Students in every grade level had a chance to explore higher learning opportunities during the first-ever “College Exploration Day” at Coronado High School in November. Freshmen visited the East Valley Institute of Technology; sophomores attended a presentation

by Scottsdale Community College; juniors visited Arizona State University; and seniors filled out college applications, with application fees waived. Students also received assistance applying for scholarships, and at least one Coronado CORONADO LEARNING Don qualified for a scholarship that very day!

En noviembre, los estudiantes de cada nivel de grado de la Escuela Secundaria Coronado tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar, por primera vez, las oportunidades de la educación superior durante el “Día de Exploración Universitaria”. Los estudiantes de noveno grado (freshmen) visitaron el Instituto de Tecnología del Este del Valle, los estudiantes de décimo grado (sophomore) asistieron a una presentación en el Colegio Comunitario de Scottsdale, los estudiantes de undécimo grado (juniors) visitaron la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y los estudiantes de duodécimo grado (seniors) completaron las solicitudes de admisión universitaria, exentos de pagar las cuotas de solicitud, y se les ofreció ayuda para solicitar becas y, por lo menos, ¡un Don de Coronado fue elegible para una beca ese mismo día!

Students at Mohave Middle School participated in a class trip to NAU in October to see university life ‘in action.’ The trip is part of the Habits of Study class offered to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades. It is designed to help children develop the study habits expected of students in high school Advanced Placement (AP) classes. It also gets them thinking early about the education required to make their dreams come true. Thanks to partner Comerica Bank for helping make this trip possible.

“Spirit Day” at Arcadia High School was all about opportunity. Students and their families were invited to the February event to meet with more than 17 colleges and universities. To help get students excited about higher education, Arcadia staffers wore their college shirts to show their own school “spirit.”

Students at Chaparral High School got a glimpse of both future college and career opportunities at an on-campus event in February. Representatives from colleges, universities, businesses and first-responder agencies attended the College and Career Fair to talk one-on-one with students about their future opportunities.

We already know Desert Mountain High School prepares students for higher education through rigorous academics and the International Baccalaureate program. What you may not know is that this preparation begins in our elementary schools. The WIN program at Anasazi Elementary is a perfect example. WIN (What I Need) groups aim to help children master the State Essential Standards necessary in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math that they will need to succeed in more challenging courses as they progress through school.

Students work with teachers to grow in specific areas for a period of weeks, then new WIN groups are formed to focus on different standards.

Learning Never Stops

earning in the Scottsdale Unified School District is for more than students: Teachers and administrators are constantly working on professional development to further improve the exceptional skills they already bring to the classroom.

One example of that professional development took place on the day before Thanksgiving.

El aprendizaje nunca termina El aprendizaje en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Scottsdale no es solamente para los estudiantes, sino también para los maestros y administradores, quienes constantemente participan en sesiones de desarrollo profesional para mejorar aún más sus habilidades excepcionales que ya traen a sus aulas.

Un ejemplo de ese desarrollo profesional se llevó a cabo el día antes del feriado del Día de Acción de Gracias (Thanksgiving). Mientras los estudiantes estaban en sus casas soñando con una cena de pavo, muchos maestros del SUSD pasaron el día antes del feriado trabajando en la colaboración vertical: un proceso que permite que los maestros se comuniquen con otros maestros de diferentes niveles de grado sobre los planes de estudio.

Por ejemplo, un maestro de 5to grado comparte las expectativas para los estudiantes de 5to grado con un maestro de 4to grado y, el maestro de 4to grado comunica lo que sus estudiantes hacen para prepararse para entrar en 5to grado. “It was great to have a chunk of uninterrupted time to work with kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers in the district,” Redfield Elementary School teacher Dana Rhoades said of the November professional development. “Vertical articulation is such a valuable experience to enhance my teaching and better prepare my students for what is to come in the next grade level and beyond!"

Laguna Elementary School teacher Gwen Boor added that it was also useful to meet with colleagues teaching the same grade level at other schools. “I loved the opportunity to meet with other 1st grade teachers in the district! We were able to share ideas and discuss lessons that met the needs of all learners.”

Curriculum alignment is important across all fields of study, not just the core subjects, and that was evident during November’s professional development.

Hopi Elementary School P.E. teacher Tim Marriott also participated in the discussions. “It is always beneficial when special area teachers can meet together, and share new thoughts and ideas about your particular specialty. We always feel more engaged when we are interacting with like-minded people, and it certainly is meaningful when you feel like you’re speaking the same language with your peers.”

The Core Purpose of Scottsdale Unified School District is to ensure all individual learners reach their full potential. That commitment to learning was on display in November, when teachers made it clear that regardless of age or experience, we all need to keep learning.

Then & Now Since the doors of Scottsdale’s first school opened more than 120 years ago and once dirt roads have become wide boulevards, thousands upon thousands of students and their families have learned to read, write and think at Scottsdale Unified School District schools. Many of them have stayed on, sending new generations of students to our classrooms; others have become part of the district in other ways. Here are three such stories:

Y, a partir del 1ro de julio de este año, pueden agregar ‘directora’ a la impresionante lista de contribuciones de Brooke Williams quien continúa creándose una reputación en el SUSD.

And, as of July 1 this year, you can add ‘principal’ to the impressive list of contributions Brooke Williams continues to make in SUSD. Williams attributes her professional path to her childhood next-door neighbor, who doubled as her Hopi 2nd grade teacher. “She made me see that teaching could be more than standing in front of a classroom.” More interested in learning how students think, Williams got her B.A. degree in Child Development and her Master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Special Education.

Williams is excited to carry on the Laguna tradition set by longtime principal Dr. Katie Root, who retires at the end of the school year, but is looking forward to starting her own. “She’s taught me that relationships are key.”

The Crosiers

From Loloma, Hohokam, Navajo and Tonto to Ingleside, Tonalea, Coronado and Scottsdale High schools, the Russell/Crosier family has been a SUSD staple for 40+ years. Grandfather Ralph Russell got things underway in the 1970s as a custodian at Scottsdale High, then Tonto Elementary School, while daughter Jenella attended Navajo and Scottsdale High.

Jenella married fellow Beaver alum Terry Crosier, who first became a custodian at their alma mater, then branched into grounds and maintenance before retiring as grounds maintenance supervisor in the early 2000s. Janella gave up her work as a beautician to join the district in the mid-1980s, working as a custodian, then in the film library, property control and purchasing, before retiring as a buyer in 2012.

But it doesn’t end there: The Crosiers’ son and daughter attended Hohokam, Supai and Coronado. Working at Ingleside during high school and college summer vacations and full-time while pursuing his master’s degrees, Shawn now teaches 8th grade social studies at Tonalea K-8. Sister Shannon is budget manager in SUSD’s Finance Department. “SUSD has been very good to us,” says Shawn.

La familia Crosier Desde Loloma, Hohokam, Navajo y Tonto hasta Ingleside, Tonalea, Coronado y las secundarias de Scottsdale, la familia Russell/Crosier ha sido importante para el SUSD por más de 40 años. El abuelo Ralph Russell puso las cosas en marcha en 1970 como conserje de la Secundaria de Scottsdale, luego en la Escuela Primaria Tonto, mientras que su hija Jenella asistía a Navajo y a la Secundaria de Scottsdale.

Jenella se casó con un compañero exalumno de los Beaver, Terry Crosier, quien fue el primer conserje de su alma mater, luego se ascendió a encargado de terrenos y mantenimiento y antes de jubilarse como supervisor de mantenimiento de terrenos a principios de los años 2000. Janella dejó su trabajo como esteticista para formar parte del Distrito a mediados de los 80 y trabajó como conserje, y luego en la biblioteca de películas, como control de propiedad y compras, y antes de jubilarse como encargada de compras de materiales en el año 2012.

The Ferger Family

The Ferger family tradition in SUSD all started with great grandfather Bill, who worked for many years as a crossing guard at Pima Elementary. Since then, three generations of Fergers have attended SUSD schools, led by grandmother Ranae Ferger-Kauffman, a 1973 Saguaro High School graduate, who serves these days as office manager of the Mohave District Annex. Ranae’s vita also includes positions in kindergarten enrichment programs at Hohokam and Pueblo Elementary schools in the 1980s, afterschool enrichment programs at Pueblo and Mohave in the 1990s, and as the district’s early childhood staffing coordinator from 2007-2014. Brother Rod Cullum (Saguaro ‘74) is the founder of Cullum Homes, a local builder of luxury homes.

Grandfather Lyle Ferger attended Pima and Scottsdale High; his and Ranae’s sons, Myles and Travis, followed in their parents’ Scottsdale footsteps at Hohokam, Pueblo, Mohave, Saguaro and Chaparral. Brother Rod’s children are graduates of “The 3 Cs”: Cherokee, Cocopah and Chaparral. Today, Ferger grandchildren can be found learning in Pima, Mohave and Saguaro classrooms.

“My brother and I often talk about the teachers we had at Saguaro: the English teacher who taught us the Jitterbug, the coaches he still plays golf with,” says Ranae. “Getting ready to see my first grandchild graduate from Saguaro is really exciting!”

Dylan has enjoyed her role this year as education chair of Arcadia’s National Honor Society and bringing local public figures on campus to address the group.

f anyone can find a way to successfully combine theater and politics, no one at Chaparral will be surprised if it is Eric Flayton who finds it. This accomplished veteran of the high school stage sees both endeavors as ways to connect with all kinds of people, and he feels strongly about both. “Theater forces you into others’ lives and to dig deep into human emotion and spirit.”

While Eric claims to have been a middle school rabble-rouser, he says Chaparral made him realize that he could succeed at the things he wanted to do by following the rules and working hard, which was a revelation. The school gave him the space to be himself, and others, through its stellar fine arts program. Eric is waiting to hear whether he has been accepted to George Washington and American University in Washington, D.C. While capSCHOOL ESCUELA taining the school’s CHSazz dance SECUNDARIA company, Carmela Barrera Mena CORONADO has been preparing for her future through Coronado’s award-winning Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates, or JAG, program.

She credits JAG with developing the leadership and public speaking skills that inspired her to create an original dance program in support of the so-called “Dreamers” who are at the heart of the nation’s current immigration debate. “I didn’t believe I could do this, but I’ve learned that no matter how tall or small you are, you always have a voice.”

Carmela will take her dancing skills to Scottsdale Community College in the fall, where she is already practicing with a dance team, then to Arizona State University. If she’s not teaching children how to dance in the future, she says she would like to pursue a career in hospitality or tourism management.

C

alling herself “a huge planner,” Desert Mountain’s Madison Kelly is happy she’s not spending her last quarter of high school worrying about where she’s going to college in August: it’s the University of Arizona.

Those same planning skills were put to use recently when Madison found herself at the heart of working with the school’s administration to plan a campus event to remember the slain Parkland, Florida high school students.

“I saw a positive side to others that I hadn’t seen before, and I was so impressed that those who were there chose to be their best self.” That work has, in turn, led to a high school voter registration project.

Madison played volleyball all four years at Desert Mountain, and dabbled in theater, yearbook and track, all while holding down jobs as a nanny for two families and concentrating on her academics. She believes her future will involve working with children somehow, either as a teacher, child advocacy attorney or social worker.

I

f you’ve seen a theater production or concert at Saguaro sometime during the past four years, chances are Drake Dole had a hand in its lighting design.

Preferring to work behind the spotlights rather than in front of them, Drake is most proud of the school’s production two years ago of Les Misérables and the collaborative process that made it a success, from costumes, to music, to sound, to lighting. “To see the community enjoy what you’ve helped bring together is incredibly rewarding.”

Drake will take all of that experience with him to Arizona State University in the fall, and sees himself eventually ending up in the business side of theater, although he wouldn’t mind being nominated for a Tony Award for lighting design someday.

No Hollywood aspirations for him, though—Drake thrives on the challenge of having to get things right the first time.

Leaving a Legacy, Starting a Tradition

S

omething new is coming to one of the oldest schools in Scottsdale. The Pima Panthers have a storied history, and now they are writing a fresh chapter. Pima Elementary changed its name to Pima Traditional this year, in preparation for a shift in curriculum.

Starting in August, with the 2018-2019 school year, Pima will teach Saxon Math and Spalding English Language. You can read more below about how these methods are defined, but there is much more to a “Traditional” school than its academic model. A Traditional school also creates an environment that is appropriate for structured and sequential learning: Often, classroom desks will all face the front of the room, the number of assemblies will be reduced, and students may wear uniforms.

Pima is working with its community of parents and teachers to create the environment that will best suit their school during this transition. That work is led by Principal Alexis Cruz-Freeman.

The Spalding Method: A Total Language Arts Program

“I am so excited to become a Traditional,” Cruz-Freeman said, “so we can guide and challenge students through a learning environment that gives priority to basic, traditional skills and values.”

Past Pima principal and current SUSD Assistant Superintendent Dr. Steve Nance says Pima will still be Pima.

“The change to being a traditional school will help the faculty and staff focus on those direct instructional practices that help students gain basic skills necessary to be successful learners,” Nance said. “It will not fundamentally change the great things that Pima has been doing for a long time.”

Pima will be the second traditional school in the Scottsdale Unified School District. Cheyenne Traditional School serves the northern part of SUSD; Pima will provide a traditional option in the south.

Dads Help Keep an Eye on Navajo

Four years ago, the leaders of Navajo Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) had some ambitious ideas ALREDEDOR DEL for the school, but no muscle— PLANTEL ESCOLAR literally—to make them happen.

As oft happens, PTOs tend to be the bailiwick of mothers, but these Navajo moms knew they needed help, and started searching for a way to involve dads to benefit the school’s 400+ students.

AROUND CAMPUS

After some research, the PTO found WATCH D.O.G.S.—short for “Dads of Great Students”—a father involvement program of the National Center for Fathering. With the goal of providing positive male role models for students, WATCH D.O.G.S. work on campus for a whole day at a time, demonstrating to students that men believe education is important, not just women. At the same time, these volunteer dads, grandfathers

Como siempre sucede, las PTO tienden a ser un terreno de madres, pero estas mamás de Navajo sabían que necesitaban ayuda y empezaron a buscar una manera de involucrar a los padres en beneficio de esta escuela de casi 400 estudiantes.

Después de investigar un poco, la PTO encontró los WATCH D.O.G.S., acrónimo de “Dads of Great Students” (Padres de

Este curso escolar, los WATCH D.O.G.S. ya han invertido 35 días completos de clases en Navajo, seguidos de todos los 40 días del año pasado y además los 25 a 30 de su primer año. “Solamente díganme dónde, cuándo 22

y qué quieren que haga y allí estaré”, así fue como Thorne describió la forma en que la mayoría de los padres quieren involucrarse en las escuelas de sus hijos. “¡Por favor no me obliguen a sentarme en una reunión!”, dijo riéndose entre dientes.

Los WATCH D.O.G.S. apoyan a los maestros en la clase, supervisan a los estudiantes cuando los dejan y los recogen y colaboran cuando hace falta. También tienen a su cargo el proyecto anual de STEAM (ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería, arte y música) en el que han logrado que los estudiantes de 5to grado construyan instrumentos musicales usando cajas de cigarros. Ellos también cuidan el hogar al aire libre de Tortilla, la tortuga del desierto de la escuela.

El director Matt Patzlaff dice que los WATCH D.O.G.S. “ayudan a mejorar el sentir de la estupenda comunidad que tenemos en Navajo”.

“Fue muy difícil por muchos años conseguir ayuda”, expresa la co-presidenta de la PTO Shanda Carrithers. “Estoy muy complacida e impresionada con los WATCH D.O.G.S”.

and uncles provide the school with an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security.

The PTO recruited Navajo dad Greg Thorne to get—and keep—the ball rolling, and it is. Already this school year, WATCH D.O.G.S. have spent 35 complete school days at Navajo, following 40 all of last year and 25-30 their first year.

“Just tell me when, where and what you want me to do, and I’ll be there” is how Thorne’s describes the way fathers like to be involved in their children’s schools. “Please don’t make me sit in a meeting!” he chuckles.

The WATCH D.O.G.S. support teachers in the classroom, monitor student drop-off and pick-up, and pitch in wherever they’re needed. They sponsor an annual STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and music) project that has 5th graders building musical instruments from cigar boxes.

They also maintain the outdoor home of Tortilla, the school’s desert tortoise.

Principal Matt Patzlaff says the WATCH D.O.G.S. “help enhance the awesome community feeling we have at Navajo.”
