Breast clinic brings peace of mind Early breast cancer diagnosis leads to treatment success, lifestyle changes

t 75, Charlene Gouvenier is still at her high school weight. She walks regularly, dances, swims and can play a mean game of golf.

But in May 2010, a mammogram revealed a tumor with irregular edges.

After two needle-core biopsies by a different health provider, which are required to see if the tumor is cancerous, failed, she became frustrated.

“No one in my family had breast cancer.

I had been conscientious about health my whole life. … I was just going to ride the rails and see how it worked out,” she said.

Gouvenier adopted an antioxidant-rich diet with no red meat and minimal sugar for the next four years. But while she felt `ine, the thought of cancer kept creeping into her mind.

“The tumor was still there. I could feel it all the time. It was wearing on my brain,” she said.

So Gouvenier paid a visit to the Undiagnosed Breast Clinic at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert in February 2014. Stage-1 breast cancer was the diagnosis; but a successful surgery by MD Anderson’s Dr. Julie Billar and radiation treatment brought swift positive results. Gouvenier is back to her daily routine and feeling better than ever.

“I can’t say enough about the caring people there,” she said of her experience.

ach Singh and his mother, r, Jackie Singh, will join an expected ted 18,000 people either running, nning, walking or sleeping-in on n Oct. 12 for this year’s 22nd Annual ual Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure®. For the Singh family, the Komen Phoenix Racee for the Cure is cause for celebration.

Singh’s mother was diagnosed with Stage tage 2 breast cancer when he was a junior at Mountain Pointe High School. At a time when most kids were focused on fun, Singh was facing some real fears. “It was debinitely ya shocking thing, we never thought it would uld happen to us,” said Singh.

Thankfully, his mother’s treatment was successful. Jackie has been cancer-freee for six years. The experience changed Zach’s ch’s life forever.

The Northern Arizona University graduate joined the Susan G. Komen® Central and Northern Arizona (Komen n CAN AZ) team two years ago as the Race Intern, and now, as Race Manager, er, he continues to do his part to help bight ht breast cancer. Komen CAN AZ hopes to raise $1.2 million from this year’s event, which is billed with exciting changes. We talked to Singh about his family’s experience with breast cancer and this year’s Race.

What did you do when you discovered your mother had breast cancer?

She was diagnosed when I was in high school. I decided to graduate a year early.

I was able to stay home and help her with treatment.

You’ve been involved with the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure for two years, why is it so important to take part in the Race?

There is an indescribable feeling that people experience when they participate in the Race. It is both a time of celebration and a time of remembrance. There is also a sense of coming together with others to bight this disease and bind the cures. The Race is the

signature fund-raiser for Komen CAN AZ, raising money for breast cancer education, screening and treatment services and research.

What makes this year’s event special?

There are a lot of new changes this year.

We are at a new location in downtown Phoenix at Cesar Chavez Plaza, 201 W. Washington St. This site provides easy light rail access, more parking locations and more activities in the area for our participants to experience.

We are also offering competitive timing for all the Race Day events so if someone registers for an ofbicial time we can provide that. Something else we are excited about this year is “Memories for a Lifetime,” the memorial wall. It will be a gathering place for survivors and families and friends of those who lost their battle with breast cancer to share their inspirational stories and memories related to breast cancer.

Everyone has a story. We hope people will come and share theirs.

It dedicates 100 percent of funds raised through the annual Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® to this promise, with 75 percent staying in the community supporting multiple mission impact initiatives and 25 percent going directly towards international research.

“This year’s theme, ‘Embrace the Movement,’ is a call for everyone to help save lives and end breast cancer forever. Unfortunately, most of us know someone affected by breast cancer. Now is the time to embrace the movement here in central and northern Arizona,” says Heather Roberts, Executive Director for Komen CAN AZ. By participating in the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure, you save lives, making a real impact on programs and services in central and northern Arizona, including: • The Community Grants program, which has awarded over $19.5 million to support local breast health and breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs, and over $5.9 million to international, award winning research grants since Komen CAN AZ’s inception.

• Advocacy at the state level for policy and funding changes to ensure underinsured and uninsured women and men have access to care. This includes the restoration of Arizona’s Medicaid, the expansion of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program (BCCTP) and most recently, the Fair Access to Cancer Treatment Act or FACT Act, which makes oral chemotherapy treatment more affordable and accessible.

• Community empowerment through breast self-awareness education at community events, for individual businesses and via partnerships like Buddy Check 12.

• Survivor support through programs like Komen CAN AZ’s annual Survivor Education and Empowerment Conference.

• Collaboration among and connections to local resources, including everything from breast cancer support groups to provider programs.

Set a goal and spread the word to keep yourself accountable.

Offer to do something outrageous if you make your goal. Dye your hair pink, kiss a pig – the sky’s the limit!

Share the link to your personalized Race fundraising page via email and social media sites.

Host a garage sale, asking family, friends and neighbors to contribute unwanted items.

Solicit unwanted gift cards, which you can exchange for cash on a variety of websites.

Give up your daily latte for the week and put the savings toward your fundraising efforts.

Search the car, couch cushions and junk drawer for loose change. (This a great way for kids to contribute, as well.)

Get back to basics with a traditional lemonade stand, bake sale or car wash.

Ask a local business to sponsor an event in which they donate a portion of the proceeds to your fundraising efforts.

hen a mammogram revealed cancer in October of 2005, Gail Horton became the Wifth person in her family to face a breast cancer battle. But Horton had faith she would overcome the setback. A successful double mastectomy and chemotherapy treatment would put her among the ranks of cancer survivors.

Horton can proudly say she has been cancer-free since 2006. n There are plenty of blessings to count in that story alone, she’ll admit, but Horton also faced a new journey as a breast cancer survivor. She had opted not to have reconstructive surgery at the time of treatment, and the years of living with cumbersome prosthetics took a toll on her emotionally.

“It was a nightmare. I wouldn’t go swimming unless I was with people I knew. I would go on church retreats and make sure I roomed with a lady who was aware of the situation. … It’s not that life was horrible, but you’re very different.

It makes you feel like you just can’t be normal,” Horton said.

All of that changed in 2012 when she met with a breast oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert.

He informed her that, even after all these years, reconstruction was still an option and referred Horton to surgeon, Dr. Randy Craft.

In April 2013, Horton underwent her Wirst reconstruction procedure, a TRAM Flap, which relocates skin, muscles and blood vessels from the abdomen.

She had complications, enduring three surgeries over the course of a month, but

appreciated Craft’s constant reassurance and steady hand.

“He played a huge part in this, not only with his skill, but as a support person too,” she said.

The second phase of the reconstruction was completed in January of this year.

And now Horton can honestly say, she is a completely new person.

“I feel like I’m whole again and that I’ve kind of transitioned from being a survivor … to actually feeling like I’m living again. It’s almost easy to forget I had cancer once upon a time,” she said.

With regained conWidence, Horton, now 49, has enjoyed a more active lifestyle as well.

“I’m walking, doing water aerobics, bike riding, hiking, eating better,” she added. “Before, I was existing. I was alive but I didn’t feel alive. … This has deWinitely been so worth it. It’s a hard thing to go through physically and emotionally but once it’s done it just opens life back up for you. … I’m so grateful to have had this experience.”
