Using this Guide

1.1

This Guide Supports FlowStor Data Archive Software Version 1.0 Refer to this Quick-Start guide for the information you need to install and start using FlowStor Data Archive Software Version 1.0.

Products such as this software are revised periodically to support your changing process control requirements. Software online help resources and printed documentation are also revised to reflect software improvements and version upgrades. Before using any online help resource or printed document, be sure the online resource or document supports your specific software version.

Contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative if you have questions about specific software products, software upgrades, online resources, or documentation.

Note To determine the software version number, refer first to the version number printed on the software installation disks. If you are a registered user of the software, start the software and, when the first window appears, the version number is displayed as part of the software title.

Also, after logging in, click the Help menu title in the menu bar at the top of the window. Select About from the Help pull-down menu to open the software’s About window. The software version number is reported in the About window.

What is FlowStor Data Archive Software?

FlowStor Data Archive Software is a Windows-compatible program developed for the transfer, compression, storage, retrieval, and analysis of data generated by the FlowScanner valve diagnostic system. Use FlowStor software to transfer data from a FlowScanner system. The data may be transferred either from a floppy disk or directly from the FlowScanner system by connecting the personal computer running FlowStor software to the FlowScanner system.

The FlowStor software transfers the data to another storage area, such as the hard disk drive of a desktop personal computer, or to a storage device on a computer network.

With FlowStor software, you transfer and store FlowScanner test data in compressed or uncompressed format. During the transfer and storage process, FlowStor software also creates information databases that allow you to search stored data and retrieve specific tests. For example, each valve test record is assigned a nametag.

for individual valves to the assigned nametag. Then, you can use the nametag to recall test data for analysis to determine valve performance changes and support a preventative maintenance schedule.

When you transfer data from the FlowScanner system, FlowStor software preserves the data in the proprietary FlowScanner format while creating database(s) in formats used by popular database programs such as dBase, Foxpro, and Microsoft Access. You specify uncompressed or compressed storage of the original FlowScanner data.

Through the FlowStor database functions, the software supports rapid access to stored data using “query by example.� Search for data using parameters such as tag number, valve serial number, manufacturer, and valve type. With the purchase of multiple-user licenses, you can use FlowStor software on a network. Software security features allow the system administrator to control access to archival databases.

Access the expertise of the Fisher Controls MRO Field Support Group using the communications function in FlowStor software.

Through a modem, FlowStor software supports an automatic link to a private, secure bulletin board system (BBS) operated by the Field Support Group. From FlowStor software, you send FlowScanner data directly to the BBS for analysis by Fisher Controls factory engineers and service specialists.

Software License Description FlowStor software is licensed to you by Fisher Controls under a single-user software license. You agree to the license when you open the disk package. Refer to the license agreement in appendix B. A single-user license limits your use of this software to one copy available to one user on one personal computer. While the software supports multiple users in a network environment, making FlowStor software available to more than one user at a time by installing the software on a network violates the single-user license. Also, you cannot copy FlowStor software onto more than one personal computer for more than one user.

To use the software on more than one machine or over a network, you must upgrade your single-user license. If multiple users need access to the software, please obtain additional single-user licenses or a multiple-user license.

Who Should Use this Guide?

This guide is intended for a single, licensed user of FlowStor Data Archive Software Version 1.0. To use the software to support multiple users in a network environment, a proper multiple–user license is required. Do not copy this guide for additional licensed users; contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative for additional copies of this guide.

Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, operate, and maintain this software, the personal computer or computer network running FlowStor software, the FlowScanner valve diagnostic system, and process plant equipment. If you have any questions concerning the instructions in this user guide, contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative.

Use this guide if you will be responsible for installing FlowStor software on a single personal computer (PC) or network, using FlowStor software to copy, store, and manage the FlowScanner test data, or managing other users sharing a personal computer or operating FlowStor software over a network under a multiple–user license or site license agreement.

specialist, you are encouraged to review this guide before attempting to transfer data from a FlowScanner system, copy existing data, or use any of the other FlowStor software functions. Also, engineers and technicians who perform valve diagnostic testing using the FlowScanner valve diagnostic system should review printed documentation for the FlowScanner system.

To run FlowStor software, you must be familiar with the personal computer hardware and software operating system that you will use.

The online help resource and this guide frequently refer to basic computer user actions such as using a mouse to move a pointer within the screen display, saving data to a floppy disk, and starting and stopping software functions. Keep hardware and software user manuals, guides, and other documentation near the personal computer for reference, if necessary.

Using this Guide Effectively This Quick-Start Guide provides detailed instructions for use of FlowStor software in several specific data transfer and retrieval tasks. These tasks are described in section 1.6.1. Refer to section 1.6.2 for a description of each section of this guide.

1.6.1

Tasks Supported by this Guide FlowStor software is used for two functions: 1. Transfer of FlowScanner system test data from a data source to a data destination.

2. Location of data at various data destinations and retrieval of data for analysis.

Transfer of FlowScanner system test data: The data source may be a floppy disk containing data from a FlowScanner system or data may be transferred directly from the FlowScanner system to a personal computer by use of FSLink software and connecting cable. The data destination may be the disk drive of the personal computer where FlowStor software is running or data may be stored on a device reached via a computer network.

To accomplish data transfer, a data destination must be created. A data destination consists of a database and test group. To create a

database and test group using FlowStor software, follow the instructions in Section 2. To transfer data, follow the instructions in Section 3.

Location of stored data: Search data destinations using detailed test record descriptions. Substitute a wildcard character to broaden a search. Follow the instructions in Section 4 to accomplish a data search.

If the FlowStor software is installed on your personal computer and is configured for use without a user name and password, go directly to the appropriate section and locate the instructions for the specific task you must perform with the FlowStor software. If you must load the FlowStor software to your personal computer before using it, follow the instructions in Appendix A.

1.6.2

Guide Sections This guide contains the following sections. Refer to the Contents pages for a complete listing of section and subsection headings.

Section 1—Using This Guide: Describes this user guide and the FlowStor software.

Section 2—Creating the Database: Explains the immediate steps required to start and use the FlowStor software. Instructions in Section 2 presume that FlowStor software has been properly installed, the system manager has entered user names and passwords to permit logging on, if required, and the process engineer or valve technician running FlowStor software is an experienced computer user.

Section 3—Transferring FlowScanner Test Data and Nametag Information: Explains the steps required to select a data source and complete the data transfer process.

Section 4—Searching for Stored Data: Describes use of the data search and reporting functions of the software.

Appendix A—Installing FlowStor Software: Describes how to install the software on a single personal computer under a single-user license.

Conventions Used in the Online Help Resource and this Guide When you have a question about FlowStor software, first consult either the online help resource or printed documentation such as this guide. For effective use of the online resource and printed documentation, familiarize yourself with the following conventions.

Instructions may refer you to ‘‘the system administrator.’’

The system administrator is that person designated to install FlowStor software, establish passwords and other data security measures, and generally support computer users. A system administrator is an experienced computer user who can assist you if you encounter computer problems. For example, an instruction to ask for assistance will say “Contact your system administrator.”

Instructions presume that you are a computer user with knowledge of computer hardware and software. Typical computer operations involve entering commands from the keyboard and use of a mouse to make selections onscreen.

In keyboard instructions, the word ‘‘enter” means that you must type the command shown and press the Enter or Return key to process the command. For example, an instruction might ask you to enter a numerical value by saying “Enter the value in the data entry field.”

The word “press” indicates that you must press a specific key.

For example, to display a help topic, an instruction might ask you to “Press F1 for more information.”

Instructions requiring use of the mouse to make a selection onscreen will say, for example, “Double-click the FlowStor software icon to start the software.”

Specific file names appear in ALL CAPS. For example, the default database created during FlowStor software installation is named DEFAULT.MDB. Unique terms, abbreviations, and acronyms are explained in print documentation the first time they are used.

For example, the database that you create or select for FlowScanner data is called the active database in the online resource and in this document.

In the online help resource, terms, abbreviations, and acronyms are defined in a glossary. Also, when the help resource displays a help topic, defined terms appear in green text, with dashed or solid underlining. Use your mouse to move the screen pointer to the green text and click the left mouse button once to display a definition or explanation of the defined term.

FlowStor software features onscreen context–sensitivity which allows you to display a specific help topic by pressing the F1 key. After you open the online help resource, use the Find–Plus function to search all help topics for the information you want.

A unique help topic is available for each button and data entry field that appear in the FlowStor window. When you start FlowStor software or open a new FlowStor window, a feature such as a button or field is highlighted. Press the Tab key to move the highlight from feature to feature. When you highlight a feature, press the F1 key to display the help topic for the highlighted feature.

Click the Find–Plus button in the help window to display the help file text search function. Enter a word or phrase and this function searches all help topics and displays those topics containing the word or phrase.

Maintenance hints, notes, cautions, and warnings appear in both the online help resource and this guide as follows:

Creating the Database Note This section describes how to start FlowStor software and use basic functions. To start the software: You must have a proper user name and password to enter if required by the installed configuration of the FlowStor software. Contact your system administrator if you need a user name and password.

You must be able to find the FlowStor software icon within the personal computer screen display. Contact your system administrator if you are unable to find the icon or if you have any other problems starting the FlowStor software.

What’s In This Section of the Guide?

This section of the Quick-Start guide contains the following information: Subsection 2.2—describes how to start the FlowStor software.

The instructions include a step telling how to enter your user name and password if this information is required by the installed configuration of the software.

Subsection 2.3—explains how to create a database and test group for information created when you transfer FlowScanner test data. During installation, a default database, DEFAULT.MDB, is created in Microsoft Access format. You may use this database or create a new one.

Starting the FlowStor Software 1. Find the FlowStor software icon within the personal computer screen display. You may find the icon in the FlowScanner applications group, on the desktop, or in another location specified by the system administrator. Contact your system administrator if you are unable to find the icon or if you have any other problems starting the software.

2. Double-click on the FlowStor software icon to start the software.

Note When the system administrator installs the FlowStor software, the administrator may select one of two software configurations: A user may start the software without entering a user name and password or A user must have a valid user name and password to enter after starting the software.

If the system administrator has configured the software to require a user name and password, you must enter the information in the User Log In window that appears after you start the software.

3. If necessary, type your user name and password as defined by the system administrator in the UserName and Password fields in the User Log In window. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password.

4. If you properly typed your user name and password and then clicked the Continue button, the User Log In window will disappear and, in the lower right corner of the opening screen, the FlowStor software will display three large buttons:

Copy or Add Test Data—Click this button to go to the data management screen. Here, you can use FlowStor functions to create new databases for FlowScanner data or select an existing one to serve as the active database to receive FlowScanner data.

Then, transfer data from a source, such as a floppy disk, disk drive, network drive, or directly from the FlowScanner system to the active database. See Section 2.3 for instructions on creating a new database or selecting an existing database for data transfer and archival storage. See Section 3.5 for instructions for transferring FlowScanner system nametag and test data to an active database from a data source such as a 3-1/2 inch floppy disk.

Find/View Archive Data—Click this button to go directly to the test record display screen. Here, you can use FlowStor software’s data search and sort functions to manage all FlowScanner test data.

Search by any of the listed nametag data to view individual test records or group similar records into lists. FlowStor software also provides a data summary spreadsheet. This functional area also allows you to start a separate program, RatRace software, to view data. See section 4.2 for data management instructions.

Exit FlowStor—Click this button to exit the FlowStor software.

2.3

Creating the Database and Test Group With FlowStor software, you create databases to store information derived from FlowScanner diagnostic tests. The database(s) that you create using FlowStor software hold information about FlowScanner valve diagnostic tests including nametag information.

This information is derived by the FlowStor software from test data when the data is transferred from the data source such as a floppy disk from the FlowScanner system. Actual test data is stored in uncompressed or compressed format in a separate directory.

However, a copy of the test data can be stored in a table in the database.

2.3.1

Planning the Storage of a Database and Test Data The FlowScanner valve diagnostic system is used to create a detailed description of a complete control valve package. The

description includes nametag information and test data. FlowStor software, during data transfer, combines and compresses the FlowScanner data files into a single file, which is stored as a DOS file in the directory of your choice. While the FlowStor software is transferring and combining test data, a database is created as a separate file from the test data.

The database and test data files are normally stored in different directories and may be stored on different drives. You can maintain test data files in several different directories and in directories on different drives. FlowStor software, through the database functions, maintains all test details including a path to the stored data.

For example, the directories for data storage might be organized by plant, unit, and year of test to keep a reasonable number of data files in each subdirectory. Yet, a single FlowStor database could combine all test result information for analysis. Using FlowStor database functions, you could quickly find the stored data files because a field in the record of results for each test stores the full path to the test data.

On the other hand, you can create separate databases for separate tests. FlowStor functions allow you to quickly switch between different databases to find data. Instead of organizing all test data in one database, you may want to keep separate databases for each plant or operating unit. This reduces the size of the database so searches and other operations are faster.

Before proceeding with the instructions to create a database, determine how you will maintain test data.

2.3.2

Creating a Database When FlowStor software is installed, a default database (DEFAULT.MDB) is created in Microsoft Access format in the FlowStor\Archives directory. If you don’t create another database, the information derived from your test data will be stored in this database even if the test data is stored in a different destination directory. If you want to place a database in another location or use one in a format other than Microsoft Access, you must first create the database.

1. Start FlowStor software and enter your user name and password, if required. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password.

2. Click the Copy or Add Data button to open the FlowStor data transfer window. In the menu bar at the top of the FlowStor window, click the Set Archive menu title and then, from the pull–down menu, select Archive Database Selection. The FlowStor Archive Databases window appears.

Note FlowStor software connects to one database at a time.

In this guide and in the online help resource, the connected database is called the “active” database.

3. When the FlowStor Archive Databases window appears, information for the active database is displayed in the data fields.

If you are using FlowStor for the first time, the default database, created when FlowStor software was installed, is the active database. Information describing the default database is displayed. If another database is active, information for that database appears in the data fields.

If other databases have been previously created, you may review existing database information in the List of Databases page.

Click the List of Databases tab to display the list. Click the Database Description tab to return.

4. To create a new database, click the Create New Database button.

The button title changes to Save and Create while the FlowStor software clears the Database Description and Name fields and presents a drive pull–down list and directories display.

5. In the Database Description data entry field, type a descriptive database name, up to 40 characters in length. The name can be any combination of letters, numbers, and spaces such as Fisher Controls Sliding Stem Valves or Hydro Unit No. 1 Valves.

6. Select the drive for the new database from the drive pull–down menu. Open the menu by clicking on the down arrow button. Select

the directory for the new database in the directories display. Your selections appear in the Path to Database field.

Note In the Database Name field, you enter the name used by the FlowStor software when creating database files.

Enter only an eight-character filename such as DATANAME, FCVALVES, etc. Do not add the three-character suffix or file extension.

Correct: DATANAME Not Correct: DATANAME.MDB FlowStor software adds the suffix when the database is created. The suffix indicates the database format.

7. Select the Database Name field and enter an eight-character filename. Do not enter a suffix or file extension to the database filename.

Note FlowStor software creates a new directory for database files if a specific database format requires a directory.

For example, if you enter ROTARYS as the database name and select dBase IV as the database type (format), when you click the Create Database button, FlowStor software will create a directory named ROTARYS and will create files such as JOBDATA.DBF and TESTDATA.DBF in the directory.

Creating a Test Group After creating a database and making it active, create a test group to hold information common to a group of tests. Creation of a test group allows you to identify a group of related FlowScanner system tests when you transfer the data. Then, when you wish to analyze stored data, you will be able to find those tests by searching for specific test group information using FlowStor search and retrieval functions.

information allows you to match similar tests from different test groups when you search for them in the future.

Note FlowStor software uses one test group during data transfer. In this guide and in the online help resource, the test group being used is called the “active” test group.

When FlowStor software is installed on a personal computer, a default test group is created when the default database is created. If a new test group is not created, the default group receives information about test data when data is transfered. When you make a database active without making active a test group, FlowStor software makes the default test group active to link to new data. To create a test group: 1. Start FlowStor software and enter your user name and password, if required. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password.

2. Click the Copy or Add Data button to open the FlowStor data transfer window. In the menu bar at the top of the FlowStor window, click the Set Archive menu title and then, from the pull-down menu, select Test Group Details/Selection. The FlowStor Test Group Record window appears.

3. To create a new test group, click on the Create New Group button. FlowStor software displays a blank Test Group Record page and the cursor appears in the Group Reference field. Fill in at least a group number. The other fields can be left blank or filled later.

4. Click the “Save and Create” button to create the test group.

5. Click the “Use and Return” button to make this test group active.

The group number generated by FlowStor software for this group will now be used when data is stored until you select another test group.

3.1

What’s In This Section of the Guide?

Subsection 3.2—explains how to select a data source for the transfer process.

Subsection 3.3—describes updating nametag information before transferring data. During data transfer, nametag information is saved in the database.

Subsection 3.4 and 3.5—describe the data transfer process beginning with selection of a data storage location. Specifically, subsection 3.5 provides step-by-step instructions for data transfer.

3.2

Selecting a Data Source Control valve test data, collected by a FlowScanner valve diagnostic system, can be stored on a standard, 3-1/2 inch floppy disk for transfer to a data destination. A floppy disk, formatted to provide either 720 Kbytes or 1.44 Mbytes of storage space, is placed in the floppy disk drive of the FlowScanner system. Data is saved to the floppy disk and then the data is transferred from the FlowScanner system by moving the floppy disk to the computer running FlowStor software. A disk with test data from the FlowScanner system can be inserted into the floppy disk drive of the computer running FlowStor software and the data transferred from the floppy disk to a storage device such as a disk drive.

In FlowStor software, when you click the Copy or Add Data button, the data transfer screen appears. Follow the procedures in this subsection to locate data on the floppy disk (data source). Before transferring data, review nametag information.

In reading the following instructions, assume that the personal computer you will use is turned on and FlowStor software is properly loaded. To locate data contained on a floppy disk: 1. Start FlowStor software and enter your user name and password, if required. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password.

2. Click the Copy or Add Data button to open the FlowStor data transfer function.

3. Insert the floppy disk into the personal computer’s A:\ drive.

4. On the left side of the Copy or Add Data screen, locate the data source drive pull-down list. Click the pull-down arrow button and select A:\ from the list. If the personal computer does not immediately access the A:\ drive, click the Refresh button.

5. In the display area below the drive letter pull-down list, FlowStor software displays a list of directories found on the floppy disk.

FlowStor software also displays all file names found in the root directory of the disk. In the spreadsheet at the bottom of the screen, FlowStor software displays nametag data from all uncompressed data files in the root directory.

Note If you select a floppy disk as the source and then change disks, click the Refresh button again and the personal computer will read the new disk and display the directories and files found on it.

6. If the floppy disk contains several directories of data, select the source directory by double-clicking on the directory name. FlowStor software displays a list of all files in that directory.

When test data, in compressed format is found, FlowStor opens a dialog box asking if you want the software to search the compressed data and build a test list. Click OK and FlowStor software then fills in the spreadsheet that runs across the bottom of the Copy or Add Data screen.

The spreadsheet gives a summary for each test found in the source directory. The summaries include information such as valve type (rotary or sliding stem), test name, valve tag, test setup, file name, test type, test comments, and serial number.

7. In the Source Files area, click the ZIPPED FS Files option button to display only compressed data files. FlowStor software then reads the summary files of all compressed test data and fills in the spreadsheet at the bottom of the Copy or Add Data screen. Review the information displayed in the spreadsheet to determine if the directory on the floppy disk will be the data source.

Updating Nametag Information Before Data Transfer When you transfer test data, FlowStor software places nametag information in the database for your use when you search for stored test data. Accurate and detailed nametag information supports effective data search and recall.

1. Select the directory on the floppy disk to use as the data source and then click the Nametags button in the button bar at the top of the window. The FlowStor Nametags window appears.

2. Review nametag data by clicking on the tabs in the Nametags window. To change information in a field or add information to a blank field, click the Allow Changes button, click on the field, and make the change or enter new information. Then, click the Accept Change button.

3. After review nametag information, click the Return button to return to the data transfer window.

3.4

Selecting a Test Data Storage Location FlowStor software normally combines and compresses the FlowScanner raw data files into a single file, which it stores as a DOS file in the disk and subdirectory of your choice. The FlowStor database is a separate file from the test data. The database and test data files are normally stored in different directories and even may be on different drives.

This allows you to store the test data files in several different subdirectories, or different drives, and still keep the test details combined in a single FlowStor database. For example, the subdirectories might be organized by plant, unit, and year of test to keep a reasonable number of data files in each subdirectory. Yet a single FlowStor database could combine all the test results information and still be able to instantly find the stored data files, because a field in the record of results for that test stores the full path to the test data.

However, you can also keep tests in different FlowStor archive databases and quickly switch between them to find data. For example, you may want to keep separate databases for each plant or operating unit. This reduces the size of the database so searches and other operations are faster.

Transferring Nametag Information And Test Data The FlowScanner valve diagnostic system performs comprehensive testing on pneumatic control valve packages and stores nametag

and test data on an internal disk drive or standard, 3–1/2 inch floppy disk. Data can be transferred from the FlowScanner system directly using the FSLinkt software and connecting cable or data can be transferred on a floppy disk.

After creating a database for information storage, you must create a test group.

3.5.1

Transferring FlowScanner Data From A Floppy Disk A floppy disk, formatted to provide either 720 KB or 1.44 MB of storage space, is placed in the floppy disk drive of the FlowScanner system. Data saved to the floppy disk is then transferred from the FlowScanner system by moving the floppy disk to the computer running FlowStor software. A disk with test data from the FlowScanner system can be inserted into the floppy disk drive of the computer running FlowStor software and the data transferred from the floppy disk to a storage device such as a hard disk drive.

In FlowStor software, when you click the Copy or Add Data button, the data transfer screen appears. Follow the procedures in this section to transfer data from the Data Source drive and directory, where test data is found, to the Data Destination drive and directory.

You can transfer data directly from the data source in the same format or you can compress the data during transfer.

In reading the following instructions, assume that the personal computer you will use is turned on, FlowStor software is properly loaded, and a configuration setting floppy disk drive A as the source drive has been saved by the system administrator or a previous user. To transfer data contained on a floppy disk: 1. Before starting FlowStor software, insert the floppy disk into the personal computer’s A:\ drive.

2. Start FlowStor software and enter your user name and password, if required. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password. As the FlowStor software starts up, the software will automatically read drive A:\.

3. Click the Copy or Add Data button to open the FlowStor data transfer function. On the left side of the Copy or Add Data screen, be sure that drive A appears as the source drive. If necessary, change the source drive by opening the Data Source disk drive pull–down list. Click the list arrow button to open the pull–down list and select

the source drive by highlighting the drive letter in the list. Typically, the source drive is drive A:\.

4. If you had to change the source drive to A:\, the computer running FlowStor software will read the floppy disk and then FlowStor software will display a list of directories found on the floppy disk.

FlowStor software also displays all file names found in the root directory of the disk. In the spreadsheet at the bottom of the screen, FlowStor software displays nametag data from all uncompressed data files in the root directory.

Note If you select a floppy disk as the source and then change disks, click the Refresh button found above the source drive list box and the computer will read the new disk and display the directories.

5. If the floppy disk contains several directories of data, select a source directory by double-clicking on the directory name. FlowStor software displays a list of all files in that directory. All file names in the directory are listed in the small display window located below the Data Source display on the left side of the Copy or Add Data screen.

Note When FlowStor software was installed, the installation program created a directory, TESTDATA, under the FLOWSTOR directory. The TESTDATA directory serves as a default location to store test data. However, you can click the Make Directory button to create new directories in either the FLOWSTOR directory or another directory.

7. In the Data Destination area on the right side of the Copy or Add Data screen, a default directory, FLOWSTOR\TESTDATA, is displayed. Files in the default directory are displayed in the area below the directory window. At this point, you may select a different directory, different drive, or create a new directory.

To select a different drive, click on the pull-down list arrow button at the right of the drive display field in the Data Destination area. Select a different drive from the list by highlighting the drive letter. The new drive letter and directories appear in the display area below the directory letter field.

To select a directory, select the directory name displayed below the drive letter field.

To create a new directory, click the Make Dir button. The FlowStor software displays the Directory Operations window. To create a new sub-directory on a different drive, select the drive letter by clicking the pull-down list arrow button on the right side of the drive letter field. Select the drive letter by highlighting it. Directories on the selected drive are displayed below the drive letter field. Select the drive letter to create a new directory or select a directory name where you wish to create a new directory. Type in the new name in the New Directory Name field and click the OK button. FlowStor software creates the new directory on the selected drive and the new directory appears as the data destination.

8. Once you have selected the source and destination locations, FlowStor can copy data in different ways:

Direct copy of test files in FlowScanner format. This function copies all test files “as is” to the destination. Although this function uses the most disk space, it is useful when copying test data from one drive to another. No database summary is kept of direct copy operations. To direct copy test files, click the Add Test Details to Archive Database check box to deselect this step in the copy process. Then, under Destination files, click the FlowScan Format option. To begin copying, click the Do NOT Database But Copy Raw Files to Destination button above the blue arrow.

Note The compressed file format described below uses approximately 65% less disk space. The compressed file format is compatible with the PKZIP software utility, version 2.04.

Copy test files and store them in compressed file format. This function compresses all data files for a specific test and stores them in the file TESTNAME.ZPD on the destination drive. If you simply want to move data from one drive to another in compressed format, you can copy data without making database records of the information. To copy and compress test files, under the destination files, click on the ZIPPED FS Format option. To begin copying, click the Do NOT Database Results But Zip-Copy Files to Destination button above the blue arrow.

Add Test Details to Archive Database. When this option is selected, the data will be “zip copied.” However, the details of the nametag and test will be entered into a database for reporting and later searching to find the test data.

Redundant copy of test data in database. When this option is selected, the data will be “zip copied.” However, the details of the nametag and test will be entered into a database for reporting and later searching to find the test data. A second copy of the test data also will be saved as part of the database record.

Transferring Information

Transferring FlowScanner Data From a FlowScanner System Using FSLinkt Software and Connecting Cable Use of FSLink software and cable allows direct transfer of test data from the FlowScanner system disk drive without handling floppy disks. The FSLink cable establishes a connection between the parallel printer ports of the FlowScanner system and the personal computer running FlowStor software.

The FSLink software requires that the FlowScanner system run Microsoft DOS 6.22. FSLink software is not compatible with other operating software such as DRDOS or Novell DOS. The Utilities disk provided with FlowStor software supports an upgrade of the FlowScanner system’s operating software by providing new CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for DOS 6.22. After upgrading DOS, run the INSTALL program on the Utilities disk to update the FlowScanner files. This process also installs the FSLINK software on the FlowScanner system.

FSLINK software on the FlowScanner system first checks the FlowScanner system operating default files to find the default data drive. Then, the software creates a special identification file on the data drive so FlowStor software will be able to automatically find stored data. The identification file also identifies the FlowScanner system by serial number so this information can be saved in a FlowStor database.

When you install FlowStor software on a personal computer, the installation program modifies the CONFIG.SYS file by adding a driver for the FSLink software. To confirm that the personal computer is ready to run FSLink software, check the system configuration by starting FlowStor software, clicking the Copy or Add Test Data button and then selecting Setup FlowScanner Link from the Configure menu at the top of the FlowStor data transfer screen. Exit both FlowStor software and Windows operating system and restart the personal computer to make the changes active.

To use the FSLink connection when the FlowScanner system and the personal computer running FlowStor software have been set up, first connect the FlowScanner system to the personal computer with the FSLink cable. Then, run FSLINK software on the FlowScanner system to “publish” the data for FlowStor software to find.

Start FlowStor software and, in the data transfer window, click on the FlowScanner Link button above the Source Drive window. Follow onscreen instructions and FlowStor software will identify the FlowScanner source data drive, show a message: “Connected to FlowScanner (serial number),” and list the tests that it finds. You can then select and copy tests as if they were stored on the personal computer running FlowStor software.

3.6

Viewing and Overlaying Test Data Before transferring the data to the database, you may wish to view the FlowScanner data. RatRace graphical data display software allows you to directly view test data and do overlays of existing data for comparison of valve performance. If you have linked FlowStor to RatRace, you can directly view and overlay archived data graphs.

To view a single test, select the test record and click the Base button to define the data as “BaseLine” data. Then click the Graphs button.

The data will be pulled from the archive and sent to RatRace, and the Display graph screen will appear.

If RatRace (rather than FlowAux) is installed, you can overlay a test or group of tests over the current base data. You can either add the current test to the overlay list one at a time by clicking the “overlay” button, or you can select a group of tests and up to the first 9 will be overlaid at once.

Note Remember to deselect the base test before selecting test to overlay or it will be duplicated in the overlay list.

3.7

Quick Reports A Quick Report form is provided to view and print Quick Report records while evaluating what tests should be transferred. After you have selected the tests, click on the Quick Report button. The first tab shows the general comments, recommended actions, and

4.1

What’s In This Section of the Guide?

Subsection 4.2—describes use of the Test Record window for searching stored test data and information databases.

Subsection 4.3—introduces other FlowStor software functions that support data management: the Data Summary Spreadsheet, Valve Nametags, Quick Reports, Batch Printing, and Viewing and Overlaying Test Data.

4.2

Using the Test Record Window Use the Test Record window as the starting point for the stored data searches. In this window, you can see a summary about one test record, set search criteria to find specific tests, change to spreadsheet views of test and report data, change to a search for stored nametag information, and, with RatRace Desktop Analysis software, view and overlay graphs created from stored test data.

To search for stored data: 1. Start FlowStor software and enter your user name and password, if required. Click the Continue button to process your user name and password.

2. Click the Find/View Archive Data button to go to the Find FlowStor Archive Data window. In the menu bar at the top of the window, click the Archive menu title and then, from the pull-down menu, choose Select Archive Database. The FlowStor Archive Databases window appears.

3. Click on the List of Archives tab to view a list of all data storage archives that have been created by the FlowStor software. Select the archive you wish to search and click the Make Active and Return button.

4. In the Find ... Data window, click the test record tab to display the test record page. In the test record page, click the Set Search button to clear all data fields. Enter search criteria in the data fields.

Note You can broaden a search to cover more data by the use of a wildcard character. FlowStor software recognizes the asterisk symbol as the only wildcard for a search. You can use an asterisk at either the beginning or the end of a search term. For example, if you wanted to search for test data from all Fisher Controls Design V500 valves, add the wildcard character at the beginning or end of the search term.

Either V* or *500 in a data entry field would yield all V500 valve test data entries.

5. Click the Start Search button. View all test records found in the List of Test Records page and the Summary Spreadsheet.

4.3

Other FlowStor Software Functions

4.3.1

Viewing and Overlaying Test Data RatRace graphical data display software from Fisher Controls allows you to directly view test data and do overlays of existing data for comparison of valve performance. If you have linked FlowStor to RatRace, you can directly view and overlay archived data graphs.

To view a single test, just select the test record and click on the “View Data” button. The data will be pulled from the archive and sent to RatRace, and the Display graph screen will appear.

With RatRace software installed, you can overlay a test or group of tests over the current base data. You can either add the current test to the overlay list one at a time by clicking the “overlay” button, or from the List of Tests tab you can select a group of tests and up to the first 9 will be overlaid at once.

4.3.2

Data Summary Spreadsheet The Data Summary spreadsheet is a type that can be saved to Excel format showing just the information shown. Thus you can search for

a set of tests and save the Data Summary to an Excel spreadsheet and then use Excel to create totals and statistics.

You can customize the Data Summary spreadsheet by selecting which columns to include in the spreadsheet. This lets you first search for a group of tests, then select only the columns of data you want to see, then export that to Excel to analyze. To select the desired spreadsheet columns select the Configure Spreadsheet Columns choice off the Configure menu. You can hold the Ctrl key down and click column names on or off. If you want to use this combination of columns again you can save the configuration by typing in a “save” name and clicking on the Save button. It can then be used by selecting from the drop down list.

After configuring the report columns the data summary spreadsheet will show just the columns you have selected.

4.3.3

Valve Nametags You can switch to the FlowStor Nametag database table that is active by clicking on the Nametags button. This version doesn’t search directly from the Nametag screen except by tag number or serial number. These fields automatically search (up to 5000 records) as you type in either a tag number or serial number.

The Print button will print the current nametag to the Windows default printer. To print a group of nametags at once, select the “List of Nametags” tab and select a range of tags either with the select all button or by clicking the rows at the far left edge of the row. The selected tags will be highlighted in gray.

4.3.4

Quick Reports While the FlowScanner Quick Report data is available on the Data Summary Spreadsheet, a Quick Report form is provided to view and print Quick Report records. After you have selected or searched for a range of tests, click on the Quick Report button, and the Quick Report screen appears. The first tab shows the general comments, recommended actions, and Overall Valve test results and comment.

The second page shows the Actuator and Instrument test results and comments. You can print the report by clicking on the Print button, or view the actual graphs by clicking on the Graphs button.

Searching for Stored Data

The third tab (Saved Pictures) offers some new options: If an Access database is used this page can save photos of the test setup or saved graphs complete with notation. To save an annotated graph first display the graph and add any notes. Then inverse the screen, hide the “mouse tools” to make the graph full screen, the press the Print Scrn key to save the screen to the Windows clipboard. Then exit the graph and RatRace back to this screen.

Click on “Allow Changes” and click on the Paste button next to the space where you want the picture. Then click on “Accept Changes” to complete the operation.

The pictures appear too small for much detail, so if you double–click on a picture it expands to fill the form. With the Picture expanded you can print the graph to the Windows default printer with the Print button. double-click on the picture again to return it to normal size.

4.3.5

Batch Printing of Quick Reports In the List of Reports tab you can select a range of reports by clicking on the Mark All button or by clicking the extreme left edge of the desired row: You can then print all the selected reports by clicking on the Print button and selecting to print the selected range: The reports print much faster if you choose to omit the drawn lines on the printed reports.

Software Installation Install the FlowStor software from the installation disks. Simply insert installation disk 1 in the floppy disk drive of the personal computer where FlowStor software will be used. Run the setup program, SETUP.EXE. You will be prompted by the setup program to specify a drive and directory for the FlowStor program. Enter the location for the software or allow the setup program to create a default directory and place the software.

The setup program presumes that Microsoft Windows 3.1 is the operating system for the personal computer where FlowStor software will be used. The setup program will check for a specific command, the DOS Share command, in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If the Share command is not there, the setup program will prompt you with an offer to revise the file for you. While the Share command is needed with Windows 3.1, it is not needed with Windows For Workgroups 3.11 or Windows 95. If you are running either of these operating systems, direct the setup program not to add the Share command.

When software installation is complete, the setup program will prompt with an offer to create a new program group and icon. You

may direct the setup program to create the group and icon or you can specify the program group and icon to use. “FlowScanner Applications” is the default choice.

When installation is complete, proceed with the steps in the next two sections.

A.3

Starting the Program for the First Time

Note The program serial number is required to activate the program as part of registration.

Double-click on the FlowStor icon in the FlowScanner Applications group to start the software. When you start FlowStor software for the first time after installation, the software creates the subdirectories and databases it needs before you can continue. The creation process takes several seconds. Then, a registration form appears on the screen. You can print a copy of this form and fax it to us or complete the form at the end this manual and fax it to us.

The FlowStor system administrator or primary user should provide the required information. This information is collected for use by Fisher Controls technical personnel to identify any test data sent to the BBS system using the FlowStor “Send to BBS” command.

Complete registration information is required for access to the secure BBS. After you have accessed the BBS, your registration information supports an automated transfer system that offers more rapid resolution of your valve performance and analysis questions.

Note FlowStor software will not run after installation unless all registration data is completed.

System Administrator Login After completing the registration form, exit and restart FlowStor software. When the first window appears, select Log In Manager from the File pull-down menu at the top of the window. Use the user name MANAGER and the password FALCON to enter the software security function. When the software ships, this is the only user name and password that allows access to the security function.

In the FlowStor User Access Controls window, the system administrator or primary user should first add his or her user name and password to the List of Users. Click the User Access Controls tab and enter your user name and password in the appropriate fields. Proper computer security procedures dictate that the person using the user name and password provided with the software should enter a new user name and password and remove the provided name and password from the List of Users.

When adding a user, the system administrator can also select which software functions are allowed for the user. To disable the user name and password requirement, select the Allow Changes button and then click the Activate Login, Access Controls check box to deselect this feature. When this is feature is disabled, any personal computer user will have full access to all features of the software without entering a user name and password.

Save changes and exit the software again. Now, to start the software, simply double-click the icon and when the software starts, go directly to a function window by clicking either the Copy or Add Data button or the Find/View Data button.

Link to RatRace Desktop Analysis Software FlowStor software has a built in link to RatRace software to help in interpreting diagnostic results. Since RatRace is a single user program, each user must link to their own copy of RatRace. The program will automatically search the local drives of the personal computer and create the link, once the RatRace software has been located. Since RatRace is a single user program, each user must have RatRace on their personal computer and link to their own copy to use this functionality.

Click the Copy or Add Data button. Then click on the Configure selection from the menu and chose Link to FlowAux/RatRace

FISHER DIAGNOSTICS SOFTWARE AND DOCUMENTATION LICENSE AGREEMENT Fisher Service Company (Fisher) provides this computer program and related documentation (Instruction manuals) for your use. For this program you assume the responsibility for the acquisition of a machine and associated equipment compatible with the program, and for your installation, use, and results obtained from the program.

LICENSE Fisher grants you a non–transferable, non–exclusive license to: a. use the program on a single machine, at a single site, b. use the programs already loaded on the FlowScanner, if applicable, c. copy the program for backup or modification purposes in support of your use of the program on a single machine d. modify the program and/or merge it into another program for your use on the single machine (Any portion of the program merged into another program will continue to be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement), e. the programs may not be decompiled or reverse assembled You must reproduce and include the copyright notice on any copy, modification, or portion merged into another program. Licensee may move the programs and/or documentation to another site upon prior written approval from Fisher.

CONFIDENTIALITY During the time that this License Agreement is in effect, and for a period of ten (10) years thereafter, Licensee shall maintain the Programs, the Documentation, and all information disclosed therein in confidence and shall not disclose the same to others without the prior written consent of Fisher. This obligation shall not apply, however, to any information which Licensee can show by competent evidence (a) was already known to Licensee prior to receipt thereof directly or indirectly from Fisher, (b) is publicly known as the date of this License Agreement or hereafter becomes publicly known through no fault of Licensee, but not until after such public knowledge occurs, or (c) is received by Licensee free of any restrictions on disclosure or use from a source other than, directly or indirectly, Fisher Licensee shall make the Programs, the Documentation and the information contained therein available to only those of Licensee’s officers and employees who have a need to know for performance of their assigned duties and who are bound to maintain the same confidentiality in accordance with the above paragraph IF YOU TRANSFER POSSESSION OF ANY COPY, MODIFICATION, OR MERGED PORTION OF THE PROGRAM OR RELATED MATERIALS TO ANOTHER PARTY, YOUR LICENSE IS AUTOMATICALLY TERMINATED. TERM This license is effective upon installing the software. You may terminate at any time by destroying the program and other related materials together with all copies, modifications, and merged portions in any form. It will also terminate upon conditions set forth elsewhere in this Agreement or if you fail to comply with any term or condition of this Agreement. You agree upon such termination to destroy the program and the related materials together with all related copies, modification, and merged portions in any form.

LIMITED WARRANTY THIS PROGRAM AND ALL RELATED MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED ”AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NO LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. WITH YOU. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION. Fisher does not warrant that the functions contained in the program will meet your requirements or that the operation of the program will be uninterrupted or error free. However, Fisher warrants the diskette(s) on which the program is furnished to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of delivery to you as evidenced by a copy of your invoice.

Fisher may, from time to time revise or update the program and/or materials and, in so doing, incurs no obligation to furnish such revisions or updates to you, except as set forth in the original commercial proposal and only then if the licensee has properly filled out and returned the registration card enclosed with the program.

TITLE Title to and ownership of the programs and related materials shall remain at all times with Fisher. Your right to use the same is at all times subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

LIMITATIONS OF REMEDIES Fisher’s entire liability and your exclusive remedy shall be: 1. the replacement of any diskette not meeting Fisher’s ”Limited Warranty” and which is returned with a copy of your invoice to the address shown below 2. if Fisher is unable to deliver a replacement diskette which is free of defects in materials or workmanship, you may terminate this Agreement by returning the program and your money will be refunded, if applicable.

IN NO EVENT SHALL FISHER BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY CAUSES WHATSOEVER (WHETHER SUCH CAUSES BE BASED IN CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE, STRICT LIABILITY, OTHER TORT OR OTHERWISE), INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS, LOST SAVINGS, OR OTHER INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE SUCH PROGRAM EVEN IF FISHER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR OF ANY CLAIM BY ANY OTHER PARTY.
