1. These materials are not listed in ASME B16.34. 2. The designations 150 and 300 are used only to indicate relative pressure-retaining capabilities and are not ANSI pressure-temperature rating class designations.
CAUTION
When ordered, the valve configuration and construction materials were selected to meet particular pressure, temperature, pressure drop, and controlled fluid conditions. Since some body/trim material combinations are limited in their pressure drop and temperature ranges, do not apply any other conditions to the valve without first contacting your Fisher sales office. 1. Before installing the valve, inspect it to be certain that the valve body cavity is free of foreign material. Clean out all pipelines to remove scale, welding slag, and other foreign materials. 2. The control valve assembly may be installed in any orientation unless limited by seismic criteria. However, the normal method is with the actuator vertical above the valve. With some valves, the actuator may also need to be supported when it is not vertical. For more information, consult your Fisher sales office. Flow through the valve must be in the direction indicated by the arrow on the valve body.
3. Use accepted piping practices when installing the valve in the pipeline. Use a suitable gasket between the valve and pipeline flanges. 4. With a leak-off bonnet construction, remove the pipe plug to hook up the leak-off piping. 5. If continuous operation is required during inspection or maintenance, install a three-valve bypass around the control valve assembly. 6. If the actuator and valve are shipped separately, refer to the appropriate actuator instruction manual for the actuator mounting procedure.
WARNING Personal injury could result from packing leakage. Valve packing was tightened before shipment; however, the packing might require some readjustment to meet specific service conditions. Valves with ENVIRO-SEALR packing will not require this initial re-adjustment. See your Fisher instruction manual titled ENVIRO-SEAL Packing System for Sliding-Stem Valves for packing instructions. If you wish to convert your present packing arrangement to ENVIRO-SEAL packing, refer to the retrofit kits listed in the parts kit sub-section near the end of this manual.

Design CP Note
Maintenance WARNING Avoid personal injury or property damage from sudden release of process pressure or bursting of parts. Before performing any maintenance operations: D Always wear protective gloves, clothing, and eyewear when performing any maintenance operations to avoid personal injury. D Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure, electric power, or a control signal to the actuator. Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve. D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure from both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve. D Vent the power actuator loading pressure and relieve any actuator spring precompression. D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. D The valve packing box may contain process fluids that are pressurized, even when the valve has been removed from the pipeline. Process fluids may spray out under pressure when removing the packing hardware or packing rings, or when loosening the packing box pipe plug. Due to the care Fisher takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements (heat treating, dimensional tolerances, etc.), use only replacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher. Valve parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced as necessary. Inspection and maintenance frequency depends on the severity of service conditions. This section includes instructions for packing maintenance, trim maintenance, and lapping seating surfaces. All these maintenance operations may be performed with the valve in the line.
4
Whenever a gasket seal is disturbed by removing or shifting gasketed parts, a new gasket should be installed upon reassembly. This is necessary to ensure a good gasket seal, since the used gasket will not seal properly.
Packing Maintenance Note If the valve has ENVIRO-SEAL packing installed, refer to instruction manual titled ENVIRO-SEAL Packing System for Sliding-Stem Valves, Form 5306, for packing instructions. Figure 2 in this manual shows typical ENVIRO-SEAL packing systems. Key numbers refer to figures 4 and 6. For all packing, except ENVIRO-SEAL packing systems, establish a stem seal to limit undesirable packing leakage. Establish the stem seal by tightening the packing flange nuts (key 212) to at least the minimum recommended torque in table 3. However, do not exceed the maximum recommended torque in table 3 or excessive friction may result. If the packing (key 215) is relatively new and tight on the stem, and tightening the packing flange nuts does not stop the leakage, the valve stem may be worn or nicked so that a seal cannot be made. The surface finish of a new valve stem is 0.1Âľm (4 micro-inches) rms. If the leakage comes from the outside diameter of the packing, the leakage may be caused by nicks or scratches in the packing box wall. While replacing the packing per the numbered steps below, or when performing any of the following procedures, inspect the valve stem and packing box wall for nicks and scratches.
Replacing Packing
WARNING To avoid personal injury or property damage caused by sudden release of pressure from the valve body or bonnet assembly, remove the valve plug stem assembly (key 7) by performing the steps below. Remove the packing flange (key 201) or the packing flange hex nuts (key 212) only as described in the following procedures.

Do not remove a stuck bonnet by pulling on it with equipment that can stretch or store energy in any other manner. The sudden release of stored energy can cause uncontrolled movement of the bonnet. 1. Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, release pressure from both sides of the valve body, and drain the process media from both sides of the valve. Disconnect any leak-off piping from the bonnet. If using a power actuator, also shut off all pressure lines to the power actuator, release all pressure from the actuator. Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. 2. Disconnect the stem connector, and then remove the actuator from the valve by unscrewing the yoke locknut (key 18).

STANDARD PACKING GRAPHITE RIBBON/FILAMENT WITH ONE-PIECE BUSHING
Note The following step provides additional assurance that the valve body fluid pressure has been relieved. 4. Hex nuts (key 11) attach the bonnet to the valve. Loosen these nuts approximately 3 mm (1/8 inch). Then loosen the body-to-bonnet gasketed joint by either rocking the bonnet or prying between the bonnet
Design CP and valve. Work the prying tool around the bonnet until the bonnet loosens. If no fluid leaks from the joint, remove the nuts completely and carefully lift the bonnet and valve plug stem assembly (keys 12 and 7) as a unit. If the valve plug stem assembly does not come out of the valve with the bonnet, pull it out of the valve body. Set the bonnet and valve plug assembly on a protective surface, to prevent damage to the bonnet gasket surface. 5. Remove the valve plug and stem from the bonnet, and carefully set it on a protective surface. 6. Remove the bonnet gasket (key 9), and cover the opening in the valve body to protect the gasket surface and prevent foreign material from getting into the valve body cavity. 7. Remove the packing flange nuts, packing flange, and bushing (keys 212, 201, and 208). The packing box bushings may be one-piece or three-piece bushings. Carefully push out all the remaining packing box parts from the bonnet using a rounded rod or other tool that will not scratch the packing box wall or lower guide bushing. Clean the packing box and the metal packing box parts. 8. Inspect the valve stem threads and packing box surfaces for any sharp edges that might cut the packing. Scratches or burrs could cause packing box leakage or damage to the new packing. If the surface condition cannot be improved by light sanding, replace the damaged parts. 9. Remove the covering protecting the valve body cavity, make sure the gasket seating surfaces are clean, then install a new bonnet gasket (key 9). Note The bolting procedures in step 10 include—but are not limited to—ensuring that bolting threads are clean, and the hex nuts are evenly tightened onto the studs in a crisscross pattern. Tightening one nut may loosen an adjacent nut. Repeat the crisscross tightening pattern several times until each nut is tight and the body-to-bonnet seal is made. When the operating temperature has been reached, perform the torquing procedure once again. 10. Lubricate the stud bolts, nuts, and the surface between nuts and bonnet with a suitable lubricant. Carefully slide the valve plug into the bonnet, slide the bonnet onto the bolts, and secure with the stud bolt nuts (key 11). Using accepted bolting procedures, tighten the body-to-bonnet joint to withstand test pressures and application service conditions. Use the bolt torques in
table 4 as guidelines unless accepted bolting procedures dictate otherwise. 11. Install new packing and the metal packing box parts according to the appropriate arrangement in figures 2, 4, or 6. Place a smooth-edged pipe over the valve stem, and gently tap each soft packing part into the packing box, being sure that air is not trapped between adjacent soft parts. 12. Slide the bushing and packing flange (keys 208 and 201) into position. Lubricate the packing flange studs (key 200) and the faces of the packing flange nuts (key 212). Replace the packing flange nuts, but do not tighten. 13. Tighten the packing flange nuts as described for the appropriate packing: a. For graphite packing, tighten the packing flange nuts to the maximum recommended torque shown in table 3. Then, loosen the packing flange nuts, and retighten them to the recommended minimum torque shown in table 3. b. For PTFE packing, tighten the packing flange nuts alternately in small equal increments until one of the nuts reaches the minimum recommended torque shown in table 3. Then, tighten the remaining flange nuts until the packing flange is level and at a 90-degree angle to the valve stem. c. For ENVIRO-SEAL packing, refer to instruction manual titled ENVIRO-SEAL Packing System for Sliding-Stem Valves, Form 5306, for packing instructions. 14. Mount the actuator onto the valve assembly, and reconnect the actuator and valve stem according to the procedure in the appropriate actuator instruction manual. Check for leakage around the packing follower when the valve is being put into service. Retighten the packing flange nuts as required.
Trim Maintenance Key numbers in this section refer to figure 6.
Removal 1. Remove the actuator and the bonnet as described in steps 1 through 4 of the Replacing Packing section. 2. Packing parts can be removed if desired. Replace these parts as described in the Packing Maintenance section. 3. Lift out the seat ring retainer (key 3), seat ring (key 2), and seat ring gasket (key 8) or the disk retainer, disk and disk seat (keys 4, 5, and 6) if used. 4. Inspect parts for wear or damage that would prevent proper operation of the valve. The valve plug
7
Design CP and stem assembly are marked to show valve size, flow characteristic, material identification, flow coefficient, and part number. The other trim parts are marked to show valve size, material identification, and part number. Figure 5 shows an example of trim marking. 5. Replace or repair trim parts according to the following Lapping Metal Seats (for eroded valve seats) or Assembly procedures as appropriate.
Lapping Metal Seats A certain amount of leakage should be expected with metal-to-metal seating in any valve body. If the leakage becomes excessive, however, the condition of the seating surfaces of the valve plug and seat ring (keys 7 and 2) can be improved by lapping. Deep nicks should be machined out rather than lapped out. Using a 400 grit commercial lapping compound, apply the compound to the valve plug and seat ring seating surfaces. The valve must be assembled to the extent that the seat ring retainer is in place, the seat ring centered, and the bonnet (with guide bushings installed) bolted to the valve. A simple handle can be made from a piece of strap iron locked to the valve plug stem with nuts. Rotate the handle alternately in each direction with light downward pressure to lap the seats. If there is any indication of insufficient lubrication (e.g., squeaking, vibration, etc.), stop the procedure, and apply more lapping compound before continuing. After lapping, remove the bonnet, and clean the seating surfaces. Completely assemble as described in the assembly portion of this section, and test the valve for shutoff. Repeat the lapping procedure if leakage is still excessive.
8
Assembly 1. Clean all gasketed surfaces, and use new gaskets for assembly. Note When installing either the seat ring (key 2) or the disk seat (key 6), make sure the part is positioned so the serrations are down. 2. Install the seat ring gasket (key 8) and the seat ring [with the serrations down] (key 2) or the disk retainer, disk and disk seat [with the serrations down] (keys 4, 5 and 6) if used. 3. Place the seat ring retainer (key 3) in the valve body and lower it, making sure that the retainer guides onto the seat ring. Any rotational orientation of the seat ring retainer with respect to the valve body is acceptable.
CAUTION If the packing is to be reused and was not removed from the bonnet, install the valve plug carefully to avoid damaging the packing with the valve stem threads. 4. Install the bonnet gasket, mount the bonnet on the valve, and complete the assembly according to steps 9 through 14 of the Replacing Packing section, omitting steps 11 and 12 if new packing is not being installed. Be sure to observe the note prior to step 10.
