We’ll fill you in on the news you’ve missed and help you make the most of your time here. But we also want to let you know how much we appreciate you helping us give back to the cities and the state that we hold so dear.

Our Season for Sharing campaign raised $2.4 million during the holidays last year.

In March, we gave every penny of that away to 159 non-profits that help children and families, aid older adults, boost education and fight domestic violence. The bulk of those donations came from our subscribers.

In conjunction with Arizona State University, we named the first recipient of our Don Bolles fellowship for investigative reporting. Bolles was the Republic reporter who was assassinated 41 years ago while he was reporting on mafia ties in the Valley.

Also at ASU, we held the first media innovation summer camp, where 22 high schoolers imagined the news world of 2030 and beyond. Both efforts are funded by subscribers who donate to our Media in Education fund.

We gave away $450,000 to agencies that work to prevent child abuse and neglect.

The money was generated mostly by sales of the “It Shouldn’t Hurt to be a Child” specialty license plate. The Republic helped create the program, which has generated more than $9 million in grants to non-profits since 1999.

We have a responsibility to inform our community. We also have a responsibility to strengthen our community by giving back to the groups that make Arizona a better place to live.

ARIZONA HAPPENINGS you may have missed while

you were gone.

1. Heat. You missed this on purpose, but you may have heard about it back home. Phoenix had three consecutive days of record high temperatures June 19-21: 118, 119, 116 degrees. On July 7, it reached 118 again, breaking a 112-year-old record high. By July 8, the temperatures had reached 110-degrees-plus for the 18th time this year — the average number of 110 degree days we have in any year.

2. School money. A year after Arizona voters passed Proposition 123 as a much-needed first step toward increasing public education funding in the state, the Legislature became embroiled in a controversy over private school vouchers as it voted to expand the system. Critics charged that vouchers rob public schools of money.

3. Minimum wage blues. The state Legislature also worked to tighten rules on Arizona’s voter initiative system after the Arizona Chamber of Commerce expressed consternation about the passage of Proposition 206 in November 2016.

That increased the minimum wage to $10 an hour with another raise to $12 by 2020. Critics charged the laws the Legislature passed were aimed to make it nearly impossible for voters to get an initiative on the ballot in the future.

4. Jeff Flake’s re-election realities. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake finds himself facing challenges from the right and the left as he heads into a re-election campaign in 2018. Flake, a Republican, has been criticized on the right for not toeing President Trump’s line closely enough while the left blasted him for votes on Trump nominees and handling of constituents at town halls and protesting in his

Annual Festival of Lights office. Both sides carefully watched for his stance on Senate Republicans’ health care bill, which he supported.

5. Joe faces jail. Meanwhile, an ousted Republican had a different set of troubles. Longtime Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who lost his re-election bid in November, was hoping to stay out of jail himself after being found guilty of criminal contempt of court for ignoring U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow’s order to stop enforcing federal immigration law.

6. Legacy undone. Perhaps Arpaio’s biggest icon, his “Tent City� jail, was dismantled by Arpaio’s successor. Sheriff Paul Penzone ordered Maricopa County’s open-air jail, notorious for hosting inmates wearing pink underwear in the blistering summer heat, to be shut down. The jail was taken down from April through July.

7. Utility regulator indicted. Former utility regulator Gary Pierce in May was indicted in federal court of bribery, conspiracy and fraud. The indictment said Pierce approved higher rates for Johnson Utilities in the East Valley and Pinal County in exchange for $31,000, which company owner George Johnson funneled to his wife, Sherry Pierce, through lobbyist Jim Norton. A trial date is tentatively set for the fall.

The charges were a surprise because the FBI said in 2016 it was investigating Pierce and electric utility Arizona Public Service Co., with no mention of Johnson Utilities.

8. Maryvale Shooter suspect caught. In May, the Phoenix Police Department named 23-year-old Aaron Saucedo as a suspect in a series of shootings that terrorized the west Phoenix neighborhood of Maryvale. Saucedo is facing 26 charges related to the serial shootings, which killed nine people, eight of them last year. The murders were random and usually at night.

9. Fire causes evacuations. The Goodwin Fire, south of Prescott, burned more than 28,000 acres in late June and early July and caused the towns of Mayer and DeweyHumboldt to be evacuated. Drones twice grounded fire operations from the air.

10. Local legend dies. Frank Kush, who put Arizona State football on the map by winning 176 games from 1958-79, died June 22 at age 88 in Tempe. The public reacted with an outpouring of affection for the College Hall of Fame coach known for his tough style but who was ousted after allegations of program improprieties surfaced.

11. Diamondbacks resurgence. Entering 2016, with the acquisition of starting pitchers Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller, the Diamondbacks were supposed to contend for a playoff spot in baseball’s National League West Division but faltered badly from the start. With few personnel changes for 2017, little was expected, but this time, the Diamondbacks came roaring from the gate and had baseball’s third best record at the All-Star break.

What are the darkest places in Arizona?

BEFORE A ROAD TRIP WITH MY SON last summer, I had never experienced a truly dark sky.

Like really dark. Phoenix at 3 a.m. times 20 dark. So dark you’ll never find the rental car until the morning, but at least we’re surrounded by literally billions of stars. I’m talking E.T. phone home dark.

Sonny and I geeked out on planets and constellations last June with a few dozen other space nuts at wildly remote Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Visible to the naked eye were five of the eight planets in our solar system, scores of man-made satellites, the unmistakable swirl of the Andromeda Galaxy and the cloudy ribbon of the Milky Way that contains our own galaxy — all because it was pitch-black.

We think seeing a few shooting stars and the Big Dipper are a big deal in Phoenix. But because of light pollution, we’re shortchanging our celestial experience. There’s a lot more out there.

In Arizona So where do we go in Arizona to really see stars? Are there “dark skies” near us?

“Arizona has been a preferred location for astronomers, professional and amateurs, since the early 1900s,” said Mike Weasner of the Oracle Dark Skies Committee, which worked to receive dark-sky status in 2014 for Oracle State Park by the International Dark-Sky Association. “(This is) due to generally good weather and the mountains to get above the thicker portion of the atmosphere.”

Oracle State Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Wupatki National Monument and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument are four IDA-designated “dark sky” parks in the state, meaning the sites actively practice responsible lighting policies and public education.

include Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek and Flagstaff, the world’s first IDA dark-sky city and home of the world-renowned research facility at the Lowell Observatory.

Also suited for stargazing But there also are other non-IDA sites well suited to stargazing. Kitt Peak National Observatory southwest of Tucson operates 24 optical and two radio telescopes, making it one of the most important sites for astronomy in our state. The place feels like X-Files meets ASU. Behind the tours and school groups, there’s some serious

science going on.

Same with Mount Graham International Observatory near Safford, which is an astrophysical research facility managed by the University of Arizona and home of the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.

Protecting dark skies The protection of truly dark night skies “is not only important to astronomers, both professional and amateur,” Weasner said, “it is also important to protecting human health, wildlife, environment, reducing wasted energy costs, climate and cultural heritages.

“And, while this is surprising to some, protecting the night sky also enhances our safety and security.”

So we can watch the watchers.

Think I’ll just keep an eye toward the stars.

driving force behind the chapel, completed in 1957. It perches 200 feet above the valley floor, thrusting upward between two burly pillars of rock. High cliffs of salmon hues form the backdrop.

The interior is simple and unadorned. A few benches, some tapestries and flickering candles create a serene, meditative oasis, while soft sunlight streams through the floor-to-ceiling window. Come for the sweeping views, a little quiet contemplation or both. Free.

Architect Paolo Soleri wanted to create a new type of urban habitat, one that is compact, efficient and sensitive to the environment.

Tumacácori National Historical Park This park in southern Arizona protects the ruins of a Spanish mission community on the banks of the Santa Cruz River. In the late 17th century, Spanish missionaries traveled from Mexico up the Santa Cruz seeking to convert native people. Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded the mission at Tumacácori in 1691. Nearby Tubac was established as a Spanish presidio (fort) in 1752, making it the first European settlement in what would become Arizona.

The signature structure is the Tumacácori mission church, which was never completed.

Yet it is a profoundly moving experience to enter the sunlit sanctuary and stand in this quiet place. Behind the church are the mortuary chapel and cemetery. The visitor center contains a museum that puts a staggering amount of history in perspective.

While there, be sure to visit the charming artist haven of Tubac where 80-plus shops are clustered in the village plaza. Old adobes, Spanish courtyards and ocotillo fences blend seamlessly with a handful of newer buildings.

There’s a whiff of emergent Santa Fe here without the jostling crowds.

Arcosanti This looks like a Dr. Seuss construction site, consisting of structures both striking and fanciful. Clustered modular residences, large circular windows and curving rooflines rise above a dry riverbed.

Architect Paolo Soleri, a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright, broke ground on Arcosanti in 1970. He coined the term “arcology” to describe the concept of architecture shaped by ecology to create 14

a new type of urban habitat, one that is compact, efficient and sensitive to the environment. Today Arcosanti serves primarily as a learning institution.

Tours are offered daily. They provide a look at the history, design and functionality of the project and you’re likely to see the famous Soleri wind bells being cast in the foundry. The café serves simple healthy meals and homemade baked goods.

Walk off some calories with a hike and then pack them on again with some tasty pie.

If that’s not a holiday tradition for your family, it should be.

The Black Canyon National Recreation Trail stretches 80 miles from Carefree Highway on the outskirts of Phoenix north past Mayer, skirting the base of the Bradshaw Mountains and crisscrossing the Agua Fria River. It is an engineering marvel and scenic gem for hikers, bikers and equestrians.

Don’t worry. You won’t have to hike the whole 80 miles to earn your pie. Tackle whatever is comfortable. From the parking area at the Black Canyon City Trailhead, the well-constructed path winds through open desert, reaching a split at 0.7 mile. Bear left for the Horseshoe Bend segment or right for the K-Mine segment. Both are moderate trails that descend quickly to the Agua Fria River and beyond. Go as far as you like.

Bonus: Once you’re back at the trailhead, you’re just a stone’s throw from Rock Springs Café. The former stage stop dishes up a full menu but probably is most famous for its pies, most notably the Jack Daniels pecan.

Don’t fight temptation. You’re enjoying a beautiful day in the Arizona desert. Indulge a little.

There are daily tours to Grand Canyon ($155), entering the national park at Desert View on the eastern edge. From there they follow the East Rim Drive, stopping at multiple overlooks all the way into Grand Canyon Village. Another tour visits Sedona, Jerome and Montezuma Castle ($120).

Vaughan’s Southwest Tours also rambles south from the Valley. If you’ve got a hankering to turn back the pages of history they’ll customize a tour to Tombstone where you can explore one of the old silver mines and stop by Boothill Cemetery where so many notorious figures sleep in cold graves. Also included is a visit to the elegant Mission San Xavier del Bac, the “White Dove of the Desert” just south of Tucson.

Arizona Scenic Tours If you’re looking for an intimate personalized jaunt, that’s a specialty of Arizona Scenic Tours. They focus on tours of two to five people, although they can accommodate more by bringing a second van. And they’ll go to just about any corner of Arizona that interests you.

Arizona Outback Adventures

Take a day trip to Payson, Prescott, Wickenburg or Tucson. Or go further afield and explore Tombstone and Bisbee. Get your kicks on Route 66 or spend the night in Monument Valley. Wine buffs have a couple of options — a swing through the wineries around Sonoita and Elgin or those tucked away in the lush Verde Valley. Wine tours start at $145.

Of course, day trips to Grand Canyon ($175) and Sedona ($155) remain the most popular outings. But with such small groups, there’s plenty of flexibility in the itineraries.

“We don’t have set routes,” owner Steve Gerhart says. “So if people want to change things around, we can do that. Maybe they want to start for the Grand Canyon a little later so they can be there for sunset. Or they tweak some of the stops so we can add a visit to Cameron Trading Post or Williams. That’s the advantage of catering to small groups.”

Multi-day outings are available and tours can be combined with activities

This 20-year-old company places an emphasis on adventures. They’ll get you to the otherworldly turquoise waters of Havasu Falls or take you backpacking into the Superstition Mountains or hiking rimto-rim at Grand Canyon — which as anyone who has made the trek knows, can be a logistical nightmare. The guided three-day rim-to-rim hike leaves from Scottsdale with all problems handled. It includes transportation, lodging and meals and costs $1,595 per person.

They’re also known for their numerous cycling jaunts, both road bike and mountain biking. You can spend a few hours riding on Valley roads or desert trails.

Or spend four days on an Old West bike trip through southern Arizona. You’ll travel the saguaro-lined roadways of Tucson, through the rolling grasslands of Sonoita and into the high desert of Tombstone. You can get your classical music fix at the Phoenix Symphony, with shows this season for every taste, from the timeless “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin to the not-so-traditional shows honoring the music of Harry Potter. There’s so much to see and do in Phoenix, thanks to an abundance of unique attractions from world-class museums and performing arts to family-friendly nature parks. Soak up some culture with a visit to one of these Valley venues and arts organizations.

Frank Lloyd Wright, the visionary architect, made his winter home at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, which offers a variety of tours.

Wright’s trademark was creating buildings that reflected the natural environment, an idea that the late Paolo Soleri took one step further with his eco-friendly “arcology.” You can explore his experimental buildings at Cosanti in Paradise Valley.

Get closer to nature at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior or, right in the heart of the Valley, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. That’s next door to the Phoenix Zoo, where you can get up close and personal with the animals at Stingray Bay and inside Monkey Village. Animal attractions also include Butterfly Wonderland, an indoor rainforest environment in Scottsdale where your shoulder might become a perch for one of the colorful insects, and OdySea Aquarium, which is the Southwest’s largest aquarium. Over on the west side, the Wildlife 20

World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park boasts more than 600 species of exotic and endangered animals, mainly from Africa and South America.

Educational opportunities for the next generation include Phoenix’s Arizona Science Center, with an IMAX theater, planetarium and exhibits such as “All About Me,” where kids can walk inside a giant human stomach, and “Forces of Nature,” which takes them inside a tornado and a volcanic eruption. More hands-on experiences with art and science can be found at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix and the i.d.e.a. Museum in Mesa.

The Valley’s flagship museum is the Phoenix Art Museum, with extensive collections of European, Asian and Western American art, as well as one of the finest fashion-design collections in the country.

The Heard Museum, specializing in Native American art and history, is one of Phoenix’s top tourist attractions, as is the Musical Instrument Museum, with more than 16,000 instruments from every corner of the globe.

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is a Smithsonian affiliate that features regularly changing exhibits of Western art and artifacts, events and programs.

Earlier this year, state and Tohono O’odham officials reached a settlement that should end long-running court battles. The deal allows the tribe to expand Desert Diamond casino into a full casino, including table games such as poker and blackjack that aren’t currently offered there.

The tribe expects to begin construction on a larger casino and resort with restaurants, bars and other amenities by year’s end. The casino will grow to 75,000 square-feet. While more than double its current size, it will not be the Valley’s largest casino. Talking Stick in Scottsdale is the grand-daddy, and Fort McDowell has the second largest casino floor.

And by “few,” we mean multitudes, ranging from Chris Bianco’s outstanding Tratto, to Scott Conant’s boisterous and usually pretty darn good Mora, to Matt Carter’s somewhat uneven Fat Ox, plus loads more.

But Sichuan has also gotten a recent bump with the arrival of the excellent California import, Original Cuisine, and newcomer Spice Spirit.

It’s a bull market for contemporary tacos, from the refined creations at Crujiente Tacos

to the casual fare at Tacos Tequila Whiskey to the thumping scene at Casa Añejo, though the best of the bunch may be the return of Doug Robson’s Gallo Blanco.

And though Kevin Binkley’s eponymous restaurant has established itself as a uniquely comfortable and welcoming way to enjoy highend cuisine, fine-dining restaurants, including the venerable Posh, continue to vanish from the local scene, leaving a trail of local midrange chains in their wake. Openings continue at a breakneck pace, but signs are ominous, and the bubble may be on the verge of popping.

His new incarnation of Binkley’s opened in the former Bink’s Midtown space in Phoenix. to begin with the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which will be played Jan. 29-Feb. 4 at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale.

The Phoenix Open is the largest and loudest party on the PGA Tour, with week-long attendance in the 2017 event topping 600,000 for the week and 200,000 for Saturday’s third round.

It won’t be quite as raucous at the Charles Schwab Cup, the final event of the Champions

Tour, but the move to Phoenix Country Club for the November tournament should boost interest and ticket sales because of its central location.

Of course, those who like to play the game instead of watch will be able tee it up on one of the seemingly endless quality courses in the Valley, whether it’s far south at the AkChin Southern Dunes in Maricopa or up north at nationally renowned layouts like Troon North or We-Ko-Pa.

IT’S BEEN A LONG DRY SPELL for the Valley’s four

professional sports teams, but that could change in the coming months.

The Arizona Cardinals are coming off a disappointing 7-8-1 season, but quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald put off retirement for a year and the team by all accounts had a successful draft, taking two impact defenders in linebacker Haason Reddick and safety Budda Baker. Don’t be surprised if the Cardinals again challenge for the NFC West title.

The Phoenix Suns, meanwhile, have one of the NBA’s best young players in guard Devin Booker, two promising big men in Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss and took herald-

ed Kansas’ Josh Jackson with the fourth pick in the NBA draft. For the first time in a long time, things are looking up on Planet Orange.

Even the Diamondbacks, coming off a 69win season, are enjoying a resurgence. They were one of the surprise teams in the first half of the Major League baseball season, thanks in part to a return to form by pitcher Zack Greinke and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

Finally, it’s been a disappointing two seasons for the Arizona State football team but with five-star quarterback Blake Barnett transferring in from Alabama, there’s reason to think the Sun Devils could take a major step forward.

Retail stores thrive in Arizona malls AMAZON IS GROWING EVER BIGGER when it comes

to online shopping and some chain retailers with Arizona stores closed over the past year, including Sports Authority, Payless ShoeSource and Bebe.

Fiesta Mall in Mesa was sold to developers who this spring said they plan to turn the former powerhouse shopping center of the southeast Valley into a health and education campus, reported azcentral.com But that doesn’t mean the metro Phoenix shopping centers are suffering. Many of the Valley’s largest retail locations are running at capacity, according to azcentral.com.

Macerich, the largest operator of Arizona malls, announced a multiyear expansion of Scottsdale Fashion Square. Among the new stores are Abercrombie & Fitch, Montblanc, Champs, an expanded Sephora and remodeled White House Black Market.

chain drug stores such as Walgreens or CVS. These clinics offer options for people who can’t get a timely appointment with a primary care doctor and want quick care.

But winter visitors will notice that large hospital systems such as Banner Health, Dignity Health, HonorHealth and Abrazo are opening clinics at retail locations such as shopping centers and strip malls, too.

The hospitals tout retail clinics as convenient options for time-starved consumers.

These large health systems also want to make sure that healthy patients get routine care without crowding hospital emergency rooms, which are needed for the sickest patients.

“We’re expanding services and providing care where our customers live and work across the Valley,” said Nathan Anspach, CEO of HonorHealth Medical Group.

HonorHealth, which operates hospitals in Scottsdale and Phoenix, has opened four outpatient clinics across metro Phoenix and plans to open four more.

Dignity Health, which owns St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, has urgent-care clinics in Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Maricopa and Queen Creek.

Banner Health, the region’s largest health provider, is making the biggest splash in this area with last year’s purchased of the Urgent Care Extra’s 32 clinics in Arizona. Those clinics have been renamed Banner Urgent Care with plans for 50 Arizona locations by the end of the year.

WITH AGE COMES WISDOM, I’M SURE OF IT.

You know it’s true because this is the time of the year you’re packing to come to Arizona or you’re already on the road. Smart people.

I love Arizona but hate the summers here.

My family moved here when I was 14, which qualifies me as nearly a native. So while you really don’t ever get used to the triple-digit heat, even after 38 summers, you do eventually figure out how to live with it.

Against conventional wisdom that lightcolored clothing is cooler in summer, I dress mostly in black. That way, no one can tell if my back is soaked with sweat.

I tuck ice packs in my bra. (I’m cool like that.)

In the car, I drive with just two fingers on the sizzling steering wheel and my elbows cocked outward so that the air-conditioning can blast my arm pits.

(The next car I buy will be one with an air conditioning vent that blasts the driver in the crotch from beneath the steering column. I don’t care how much it costs, I will buy that car for this reason alone.)

You miss all that when you scootch out of here before the triple-digit temperatures set in.

In a story last month, my colleagues reported that Phoenix’s last 20 summers have averaged 38 more 100-degree days than the first 20 of the last century did. The city now endures 110 days over 100 degrees.

But I figure the heat is the penance we pay for the wonderful weather we enjoy the rest of the year.

For living under a perpetually blue sky, with geckos doing push-ups on the walls of my house and the smell of Hatch chiles roasting in the parking lot of Food City.

For outside barbecues on Christmas Day, sipping mimosas poolside and watching paperthin petals from the fuchsia bougainvillea float nearby.

For watching spring-training games from the grass in the outfield.

In your wisdom, you show up for the good part of the year. You come in October because you can swim until Halloween (even longer if the pool is heated), or in November to eat Thanksgiving dinner outside on the porch.

But you get out in April, May or June and for sure before the metal buckle on your car seat belt can sear through your skin.

I’m a little jealous.

But I’ve been watching your example for decades now, how your back and forth travels mean you don’t suffer any season but enjoy the weather all year long. I can’t do it, not yet.

But one day, I will. I won’t be a snowbird, fleeing the cold and snow. I’ll be a sunbird, fleeing the heat and the dust storms.

And then, like you, I’ll come back to Arizona, where I’ll eat breakfast on my back porch in the sunshine all winter long and go for hikes in the desert in my shorts in January.

But you already know that routine. Smart people.
