A message from our CEO & Board President Thank you to our amazing community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, please accept our sincere appreciation for your support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. Over the past year, we have worked together to enhance experiences for our families and prepare to grow into the future. To ensure families experience the very best RMHC has to offer, we have expanded our staff, enhanced our partnership opportunities, formalized our volunteer program, improved our facilities with new appliances, and exterior upgrades.
We reached more families than ever before across Maine and beyond, and our programs and services saved $2.3 million in lodging and meals for families along their child’s healthcare journey. From the warm meals prepared by volunteers to countless comfortable beds to in-hospital respite, our Houses are built on love and resilience.
This inaugural issue of The Love Letter offers insight into our impact in 2024 and our plans for the coming year. Whether you’re a long-time friend of the House or a newcomer to our mission, we invite you to get involved, attend our events, ask questions, and visit us — our doors are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Because of YOU, families in crisis find comfort, community, and hope at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. Thank you for being a part of our extended family.
With gratitude,

Julie Mulkern Chief Executive Officer

Ron Lydick President, Board of Directors

Meet the Obie Family
For the Obies, Lydia, Devin, and their two sons, the journey to grow their family was marked by heartbreak and hope. In 2022 and 2023, they endured the pain of two miscarriages—one nearly costing Lydia her life. When they learned they were expecting again, it was a surprise—but an even bigger one came when doctors discovered twins were on the way. The Obies met this news with joy and excitement, but also with the understandable fear of loss.
The pregnancy was high-risk. The babies were mono-di twins— identical, sharing a placenta but in separate sacs. Appointments in Portland became a regular part of their routine, building a connection to a city that would soon mean even more. At 24 weeks, things took a turn. Baby B’s cord flow became irregular, and mom was admitted to the hospital under constant monitoring. On March 6, 2024, just 27 weeks pregnant, she was rushed into an emergency C-section. Baby A and Baby B—named Hazel-Jo and Gaia—arrived safely, both letting out strong cries. One baby even grabbed a doctor’s finger!
With a long NICU stay ahead, the family was introduced to the Portland Ronald McDonald House. Discharged just days later, the Obies arrived to a warm welcome from Shanna, who had arranged a ground-floor room to accommodate Lydia’s healing body. They were in it for the long haul—113 days at the House, while Gaia and Hazel-Jo spent 116 days in the hospital.
The Ronald McDonald House was more than a place to stay. It was a lifeline. Meals, shuttles, toys for Calyx and Jacob, their 5- and 2-year-old sons, and above all, kindness, made their experience bearable. Staff like Shanna and Gail offered comfort, conversation, and thoughtful care. Calyx formed a special bond with them, still asking to visit a year later.
Without the House, living 90 minutes away, the Obies might have missed precious time with their girls. Instead, they found a home full of compassion and community—a place forever in their hearts.

Volunteers Matter
Volunteer Spotlight: Hami
Hi, I’m Hamilton—but my friends call me Hami. I’m a Great Pyrenees mix of pure fluff. From early on, my humans saw something special in me. We started puppy classes, and that’s when they realized I might be great at something called “therapy work.” With the help of an awesome trainer, we focused on building my confidence and learning the ropes. Then came the big test with Pet Partners—and we nailed it on the first try!
Since May 2024, I’ve been volunteering with my dad every other Wednesday night at the House in Portland. I love walking through the doors and seeing who’s there. I’m known for giving paws, sharing kisses, and flopping over for belly rubs (because let’s be honest—gravity always wins). I also consider myself Head of Kitchen Floor Clean-Up.
One moment I’ll never forget: a guest walked through the front door, knelt down, and hugged me without saying a word. We just sat like that for a while. That’s when I knew—this job is important.
When I’m off the clock, you’ll find me on the beach, cuddling on the couch, chasing backyard squirrels, or greeting all my favorite neighbors on walks. If you ever want to know more about therapy dog life, or how to get involved, my dad would love to chat: cameronmleblanc@gmail.com. I’ll just be over here... melting into the floor for more belly rubs.
Love, Hami

They organized successful fundraisers in Arkansas and are looking forward to hosting their first RMHC Maine fundraising event this August! In 2024, they received the prestigious Dr. Audrey Evans Award of Excellence for their dedication to RMHC programs. They are true ambassadors of RMHC who go above and beyond to share their support in every way.

Our Impact Strategy

Why?
Separation during hospitalization is traumatic for children and families— with long-term adverse outcomes for both, buffered by parental involvement.
• Hospital safety, quality, and care are improved when families are present and actively involved in their child’s care.

• Families need physical, educational, and psychological support to be present and involved in their child’s care.
How?
Serve more families, better
Understand the unique needs of Maine families and enhance familycentered services to support children and their caregivers.

Enhance Collaboration
Strive for excellence in our programs by working with healthcare, community, corporate, and nonprofit partners statewide.

Who?
We are family centered. We are a home away from home. We are a source of nourishment. We are volunteer powered. We are a bridge to healthcare and healing. We are data driven. We are community minded. We are partnership focused. We are Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine.
Drive
Engagement
Elevate and clarify our brand in the community, advocate for our mission, and diversify our funding.

Prioritize People
Attract the very best talent to support Maine families and support a well-being and a healthy workplace.
