About the Pima and Maricopa Tribes THE GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY is pleased to announce the opening of its all new Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino in July. This unique and beautiful $135 million project near 51st Avenue and Baseline Road not only elevates the quality of entertainment and hospitality for this growing part of the Valley, but also brings with it more than 300 new permanent and part-time jobs. Initially established by executive order in 1859, the Gila River Indian Community is an alliance between the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee-Posh (Maricopa) Tribes, who formally established a Community constitution in 1939. The Pima and Maricopa people’s history in this part of the stunning Sonoran Desert; however, it goes back much further. The HoHokum, who were ancestors of the Pima, farmed in the region as early as 300 B.C. Much later, around the 1840s (although some say it happened earlier than that), the Maricopa arrived in the vicinity, seeking sanctuary from warring Tribes. The Pima welcomed them, and the two Tribes have lived in unity since. Today, the Pima and Maricopa Tribes have more than 20,000 members and are extremely proud that all three award-winning Gila River Casinos allow the Community to maintain economic sustainability and growth as well as bolster its self-sufficiency, all of which benefit not just Tribal Members, but the greater Phoenix area.

DE VINEDESIGN Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino blends Native American culture with Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired design FOR AMIL PEDRO, a self-taught painter and carver from the Gila River Indian Community, the new Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel is much more than guestrooms and gaming areas constructed of concrete and steel. It’s a piece of art itself, an informally elegant gallery infused with symbolic designs that show affinity for the land, where visitors can enjoy his and others’ handiwork up close and become immersed in the Gila River Indian Community’s rich

Indeed, locally produced art in most every form possible – from paintings, pottery and photography to textiles and sculpture – can be found everywhere within the Frank Lloyd Wright-style walls of Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino.
