

What is your favorite thing to do at the House?

I’ve typically worked in the office and special events, but I’m always happy to chip in on any task.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

Spending time at Table Rock Lake, walking my dog, and gardening.

Extracurricular activities?

I’m retired so everything is extracurricular! 😊 Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? If yes, where?

I’ve volunteered with Ambassadors for Children, Least of These, and Outreach Programs with my church.

How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House?

I had just moved here following

Monthly Statistics retirement from Richmond, Virginia.

During my career, I worked with several non-profits, especially children’s charities.

I learned about RMHC through my walk with the March of Dimes.

Do you have any favorite memories?

There are a lot! My favorite was meeting a mom in the kitchen that obviously wanted to talk. I asked her how her day was going and she responded by saying, “Can I just have a hug?”

What do you most enjoy about volunteering with our organization?

That’s easy... seeing firsthand how this organization helps families every single day with struggles that most of us will never have to endure.

Fun Fact not many people would know about you?

I went to High School in three different states and two different colleges, but I settled down and stayed with one company during my 35-year career.

Father’s Day The dads who spent Father’s Day at the Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks this year were surprised with an extra special gift! Each dad was gifted a custom leather keychain and a bag of delicious beef jerky (it doesn’t get much manlier than that!).

A very special THANK YOU goes to Springfield Leather Co and Horrmann Meats who both jumped on board with this idea and wanted to help make it happen. Springfield Leather Co went above and beyond to bring our vision to life with a custom keychain design, and Horrmann Meats almost depleted their entire jerky supply to meet our needs! Both businesses donated a large portion of the product to help make this special gesture possible!

Spending Father’s Day with a child in the hospital is certainly not ideal, but we hope this special gift made their big day a little brighter.

Happy Workiversary, Jack and Savannah!

Please join us in celebrating an incredible milestone for two of our beloved Family Care Managers, Jack and Savannah! Jack Osborn celebrated his 4th year at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Kids on June 12th, and Savannah Keller celebrated her 5th year on June 16th! Jack and Savannah have impacted countless families with their unconditional kindness, compassion, and genuine desire to help those in need.

To commemorate this occasion, we reached out to a couple of individuals who have experienced the love and care of Jack and Savannah firsthand. Here’s what they had to say: “Jack brings an upbeat joyful energy to the House and will quietly complete small gestures that make all the difference when balancing the emotions of your baby’s health.” – Jessica Wagner, Former RMHC Family “Savannah has always been very welcoming, patient, kind, and great at explaining what we will be doing. Sydney Moler joined our Family Care Manager team at the House near Cox South at the end of March. Since then, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Health Services, with an emphasis in Science Reasoning and a Healthcare Management minor from Missouri State University. She is now focusing her studies on earning a master’s degree in Health Administration at MSU. The families will miss Sydney as she continues her journey in her career in the medical field.

Continued Support and Lasting Relationships For the first four months of 2022, the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Kids had the honor of getting to know one of the most kind, considerate, strong, incredible families to call this place their “home-away-from-home”. The bond between our staff and the Wagner family was immediate, and we rooted for them through every phase of their long journey. After 129 days at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Kids, Jessica and Tyson were finally able to take “Cowboy” Cole home. We all knew that we would miss them dearly, but we were absolutely overjoyed for them to begin the next chapter in their lives with a healthy and happy baby boy. We were also comforted to know that we hadn’t seen the last of the Wagners, as they had made it very clear that RMHC had secured a place in their hearts and lives permanently.

In the weeks following their departure, Jessica returned to the House to visit, bringing with her the most thoughtful handwritten thank you cards personalized to every member of the Mercy House team. Soon after her visit, we happily welcomed them back to the House in May for a one-night stay when Cole was having an operation. It was during their one-night stay that Jessica shared her most recent efforts to give back to RMHC. On her birthday (May 24th), Jessica had created a Facebook birthday fundraiser for RMHC of the Ozarks which raised $585! In addition to that, Tyson’s parents gave $500 on our website in their honor. To say that we were blown away by their generosity and thoughtfulness is an understatement.

The Wagners have kept a close eye on our Wish List and hand-delivered a Roomba Vacuum to the House at Mercy Kids in early June. Our new Roomba was quickly bestowed with the loving nickname of “Wagner”, and brings a smile to our faces every time he zooms by on a floor cleaning mission.

The lasting relationships between Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks and those we serve are truly what make this place the remarkable, uncommon, and impactful place that it is. We hope to love, encourage, and care for every single family well beyond their stay. Thank you, Jessica and Tyson, for making us a part of your lives.

Farewell, Aida!

Aida Stanley joined our team of Family Care Managers at the House near Cox South back in February. Aida is now a junior at Missouri State University where she is pursuing a degree in English and is an active member of the Tri-Sigma sorority.

Aida’s summer will be spent studying and traveling abroad all across Europe! The House will surely miss the positivity she always brought in. Au revoir, Aida!

The Tooth Truck made a recent trek to West Plains spending four weeks serving children during summer school. We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community, and we met so many amazing kids, parents, teachers, and support staff. While it is always rewarding to help all the children, sometimes we get to meet an extra special kiddo that really reminds us of the importance of the work we do. Anna is just that patient. At age 17, Anna will be entering her Senior year in the fall. A friendly and personable girl, Anna, had this to say about her visit:

surprised us with flowers and a very special card when she arrived for her final visit on our last day in West Plains. She wanted to express her gratitude for the service that the Tooth Truck provided for her, and especially for the way she felt about herself when it was all over. There was hardly a dry eye on the Truck after that! We are thrilled that Anna can feel good about her beautiful smile!

“Walking into the Tooth Truck for the first time seemed daunting. I was so nervous about being judged or mistreated, and it was the first time I would be taking care of my health all alone. As soon as the doors opened, all my fears melted away. The ladies walked me in, all greeted me with bright and genuine smiles, and began to make me feel at home instantly. They walked me through the process and made every step seamless. Expertly they began to work while making sure I was okay through it all. In the end, not only did they give me the confidence to smile a little bigger, but I left feeling I had another whole family. Thank you so much <3” Anna hadn’t been to the dentist since she was a little girl, which resulted in a lot of cavities. After a total of six visits to the Tooth Truck, she completed her treatment cavity-free! After lots of hugs and promises to floss, we said goodbye. However, Anna

Anna wrote this in her card to the Tooth Truck, “I am endlessly grateful. You have changed how I feel about myself forever”. Anna is pictured with Dental Assistant Kassidy and Dr. Sarah.

The Tooth Truck spent four weeks in West Plains and was able to provide 72 children with 144 appointments for a dollar value of $129,224.

Welcome Amanda Honor

The Tooth Truck is excited to welcome Amanda Honor to the team as a part-time dental assistant.

Amanda is a recent graduate of OTC and knows firsthand what the mobile dental experience is like, as she visited the Tooth Truck as a young child. She is looking forward to applying her dental skills to support the mission of the organization as she helps children and youth understand the importance of brushing and flossing at home. Outside of work, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family around the water, playing at an arcade, and bowling. We are thrilled to have you, Amanda!

On Friday, June 3, we celebrated the tradition of watching graduated seniors play in the final football game of their high school careers at the 21st Annual GRIN IRON CLASSIC All-Star Football Game.

As the East went head-to-head with the West, parents, coaches, friends and supporters gathered to cheer on their favorite team in this game benefiting the Tooth Truck. Nearly 90 local high school athletes from Southwest Missouri were selected by the SW MO High School Football Coaches Association for this annual competition, hosted by the Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club.
