We’ve been actively volunteering in the Houses since 2010.

What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program?

Interacting personally with the families who benefit from the House.

How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program?

Ronald McDonald House is the national philanthropy for our sorority so we are always looking for ways to get involved with our local chapters. Currently our Philanthropy Chair is a volunteer at the Mercy House so she helps keep us informed about ways to give back—the Family Dinner Program being one of them.

Do you have any favorite memories?

Just seeing the families makes the whole experience memorable.

Around the Houses Mission Moment

Written by: Casey & Ryan Groose I have always admired the support that the staff and volunteers of the Ronald McDonald House provide to families during medical hardships. It’s easy to understand that the care, love and concern for families going thru difficult situations can be an immeasurable blessing. What I never expected though was to be one of the families to receive care from the RMH. I had always pictured the RMH to serve families living far away from the hospital with premature babies or children who are very ill. But that changed when our 6-year-old son, Ben, became ill with what started as a simple case of strep throat. Our son began having dizzy spells immediately following his first bout with the common illness. The strep kept returning and the dizziness wouldn’t end.

After several months and many trips to different doctors for a battery of testing, it was determined that Ben needed extensive testing in the form of sleep deprived MRI and EEG. These were to be performed on different days, which meant two nights of no sleep coupled with early morning car rides and long days full of multiple doctor appointments. The Ronald McDonald House was mentioned to us, as we live about an hour from Cox South and the people doing the scheduling knew of our stressful days ahead. We declined for the first round of tests, thinking that we didn’t want to take up space that other families with more need could use. That day was so incredibly taxing on my husband, son and I. It was a stressful day in and of itself, but to top it off, we were exhausted from the lack of sleep.

When time came for the next series of sleep deprived tests, we were expecting bad weather. Grandparents strongly urged us to get a hotel room near the hospital, so that we would have one less issue to deal with. We remembered the offer of the Ronald McDonald House and called them. They had room for us and welcomed us, even though it was late when we arrived. There were plenty of activities for Ben to do that helped keep him awake. We were just across the street from the hospital, which erased our early morning travel issues. Once he was finished with the testing, we were able to go back to the house for breakfast and to get some rest in the room while we waited on our first of several appointments. Having less travel issues and a good place to rest made the day so much easier. Of course, the volunteers and staff were helpful and caring and wonderful.

A few things that are often times unmentioned is the fully stocked kitchen and other volunteer organizations who team up with the RMH to prepare hot meals twice daily for all the people staying at the house. How wonderful it is to families who are staying for an extended amount of time to know they don’t have to worry about the cost of eating out while dealing with already stressful situations. Also the cost of staying at the Ronald McDonald House is very minimal, which can be a great relief for a family who is already facing huge medical bills.

The strep virus eventually worked its way out of our sons’ body and Ben is now back to his normal, happy and healthy self. He has shown a great interest in volunteering his time at the Ronald McDonald House, because he knows firsthand that it is a great way to help people. Our family has started the journey of volunteering at the House and I hope that we are able to continue as time allows.

Volunteer Spotlight Beth Mecca

Beth started volunteering at the House in April 2016. In her time with the organization Beth has been a great volunteer and has enjoyed helping at events like the Cup’O Cheer Homes Tour. She volunteers on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings at the Mercy House, and just recently surpassed 50 hours of volunteer service. Learn more about Beth!

How did you hear about the Ronald McDonald House?

I live near the Cox House, and I walked by it all the time. When I needed to volunteer for service hours for school I choose the Ronald McDonald House and I liked it so much I decided to continue volunteering!

What is your favorite part about volunteering?

My favorite part about volunteering is seeing and getting to know all the families staying at the House. I love actually seeing how the Ronald McDonald House has positively impacted families that stay here!

What are your hobbies while not volunteering?

I love playing and spending time with my dog, as well as hiking, reading, playing music, and spending time with my family.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I really enjoy working with the Assistant Manager, Bailey! I also really like getting to know families and knowing that my contributions are helping out where they are most needed.

What else would you like to share about yourself?

I just graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in IT. I moved to Springfield 2 years ago to be closer to my family and when I moved here I didn’t know many people outside of my work or family. I really enjoy volunteering at RMH because it gives me the chance to get to know people, and I always look forward to helping whenever I can!

What is your favorite memory from volunteering at RMH? I don’t have a specific favorite memory, but it is

Welcome New Assistant Managers to the Houses We would like to welcome Abby Neumann to our Assistant Management team! Abby is a senior at Missouri State University studying Child and Family Development with an emphasis in Family Studies and will begin pursing a master’s degree next fall. She first became involved with the House near Cox South as a volunteer in September 2015 and loved getting to visit with families and learning more about them. Her history with RMHC dates much farther back though.

When she and her twin brother were born prematurely her family was able to stay at a Ronald McDonald House, which inspired her to pay it forward and she is thrilled to serve families in her new role. Abby spent a semester studying abroad in London and took breathtaking photos of her European travels, which she loves sharing with others. She enjoys traveling, photography and spending time with family and friends. We are thrilled to have you on our team, Abby!

Kennedy is no stranger to the organization as she has been volunteering in various capacities for most of her life. She loves the Ronald McDonald House and the opportunity to give back now as a staff member. She has participated in gymnastics for eleven years and started coaching about two years ago, and she is also a competitive athlete at CrossFit 417. Kennedy plans to attend Missouri State University in the fall and a few of her hobbies include reading, writing and cooking. Kennedy says one of her favorite things to do is go to coffee shops with her friends. We are so excited to have Kennedy joining our RMHC team! Welcome, Kennedy!

Sydney is currently a sophomore at Missouri State University studying physical education. Her plans are to pursue a career as a Physical Education teacher and she would love to coach high school women’s basketball too! Sydney was introduced to the organization by fellow Assistant Manager, Bailey Ghan, and has enjoyed being part of the RMHC family. She loves meeting all the families and wonderful volunteers who make it possible for the House to serve families each day. She loves sports, Chinese food, and sour candies! It’s been said, by more than one patient, that the hardest part of coming to the Tooth Truck is picking the perfect prize at the end of an appointment. Many patients proclaim things like, “There’s so many things in here!” or “I don’t know what to pick!” Patients of each gender, all ages, and varying interests visit the Tooth Truck every day, so we always try to maintain a wide variety of prizes for our patients to choose from. We love seeing a colorful, varied, and wellstocked prize box, but some times the selection starts to dwindle.

The Tooth Truck’s success is closely connected to the incredible community support received from donors, volunteers, and other individuals committed to the dental health of our patients.

completion of a success dental appointment. Donated items (must be new) for the prize box often include items like beanie babies, small stuffed animals, toy cars, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, rings, bracelets, toy frogs, dinosaurs, colored pencils, crayons, CDs, books, and hair accessories.

Recently, one of our very own volunteers donated a soccer ball in hopes that one lucky patient would fall in love with it. Two special brothers selected the ball, and were so excited to take it home and play together!

The real prize for visiting the Tooth Truck is, of course, leaving with a healthy, bright, and cavity free smile. The gift for the parents and families of our patients is knowing that their child’s self-confidence will be forever changed now that they can smile proudly and show off their pearly whites! However, for the child who has come for multiple visits to fix many cavities, or for the child who was initially scared to come to the Truck, getting to pick their one favorite thing out of that prize box is a very special reward!

The Tooth Truck is thrilled to welcome Briana (Bri) Isakson to its volunteer family! Bri is currently in her freshman year at MSU and an active member of the pre-dental society. She learned about the Tooth Truck from a fellow volunteer and knew it would be a great fit for her interests. Bri’s family owns and operates farms around the area and she knows a LOT about farm life and animals! Welcome to the Tooth Truck, Bri! We are delighted to have you!

The Tooth Truck also welcomes Victoria Simpson to the team! Victoria is a student at Drury University pursuing studies in dentistry. Victoria already has dental experience as a registered dental hygienist, but decided she didn’t want to stop there! Victoria also volunteers her time at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South Hospital and loves spending time with families and staff. All-Star Weekend Save the Date: June 2 & 3

It’s an ALL-STAR weekend June 2-3, 2017. The 16th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (all-star high school football game) and the 6th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield. RMHC of the Ozarks, the SW MO Football Coaches Association, and the AllStar Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “All-Star Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, all graduated seniors. And…it all benefits the Tooth Truck! Volunteers are needed for both events and we’d love for YOU to join us.

Qualifications and Considerations for the Annual Awards to Recognize Excellence in Volunteerism The Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald HouseÂŽ of the Ozarks proudly announced the formation of two annual awards to honor excellence in volunteerism at the Annual Volunteer Dinner on April 24, 1990.

With the permission of their families, these awards have been established and named in memory of two beloved Ronald McDonald House volunteers. The Barbara L. Appleby Award will be presented to the most deserving volunteer who contributes primarily to programs involving House Operations. The Loniel B. Ford Award will be presented to an individual who exemplifies volunteer efforts for the Ronald McDonald House within the community. Each year, the awards are presented at the Annual Volunteer Dinner.

The qualifications required to earn each award and the considerations that will be given to volunteer candidates have been developed according to the standards Loniel and Barbara practiced on a daily basis.

These are detailed below.

The Barbara L. Appleby Award for Excellence in Volunteerism 1.

Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

3. Dependability (Consistently works a three-hour shift once a week, with the exceptions of illness, vacations, and/or emergencies; gives adequate notice when absent, trying to fill shift with another qualified volunteer.)

4. Works a Minimum of (30) Three-Hour Shifts in the Preceding 12 Months 5. Above Average Work Skills (Prioritizes needs independently; has initiative to use volunteer time purposefully; has ability to use Blue Book; integrates self into tasks at hand.)

The Kevin D. Wallace Award for Excellence in Volunteerism On April 29, 2003, the Board of Directors of The Tooth Truck, Inc. announced the formation of the Kevin D. Wallace Award for Excellence in Volunteerism. This award was presented to a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile volunteer for the first time at the 2004 Volunteer Dinner on April 27. This award was established in honor of Dr. Kevin Wallace in recognition of his commitment and dedication in bringing the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to reality. The following criteria will be used in selecting the volunteer most deserving of this honor.

Tooth Truck Patients are #1 Priority.

Attitude and Professionalism (Handles internal information and problems in a tactful and professional manner; refuses to discuss internal matters with those who are uninvolved; uses good self control; able to deal effectively with emergencies; strictly maintains confidentiality; uses good judgment.)

3. Dependability (Consistently works each volunteer shift as scheduled, with the exceptions of illness, vacations, and/or emergencies; gives adequate notice when absent, trying to fill shift with another qualified volunteer.)
