Tour studies Open style Phoenix event can provide ideas for life without Woods and Mickelson SCOTT BORDOW AZCENTRAL SPORTS COLUMNIST

The best Billy Horschel can recall the story, longtime PGA Tour pro Kenny Perry was eating at a Scottsdale restaurant one night when he saw a woman sporting a badge to the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“Have you been to the tournament?”

Perry said.

“Yeah, I go every night,” the woman replied.

That’s the Phoenix Open, the only golf tournament in the world where more people are walking onto the grounds at 5:30 p.m. than leaving. This week will be no different: If the weather cooperates, a field that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson, among others, likely will attract more than 200,000 people during Saturday’s third round and more than 600,000 for the week, both of which would be PGA Tour records.

The party will go on after the sun goes down as well, with thousands of fans flocking to the Birds Nest to see and be seen and hear acts such as Kid Rock and Darius Rucker.

“Some people don’t even know there’s a golf tournament going on,” said Horschel, who won the FedEx Cup championship last September and the $10 million bonus that went with it. “That’s really cool.”

The Phoenix Open’s success can be instructive for the PGA Tour as it thinks about life without Mickelson, who is 44, and Woods, who will turn 40 in December. They have been the faces of the Tour for the better part of 20 years and their eventual absence or increasing irrelevance – Mickelson went winless in 2014 and Woods hasn’t won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open – is a reality that can’t be brushed off, no matter how often the Tour heralds great younger players like Fowler, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.

Woods in particular moves the needle; when he announced last year that he would be forced to miss The Masters because of a back injury, single-day ticket prices fell from $1,165 to $940, a drop of almost 20 percent. The tournament drew a 7.8 TV rating, the lowest since Phil Mickelson won on Easter Sunday in 2004.

To be fair, the Tour’s success can’t solely be measured by TV ratings or ticket prices. As CBS analyst Gary McCord pointed out, the PGA Tour attracts viewers with high incomes, which in turns entices advertisers.

“We do not look at ratings. If we looked at ratings and acquiesced to ratings, we’d never show up on television,” McCord said. “I’ve been doing this for 29 years and it’s all about the demographics and who we’re selling products to. They like it, they back it, they pay for the ad space. That’s the way it’s been going forever.”

Still, the Phoenix Open is the rare event on tour that has thrived without Woods, who is playing here for the first time since 2001. That’s one reason representatives from several PGA Tour events will be in Scottsdale this week.

diences and is a transcendent sporting event in the Valley.

“I think the connection this event has with the region and the community is as special as any event not just on the PGA Tour but in sports,” said PGA Tour Deputy Commissioner Jay Monahan. “You look at the crowds and the social currency that this tournament generates, it’s something every event in sports and entertainment seeks. They have it and have it in spades.”

What produced the love affair between the Phoenix Open and the Valley?

Start with the Birds Nest, the 48,000 square-foot tent that doubles as a Scottsdale nightclub/concert venue the week of the tournament. Look at any picture or video from the Birds Nest and you’ll see a crowd that skews considerably younger than your average PGA Tour fan.

“I would love every tournament to have a couple of concerts during the week,” Horschel said. “Somebody who doesn’t know anything about golf might say, ‘Let’s go to the tournament and see

the concert that night.’ I think it would bring more exposure.”

Some tournaments might not have the space or the inclination to duplicate the experience of the Birds Nest. But it’s just one example of the Phoenix Open not treating golf like it’s open-heart surgery.

“It would be great if we saw more interaction with the crowds and saw more smiles (at other events),” said CBS analyst David Feherty. “They are trying to make a living but, yeah, at the end of the day I think it would be nice to take one notch out of the belt.

“There’s a fine line between taking it too seriously and letting too much of it slip. The Phoenix Open gets it right.”

The most celebrated attraction, of course, is the par-3 16th hole, which will have a seating capacity of more than 16,000 this week. It is the loudest, rowdiest hole on the PGA Tour and an antidote to the hush that accompanies every other golf tournament.

The problem: No. 16 doesn’t travel well. Golfers appreciate it as a one-time-

But when he received the invitation to play for the first time in Wednesday’s Annexus Pro-Am at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

Qu es t i o n : How long have you been playing golf?

An s w er : I’ve played most of my life.

Growing up my grandfather would play all the time and we’d hit balls in the backyard. But I never took it seriously until probably my rookie year in 2011.

Q: Why then?

A: Well, with Ian Kennedy, Daniel Hudson and Joe Saunders the whole ‘Pitchers need to be good at golf’ thing rang true.

Hanging with those guys, I had to. They definitely made you want to get better.

Q: So are you any good? What’s your handicap?

A: I never do the whole handicap figuring out thing but I usually shoot probably in the mid-80s. I haven’t played a whole lot. My main focus is to just play nice and easy. The tortoise wins, not the hare.

Q: What’s your best score?

A: I broke 80 one time. I shot a 78 at the Phil Mickelson course, McDowell Mountain. I played that one the day before it opened to the public and I had been playing quite a bit so my game was as good as it has been. But some of these guys when we talk about golf, they’re talking about breaking 70 or shooting even par. I’m miles away from that.

Q: Is there a lot of time during the season

A: There are some opportunities. Some guys play on their off days. Last year for the most part I didn’t. I just spent time enjoying the cities we were in and exploring what they had. This off-season I didn’t make it much of a priority to get out. I enjoy it but it’s not one of those things I’m so in love with that I have to do it. I figure if I do that now it’ll spoil retire-

ment.

Q: So who’s the best player on the Diamondbacks?

A: That’s a good question. I’ve heard that Tuffy (Gosewisch) is actually pretty good. Aaron Hill and Cody Ross.

There are a lot of guys but with all the turnover we’ve had I haven’t had a chance to play with too many of them.

Q: You’ve stood on a mound and pitched in front of 30,000 people. But will you be more nervous standing on the first tee of the pro-am?

A: Yeah, getting that first shot out of the way will be good. I’ve always said I’d be a better golfer if there was a gallery because they would be able to find my ball if I sprayed it. I’ve talked to a few friends about what it’s like to be on Number 16 so I’m going to get an approximate distance of that hole and hit that shot a thousand times before we get there.

Q: Are you worried about hitting a fan in the gallery?

A: I haven’t thought about it too much. I hope it doesn’t happen.

Q: As long as you have a better swing than Charles Barkley you should be fine.

A: Aesthetically it looks a little smoother. I’ve tried to iron out the hitches.

Q: Sounds like you’re looking forward to the day.

A: I am. I followed Ian around a couple of years ago and I followed Aaron around last year offering incredible support with his (Fathead cutout). To get to play is quite an honor. It’s such a unique event and completely different from everything that typifies golf.

Added Horschel: “We (golfers) understand there’s going to be a lot of people and a lot of commotion and crazy stuff going on. It’s really cool to see. But not every week.”

The bottom line: As the PGA Tour prepares to move on from Woods and Mickelson, it can look to the Phoenix Open for ideas and inspiration but not as a blueprint for what the Tour should be.

“The challenge with trying to replicate what’s done at the Waste Management Phoenix Open is that this event is so unique,” Monahan said. “To do it at other venues would almost look disingenuous.

“It has its own brand and its own essence. It’s just a very special week.”

Changes aim to toughen TPC Scottsdale JOHN DAVIS SPECIAL FOR AZCENTRAL SPORTS

The “greatest show on grass” has plenty of new grass as the world’s best golfers head to TPC Scottsdale this week for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The course reopened in November after a seven-month, $15 million renovation project that included changes to every hole under the direction of Tom Weiskopf, who co-designed the original layout with Jay Morrish.

That original course, which opened in 1986, no longer provided significant challenges to today’s PGA Tour players, and as a result, it yielded some of the lowest scores in tour history.

Tour pro Robert Garrigus of Scottsdale expects that to change this year.

“I would think that it will make a difference of 4 or 5 shots (in the winning score),” Garrigus said. “I don’t expect anyone to be shooting 20-under like they have in the past.”

Weiskopf said the main focus of the project was to make the course more enjoyable for public golfers, and at the same time, make it more relevant to today’s long hitters.

The most significant part of the project was redoing every bunker, which brought them more into play. They were filled with Augusta White sand, which had been tested for two years in the practice area and added aesthetic value with their contrast to fairways and greens.

Even though there are fewer bunkers overall, the result, Garrigus said, is, “They have really tightened up a lot of tee shots and gotten rid of the bailout areas.”

Weiskopf said those changes were made after studying five years worth of data collected by the PGA Tour on primary landing areas.

Four holes – Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 14 – have new greens, while the other 14 were resurfaced and, in some cases, reshaped.

Also, more than 250 trees were planted.

Course general manager Brad Williams also expects scores to be higher this year, but doesn’t think it will take long for players to adjust.

“The greens will only be about seven months old, so they will be pretty firm and less receptive to approach shots,” Williams said. “I expect scores to be somewhat higher in Year 1, but I really think we need to wait two or three years to get a true comparison.”

posure to early-morning sun. Those holes have been the culprits of frost delays in the past.

Weiskopf said the changes also will aid fan movement by relieving bottlenecks in some areas.

“The changes were made with fans in mind as well as the golfers,” Weiskopf said. “We wanted to present a golf course fans are used to seeing and keep its feel intact, but also make it more challenging for today’s players.”

Fans will notice that the par-5 13th hole, which is well known for its “Tiger boulder” incident, no longer has a split fairway. The former desert island that used to divide the fairway now is off to the left side of the hole, creating a much narrower landing area. A hidden “coffin bunker,” so named because it is about the size of a coffin, has been placed in front of the green and should provide for some awkward shots.

But the most dramatic changes were made to the 14th hole, a par-4 that now can play as long as 495 yards, uphill to a heavily-bunkered, elevated green.

Garrigus, who is one of the tour’s longer hitters, said that, “Even if I hammer a drive, I’ve still got 6-iron or more for my second shot (to reach the green).

As it is, that will be the toughest hole on the course.”

Weiskopf was determined to keep the risk-reward value of the four-hole finishing stretch intact and said it might be enhanced by the changes to the 14th hole, which will produce plenty of bogeys.

That could prompt more risks, and more drama, as the players turn for home.

That home stretch is where many of the past Opens have been won and lost,

with golfers willing to gamble to shave strokes, particularly on the weekend.

The most noticeable change over the finishing four is on the 18th, where bunkers were expanded at the far end of the lake stretching down the left side. Grass

islands were added to the bunkers, creating a “church pews” look.

In the past, some players have taken direct aim over the water and bunkers, but it’s doubtful that they will risk it now because tee shots would need to carry about 345 yards to clear them.

Even though bunkers are more prominent, Garrigus said, they also are more playable.

“They were too inconsistent before,” he said. “Now they’re all the same and they’re all playable. You might be in them more, but you’ll still have a pretty good shot.”

From the championship tees, the course will play at 7,261 yards, an increase of just 45 yards. Three holes actually will play slightly shorter this year.

“What Tom did is he made it more strategic, more relevant and more interesting,” Williams said. “Simply making it harder wasn’t the goal. If we just wanted to make it harder, we could have done that pretty easily. The thing is, these players are so good they’re able to adjust to anything you throw at them. They’ll figure it out pretty quick.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone having a better month than Billy Horschel did in September of 2014.

He won the final two events of the FedEx Cup playoffs and the $10 million bonus that went to the FedEx Cup points leader.

“Obviously it’s been a pretty exciting few months,” Horschel said. “To win the FedEx Cup is life changing.”

Two days after his bank account increased by eight figures, his wife Brittany delivered their first child, a girl named Skylar.

So what in the world can Horschel do for an encore in 2015?

“I’m trying to see how great of a player I can be, you know, reach my level and my potential as a player,” he said. “I have to keep getting better. And one of the things I want to do is I want to be a little more consistent this year.”

That journey continues at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where Horschel, 28, will be among the favorites in the 132-player field. He’s had mixed success at the Tournament Players Club in Scottsdale – he missed the cut last year after shooting 1-over par through the first two rounds – but he comes into this year’s tournament a different player and a different man.

Horschel’s lone PGA Tour win before last September’s success came in the 2013 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Winning the FedEx Cup – and holding off Rory McIlroy in the final round of the Tour Championship - has infused him with the confidence that he can play with the best

in the world.

“Being able to win a tournament (the Tour Championship) when I was leading going into Sunday and go head to head with the best player in game sort of adds fuel to the fire,” Horschel said. “I know I can get the job done.”

That belief is accompanied by a newfound calm on the golf course. In his early days on Tour, Horschel was a hothead – “I wouldn’t say that’s too strong of a word. I’m not afraid to admit it,” he said – but Skylar’s birth has tempered his emotions.

“I’ve wanted to be a little bit more composed and relaxed on the course and with Skylar being born I have a sense of

peace within me,” he said. “I’m a little bit more patient. I can laugh when things don’t go right.

“I’m always going to be a guy that gets fired up and emotional when things go well and have a little bit more emotion when things don’t go well but now it won’t get the better of me. Right now if I shoot 65 or 85 she (Skylar) doesn’t know.

It puts things in perspective. Golf isn’t life and death. There’s always a new day tomorrow to go out and prove yourself.”

Horschel has two goals this year: Win a major and earn enough points to put him in great position to play for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2016.

Although under consideration, he wasn’t one of Tom Watson’s three captain’s picks last year.

“There’s a fire in me that wants to be on that team in two years and get the trophy back for the United States,” he said.

“I will do everything I can to make that team and when I make it, do everything I can to make the team victorious.”

For whatever reason, Moore plays the TPC course extremely well. He finished fourth in 2013 and tied for sixth last year, just 3 shots behind Stadler. One of these years he might wind up with the firstplace check.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open will be the first event of the year for one of the biggest names in golf.

6. Billy Horschel

1. Tiger Woods

Horschel closed last year with wins in the BMW Championship and The Tour Championship by Coca-Cola to claim the FexEdCup and the $10 million bonus. The late-season surge should propel him into 2015 with a world of confidence.

Tiger always is the one to watch no matter which tournament he enters. He’s never won here, and he hasn’t played the Tournament Players Club course since 2001, so it’s impossible to know how he’ll do. But all eyes will be on him because, well, he’s Tiger.

7. Graham DeLaet DeLaet was 14th in driving distance last year so, like Watson, he can carve up the par-5s at the TPC. He also finished tied for second last year so he should feel comfortable on the course from the getgo.

2. Phil Mickelson This is one of Mickelson’s favorite stops on the PGA Tour, and it’s easy to understand why. He’s idolized by the fans, and he’s won the tournament three times, most recently in 2013 when he went wire to wire after shooting a 60 in the first round. Mickelson went winless in 2014, but he’s slimmed down and anxious for a bounce-back year. This would be a good place to start.

3. Rickie Fowler Fowler used to be better known for his wild colors than his golf game, but that changed last year when he finished in the top 10 in all four majors. Fowler should thrive off the energy provided by the large crowds, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was holding the championship trophy on Sunday afternoon.

The 27-year-old Streb might not be well known to the general public, but he has a lot of game and he’s playing well, leading the FedExCup point standings as of midJanuary. He’s already won once in the wrap-around season.

9. Jordan Spieth All the 21-year-old Spieth has done since turning pro is win three tournaments and finish in the top-10 18 times. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2014, and he’ll likely contend for a major – or two – this year. Expect a lot of young ladies to be following Spieth’s group.

4. Bubba Watson Watson was the runner-up last year to Kevin Stadler, and he has the length to overwhelm the par-5s on the course and go low on the vulnerable back nine. The lack of deep rough enables Watson to bomb it off the tee without much regret, giving him short irons to most holes.
