HOLES IN ONE AT THE PHOENIX OPEN AT TPC SCOTTSDALE There have been 24 aces in tournament play at the Phoenix Open held at the TPC Scottsdale. The first hole in one in the Phoenix Open at the TPC Scottsdale came in 1987 on the 12th hole. There were two a year ago. The most memorable hole in one came in 1997 when Tiger Woods aced the 16th hole.

College programs key to Arizona golf legacy elson and surround him with enough depth to get through the grueling NCAA Championships (four rounds of stroke play then match play for the top eight teams).

“Pretty much every kid dreams of being a golf superstar,” Thurmond said. “To see how many players we’ve had go on to do great things validates who we are at ASU. The more powerful part is when those successful past players engage in the program and continue to support it. That’s when it becomes very powerful. What everybody wants is the team to be really good. The former players are forever attached to ASU and want that to be something that brings a lot of pride. The better we do, the cooler it is to be an alum.”

Being a UA men’s golf alum gained in cool quotient this month when Jim Furyk was named 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain. Furyk, 46, still is playing at a high level – he tied for second at the U.S. Open and shot a round of 58 at the Travelers Championship last year – and could potentially be a player candidate for the 2018 Ryder Cup. In that case, someone else likely would serve as captain.

Furyk was on UA’s only NCAA championship team in 1992 and his four years in Tucson overlapped with Sorenstam, who won the 1991 NCAA women’s individual title a year after teammate Susan Slaughter. Sorenstam, with 10 LPGA major titles and 72 total is statistically the greatest college golfer to come out of the state of Arizona. The UA women won NCAA titles in 1996 and 2000.

But for team dominance, nothing compares to the ASU women, whose run under coach Linda Vollstedt in the 1990s is the best in any sport aside from archery (no longer varsity) in school history. When golf returned to the Olympics last year, five former Sun Devil women qualified, representing four countries.

Northern Arizona (women) and Grand Canyon (men/women) also compete in golf at the Division I level.

This year, the Phoenix Open field includes five golfers with in-state college ties headlined by three-time champion Mickelson, who always brings out the Sun Devil fans, and Rahm. Others entered are Chez Reavie (ASU), Pat Perez (ASU) and Ricky Barnes (UA).

“That tournament shows what kind of golf community we have,” Thurmond said. “All our players grow up knowing about the TPC Scottsdale,” Phoenix Open home since 1987. “That’s the first course they want to play.”

The Phoenix Open dates back to the 1930s and so does college golf in Arizona.

The Arizona State men’s golf history, in fact, goes back to 1931, a year before the first Phoenix Open. The growth of pro and college golf in the state are intertwined with the connection strengthened by the World Golf Hall of Fame credentials of Phil Mickelson (ASU), JoAnne Carner (ASU), Annika Sorenstam (Arizona) and Lorena Ochoa (UA), who will be inducted in September.

“When I was a junior golfer looking at college and imaging myself playing college golf, me and about every kid in the country saw Arizona State as the program,” said Matt Thurmond, now in his first year as ASU men’s golf coach. “I love what happened at ASU in those years, complete dominance. Frankly that’s how I’ve always seen ASU golf.”

That was the 1990s, a decade that included two men’s NCAA titles (1990, 1996), top 10 national finishes every year and seven Pac-10 titles.

And even greater success for the Sun Devil women with six NCAA championships in nine years from 1990-98.

Mickelson won three NCAA individual championships (1989, 1990, 1992) and no sooner had he left for the pros then Todd Demsey retained the crown for ASU in 1993.

Twenty-plus years later, ASU still is living off those heady days while, in a more competitive landscape, trying to fight back to the top, last reached by the women in 2009.

“The program is in a a very healthy place right now,” said Thurmond, who left a quality program at Washington to try rekindling the magic at ASU (he ended up playing collegiately at BYU). “I still think our best days are ahead of us. It can be accomplished again. That’s on my mind every day.”

ASU golf is transitioning from Karsten Golf Course on campus, part of the Athletic Facilities District redevelopment area, to nearby Papago Golf Course, under ASU management since 2014 when a 30-year agreement was signed with the city of Phoenix. The competitive ramifications are yet to be known, but ASU is planning to make an announcement in February related to a Papago practice facility.

The Sun Devils also are in their first season without Jon Rahm, the Ben Hogan (twice) and Jack Nicklaus national award winner during his ASU career. It’s on Thurmond now to find the next Rahm or Mick-

Stop-N-Drop: Have a friend or designated driver dropping you off? This is the designated area for that. It's at Hayden and Bell roads next to the Expo Village. The area is accessible via Hayden Road, with no access on Bell Road. ... Uber: The company is the official ride-share partner of the Phoenix Open and will have a pick-up and drop-off lot just north of the Birds Nest at Princess Drive and 82nd Street near Lot 7. There you'll find a new rider lounge situated in a 80-by-40-foot tent, featuring phone charging stations, complimentary bottled water and music. This year the app will be simplified, offering three types of vehicles and riders get into the appropriate line for the type of car requested. Riders will not be able to request an Uber until they arrive at the lounge. ... Lyft: The ride-share company will do pick-ups and drop-offs at the tournament. Parking: Free public parking is located at Lot H throughout the tournament, at Loop 101 and Hayden Road. Drivers are recommended to exit Hayden Road off the Loop 101, and go south to the lot. Free shuttles will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

There's also free parking at Westworld, Lot W, on Wednesday through Saturday. To get to this lot, exit Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, go north on Bell Road and then east on 94th Street. Free shuttles from this lot will run 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2017 16th hole is bigger - The infamously rowdy arena-style hole gets an upgrade this year with 500 new general admission bleacher seats, which are first-come, first-serve. They are highly coveted, so patrons are encouraged to arrive early. Ten more VIP sky boxes are also new, bringing the capacity to more than 16,000.

Bottled Blonde Pavilion - The popular spot in downtown Scottsdale will have a new venue on the 18th hole, and basically be a version of its sleek beer garden.

Annexus Pro-Am celebrities - Actor Mark Whalberg, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and receiver Larry Fitzgerald, ex-football and baseball player Bo Jackson, and ex-pro baseball players Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens.

Phil Mickelson No Mount Rushmore of golf would be complete without Mickelson, who might have been born in California but long has been claimed by Arizona as a native son.

Mickelson became ours in the early 1990s when he attended Arizona State and became the most dominant amateur golfer in the country, winning 16 tournaments, three NCAA individual titles and earning All-America honors four straight years.

If that wasn’t enough, Mickelson became only the sixth amateur to win a PGA Tour event and he did so in Tucson, winning the 1991 Northern Telecom Open. The number of amateurs who have won a Tour event since then: zero.

Solheim didn’t take up golf until he was 42 and only then because he was invited to play in a foursome by some colleagues at General Electric.

From that invitation came one of the sport’s great innovators.

Like many golfers, Solheim’s putting woes kept him up at night. So he did something about it, designing a putter with the shaft at the center of the blade. Soon after, he was designing clubs in the garage of his Phoenix home. In 1967, 13 years after he first picked up a club, Solheim started Karsten Manufacturing, better known today as PING. The name, by the way, came from the sound he heard as the metal of the club struck the golf ball.

It’s almost impossible to overstate what Solheim meant to golf. His principle of perimeter weighting soon became the standard in club design. The list of players who have used PING clubs is too long to mention, but perhaps it’s worth noting that an amateur named Tiger Woods once used the Ping Anser 2 steel putter.

Solheim’s legacy continues to be celebrated, whether it’s the Solheim Cup, the women’s version of the Ryder Cup, or the ASU Karsten Golf Course.

When Solheim died in 2000 at the age of 88, Ken Lindsay, former president of the PGA of America, said: “Perhaps no individual has had as profound as impact on the golf industry as Karsten Solheim.”

is a year-round pursuit here, free of snow and sleet and freezing temperatures? Sure, it gets hot in the summer but that’s when the prices are low and the courses aren’t crowded. It’s a trade-off many of us happily accept. • Basically, Arizona golf rocks.

Which got us thinking: Who would be on the Mount Rushmore of golf in Arizona?

There were a long list of candidates but in the end, these four names stood out.

Bob Goldwater Sr.

Annika Sorenstam

Goldwater has been called the “Father of the Phoenix Open” and for good reason: It was his persistence and forward thinking that gave birth to the event.

When Sorenstam was playing collegiately at e University of Arizona in the early 1990s, few the ought she would one day become the most thought dominant player on the LPGA Tour.

When Goldwater became a Thunderbird in 1939 he suggested to Big Chief Ken Barton that the group resurrect the then-defunct Phoenix Open.

The Thunderbirds weren’t interested in hosting a sporting event but they agreed to appoint a committee that would meet with the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce in order to discuss other events they might promote.

Sorenstam won the NCAA Division I individual title in 1991 as a freshman but the victory didn’t stamp her Swedish passport with greatness. In fact, when she turned pro in 1992 she failed to earn her LPGA Tour card, missing out by one shot at the final qualifying tournament.

Goldwater was the only Thunderbird to show up at the meeting so, with no one to argue against him, he pushed the idea of a golf tournament and got approval from the Chamber of Commerce.

There was just one problem. The Thunderbirds wanted no part of a golf tournament so they made Goldwater do all the work. He sold the sponsorships, printed the tickets and made a deal with Phoenix Country Club to host the event.

Most importantly, he gave the 1939 tournament some much-needed cache by persuading friends Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan to play in the event. Hogan won by 12 shots and earned $700 of the $3,000 purse.

About the Illustrator, Ted Crow Ted is an award-winning illustrator who Iives in Cleveland with his wife Kim.

Just two years later, however, Sorenstam gave a hint as to what was to come, recording three top-10 finishes to become the LPGA Rookie of the Year. Then, in 1995 -- a U.S. Open title and Player of the Year honors. In 2001, she shot a 59 at the Standard Register Ping at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix.

For 11 years Sorenstam was the player on the LPGA Tour. She won 90 international events, including 10 majors, and was Player of the Year a record eight times before retiring in 2008.

In 2003 Sorenstam made history when she became the first female to play in a PGA Tour event since Babe Zaharias, competing in the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. She missed the cut but inspired a generation of young female golfers with her ability and ambition.

The Coors Light Birds Nest has doubled the number of artists playing this year’s concert seriesby programming two acts a night instead of one. The first two nights are heavy on the country, with Jake Owen and Chase Rice on Wednesday, Toby Keith headlining the bill on Thursday with the Band Perry opening. Friday is more about dancing, with EDM superstar Kaskade joined by hip-house hit machine Flo Rida. And Saturday, Feb. 4, brings perhaps the most unusual team-up of the weekend – EDM star Steve Aoki opening for Blink-182. Here’s a guide to get you ready for the weekend.

Jake Owen The Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist pick for 2009, bro-country heartthrob Owen headlined last year’s Country Thunder Arizona festival, inspiring one massive singalong after another, from his own hits to Van Halen’s “Jump” and Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” His best-known hits include three No. 1 appearances on Billboard’s country songs chart – “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” “Alone With You” and “Beachin’” – as well as Top 10 country singles “Startin’ With Me,” “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You,” “The One That Got Away,” “Anywhere With You” and “American Country Love Song.” That last one is from last year’s “American Love,” which topped the country album charts.

Chase Rice Rice co-wrote the biggest-selling country download ever, the Florida Georgia Line hit “Cruise.” As an artist, Rice is best known for the Top 5 country single “Ready Set Roll” and a Top 10 followup called “Gonna Want Tonight.”

Released in the summer of 2014, Rice’s latest album topped the Billboard country charts.

Toby Keith This country superstar was the highest-profile entertainer to agree to play at Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” on the eve of his inauguration, a controversial decision Keith defended. “I don’t apologize for performing for our military,” he said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I performed at events for previous presidents (George W.) Bush and (Barack) Obama and over 200 shows in Iraq and Afghanistan for the USO.” The man’s first single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” was the most-played country single of the ‘90s.

But his biggest hit came 18 long years later with “Red Solo Cup,” a doubleplatinum novelty song extolling the virtues of the plastic cup that holds his beer.

Other singles of note include platinum country chart-toppers “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” “Beer for My Horses” (a duet with Willie Nelson), “American Soldier” and “As Good As I Once Was.”

The Band Perry Singer Kimberly Perry and her brothers, Reid and Neil, went six-times platinum, topping Billboard’s country chart with “If I Die Young,” in which Perry explains what she’d like you do should she not live to see if Adele is still naming her albums after her age when she hits 40. Largely driven by that breakthrough hit, they took home top new artist at the ACM Awards and new artist of the year at the CMAs, where “If I Die Young” picked up song and single of the year. Two subsequent singles, “All Your Life” and the doubleplatinum “Better Dig Two,” also topped the country charts. Other hits of note include “You Lie” and “Done,” both of which went platinum.

Kaskade Hailed in 2011 as the “new face of electronic dance music” in a New York Times profile, Kaskade is Ryan Raddon, a Grammy-nominated DJ/ producer whose latest album, “Automatic,” hit the charts at No. 25. The Chicago-born house star was voted America’s Best DJ twice – in 2011 and 2013 – in the annual DJ Times poll. And if that leaves you wondering if he’s fallen off since then, it should be noted that he finished second in 2016, the same year he headlined the first EDM event in the Los Angeles Center’s history, drawing 20,000 fans to his biggest show ever. The DJ’s 2011 album, “Fire & Ice,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart and earned Kaskade his first of six Grammy nominations.

Flo Rida Flo Rida started off 2008 at No. 1 with “Low,” which held on for a 10week run unmatched by any single since Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” — the biggest difference being that Beyonce was a superstar by then, while “Low” was the Florida rapper’s first official single (and the biggest single of 2008). He was back at No. 1 in 2009 with “Right Round” and again in 2012 with “Whistle.”

But in much the same way that the Beatles’ legacy extends beyond the chart-toppers on “1,” the man has had plenty of non-chart-topping hits that people know and love, including the multiplatinum “In the Ayer,” “Club Can’t Handle Me,” “Good Feeling,” “Wild Ones,” “I Cry,” “G.D.F.R.” and “My House.”

Blink-182 “If Blink-182 fans care at all that founding member Tom DeLonge has left the fold, you certainly wouldn’t have known that from witnessing a 2016 sold-out performance at Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix, where the members of Blink carried on – as they do – in support of a new chart-topping album, “California,” recorded with Alkaline Trio’s Matt

Skiba installed as Mark Hoppus’ new co-leadsinger/guitarist.” So read the opening paragraph of a review in which I would go on to note, “It’s been 17 years since ‘What’s My Age Again?,’ a pop-punk classic whose singalong chorus includes the line ‘Nobody likes you when you’re 23.’ And although there’s been talk of maturity creeping into Blink-182 along the way, the now-44 Hoppus is still in no danger of acting his age.” In other words, don’t sweat the lineup change.

If you liked them when “Dammit” and “All the Small Things” were their latest singles instead of their oldies, this should offer most of what made you a few in the first place, including the sex jokes.

The 2017 edition will mark the 82nd playing of the event and the eighth as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

And he remains one of the highest-paid DJs alive, according to an article in Rolling Stone that summed up the source of Aoki’s enduring appeal with: “His is a relentlessly upbeat, urgently inclusive, there-is-no-suchthing-as-bad-taste brand of dance-floor euphoria epitomized by his trademark onstage move: hurling a heavily frosted cake into one lucky fan’s face.”

With regard to that last part, Aoki modified his policy on throwing cakes in 2015. According to a statement written to accompany the release of a track called “Cake Face,” the superstar DJ explained: “To start the New Year I’m making some new changes and have decided I’ll no longer be caking fans at most festivals.

There might be an exception here or there but for the most part I’ll be saving the CAKE for my headline shows, keeping it exclusive for the diehard fans. So if you want to get caked, come to one of my headline shows.”

He’s co-headlining here with Blink-182, so I could see it going either way.

After graduating from Phoenix Camelback High School, Billy Mayfair thought he would play collegiate golf at Oklahoma State. h He loved everything about the place. The campus, the coach, the facilities. There was just one drawback: the weather. h “The wind blew and it was cold and I said to myself, ‘Why leave a perfect climate?’” Mayfair recalled. h Mayfair went on to have a great collegiate career at Arizona State University and now, at the age of 50 and a member of the PGA Champions Tour, he’s glad he never moved from what he calls the “golf capital of the world.” h “It’s just perfect,” he said. h Mayfair isn’t alone in that view. With the Waste Management Phoenix Open on tap this week we asked golfers who live in the Valley why they think Arizona golf rocks.

What do you appreciate most about the Valley golf scene?

Hahn: “To me it was a no-brainer for our family to move here (from California). You have a choice of I think I heard, 230 golf courses in the greater Phoenix area. The availability of golf clubs as well as how nice the people are and the golf is amazing. Overall golf is just thriving in Arizona.”

Streelman: “I remember driving to the Valley for the first time for a Gateway Tour event in 2002 and I remember seeing the mountains and the desert and it was beautiful weather. I was just overwhelmed by the amount of great golf. I kind of knew right then that’s where I wanted to spend the rest of my life.”

Baddeley: “The condition of the courses year-round is pretty hard to beat, to be honest. And you have a variety of courses. You don’t need to drive far to play a desert course or at a treelined club.”

Garrigus: “As a PGA Tour player they’ll (golf clubs) let you on straight away. You don’t have to be a member.

That’s not the case in other cities. In Arizona it’s a little more, I don’t know what the word is … they treat you like you’re one of them, like you’re one of the members. The people are nicer. There’s not too many, I call them, robots.”

O’Toole: “I’ve only lived here since May but it feels like there are a million golf courses to play. There’s just some cool golf that’s around. Where I live in Scottsdale I’m within 15 minutes of a bunch of great courses.”

Rahm: “You have an unlimited amount of golf courses you can play. It’s unbelievable. Even if you drive (90 minutes) to Payson or two hours to Flagstaff you have great golf courses up there to play. Plus, there are so many Tour golfers that live here that any day you can have a fun match and compete against guys that make you better.

What are your five favorite courses?

Barnes: “The TPC (Scottsdale) is up there. I love Whisper Rock. Phoenix Country Club because I love the change of pace and I’d rank those the best greens in the Valley. They’re unbelievable. Maybe Desert Forest and then We-Ko-Pa, the walking course (Saguaro).”

Mayfair: “My favorite was always Desert Forest. I love Phoenix Country Club. Whisper Rock, Pinnacle Peak Country Club and a gem is the Wigwam Gold course.”

Rahm: “Whisper Rock, Desert Forest, Scottsdale National, TPC and Phoenix Country Club. I like that course a lot. I have never been able to shoot a low round there. I had one round 8-under-par through 16 but I had to go because I had class.”

Hahn: “I really, really like Scottsdale National. They have a brand new par-3 course that’s called the Bad Little Nine. That’s definitely my favorite to play. I just played Estancia and I’d put that up there at No. 2. Some of the views out there are amazing. Third I’m going to say the TPC Scottsdale because the PGA Tour pays me a lot. Fourth I would say Whisper Rock because it’s a great club and you have a lot of PGA Tour pros who are members up there. My fifth would be, Paradise Valley Country Club. It’s a shorter course but the greens are the best in the Valley.”

Garrigus: “My No. 1 is Silverleaf. It’s one of the more challenging courses around the greens. I like the older course at We-Ko-Pa. The Arnold Palmer course at Wildfire. Another one people don’t talk about is Terravita. I like that one, too. Another one is the McCormick Ranch Pine course.

Streelman: “The Upper course at Whisper Rock.

Scottsdale National’s new course. The Whisper Rock lower. The TPC Stadium course. And Kierland, which gave me my start.”

Baddeley: “My favorite is Desert Forest. Whisper Rock is close to the best club I’ve ever been associated with. I love the Talking Stick North course. And the Talon and Raptor courses at Grayhawk.”

What advice would you give a foursome who might be coming to the Valley for a week-long golf vacation?

Garrigus: “I’d just say make sure you play the golf that isn’t so advertised. At the TPC they charge you so much to play that golf course and when the amateurs come out and play the course isn’t in great shape. You can play a round of golf at a reasonable price at the Indian resort courses like Talking Stick or We-Ko-Pa. I would prob-

ably say check out the Raven Golf Club, too. That’s always been my favorite for the public.”

O’Toole: “I would think you’d want to play the TPC course and Wildfire because that’s where the PGA and LPGA play. I think you’d want to find a member to give you access to some of the private clubs. There are a bunch of good public courses, too, like Papago and Troon North.”

Mayfair: “Go online and look up the course ratings. I’d have to believe places like Troon North and the TPC, which are very well known, would be great experiences. If you come here in the summer go up north to Flagstaff and Payson. There are great golf courses up there that are hidden jewels.”

Streelman: “You have to play No. 16 at TPC Scottsdale to try to measure what it’s like to hit one in front of 30,000 people.”

The 19th hole: Is there a restaurant, a food item or even just a setting that blows you away?

Hahn: “At Paradise Valley Country Club there’s no menu and you can pretty much order whatever you want. It’s pretty good. I usually like having an over-easy egg with bacon on a cheese burger.”

Baddeley: “My family, we’re regulars at Grayhawk. We’ll eat on the patio at Phil’s Grill (named after Phil Mickelson). It’s very kid friendly and the food is just rock solid. It’s just very relaxing.

You can watch people come down No. 18 on the Raptor course, feed the fish and ducks and the kids can bring putters and putt on the putting green. We love the atmosphere.”

Garrigus: “I think it’s Tapatio Cliffs (at Phoenix Pointe Hilton). The clubhouse is right above the 18th hole and it’s the highest point in the area. You can see all Continued on Next Page

Streelman: “One of the best views in the world is grabbing a cocktail or ordering hors d'oeuvres at Isabella’s Kitchen (Grayhawk) at sunset. You can see all of Scottsdale from the top of the Talon driving range. It’s exactly the place to unwind whether you have kids or you’re on a date.”

Streelman: “The Upper course at Whisper Rock.

You get up in the mountains at Nos. 12, 13, 14 and 15 and you look down and see all of Phoenix. It’s a magical view. It’s one of my favorite places on F O O T H I L L S
