n December when Phil Mickelson dropped into the Valley to be inducted into the Waste Management Phoenix Open Hall of Fame, he spread so much good will that he could have been working for the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau.

He praised the tournament’s sponsoring organization, the Thunderbirds.

He raved about the title sponsor, calling the partnership with a golf tournament a great way for Waste Management to get the message out that it is an “environmentally thoughtful” company.

He heaped more praise on the now-famous No. 16 “Stadium Hole” at TPC Scottsdale.

He spoke glowingly about what was happening with the Cardinals and called receiver Larry Fitzgerald “the classiest athlete” in professional sports.

Arians loves thrill of competitive golf azcentral sports’ Bob McManaman reached out to Cardinals coach Bruce Arians while he was scouting at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., to talk about his plans to play in the Annexus Pro-Am next week at TPC Scottsdale.

He discussed all things golf, with a little football mixed in:

R. JOHNSON, ERVING, E. SMITH HEADLINE FIELD FOR PRO-AM Former Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson and basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving will headline this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open Annexus Pro-Am.

Question: I know you’ve got a pretty good golf game, but are you a little nervous about playing in front of so many people?

Answer: Yeah, definitely. It’s totally different than playing with three buddies for five bucks. But yeah, it’ll be fun.

The event tees off at 8:30 a.m.

Wednesday on TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course.

Q: Have you gotten a taste of the TPC Scottsdale course yet?

A: No. I really would like to get out there early and play it, but I don’t know if I’m going to be able to.

Other notables in the field include Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill, former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon, Washington Redskins great Darrell Green and country-music star Jake Owen.

Q: I’m sure you’re familiar with the lore of the 16th hole. Are you looking forward to that more than anything?

A: Yes, indeed. I really am. It’ll be fun. To see it, hear it, feel it and be a part of it is really exciting.

Johnson is a five-time Cy Young Award winner, 10-time All-Star, 2001 World Series Champion and MVP with the Diamondbacks, a 303-game winner and ranks second all-time on the career strikeout list (4,875) behind Nolan Ryan (5,714). Johnson last played in the Wednesday ProAm in 2002.

Q: Is there a particular golfer you’re hoping to meet?

A: No, not really. All those guys are such phenomenal players. It’s just really cool to go on the range and watch those guys warm up and do their thing and see how precise they are about everything they do.

Q: What’s your handicap these days?

A: My handicap is 6.6.

Q: That’s pretty dang good. What’s the weak part of your game?

A: The worst part of my game is the short game. I’m a good putter, but I’m struggling with my wedges right now. I’ve been working hard on it, but it’s too dang cold. I’ve been over in Georgia freezing my tail off, and I should be back in Phoenix working on it.

Q: Have you ever had a hole in one?

A: I’ve got one. It was an 8-iron on a par 3 about 152 yards. Hit it about 4 feet behind the hole and spun it back in. Then I jumped in the lake. It was at Lakewood Oaks in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Q: Tell me what you love about the game of golf, specifically? Is it just being outdoors, the thrill of hitting that perfect shot or the camaraderie? What do like the best about golf?

A: The best thing about golf for me is the bet.

I used to play racquetball every day, but golf is the only way I can compete anymore. It’s competing against yourself, the golf course, but to me, it’s a $2 bet, a 25-cent bet. It’s just the thrill of winning.

Q: Have you ever thought about quitting it when it frustrates you?

A: No. It’s never me, it’s always the damn clubs. And when they don’t work, I throw ’em in the lake to teach ’em a lesson. Then it’s time to go buy some new ones.

Erving will be playing in his second consecutive Annexus ProAm. He was the 1980-81 NBA MVP and was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996.

A: I’m a TaylorMade guy.

Q: Who’s your favorite golfer?

A: Oh, gosh. I love watching Tiger (Woods) compete. I like watching Phil (Mickelson) play ’cause he plays the way I play.

Q: Oh yeah? You’re a risk-taker out on the course, too?

A: You bet. No risk-it, no biscuit. I got to play with Robert Garrigus a few weeks ago at Silverleaf in Scottsdale, and I’ve never seen anybody hit a golf ball that far. And what a great guy he is.

Q: Will you get to stick around and watch any of the Phoenix Open, or are you going to be too busy with football?

A: No, I plan on going out and enjoying it.

Just the spectacle itself, it’s a great event. It’s as well-run as any tournament on the tour.

Q: Let’s talk a little football. The NFL draft is in May. What are you excited about with this draft and some of the prospects that could land to you at pick No. 20 in the first round?

A: I think it’s on the lines of scrimmage. We’ve got to continue to build our offensive and defensive line. I like our skill players, but we’re always looking for speed. I like the big, physical guys, a speed pass rusher. Speed is always

the thing for me. But with our two lines of scrimmage, just continue to develop them and get better.

Owen, who will be performing at the Birds Nest on Thursday, took up golf at an early age and began pursuing a career as a professional, winning his first tournament at age 15. His plan to play golf at Florida State was derailed by a wakeboarding accident that led to reconstructive shoulder surgery.

Q: What would you say to people who really want to see you draft a quarterback at No. 20?

A: Why? Q: Well, to have one for beyond next season to ultimately replace Carson Palmer, I should guess?

A: Well, we’ve got two pretty good ones that are younger (Drew Stanton and Ryan Lindley).

But for us right now it’s about winning a championship. I don’t think we can afford to have a guy come in like that. I’m not a believer in a guy learning anything sitting on the bench. You have to play; it’s the only way you learn. He’s got to get the reps in practice, he’s got to be under center and throwing all the time or he’s not going to get any better.

Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher. A three-time Super Bowl champion, Smith played 15 seasons in the NFL for the Cowboys and Cardinals.

McMahon played 15 seasons in the NFL and is a two-time Super Bowl champion (XX and XXXI). He lives in Scottsdale.

Tee times for the pro-am will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The tee times for participating amateurs and celebrities will be announced Tuesday night.

Note: Arians will be hosting the Bruce Arians Celebrity Golf Classic on March 7-9 at the Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale.

He noted Arizona State’s rise in the Pac-12 in football and basketball (and would attend the Pac-12 Championship Game that ASU lost to Stanford at Sun Devil Stadium).

And, of course, he threw in a plug for his brother Tim, who is the golf coach at ASU and for the Sun Devils’ golf star, Jon Rahm, calling him “a heck of a player” who we all will see playing in Phoenix Opens for years.

Yep, Phil really spread the love around.

Hey, it’s only fair.

After all, Mickelson has felt nothing but love from the Valley since his days at Arizona State, when he was a three-time NCAA champion and U.S. Amateur Championship winner.

He even won the PGA Tour’s 1991 Northern Telecom Open in Tucson as an amateur while still at ASU, and he provided fans that day with a glimpse of his every-guy persona when he told his college buddies during a television interview to get the keg ready because he was headed back to Tempe.

Never, though, will the love be greater than this week when Mickelson returns for his 25th Phoenix Open as the defending champion seeking a tournament-record fourth title.

“I’ve always felt pressure to play well there,” Mickelson said. “I always thought that if I could play well there, nothing would be more exciting than coming down the stretch being in contention and playing the 16th hole and those last few holes with a chance to win.

“And that holds true. I’ve been fortunate enough to win three times there through the years, and every time I come down the stretch it is really the greatest feeling with that environment, all of those people and the16th hole, especially having lived there and gone to school at Arizona State.

“It is really an incredible feeling to get that kind of support, and it’s an unusual feeling for a golfer because it’s very much like a football atmosphere.”

Only Mark Calcavecchia, Gene Littler and Arnold Palmer have won the tournament three times, and only Calcavecchia has won three at TPC Scottsdale.

Mickelson, who went wire-to-wire last year here, has become somewhat of a modern-day Desert Fox. He has won six times in Arizona, matching Johnny Miller for the most victories in our state by a PGA Tour player.

“Nice!” Mickelson said, when told he could knock off Miller with another victory.

Mickelson also has won three times in Tucson and the San Diego area and twice in LaQuinta, Calif., where he maintains a home.

Tag on his four victories at Pebble Beach, where his grandfather was a caddie back in the 1920s, and two more at Riviera in Los Angeles, and17 of his 42 PGA Tour victories have come within about a six-hour drive of his home.

For perspective, consider Curtis Strange won 17 in his whole career.

From the beginning, fans have embraced Mickelson as a regular guy who just happens to be one of the two or three best golfers on the planet.

Never are the crowds larger at TPC Scottsdale on Saturday during tournament week than when Mickelson is in contention. In each of the years he has won there — 1996, 2005 and 2013 — the tournament broke the Saturday attendance record.

“It’s so much fun on the weekend to have a chance to win in Phoenix,” Mickelson said. “It’s fun to be in the mix, especially on Saturday when the crowds are larger than any day on the PGA Tour. I love being in the final group.”

In 1996, the final round was played on a Saturday because Super Bowl XXX was to be played in Tempe the next day.

The single-day Phoenix Open attendance record was obliterated by almost 40,000 that Saturday.

And Mickelson never has taken that connection with fans, here or elsewhere, for granted. No star on the PGA Tour

spends as much time signing autographs as Mickelson. And few are asked for a signature more often than him.

Long before New York crowds adopted Mickelson during the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, where his gallery rivaled the Arnie’s Army crowds that followed Arnold Palmer back in the day, the Valley already had adopted Mickelson as one of its own.

Sure, he grew up and became a junior golf phenomenon in San Diego, but it was at ASU that he began to emerge. Then he made the Valley his home for the first 12 years of his career on the PGA Tour before returning to the San Diego area, where he grew up.

Mickelson formed business relationships in the early years here that remain strong today. He was involved with the group that developed Grayhawk Golf Club, where the restaurant still is named “Phil’s Grill.” And his first course design was a layout at Whisper Rock Golf Club.

He even met his wife Amy at TPC Scottsdale while taking part in a Phoenix Open putting contest to benefit Special Olympics. Amy, a Suns dancer at the time, was there representing the team.

Not coincidentally, Mickelson soon was a regular on the front row at Suns game whenever he wasn’t on the road.

Mickelson’s caddie, Jim Mackay, eventually married one of Amy’s best friends, and the couple lives in Scottsdale.

“I love getting back (to the Valley),” said Mickelson, who has hinted that he might return at some point in the future.

“I don’t know if it will be on a permanent basis or not; we’ll see. But it’s so fun to come back and see everybody.”

Mickelson has been instrumental in building the tournament’s wild popularity in the Valley and its identity on the PGA Tour.

Perhaps it was inevitable, too, that based on its design the now-famous and sometimes infamous No. 16 “Stadium Hole” at TPC Scottsdale would become a popular spot to watch golf, especially with the Thunderbirds seeking each year to try something new.

But it was Mickelson who first drew thousands of his ASU classmates there and helped give the hole its raucous identity when he competed in the tournament in1990 and1991while still playing for the Sun Devils.

“The 16th just became the place to hang out because they had beer stands out there and had all these great-looking college guys and gals,” Mickelson said.

“It was just a fun environment. The Thunderbirds had this vision of creating something different and something unique to separate themselves, and they did a great job of it.

“The Bird’s Nest is another popular place each year, and the biggest party Phoenix has. It used to be right behind the 18th green when I was an amateur, and it was crazy back then, too.”

It is a golf Mardi Gras. Or maybe it should be Mardi Grass. Whatever you want to call it, when the Waste Management Phoenix Open rolls into town, it gives the Valley one week each year to wrap its arms around a favorite adopted son.

And what it week it is.



Grayhawk deal says much about Mickelson’s loyalty

Phil Mickelson is one of the more indemand athletes in the world. Last year, Forbes listed Mickelson as No. 52 on its Celebrity 100, a spot behind tennis star Rafael Nadal and ahead of actor Ashton Kutcher. He is seventh on the publication’s list of highest-paid athletes.

His golf winnings of $4.7 million paled in comparison with Forbes’ estimation of his $44 million in yearly endorsement revenue, thanks to high-profile representation deals with the likes of Rolex, KPMG, Barclays, Callaway Golf and ExxonMobil.

Mickelson lists all his corporate partners on his website. Also listed is Grayhawk Golf Course, a 36-hole public course in Scottsdale. Grayhawk was one of the earlier business relationships of Mickelson’s pro career and serves as a prime example of how he approaches his career outside golf.

In 1992, about 18 months before opening Grayhawk, Gregg Tryhus was looking for someone in the golf world to sign to an endorsement deal. The president and owner of Grayhawk Development, a Scottsdale real-estate business, and business associate Del Cochran had their eyes on Mickelson.

Cochran had a personal relationship with Mickelson and his Arizona State coach-turned-agent Steve Loy, and approached them about the opportunity.

It was hardly a deal of equal benefit for both sides. Had Grayhawk been derailed along the way in its development before opening in 1994, it would have looked bad for Mickelson. Meanwhile, there was relatively little cache Grayhawk could offer such a rising star.

“If we’d have been bad guys or dishonest or anything, we could have hurt Phil a lot more than we could have helped him,” Cochran said. “But he knew that we were that kind of people. It was a good match at that point for both of us. He be-

lieved in us, and we believed in them. In the bottom of the ninth, that’s all that matters.”

Twenty-four years, 42 tour victories and five major championships later, the Grayhawk logo still is on the 43-yearold’s golf bag. He still looks up Cochran and Tryhus when he returns to Arizona, usually for a few rounds of golf.

Long ago, Mickelson’s success priced him out of Grayhawk’s range. What he receives from the golf club isn’t a pittance — “It’s commas,” Cochran said — but Tryhus calls it a ball mark compared with what he gets from Callaway or KPMG. But business always has been about personal relationships for Mickelson, and few are stronger than his relationship with Grayhawk.

Mickelson was also instrumental in the success of another Arizona golf venture — Whisper Rock Golf Club. Tryhus began Whisper Rock with the idea of creating a golf club that is the stark opposite of Grayhawk. Though Grayhawk is a public course, Whisper Rock is extremely exclusive, and it includes 30-plus pros as paying members.

Mickelson designed Whisper Rock’s lower course, his first course design.

More important, he was one of the first dues-paying members, sending a strong message to other pros who would likely play gratis at most other clubs.

Who knows how much Mickelson’s relationship with Tryhus and Cochran has colored his future endeavors. He might have approached any opportunity with such a personal touch, or the nature of his deal with Grayhawk might have guided his business philosophy.

Whatever the case, it’s worked out for both Mickelson and Grayhawk. To Tryhus, nobody is as genuine when it comes to commercial relationships.

“I think he’s the best on tour at that,” Tryhus said. “I don’t think anybody is even close. These kids should pay attention and learn.”

Mickelson’s career has family ties

To those who have followed his career, a vivid memory of Phil Mickelson is from the 1999 U.S. Open, where he finished 1 shot behind Payne Stewart after Stewart’s dramatic, 15-foot putt on the final hole.

Mickelson had worn a beeper throughout the event because his wife Amy was on the verge of delivering their first child. He had made it known that if the beeper went off at off at any time during the week, he immediately would pull out and head home to Scottsdale.

After Stewart’s winning putt dropped, he placed his hands on the sides of Mickelson’s face and told him, “You’re going to be a father. There is nothing as special as that.” Four months later, Stewart died in a plane crash.

Fast forward to last year’s U.S. Open at Merion, and one of the big story lines was Mickelson flying home to San Diego to attend the eighth-grade graduation of his daughter Amanda — the very daughter that was born the day after that ’99 Open — and making it back to Ardmore, Pa., less than three hours before his tee time for the opening round.

It is highly appropriate that the U.S. Open is played on Father’s Day because Mickelson’s pro golf career is intertwined with family.

During his World Golf Hall of Fame induction speech in 2012, Mickelson noted that, unlike most people who remember his feeble victory “leap” at the 2004 Masters, what he remembers is daughter, Sophia, with blond curls bouncing and a binky in her mouth, waving to the TV cameras.

His best memory of the PGA Championship he won in 2005 at Baltusrol with a dramatic birdie on the last hole is of his son, Evan, running around the green during the trophy presentation, high-fiving police officers.

“It’s amazing how golf has become part of our timeline of our family’s development,” Mickelson said in his speech.

“That’s the way I remember those career moments.”

Mickelson’s most crushing moment in golf came at the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, where he took a 1-shot lead to the final hole, made a double-bogey and tied for second. But what he remembers is Amanda telling him later that, “Second is pretty good, Dad. You wanna have some pizza?”

Along with his wife and children, his roots also are precious to Mickelson. He continually praises his parents, sister Tina and brother Tim, who is the coach of the men’s golf team at Phil’s alma mater, Arizona State.

His favorite ball marker is a 1900 silver dollar given to him by his grandfather, Al Santos, who had to leave school in the fourth grade to go to work, earning 35 cents a bag as a caddie on the Monterey Peninsula.

He died a few months before Mickelson won his first major title, and the glaring contrast of their livelihoods isn’t lost on Mickelson, whose annual earnings are estimated at $49 million by Forbes magazine.

“He always felt poor, and there were many days where he wasn’t able to eat,” Mickelson said in a conference call before last year’s AT&T Pebble Beach ProAm. “ ... It’s a great reminder for me.”

After Phil Mickelson had completed his final round of the 2013 British Open, wrapping up the title that few thought he would ever win, he and caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay exchanged a tearful hug on the 18th green in one of the defining moments of his career.

Most of those tears came from Mackay, who admitted later that he “kinda lost it” after witnessing what “Lefty” has described as his best round of golf ever.

When asked why he was so emotional, Lefty’s right-hand man said, “Because the first time I caddied for the guy he didn’t have 10 bucks.”

To those who know the two of them and the closeness of their relationship, there was no surprise in their reaction.

Most great PGA Tour players have had a notable caddie at their side. Jack Nicklaus had Angelo Argea, Gary Player had Alfred “Rabbit” Dyer, Arnold Palmer had Ernest “Creamy” Carolan, Tom Watson had Bruce Edwards, and Tiger Woods had Steve Williams for 13 of his 14 major wins.

Each of those pros, however, had multiple caddies during their careers. To date, Mickelson has had only one. Mackay (pronounced Muh-kie) has been on Mickelson’s bag since he turned pro in 1992, and it’s a partnership that transcends golf.

Mackay’s wife Jennifer was best friends at Arizona State with Mickelson’s wife Amy, and when Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, Mackay drove overnight from Scottsdale to San Diego to lend his support. He also was at the hospital in Houston when Amy underwent surgery.

“Bones has been through this thing with us, and has been as good a friend as you can possibly imagine through this,” Mickelson said after his victory in the 2010 Masters. “I certainly couldn't have a better caddie, either, but also couldn't have a better friend.”

Mackay, who is five years older than Mickelson, was born in England, moved to Florida with his family when he was 8 years old, played small-college golf and became a U.S. citizen in 2000. He got his nickname from Fred Couples at a time when Mackay was rail thin and Couples tried to get his attention but didn’t know his name.

He jumped at the chance to caddie for Mickelson after meeting with Mickelson’s manager, Steve Loy, and it proved to be a fortuitous move. Pros typically pay their caddies 5 to 10 percent of their earnings, plus expenses. Mickelson has won 42 titles and earned $73.3 million on the PGA Tour and is known for his generosity, so it stands to reason that Mackay

has been well compensated.

“It’s always business first, but with Phil, he is so inclusive and friendly and always inviting me to do things together socially,” Mackay said. “That means a lot and speaks to the kind of guy he is.”

An example: On the way to his season debut in Abu Dhabi three weeks ago, Mickelson detoured to Denver to attend the Broncos-Chargers playoff game and took Mackay with him.

Mackay, in turn, has become fiercely loyal. Mickelson likes to tell a story about the time they were in Las Vegas for a tournament and, when a mild earthquake shook Mackay’s room around 2 a.m., he jumped out of bed, grabbed Mickelson’s clubs and headed for the lobby, leaving everything else behind.

He also keeps meticulous notes on every shot of every round at every course, including what the weather was that day.

And there have been plenty of light moments and practical jokes. Such as the time in a Wednesday pro-am when Mickelson cautiously approached an alligator and suddenly jumped on it, grabbing it by the throat and thrashing around on the ground. Mackay, in a panic, came to his aid only to discover that the “beast” was a rubber facsimile Mickelson had spotted in a homeowner’s backyard the day before.

“Phil likes to have fun and keep things loose,” Mackay said. “That’s one of the reasons we have been able to stay together so long and one of the reasons he has been so successful.

“But the big thing about Phil is that he always takes responsibility. Any caddie would stay with him for a long time because he’s not a blamer. He puts the pressure on himself to make the right call.”

A very exciting par 4, this hole can be driven from the tee. Danger lurks around the green with water and sand, and on both sides of the fairway with sand. This hole demands accuracy and finesse, rewarding placement of a long, straight drive. This is a great risk/reward hole with eagle a real possibility.

This is the most-dramatic hole on the course, with a large lake along the left and sand on the right.

Two bunkers give direction for playing the tee shot, which is demanding. This is a demanding finishing hole, rewarding the proper placement of the tee shot and execution of the second shot.
