Valley students learn about finances, non-profits during summer internships SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC

School may have been out, but the learning didn’t stop for five Arizona high school students this summer. The lessons won’t show up as final grades, but they will take shape on their resumes and in their lives. The five students, four from the East Valley and one from Phoenix selected as student leaders as part of a nationwide program by Bank of America, worked full-time as paid interns for Boys and Girls Clubs in the Valley, took a financialeducation course and joined more than 200 other student leaders at a Washington, D.C., leadership summit, meeting with congressional leaders and participating in a service learning project. “It’s been very busy, very tiring and very fulfilling,” said Coleen Barcena of Mesa, a recent Westwood High School graduate who interned at the Boys & Girls Club’s Superstition Mountain Branch in Apache Junction. “The internship taught me about managing a nonprofit. I worked at the front desk, learned about the financial side of the non-profit and got to work hands-on with the kids.” Aimee Cheng, also from Mesa, interned at the Boys & Girls Club’s Grant Woods Branch. She plans to apply what she learned through the financial-education component to start a finance and economics club at Tempe Preparatory Academy. “I learned about budgeting and credit and understanding that having the right resources can improve your financial literacy. It helped me understand credit and how credit scores work,” Cheng said. For Brandon Pasternak, a senior at Pinnacle High School after he completes his internship at the Vestar Branch in Phoenix, the experience in Washington “made me realize I should be more active in the community,” he said. “The highlight of the trip to D.C. was going to Capitol Hill, seeing where everything happens and meeting with those who make it happen. I realized that you can stand up for what you believe and that I can use my voice to make a difference.” The Student Leaders program “offers young people who are engaged community citizens an opportunity to build their workforce and leadership skills,” said

Benito Almanza, Bank of America Arizona market president. “We’re building pathways to success through meaningful and relevant work experiences and financial literacy to advance economic mobility in the community.” Cheng said the overall experience helped cement her plans for a career in the financial sector, but she was deeply affected “by meeting all these accomplished and successful people from all over the country, hearing their stories and joining together on issues we’re passionate about, like non-profits and making the world a better place.” The other two Valley-based Student Leaders were Brianna Rangel of Queen Creek, also a Westwood High School graduate, who interned at the Queen Creek Boys & Girls Club, and Trey Leveque of Gilbert, who graduated from Williams Field High School and interned at the Gilbert Boys & Girls Club.

Big League Dreams to Gilbert: There are no safety concerns JESSICA BOEHM THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM

In front of about 30 Little Leaguers, their parents and coaches, Big League Dreams staff and supporters announced Monday that Gilbert had no reason to shut down their facility earlier this month. The town unexpectedly closed the eight-field ballpark, citing dangerous safety issues with the grandstands. According to the town, the park will remain closed for 12 to 18 months to complete $11.6 million in repairs. Big League Dreams Gilbert, which operates the town-owned facility, said it had no warning the park would shutter until the day the town announced it to the public. The company is a subsidiary of a California-based company that operates 11 similar parks across the country. The Big League Dreams owners called the town’s public safety concerns into question at a media event Monday. They said the company is asking the town to reconsider its complete closure of the park so they can continue serving youth in the community.

Public safety or ‘hidden agenda’? During a recent town inspection, a consultant found major deficiencies with the ballpark’s grandstands. The consultant said the conditions were “dangerous” and required repair or removal, according to documents obtained by The Arizona Republic through a public-records request. The town got a second opinion from another engineer who confirmed the concerns, the town’s attorney, Robert Grasso, said in a statement. The grandstands at the ballpark are decoration. No one sits on them or is allowed underneath them. They consist of plywood fastened to the ground with metal and plastered with a giant decal to imitate the look and feel of a majorleague ballpark, according to Big League Dreams co-owner Jeff Odekirk. Odekirk said the town is concerned that a mighty gust of wind could send the wall toppling down onto a player going deep into the outfield to make a catch. He said he couldn’t imagine that actually occurring. “I would allow my son to sleep under the stadium (wall) for a year, and I wouldn’t blink,” he said. Odekirk said that if he weeres allowed to bring in his own engineer, he expected they would find that the walls were “per-

fectly safe.” United States Specialty Sports Association’s special projects director, Doug Stark, who holds tournaments and events at the park, also disagreed with the town’s decision. “Now, I’m all for safety, but I can honestly tell you that since the park opened in 2008, rarely have I been concerned about a fence blowing down on top of someone,” Stark said. He questioned if the town had a “hidden agenda” behind closing down Big League Dreams. “Maybe they’re wrapping themselves in the buzz phrase ‘public safety’ as a way to shield themselves when maybe there’s a different endgame,” Stark said. The town did not directly respond to Stark’s accusation, but Grasso said in the statement, “The town regrets any inconvenience that this may cause park users, however the safety of town residents and visitors is the town’s main priority.”

Was Big League blindsided? According to court documents, Jacob Ellis, Gilbert assistant to the town manager, and Parks and Recreation Director Rod Buchanan told Big League Dreams Regional Manager Ed Farmer that the town was closing the park effective immediately at 9 a.m. on July 7. Employees had just a few hours to collect belongings and store equipment before the town locked the grounds. The closure announcement came just hours before a youth fast-pitch state tournament was set to begin at the park, Stark said. “That’s catastrophic,” he said. See SAFETY, Page 6

Deconstruction of Tent City began in May, with approximately 400 inmates transferred to Estrella and Durango jails. A month ago, 350 inmates remained. Winkle pleaded guilty to one count of extreme DUI last week. He was stopped by Tempe police officers in early May after they said they saw him nearly hit three pedestrians. His blood-alcohol content was 0.22 percent. Winkle spent six days in jail and will serve 49 days of home detention. During

Safety

Store Hours: Mon - Fri. 10am - 6 pm Sunday 12pm - 5pm

Big League Dreams staff said they had no idea the closure was coming. But Gilbert notified the company in May about the safety issues and asked it to remedy them, Grasso said. When it did not, the town was forced to “take immediate action to protect the public” due to monsoon season. Grasso also said the town had warned Big League Dreams for more than a year that it planned to close the park for repairs later this year. But according to court documents, that closure was slated for September, not July. Farmer choked back tears during Monday’s event explaining the closure. “This is affecting me and it’s affecting my family and it hurts. It’s affecting 87 employees that we have that I can’t tell whether or not they’re going to be able to make their car payment, feed their kids, make their house payment. I don’t have any information because all of a sudden, the town of Gilbert came in, closed the park and threw us out,” Farmer said. Big League Dreams co-owner John

Giambi said the company held a meeting with the town Monday morning, asking it to open a portion of the park during construction. He suggested the town close two fields at a time so games and tournaments could continue. “It will be an inconvenience for both of us. It will be an inconvenience for the town, it will be an inconvenience for us,” he said. “But the important part is that we’ll be able to do what we do, which is serve the community.” The company also offered to put an additional fence around the grandstands to make sure no one got close to any potential danger. Giambi said Big League Dreams hopes to bring in its own engineer in the next week to further drive its point about the lack of safety concerns. But the town seems unwilling to consider a partial closure. In his statement after the press conference, Grasso said, “The town has considered other options, including a partial closure to conduct repairs in phases. Unfortunately, the phased approach is prohibitively expensive and still presents an unacceptable safety risk to the public.” In the meantime, the future of tournaments and games planned for the park is up in the air.

DPS said the semitruck was heading south on SR 87 when it failed to stop at a red light and struck another vehicle heading north from Shea Boulevard. The semitruck went into the median and pushed the other vehicle in front of it. Both vehicles hit another two vehicles and the semitruck rolled over, spilling the lumber that struck another vehicle. AZ Real Estate COOL HOME

Yaple Park house offers minimalist retreat LISA NICITA SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM

On paper, it might seem like a disconnect for a world-traveling minimalist like Jess Yescalis to live in a home that was built in the ’80s, an era known for excess. Departing from its decade of origin, less is definitely more in the Yescalis home, a unique two-bedroom house tucked in the historic Yaple Park neighborhood near the Melrose District in Phoenix. “I knew immediately it was the space I was looking for. I just knew,” Yescalis said of the moment he discovered the home, online, while visiting Africa. “It was a big deal for me to have a house. It had to be architecturally interesting, and that’s kind of a hard thing to find.” Yescalis, a Republican political consultant, purchased the home in 2013 without ever visiting the property. The home’s exterior, a curvaceous shell of vertical redwood planks, is eye-catching and novel, and its interior layout matches that intriguing preview.

Square footage mystery It’s tough to nail down the square footage of the home, which was renovated with the help of the Ranch Mine, a Phoenix-based architectural firm. What was once a third bedroom is now a threewalled, outdoor entertainment cove that

The front of the s home is only partially visible from the street and driveway, obscured by a block wall.

serves as a transitional space between the home’s family room and its master suite. Depending on the definition of “outdoor,” the home’s footprint ranges from 1,800 square feet to 2,500 square feet. Not included in that measurement is the home’s elevated deck, a dainty perch separated from the main outdoor space by a flight of stairs that offers a lazy

hideaway with a top-down view of the property. “Everything about this house is complicated,” Yescalis said of the two-year renovation, recalling the herculean task of restoring the redwood planks and the time it took to outfit the home with meaningful art and furniture. “Every piece of furniture has a story,” he said.

The home’s front, block-wall enclosed courtyard is softened by greenery, anchored by an eight-person dining table and finished with a blown glass installation created by Dale Chihuly apprentice Ryan Blythe. The 43 fixtures, which illuminate at night, mirror the shape of teardrops seemingly reaching for the sky. Yescalis has plans to add 38 more of the fixtures to the property in the coming months. Once inside, the bare-bones kitchen tells the story of the extensive traveling Yescalis does, while his office, which See MINIMALIST , Page 14

A gallery of black-and-white photos hanging on the wall behind his desk exclusively features political dignitaries, serving as a photographic resume of sorts for Yescalis, who hosted an event at his home for Sen. Marco Rubio during his presidential campaign. “I travel so much that when I came home, I wanted a retreat,” Yescalis said, noting that he lives out of a suitcase more often than not. “It’s a really minimalist vibe.”

Converted from a series of smaller bedrooms during the remodel, the master bedroom is removed from the main living area, making it feel like an escape. HISTORY SPOTLIGHT

How did early Arizonans possibly bear this heat? JAY MARK SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM

Oh, the cruel irony. Why is it that after more than two weeks of 110-degree days, our prayers for lower temps are conditionally granted with a big trade-off — oppressive humidity? That leaves us wondering: Which is worse? Sticking your head in a bone-dry furnace or suffering in a steaming sauna? It just doesn’t seem fair. At least we can find relief in our airconditioned buildings and automobiles and plunges in backyard pools.

Apparently our ancestors didn’t ‘mind the weather’ Ever wonder how our ancestors coped? By all accounts, they suffered just as we do. Back in 1907, the big news was the blistering heat. Just two days before Fourth of July festivities, H.Y. Ryder’s lumber yard thermometer recorded an unbelievable reading of 124 degrees, topping 1990’s “official” 122 degrees. But, as they prepared for the holiday, residents took it in good stride. An Arizo-

na Republican reporter casually observed, “Regardless of the heat, though, Tempe presented a lively aspect all day. … No one seems to particularly mind the weather.” The next day, Mr. Ryder’s thermometer inched up another degree, but there was debate about its accuracy. “Comparison with a thoroughly accurate thermometer proves that Ryder’s instrument is three degrees off. So, it was not really that hot,” the reporter said. But, “It was reasonably warm.”

Two years later on Aug. 21, following a substantial rise in humidity, residents were not so forgiving. “Yesterday was the first really oppressive hot day since July 17,” a reporter said, noting that just four days earlier, people in Tempe endured a 110-degree afternoon. Even though the temperature only reached 102 degrees, “the humidity was excessive,” reaching a sweltering 86 percent. “Linen collars — there are a few people in Phoenix who still wear them — melted like icebergs in the Gulf stream.” Complaints then were much the same as today. “Those who were compelled to walk about in the sun mopped their damp brows and sighed because they could shed no more of their clothes without coming in contact with the police authorities,” a reporter said.

We should probably, definitely stop complaining Nighttime offered no respite. People would dampen their sheets and hope for a hint of wind that could

Humidity pretty much made things unbearable

cool them down, but “sleep was impossible in many … homes … due to a lack of breeze. It was hardly sufficient to flicker a lighted candle,” a writer bemoaned. Even though it raised the humidity, rain provided the greatest respite. The term “monsoon” had not yet entered the vocabulary. That wouldn’t come until 1955. The colorfully expressive word “haboob,” which describes towering dust walls that precede a thunderstorm, also wasn’t a figure of speech in 1909. Local meteorologist Robert Graham introduced the word in a 1971 scientific paper. Demonstrative of our Valley’s heat-island effect and global warming, temperatures exceeded 100 degrees only seven times in 1909 through the third week of August. Compare that with 23 100-degreesplus days in August 2016 — three of which exceeded 110 degrees. So with more imaginative terminology and artificial creature comforts, we should agree we have much less reason to complain today. Reach historian Jay Mark at jaymark@twtdbooks.com

Police release footage of Lot has a lot newborn found in cart PET OF THE WEEK

BRIEANNA J FRANK THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM

Tempe police have released body-camera footage from the evening of June 4, when a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a backpack in a grocery cart outside a Food City store. One of the two videos shows an officer walking into the store and finding the baby, who was being treated by fire crews and can be heard crying in the video. A manager tells the officer he brought the baby inside the store at 1338 E. Apache Blvd. after a man came into the store and told him that an abandoned newborn was in a cart outside. The manager tells the officer he initially thought the man said a newborn was alone in a car but that he realized what happened when he walked outside with the man and heard cries coming from the backpack in the grocery cart. The manager tells police the man who reported the abandoned baby left after showing him where the child was.

of fun and love

In a second body-camera video, an officer asks the manager whether he thought the man might have been the one who left the baby in the cart, and the manager says he did not suspect the man because he didn’t have the same skin tone as the newborn. He tells the officer that he didn’t ask for the man’s name or contact information and that he couldn’t recall what the man’s face looked like. “I didn’t really pay attention. My focus was on the newborn baby,” the manager tells the officer. The newborn’s umbilical cord was still attached when she was found, according to audio from the manager’s 911 call. Another woman interviewed by officers told them in Spanish that she had passed by the backpack in the shopping cart when she entered the grocery store but assumed it had been left there by a homeless person. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital shortly after being evaluated at the scene and was in good health, police said.

Do you have a lot of energy? Do you have a lot of yard? Better yet, do you have a lot of love? Well, if you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, then Lot is the dog for you! Lot lives in the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control’s East Shelter, and as the name implies, he has a lot to give someone. This energetic 2-year-old American Pitbull Terrier loves playtime, and when you add water to the mix, you better watch out, because the excitement is explosive. Lot seems to love to play with others as well, but he wouldn’t mind being the only love bug in your home. Lot would do really well with a lot of space to run around and would be a lot of fun for an active runner or a nice game of tag. This sweet guy is ready to be your furry pal. If you’re ready to give a lot of love to Lot come check him out at our East Shelter, 2630 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Me-
