Thanks to the dedication of school leadership and staff, this extension of the Tooth Truck has been a great success and we are poised for growth and a formal launch of the program. Thanks to this generous grant, the brushing program has been formally named the “Healthy Smiles Academy” and we will add 800 kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children at Title I schools to our program each year for the PMS PMS 375 next116 three years, bringing our total participants to nearly 3,000! Our staff recently had the honor of accepting the proceeds of the Southern Living Christmas Cookbook sales held at Dillard’s-Battlefield Mall. This year’s gift of $6,866 is just one of the many ways Dillard’s and their customers help our children and families. From supporting our Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour for 19 years, to contributing over $110,000 through in-store promotions since 1998, Dillard’s is a great example of the philanthropic spirit that surrounds RMHC® of the Ozarks.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Ozarks is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children in the Ozarks. Our first core program is to provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill and injured children receiving treatment in Springfield’s medical facilities. Our first Ronald McDonald House, located near Cox South Hospital, has helped more than 10,000 families during the past 27 years. Our second House, located on the 6th floor of Mercy Children’s Hospital, has welcomed nearly 1,200 families since November 30, 2012. RMHC’s second core program, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, (fondly known as the “Tooth Truck”), provides dental treatment and prevention education for children that qualify for the free and reduced school lunch program in the Springfield area. The Tooth Truck has helped over 18,000 children during the past 13 years with 44,200 dental appointments and treatment valued at nearly $10.5 million. The Tooth Truck’s “Healthy Smiles Academy” (our daily tooth-brushing program) continues to grow at a record pace, now with 740 participants.

The Steven K. Scott Award for Excellence in Advocacy A new annual award was announced at our 26th annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on May 4th. Steve Scott thought he was attending the dinner to honor Loniel B. Ford Award recipient, Adrienne McCoy. And Adrienne thought she was there to help honor Steve Scott. They both soon found out a big surprise was in store! The Stephen K. Scott Award is the newest of four annual volunteer awards, each named after an individual that exemplifies support to the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks. Our first two awards were created in 1990 to recognize excellence in volunteerism for the Ronald McDonald House program and named in memory of volunteers Barbara L. Appleby and Loniel B. Ford. In 2003, a third award honoring Dr. Kevin D. Wallace was created to recognize excellence in Tooth Truck volunteers. The new Stephen K. Scott Award will be presented for the first time in 2016, recognizing individuals who serve as exemplary advocates for the Tooth Truck.

Those who know Steve all agree that he has been a community advocate and volunteer for decades. He joined the RMHC of the Ozarks Board of Directors in January 2000 serving for 6 years, including one year as Board Chair as well as a member of the Tooth Truck board. Steve became a huge advocate for the Tooth Truck, which began helping patients on July 8, 2002. One example of Steve’s efforts is his longtime volunteerism for the annual Rotary Rock’n Ribs BBQ Festival. He served in numerous capacities including event chair for several years, which is a yearround commitment. The Tooth Truck has benefited from Rock’n Ribs since 2002, providing critical funding to keep our program on the road. There are 6 other children’s charities that have benefited from Steve’s efforts through Rock’n Ribs. We salute and congratulate Steve for the advocacy and support he has provided for the Tooth Truck and its 18,000 patients!

A Holiday Tradition for the 19th Year The 19th annual Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour was held on November 21, 2014, the Friday before Thanksgiving Day. Featuring five beautiful homes decorated for the holidays, the first 1,200 guests to purchase a Tour ticket received a commemorative china teacup and saucer, designed by the team at BridgeBlue Sourcing Partners. A Holiday Tea was held at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South and in the grand tradition of “high tea” at five-star resorts and hotels, Chef Roland Parny provided each of our guests with a plate of elegant desserts. Our special guests toured the homes of Rick & Robin Gilmore, Kathy Pozniak, Greg & Tori Kubik, “An RMH Supporter”, and the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South. A silent auction was also held at the Ronald McDonald House. It was heartwarming to talk with so many of our guests who shared their family traditions of attending Cup O’Cheer every year, spending the day with family and friends, celebrating the start of their holiday seasons.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and many guests, the 19th edition of the Cup O’Cheer Homes Tour raised over $35,000 for the programs of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks. (See pages 12-13 for a complete list of contributors.)

Obelisk Home Presents

Paint it Forward Last fall, Obelisk Home displayed their continued support, generosity and dedication to Ronald McDonald House Charities by presenting our newest event, “Paint it Forward.” A cocktail party and silent auction featured collaborative artwork created by local artists paired with children of families that have benefited from our two Ronald McDonald Houses. Teaming up to make one-of-akind masterpieces, 14 local artists were matched with 17 children of families that have utilized the services of our Ronald McDonald Houses. The child and artist spent time together creating the base of their masterpiece, followed by each artist adding their creative flair by incorporating finishing touches to each piece. The artwork was then presented and auctioned during a heartwarming evening that included laughs and grand gestures, illustrating the relationships that each art team had cultivated. We were also fortunate to have the assistance of ETHIC (Every Teen Helps Inspire Change) in prefundraising efforts, entertaining children at the gallery painting sessions, and serving at the event. With the help of these artists, ETHIC, Obelisk Home, our families and generous supporters, nearly $12,000 was raised for Springfield’s two Ronald McDonald Houses. (See page 15 for a complete list of contributors.)

LoveLetter • Summer 2015 Healthy Smiles Academy (continued from page 1) treatment plan, while providing extensive prevention education at every appointment. The only requirement to receive treatment is for a child to qualify for the free/reduced school lunch program, allowing kids that don’t qualify for Medicaid to be helped by the Tooth Truck. In 2014, 40% of our patients fell into this category and thanks to our generous community, the Tooth Truck is there to help kids that have no options for dental care. We aspire to prevent tooth decay, the #1 chronic childhood disease. The Healthy Smiles Academy provides a tremendous avenue for EVERY CHILD in participating classrooms to learn and practice good dental hygiene, each and every day. Our experience has proven over and

over that positive reinforcement builds self-esteem, which in turn allows prevention behaviors to become more and more consistent. When every child in a classroom participates, kids tend to be more enthusiastic and are apt to continue the behavior because it is something their peers are doing. How does the program work? After local schools and teachers make a daily commitment to the program, we visit each classroom with a fun presentation, educating children on the importance of brushing and building excitement with the kids to care for their teeth. Then on launch day, our staff and amazing volunteers go classroom by classroom, working with kids two at a time, showing them how

11

to brush, encouraging them while brushing, and helping them clean up when finished. We also educate kids about flossing technique. Every child receives his or her own storage box of dental supplies. Each teacher then designates a special time during each school day for brushing. Our sincere thanks to Missouri Foundation for Health and our local schools and teachers for making the Healthy Smiles Academy possible!

The Healthy Smiles Academy will grow by 800 students each year for three years, thanks to a $183,561 grant from Missouri Foundation for Health. MFH is a resource for the region, working with communities and nonprofits to generate and accelerate positive changes in health.

Share A Heart Campaign (continued from page 9)

Randy, T.J. and Debbie Slocum are shown here, attending “T.J. Night” at McDonald’s in Marshfield.

The Share a Heart Campaign wouldn’t be complete without longtime volunteer, T.J. Slocum and his family. Due to T.J.’s tremendous efforts, $11,447 was raised through his encouragement of others to help our Houses. This

brings his 8-year total to $58,224 for the Ronald McDonald Houses! T.J.’s wonderful spirit is so contagious and we are proud to name him our “Share a Heart Champion!” We also salute his parents,

Randy and Debbie for their tremendous support of T.J.’s efforts and our entire organization! The Slocums’ smiling faces can be seen at nearly every RMHC event.

For the past 35 years, Alpha Delta Pi has supported RMHC as their national philanthropy. Members from the Gamma Mu Chapter from Missouri State University support our local Houses by volunteering their time in the Houses, providing Family Dinners, volunteering at events, repurposing artwork for family bedrooms and raising money through their annual events, the Teeter-Totter-a-Thon and Pihop Pancake Breakfast. Over the past year, they have volunteered nearly 900 hours of their time to support the mission of RMHC. We look forward to many more years of partnership!

The Vaught family knows firsthand what it’s like to be far from home with a little one in the hospital. Mitchell, Dinah and their two children Kennedi and William stayed at the House near Cox South nearly four years ago when youngest son Wyatt was born. They continue to give back through serving family meals, volunteering in the House and making cards for families currently staying with us.

Devin Morris chose the Ronald McDonald House for his Eagle Scout project and after talking with House staff found the perfect idea and project! He constructed and stained a set of stair steps for one of our family bedrooms, which features a high set bed in that room. The stairs make it much easier for new moms to get into bed so they can enjoy some rest and relaxation.
