Install, use, and maintain per Fisher instructions and all applicable federal, state, and local laws and codes.

The vent (or vent assembly) on the shutoff must remain unobstructed-check the vent opening after a freezing rain, sleet storm, or heavy snow.

Also immediately check the service regulator if appliance lights fail to stay on, gas can be smelled, or any other abnormal situation occurs.

Introduction Type Y510 is used on low pressure gas systems to shutoff gas supply if pressure to the appliances in the building being served drops below the set point of the Y510. The unit will also close if there is a loss or near loss of supply pressure or if a pipeline failure downstream of the Y510 causes a flow which exceeds the Y510 capacity. Inlet pressure must not exceed 1 psig, and the Y510 must never be used as a service regulator.

installations. The installation should be adequately protected from vehicular traffic. Only personnel trained in the proper procedures, codes, standards, etc. should install or service this equipment.

Before installing the shutoff, check for damage which might have occured in shipment. Also check for dirt or foreign matter which may have accumulated in the shutoff body or in the pipeline. Apply pipe compound to the male threads of the pipeline and install the Y510 so that flow is in the direction indicated by the arrow cast on the body.

The actuator portion of the shutoff is connected to the body with two cap screws (key 18). By loosening these screws, the diaphragm case assembly can be rotated to any position relative to the body. Also, removing cap screws and nuts (key 14 and 15) permits rotating the spring case assembly (key 1) so that the vent can be pointed downward.

Replace the unit if water gets into the spring case or the lower casing. Do not install the shutoff in a location where there can be excessive water accumulation, such as directly beneath a down spout.

Vent WARNING All vents should be kept open to permit free flow to atmosphere.

WARNING

Type Y510 The Y510 has a spring case vent which is 3/4 inch FNPT and screened to prevent insects or foreign material from entering. On indoor installations, the vent should be piped to the outside of the building. Remove the retaining ring and screen from the vent connection and connect vent piping from that connection to the outdoors. Vent piping should be of as large a diameter as practicable, be as short as possible, and have a minimum number of bends and elbows. Install a weather and insect resistant vent assembly on the outside end of the pipe, such as Fisher Type Y602 series. The same installation precautions apply to vent assemblies as the integral vents covered above.

A program of regular inspection of the vent opening should be established to see that it has not become plugged by foreign material. On some installations, such as in areas of heavy snow fall, it may be necessary to install the shutoff beneath a protective hood. If other protection is provided from the elements, the vent should be pointing or sloping down sufficiently to allow any condensate to drain.

Low Pressure Shutoff To place the Y510 in operation, unscrew the closing cap and quickly lift up on the reset stem (key 14, figure 2).

This pulls the diaphragm upward and pushes the shutoff disk (key 27) into the opened position. If pressure drops beneath the Y510 diaphragm, the spring moves the diaphragm downward, allowing the spacer rod (key 28) to move away from the shutoff disk. The disk spring (key 26) can then close the disk against the orifice.

Note Flow exceeding the Y510 capacity will also close the shutoff mechanism.

The unit can be returned to operation by lifting up on the reset stem. Be sure the system is correct before resetting the Y510. Spring adjustment is not necessary on the Y510 after it has closed. Do not forget to light the pilot lights after resetting.

Downstream restrictions, including pipe size and length, affect the operation of the shutoff mechanism in cases of downstream failure or loss of inlet pressure and must be sized accordingly.

To test the Y510 for shutoff in the event of a piping break downstream of the unit, pressure the system and simulate a break at the farthest point in the downstream system.

There should be a sudden decrease in flow, indicating the shutoff mechanism has closed and is working properly.

CAUTION Make the shutoff test only under conditions where the escaping gas will not create a hazard, such as with a large hose connected to the simulated break with the hose outlet extending to a safe location.

Adjustment The standard shutoff setting is 4 inches W.C. To adjust the shutoff point, remove the closing cap (key 4) and turn the adjusting screw (key 3). Rotating it clockwise (farther into the spring barrel) increases the shutoff set point.

Maintenance WARNING Before disassembling the shutoff, isolate it from the system pressure and release pressure from the body outlet. Units that have been disassembled for repair must be tested for proper operation before being returned to service. Only parts manufactured by Fisher should be used for repairing Fisher equipment.

Refer to figure 2.

Disassembly to Replace Diaphragm 1. Remove the closing cap (key 4) and adjusting screw (key 3).

2. Take the spring case screws (key 14) out of the spring case (key 1), and remove the spring case and spring (key 2).

3. Lift the diaphragm assembly slightly, and slide it away from the lever (key 10), so that the pusher post (key 8) releases the lever.

4. Remove the reset stem (key 24) and the spring seat (key 6) to make the disassembly complete.

5. Reassemble in the reverse order of the above procedures. Before tightening the reset stem (key 24) into the pusher post (key 8) to secure the new diaphragm, place the loosely assembled diaphragm and head unit into position in the lower casing (key 9A), being sure the pusher post is properly hooked on the lever (key 10).

Rotate the diaphragm so that diaphragm and lower casing holes align. Tighten the reset stem (key 24) and proceed with reassembly.

CAUTION Before tightening cap screws (key 14), replace the spring and adjusting screw. Turn the adjusting screw to about mid position. This will stretch the oversized diaphragm to ensure slack in the assembled diaphragm. The slack created by this method is necessary for good operation. Be sure the diaphragm does not fold over at the flange when reassembling.

Disassembly to Replace Valve Disk The shutoff disk holder assembly (key 27) can be reached for inspection or repair by unscrewing the back body cap (key 30). After reassembly, check the unit for leaks and readjust to the desired shutoff set point.

Closing Cap Type number, spring setting, and date manufactured are stamped on the closing cap. Be sure to give this information in any correspondence about the equipment.
