W

hat makes an employee “excellent?” Regardless of the job or industry, most employers use adjectives such as creative, customer-focused, collaborative, action oriented, smart, hardworking, upbeat, honest, and detail oriented to describe “model” employees.

Sun Health’s annual Employee Service Awards spotlight employees who exemplify these traits and apply them in one or more key areas of focus: • • • •

Our 2015 award winners were chosen from dozens of candidates nominated by co-workers in one or more of the categories. A panel of Sun Health leaders narrowed the list to three finalists in each category and a judge from LeadingAge Arizona determined the winners.

All nominees and finalists were honored at a sit-down dinner at The Colonnade. “It’s a wonderful reception and sitdown dinner where we recognize the nominees, the finalists and the award recipient,” said Chief Marketing Officer Ron Austerlade, who served as master of ceremonies.

“It was a special night for everyone.”

This year’s Special Awards ceremony also recognized Sun Health employees for their years of service, beginning at two years and moving up to five, 10, 15, 20 and higher. Diane Barnum, a Care Transitions nurse, was recognized for her impressive 35 years of service.

I hope to one day be a sous chef and own my own restaurant.”

un Health is a great place to work, but don’t take the company’s word for it – ask an employee.

For the past several years, employees have given Sun Health high marks on satisfaction surveys conducted by an impartial, third-party firm. Sharon Grambow, executive vice president and COO of Sun Health Senior Living, says the first such survey in 2011 yielded pleasantly surprising results.

“We had the highest employee-engagement score of all the survey company’s core customers in the nation,” Grambow says. “The average ‘highlyengaged’ percentage of employees is about 32 percent, but ours was over 50 percent ‘highly engaged.’ We received an award from the survey company and even received recognition in The Washington Post and The New York Times.”

Sun Health repeated the survey in 2013 and received that year’s second-highest engagement score: 49 percent. A 2015 survey by the same firm started in November. Prior to 2011, Sun Health performed internal satisfaction surveys, but Grambow says there was a desire by Sun Health leaders to get a more objective read and compare Sun Health against other high-performing organizations in a number of industries nationwide.

The process has been invaluable in learning more about what Sun Health employees want from their employer, such as direct feedback and information, recognition from supervisors and better communication. Sun Health’s leaders are addressing these requests, Grambow said, and the result is a winwin for employees, and all Sun Health constituents.

“The relationship between our residents, donors and members, and our employees is so important, and in particular, we believe resident satisfaction is directly tied to employee satisfaction,” she says. “If we have highly engaged employees who know their most important role is taking care of our residents, then our resident satisfaction will also be high. It’s all positively related.”

The Difference You Make program also included special recognition of longtime donors. Guziak and the Foundation team presented Spirit of Sun Health Awards to more than 30 donors who have given to Sun Health Foundation for 20 or more years.

Guziak promised to share more stories, like those featured in the program, so that it will be easier for donors to see the fruits of their gifts. eaving a bequest in a will or trust is a simple way to make a charitable gift that can have a huge impact.

By leaving something behind in your estate plan, you make sure that you and your family leave a legacy that benefits the charitable organization(s) that were important to you during your lifetime.

A charitable bequest is simply a distribution from your estate to a charitable organization through your last will and testament, or a trust. There are different kinds of bequests and, for each one, you must use specific language to indicate the direction of your assets.

Everyone has an estate, even if it is modest. Your estate is the sum of all of your assets, including any property you own, insurance policies, retirement accounts, cash on hand, or more.

And, when it comes to philanthropy, no gift is too small.

Below are some of the most common types of bequests.

It is best to get the specific wording from the charitable organization itself, and then to have an attorney draft the provisions. Be sure that you properly identify the charity and the area that you want to benefit.

asked two of our Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing experts — Rhonda Zonoozi, exercise physiologist and certified health coach, and Registered Dietitian Margaret Brown — to offer advice for successful weight-loss or weight-maintenance in 2016. Here’s what they had to say: Q: Besides the obvious — eating more calories than you burn — what are some other factors that can cause weight gain?

BROWN: Chronic illnesses can lead to weight gain, as can physical limitations such as orthopedic injuries or the inactivity.

Depression, chronic stress and hormonal changes in women can also lead to an unhealthy weight. When you live with anxiety, stress or grief, your body may produce chemicals that make your body more likely to store fat, especially around the waist. This type of weight gain in the belly can pose more serious health threats.

Q: Can medications affect weight gain?

BROWN: Unfortunately, some medications can make you feel more hungry, while others slow your body’s ability to burn calories or cause you to retain extra fluids. Atop the list of medicines that may expand your waistline are depression medicines. Also, keep in mind that depression itself can affect appetite and sleeping habits. Certain diabetes medicines as well as corticosteroids such as prednisone can also promote weight gain.

Discuss these issues with your health care provider.

Q: What is BMI and is it a true indicator of health, or of a healthy weight?

ZONOOZI: Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that uses a weight-to-height formula to answers questions, “Are you at a healthy weight for someone of your height?” Although research has shown that individuals with a higher BMI are more likely to experience weight-related health problems, BMI does not directly measure bodyfat percentage and does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle or bone mass. It also does not measure distribution of excess fat that could be determined with a waist circumference measurement. BMI should be used as part of an initial screening, not as a diagnostic measurement.

Q: How much stress should you put on yourself to reach or maintain a healthy weight?

BROWN: Maintaining a healthy weight should not be stressful, however it takes ongoing discipline and commitment to manage your weight through nutrition, exercise and behavior modification. It is a good idea to know not just your weight, but also to understand your various lab values such as cholesterol, blood sugar and more. Having an accountability partner, or coach, has proven to be very effective in maintaining a healthy weight.

Log your food intake daily. Try MyFitnessPal, which is available online and also as an app, to track your outcomes. Or, you can track your food intake, including fat grams and calorie counts, in a notebook. To be most effective, you should know your daily calorie and fat gram “budget.”

This month’s recipe is suggested by Sun Health Registered Dietitian Tracy Garrett, prepared by Executive Chef Curtis Anderson, Sun Health Grandview Terrace.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Toss asparagus in olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Place on prepared baking sheet in a single layer and roast for 10-15 minutes until asparagus begins to take on color and is done to your liking.

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine spinach, tomatoes, red onion and basil. Add dressing and toss to coat.

Divide tossed salad onto desired number of plates and top with roasted asparagus and avocado, cut to your preference.

Prep time: 15 mins.

Cook time: 10-15 mins.
