All-Star Weekend June 7th & 8th It’s a Sertoma ALL-STAR weekend June 7-8, 2019. The 18th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (allstar high school football game) and the 8th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield. RMHC of the Ozarks,

the SW MO Football Coaches Association, and the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “AllStar Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, all graduated seniors. And…it all benefits the Tooth Truck!

“I’ve been serving for 14 years and my daughter Hadley has been helping me for the last 12,” – Carolyn Hamilton “I’ve been helping for the last seven and half years,” -Michelle Long How often do you serve?

“The third Sunday of every odd month.”

Do you have any special memories associated with serving dinner?

“We had just served the last bit of food we had left. It was just enough for everyone who came; when a group of 20 people came in the door. It was all one big family. Luckily, they brought their own food and were just going out to be on the deck to have a picnic.

I was ready to whip up whatever I could from the refrigerator,” –Carolyn.

How did you hear about our Family Dinner Program?

“I heard about it through Evergreen Church.

One of the ladies in my Sunday School Class had a baby born with a heart defect and they had to stay in a Ronald McDonald House. She began doing it every month and I tagged along with. Eventually they had to stop doing it but I’ve continued on. The other Michelle’s started helping me later,” –Carolyn.

Mission Moment Collins Family

Stephanie Collins was admitted twice to Mercy Hospital because of preterm labor. Her second hospitalization occurred while she was only in her 29th week of pregnancy.

Stephanie and her family were referred to the Ronald McDonald House to keep her close to the medical care she needed for her high-risk pregnancy. Her stay lasted a total of 52 days. Stephanie feels grateful for the opportunity to “get the rest she needed until her baby arrived.” Stephanie said her favorite part about staying at the House was “connecting with the other families”.

We enjoyed spending time with Stephanie as she anticipated Elijah’s arrival and getting to know their beautiful family before they returned home.

House Volunteer Spotlight Jerrica Conrad Jerrica has a huge heart for Ronald McDonald House as her family used the House after the birth of her eldest son. She started volunteering in November 2018 and has currently served almost 50 hours at the Mercy House. Let’s learn a little more about Jerrica…

What is your favorite thing to do (or a couple things) at the House?

“Getting to know the ladies in the office! I also really enjoy serving Family Dinners when I have done that in the past.”

“I like to write acknowledgements and talk with families when they are here.”

What do you enjoy in your free time?

“I enjoy hanging out with my family and crocheting.”

How did you learn about the Ronald

“My aunt stayed at the Cox House when she had her kids. My husband and I stayed at the Mercy House for 6 days when we had our oldest son 5 years ago.”

Do you have any favorite memories?

What do you enjoy most about volunteering with our organization?

“I’ve been in those families’ shoes… getting to be able to be there for families, talk with them and let them know people care means a lot.”

Staff Stuff

We would like to thank Karis Agnew for her years of service at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox. In 2011 Karis started at the Cox House as a volunteer and was soon recognized as Outstanding Young Volunteer in 2012. In April 2014 Karis came on board as a Family Care Manager and in no surprise to anyone, thrived in this role. Five years later, on April 27th, Karis will serve her last shift as a Family Care Manager. Throughout the years she has been a tremendous asset to our team. We will miss you and wish you nothing but the best!

Monthly Statistics Dinner Group Recipe

Vegan Butternut Squash Soup

Prepared by Mary Jane Dunn from Campbell United Methodist on February 6th at the Ronald McDonald House Near Cox.

INGREDIENTS

1 large butternut squash, about 2 pounds, cut in half, seeds scooped out and reserved 3 large carrots, ends cut off 1 large onion, peeled, ends cut off, cut in half 1 large Granny Smith Apple, cut in half and cored, skin left on 1 medium sweet potato, whole 4 large cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons olive oil salt and pepper 3 or 4 cups of vegetable stock

INSTRUCTIONS 1 Preheat oven to 425º with the 2 oven racks in the middle. Line a large roasting sheet with parchment paper.

2 Place the butternut squash, carrots, onion, apple, sweet potato and garlic on the roasting sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Roast on the top shelf of the oven.

5 After 60 minutes of roasting (or once your butternut squash is tender and a fork is very easily inserted and removed), remove the butternut squash. Once the butternut squash is cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh and transfer it to your blender. Discard the skins.

6 Add 1 or 2 cups of vegetable stock to your blender with the roasted vegetables, and blend until very smooth. (If your blender isn’t big enough, you can blend the vegetables in batches). Transfer the blended soup to a soup pot, and add in the rest of the chicken stock.

If you like your soup thicker, use just 3 cups of chicken stock. If you like it thinner (like I do!), use 4 cups of chicken stock.

7 Taste and season with salt and pepper if necessary, and warm on the oven.

3 After 20 minutes of roasting, remove the garlic and apples. Transfer to your blender.

4 After 40 minutes of roasting, remove the onion, carrots and sweet potato. Transfer the carrots and onion to your blender, and once the sweet potato is cool enough to handle, pull the skin off and add the flesh of the sweet potato to your blender. Discard the sweet potato skin.

(Or if you’re like me, eat them as a snack while dinner cooks!)

Healthy Smiles are for everyone!

Every now and then there is a child who doesn’t flourish in their home school for a variety of different reasons. In such cases, they may attend an alternative school better suited for them to successfully achieve their educational goals. Students attend the alternative school year-round to help keep them on track for graduation. They are set up with individual education plans to assist them with their unique needs with the goal of eventually returning to their home schools.

When I first had the opportunity to connect with an alternative school in town, I honestly wasn’t sure what to

expect. What I have since discovered is these students are amazing kids in need of some extra special attention and encouragement.

Students at the Greene County Youth Academy have benefitted from both the Tooth Truck’s services and the Healthy Smiles Academy. While some students were reluctant to engage in daily brushing initially, we have seen progress in their attention to oral hygiene as the program continues in the school. One of their teachers, Angelin shared the following: “Greene County Youth Academy (GCYA) is a community-based treatment program that

provides educational services along with counseling, life skills development, recreational opportunities, and behavioral treatment for middle school and high school-aged youth.

Partnering with the Tooth Truck has been extremely beneficial for the students at GCYA. Youth that might not have otherwise had access to dental care have had dental appointments and follow up sessions to treat cavities. The Tooth Truck’s education program has given them skills and knowledge to care for their teeth, as well as dental kits to take home, and supplies to brush their teeth at Continues on page 7

The Healthy Smiles Academy boosts self-esteem in each brushing participant as they learn how to properly care for their teeth.

The program adapts to each site’s specific needs to ensure participants are able to brush each day as part of their school schedule.

school every day. GCYC students have learned through the Tooth Truck program that good dental health not only boosts self-esteem, but prevents many health conditions later in life.”

Another alternative school we have been working with is the Excel Community Resource Center. Similarly to GCYA, the students are settling into a daily brushing routine. Their teacher, Kyla, shared the following

about their tooth brushing experience: “The Tooth Truck program here at Excel has brought excitement to the youth about brushing their teeth. There has been some confidence built for the youth that may have been embarrassed to ask the proper way to brush their teeth. Many of the youth enjoy brushing their teeth after their lunch. The dental hygiene techniques that were taught will help the youth

maintain their dental care for the future. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful tooth knowledge with us! We all very much enjoyed your presentations!”

We are so fortunate to connect with students at these schools as together we make an impact on their oral health. We love that the Healthy Smiles Academy is so easily adapted to the needs of the students at each different school.

Educating participants on the importance of brushing and flossing and demonstrating the correct techniques are key components of the program.

Welcome Jessica!

The Tooth Truck welcomes Jessica Zengel to its volunteer program. Jessica is originally from Joplin and currently a pre-dental student at MSU. Her mother and cousin have volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House and encouraged her to get involved since the Tooth Truck so closely connects with her career path. Jessica participated in the 2018 Grin Action Classic volleyball tournament so this was truly the perfect fit. Welcome, Jessica!

Rock’n Ribs April 25th - 27th We’d like to extend a special thank you to everyone who has already signed up to volunteer at the 20th Annual Rotary Rock’n Ribs BBQ Festival. This event would not be possible without the support of people like you!

Rock’n Ribs will take place on April 25-27 (plus break down on April 28) at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and will include live music, kids’ play zone, and some amazing

barbecue. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (fondly known as the Tooth Truck) is one of the seven benefiting charities and we need YOUR volunteer help to ensure a successful event.
