WELCOME FRIENDS!

Many of you are returning to our great state, and for that, we say thank you and welcome back! For some of you, this might be your first visit to Arizona — and what can we say, except you’re in for quite a treat! SHOWCASING ARIZONA This Winter Visitors Guide 2014 is our opportunity to brag just a bit and showcase a snapshot of local events, attractions, casinos, sports venues, shopping, dining and day trips. We’ve also got the scoop on popular recreation spots, movie theaters, healthcare

choices and more. For our returning friends, there’s even a look back at some significant stories you might have missed while you were gone. But first, let’s start with our worldfamous winter weather, where the average high temperatures in central and southern Arizona tend to hover in the 70s (Fahrenheit), producing a plethora of ah-inspiring days and kick-back-and relax nights. However, as fabulous as they are, this unique state is so much more than just sun-splashed days and cool winter’s evenings!

Indeed, Arizona boasts a wealth of scenic wonders including the spectacular Grand Canyon, a bevy of blissful recreational opportunities (both indoor and outdoor), and plenty of places where you can play and pursue your passion for golf, tennis, hiking and more. In addition, Arizona is home to an amazing array of cultural diversity, with a particular focus on our Native American, Spanish and Mexican heritage, so be sure to take advantage of visiting any of a number of ancient ruins, first-class museums and/or art galleries.

ACCESS TO MORE It’s important to note that this chockfull guide is just the tip of the proverbial things-to-do-and see iceberg. Since your last visit The Arizona Republic now delivers more local news and stories – plus more national coverage from USA TODAY. We invite you to subscribe to The Arizona Republic to access MORE and see all of the changes we have made in print as well as our redesign of azcentral.com. For details on how to subscribe, see the facing page. From our Arizona home to yours, thanks again for visiting us — and here’s to a happy, memory-filled visit! Cheers!

Here’s a look at what you missed in the Valley of the Sun over the last six months. ARIZONA SETS ITS SIGHTS ON THE SKY Arizona is home to a number of research programs and companies that have caught the eye of NASA officials. In July, NASA launched the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 satellite. Built by Orbital Sciences in Gilbert, the satellite will measure carbon dioxide levels in the Earth’s atmosphere. And when NASA launches its next mission to Mars in 2020, it will carry a pair of zoom cameras designed by an ASU planetary science professor. GETTING AROUND One of the country’s largest metro areas, the Valley relies on efficient transportation routes to keep the population moving. PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT services more than 100,000 passengers who arrive from and depart to more than 80 domestic and 20 international locations around the globe. Conveniently located in the heart of Phoenix, Sky Harbor is one of the most accessible airports in the country. Riders can park at the METRO

light rail station at 44th and Washington streets and take the PHX Sky Train directly to and from the airport. The Sky Train, which has served millions of passengers in its first year, also services the East Economy parking lot and Terminal 4, which sees 80 percent of Sky Harbor’s traffic. Construction is currently underway to extend Sky Train services to Terminals 2 and 3.

Field, and Glendale Municipal Airport. The abundance of airports lets travelers fly directly to their destination and avoid the hassle of additional travel time.

The VALLEY METRO light rail is about to get even bigger, with a 3-mile extension into Mesa that will add four new stops set to be complete in early 2015. The light rail will be 23 miles in length and stretch from North Phoenix to the heart of Downtown Mesa. Light rail riders have The Valley is also home to numerous REGIONAL AIRPORTS, including Tucson access to some of the best attractions and International Airport, Scottsdale Airport, entertainment in the Valley, including US Airways Center, two campuses of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Falcon

Arizona State University and the Mesa Arts Center. Valley METRO also operates Phoenix’s bus system that serves more than 50 million passengers every year. The Valley is home to one of the country’s most advanced FREEWAY SYSTEMS, with Interstate 17 serving as residents’ connection to Interstate 40 and Interstate 10 as well as being the major north-south connection for metro Phoenix. State Route 51, Route 60 and Loops 101, 202 and 303 connect the suburbs with the rest of the city so you are always a quick drive away from your destination.

Tee off! Wintertime’s the right time for golf in Arizona BY PAULA HUBBS COHEN

Covered by a canopy of near-perpetual blue sky, metropolitan Phoenix and Tucson and their neighboring communities are home to more golf courses than you could hope to play in one visit — in fact, at last count, there were more than 300 — making the state one of the world’s premier golf destinations. Blessed with spectacular scenery and topography, some courses occupy desert canyons where civilization feels a world away, while others are part of opulent resorts boasting a wealth of high-end amenities. Many of the courses were designed by some of the most legendary names in golf (think Nicklaus, Weiskopf and more…), and most don’t have just one signature hole, but many. What’s more, if you’re yearning for a course that would

challenge a low-handicapper while at the same time keep a high-handicapper’s head in the game — we got ‘em. Want to play a lush, grass-lined course? Check — we got those, too. Pining for a desert layout embraced by saguaro-studded mountains? You guessed it — Arizona has plenty of those as well. Here are just a very few of Arizona’s captivating, can’t-miss, can’t-wait-totee-off courses: ARIZONA NATIONAL Snuggled in the foothills of the stunning Santa Catalina Mountains, this Tucsonarea course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It follows the rugged natural flow of the land, skirting dramatic rock outcroppings, waltzing past soaring saguaro forests and skittering across shady mesquite-lined arroyos. • Par: 69/71; yardage: 4,414–6,785 • Info: ArizonaNationalGolfClub.com; 520-749-4089

THE GOLF CLUB AT DOVE MOUNTAIN Surrounded by the gorgeous Tortolita mountain range, The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is located in Marana, just outside of Tucson. Nestled amongst centuries-old saguaros, the Club’s 27 Jack Nicklaus-designed holes sport elevations ranging from 2,300 to 3,200 feet. The three 9-hole courses (Saguaro, Tortolita and Wild Burro) are considered as expert as they are enjoyable. • Saguaro: Par 36; yardage: 2,645–3,894 • Tortolita: Par 36; yardage: 2,638–3,955 • Wild Burro: Par 36; yardage: 2,596–3,897 • Info: TheGolfClubAtDove Mountain.com; 520-572-3500 GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB Graced with panoramic views of Scottsdale’s magnificent McDowell Mountains, Grayhawk Golf Club’s Raptor course was designed by Tom Fazio. The course meanders across shaded washes and gentle rolling hills trimmed with

towering saguaros and a variety of desert trees. Most of the greens are perched above deep bunkers and grass collection areas. Designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, Grayhawk’s Talon Course is one of the highest rated daily-fee golf courses in Arizona. Framed by breathtaking mountain views, the back-nine of the course was built around a series of box canyons, and many holes flaunt stands of mature desert trees. • Raptor: Par 72; yardage: 5,309–7,135 • Talon: Par 72; yardage: 5,143–6,973 • Info: GrayhawkGolf.com; 480-502-1800 TPC SCOTTSDALE TPC Scottsdale shows off with two championship courses, the Stadium Course — designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf — and the Champions Course, crafted by Randy Heckenkemper.
