Easing the transition to senior living Valley firm helps find housing for elders in need of assistance GEORGANN YARA SPECIAL FOR THE ABG

She had built and run an all-things website for some of the biggest venues on the Vegas Strip — Bellagio, Treasure Island and Caesar’s Palace, to name a few — and was lured to the desert from her native Los Angeles by hotelier Steve Wynn to work for him. But today, PK Fields harnesses that experience gained in the fast-paced and frenetic hospitality industry of Sin City into ElderSense, an online directory and marketing tool that connects assistedliving and residential-care facilities to seniors who need them. It works like a hotel search engine and allows case managers, social workers and individuals to search facilities by location, price and real-time availability. They also see photos and can connect directly with the community. “It’s similar to a hotel. You just stay a lot longer,” said Fields, who launched her Scottsdale company in 2015. The two worlds seem to have little in common. But Fields was able to find a connection between them in a venture that she hopes will save others the frustration she endured when her father needed help. During her career, Fields’ LA-based father fell ill twice, once while she was living in Las Vegas and again while she was in New York City. She was surprised at how difficult it was to do a suitable search for a care facility, even online. She left her job with a national hotel chain in New York and returned to Los Angeles to assist him. Fields’ father, Hollywood agent Freddie Fields, who worked with Judy Garland, Steve McQueen and Woody Allen, ended up returning home before his death in 2007. Her mother, Emmy Award-winning actress Polly Bergen, left an assisted-living facility and died at her home in 2014. Fields shared her frustrations searching for an appropriate residence for her ailing father with friends. She learned she was not alone. They didn’t want to tour every facility, they just wanted to see what was out there first. “There was no place to look by price or other filters. Or, you could look but not ask about pets, whether you would have

a private room and bathroom, whether there’s a putting green or parking for your car,” Fields said. “There was no Hotels.com for assisted living.” Fields knew about building websites, was savvy about marketing and knowledgeable about the hospitality industry. She poured that into ElderSense. She moved to the Valley to run the business. Fields’ research informed her that there is a higher concentration of care facilities and communities in Arizona than in her home state. She said there are about 2,000 assisted-living communities here, spanning the traditional large housing communities in resort settings to smaller residences owned by individuals called residential care facilities. “People are looking to create different products in the marketplace, and everything has an app. But at the end of the

day, no one took into consideration that there are all these homes in Arizona and most don’t have a website. So how do you find them?” Fields said. There is a need for this service. Around 1 million Americans live in some kind of senior-living community, with

this number projected to double by 2030, according to American Senior Communities. ElderSense’s database currently includes 123 communities and homes, Fields said. She has expanded to an operation in Colorado and is partnering with health-care organizations like Banner Health. Searchers do not pay a fee. Revenue is generated through the ads placed by facilities. Fields receives no extra money for placements made through ElderSense. Fields and her team personally visit each facility that wants to be on the site, she said. In addition to the vetting, they must be licensed and the property must meet Fields’ standards. Among those is Anderson Assisted Living in Mesa. Owner Jennifer Anderson turned her home into a residentialcare facility that specializes in women with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. A friend in the business recommended ElderSense two months ago, as Anderson had just opened and sought clients. Two weeks after calling Fields and getting on the site, Anderson got her first resident, who came through a Banner Health referral. In addition to the ease of getting on the site, Anderson likes Fields’ connections with local health-care providers and the $75 a month cost — a fraction of the typical referral service fees. “It’s very reasonable and I like she’s connected with Banner. It opens things up quite a bit,” said Anderson, who is about to earn her RN degree from the University of Arizona. There’s also the woman who got Fields’ information from her ailing mother’s case manager. She was overwhelmed at finding a good place for her. Fields made it happen. “She said, ‘I don’t know what we would do without your service,’ ” Fields said. “Hearing things like this validated the last few years my life.”

A Scottsdale physician who died in a Montana kayaking accident is remembered by former co-workers as a caring doctor who befriended and helped hundreds of people during his lifetime. The body of Thomas Michael Bajo, who would have turned 68 on Wednesday, was found submerged in the waters of Rock Creek in Montana on Tuesday after his kayak hit a rock in the river and overturned on Monday afternoon, according to Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan. The person who had been kayaking with Bajo and called police said he last saw an unresponsive Bajo floating downstream, McQuillan said. Several agencies responded and began a search that was suspended at sundown and resumed Tuesday morning before Bajo’s body was recovered at 7:15 a.m., McQuillan said. Bajo was wearing a helmet, dry suit and life jacket at the time and had more than 20 years of kayaking experience, McQuillan said. He had retired from his job as a critical-care physician for Banner Health in Phoenix in 2015 after working there for 30 years, Banner officials said. “Dr. Bajo cared for our most seriously ill patients, as well as giving his time to educate new physicians in training,” Banner Health spokesman David Lozano said in a prepared statement. “Our physician residents tell us that he played a pivotal role in their medical careers and was instrumental in helping them become the physicians they are today.”

One of those physicians was Dr. Robert Raschke, a critical-care doctor at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, who said Bajo trained him in the mid-1980s when he started at the facility as a medical student. Raschke said he became friends with Bajo and that the two often went mountain biking or kayaking together. “He cared more about his patients and

their families than anybody,” Raschke said. “Everyone was shocked when he would be on vacation somewhere at 3 o’ clock in the morning and call in to check on a patient.” Thomas Raschke said that it Michael Bajo wasn’t unusual for Bajo to be consoling a family who had lost a loved one even hours after his shift had ended. “He gave us all a vision of commitment and caring that no one had ever really seen before,” Raschke said.

‘So much room in his heart’ Lindsey Medeiros, an intensive-care nurse who started working with Bajo in 2009, said he would call her every day to check on her after she took another job. Medeiros said she hadn’t known that Bajo did similar things for hundreds of other people during his lifetime. “It’s only now in postmortem that I’m finding out this man carved out a little piece of his heart for all those people,” Medeiros said. “He legitimately had so much room in his heart for all these people. He cared about each one of us in a separate and important way.” Medeiros said Bajo made a lasting impact at the facility and in the hearts of all of those who knew him. “It’s not just about the fact that he was an amazing doctor, but he was an amazing human that can never, ever be replaced,” Medeiros said. Medeiros said one of Bajo’s mottos was “carpe diem,” a Latin phrase that encourages people to make the most of the current moment. “That’s the legacy we’ll carry on, is for us to continue to seize the day and ‘carpe diem’ always,” Medeiros said. Raschke said he finds some solace in knowing that Bajo died doing something he loved and that “so many people are trying to live up to the standard he set.” “It’s not just because somebody died and we want to say nice things,” Raschke said. “He was truly unique. None of us had ever met anyone like him and no one ever had that much influence. “The people with the highest titles and accolades, they could never come close to the influence he had.”

A Phoenix man has been charged in connection with an ISIS-inspired attack in Texas in 2015. Abdul Khabir Wahid was charged with one count of witness tampering and another count of making false statements to authorities in connection with the 2015 attack in Garland, according to a federal grand-jury indictment. Federal authorities said the attack was inspired by the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, which has encouraged terror attacks. In May 2015, authorities say, two Phoenix men, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, attacked a “draw a prophet” contest in Garland. Simpson and Soofi were shot and killed by police after the men shot at a security guard, who suffered a non-fatal injury. A third man, Abdul Kareem, was accused of providing Simpson and Soofi with weapons. He was found guilty of conspiracy, interstate transportation of firearms, false statements, being a felon in possession of firearms and conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was sentenced earlier this year to 30 years in prison. According to the latest indictment, Simpson and Hamid associated with Wahid from early 2014 until just before the attack. The FBI had conversations with Wahid on May 6 and June 10 in 2015, the indicment says. They questioned him about his interactions with Simpson and Soofi, according to the indictment. The indictment says Wahid knowingly made false statements in an investiga-

tion that involved international and domestic terrorism. The indictment says Wahid told the FBI that the only thing Simpson and Soofi gave him during a May 1, 2015, visit to his home was a bowl of soup. He also told the FBI the only topics of discussion between him, Soofi and Simpson were the soup, Wahid’s children, a good role model for his daughter and Islam, the indictment says. However, the FBI believed Wahid was given an envelope and a key by Soofi and Simpson, the indictment alleges. He was also told to deliver the envelope and key to another individual on May 6, 2015, the indictment says. The indictment, which was handed up in March and initially ordered sealed, does not provide further details. Wahid has filed a civil suit against an FBI investigator in the criminal case. In that suit, he said he asked the court to have his personal property returned in June, and it eventually was. “I believe that this is nothing more than a whitewash,” Wahid said in a separate court filing in May. “They found nothing and I am living proof that they didn’t, because if they did find anything, I would not be able to type this letter to you today. I would be incarcerated.” Court paperwork showed the FBI executed a search warrant and seized cellphones, a laptop, Social Security paperwork and a tactical rail from Wahid’s house, among other things. He said the tactical rail was an “airsoft or BB gun” that belonged to his son. All of the items seized from Wahid’s residence were returned to him within two weeks of their initial seizure, according to a federal court document.

It’s time to get your twirl on! And if the crown fits, bring that queen or king home for free. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control will host a “senior dog prom” this Saturday, July 15, featuring dogs 7 years of age and older. “We’re not really looking at it as an adoption event,” said Melissa Gable, an Animal Care and Control spokeswoman. “But if nothing else, we can bring attention to the fact that there are some really good dogs in the shelter that are often overlooked because they’re not puppies.” The prom will have a gold and pink “Happily Ever After” theme with about 20 dogs and their volunteer “dates.” Dogs will be dressed in fine attire, such as tutus, tiaras, feather boas and bow ties. And of course, refreshments will be served, just as they would at any fancy dance. The volunteers will be there to escort their assigned dog and answer the public’s questions about their dog date. By the end of the night, two lucky dogs will be crowned prom king and queen. The prom will take place in one room, and only those animals will be available for adoption at that time. Gable said all of the prom dogs will have waived adoption fees if anyone wants to give them a “fur-ever” home.

The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Animal Care and Control’s Phoenix location, 2500 S. 27th Ave. Senior pets can be the ideal man’s best friend, as they are gentle, calm and often trained, according to shelter officials. People often think if the dog is older, it will die soon, Gable said. Use common sense to protect yourself from identity theft Identity theft is the fastestgrowing crime in the United States. The recent Identity Fraud Study by Javelin Strategy & Research reported that 15.4 million Americans lost $16 billion in 2016 because of it. The Federal Trade Commission handles ID-theft complaints. ID fraud grew 16 percent in 2016 to nearly 400,000 FTC complaints. Only 27 percent of ID thefts are ever reported to law-enforcement authorities. And although not every ID theft results in ID fraud, every two seconds, an American becomes a victim of ID theft. The FTC has ranked the 2016 worst states for ID-theft complaints. Tops are Michigan, Florida and Delaware. The states

with the fewest ID-theft complaints are Hawaii, South Dakota and West Virginia. Arizona is the 10th hardest-hit state for ID theft, with the average loss per scam of $1,129 (the national average is a $450 loss). ID theft can destroy your credit rating, expose you to unauthorized debt, steal your taxrefund check and even prevent you from obtaining needed medical help. The term “ID theft” was coined in 1964. It is the intentional misuse of another person’s name for harm or personal gain. ID theft is divided into several categories: » Criminal ID theft: posing as another victim when arrested for a crime. » Financial ID theft: using another person’s identity to obtain credit, goods and services. » Cloning ID theft: using an-

other person’s identity in daily life. » Medical ID theft: using another person’s identity to obtain medical care and/or medications. » Child ID theft: targeting children for ID fraud (it is reported that 10.2 percent of children are victims). » Ghosting ID theft: targeting the dead (it is reported that 2.5 million deceased are victimized per year). » SMiShing: a phony text message sent to your cellphone that downloads a virus into your mobile phone. Tips to protect yourself from ID fraud: » Do not post confidential information on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. » Use only protected online shopping sites. » Use difficult passwords

and change them often. » Place a freeze on your credit report so you are notified of an unauthorized opening of an account. » Use credit-monitoring systems and regularly examine your credit report every six months. » Pay attention to online alerts from merchants. » Protect your driver’s license and Social Security card. » Immediately report an ID theft and fraud to law-enforcement authorities. 1-dish chicken goes from cooktop right into oven I used to be addicted to Post-it Notes. My cookbooks were loaded with them. Every other page — a bright little reminder to try this one, try that one, modify this one, lighten up that one. But it became sticker shock. Too many notes to myself. So now, I keep one folder on my computer desktop for recipes that I must get to. That’s where this chicken dish comes in. It was emailed to me by a reader several years ago, who wrote, “Jan, I know you love chicken scaloppini, but I would like you to try this dish. It’s similar to scaloppini but without the Marsala wine. It is topped off with two cheeses, which, when finished in the oven, melts over the chicken and mushrooms, making it divine!” Well, if “divine” is anywhere in the recipe description, I’m in. 4 skinned and boned chicken breasts 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 1 (8-ounce) package of sliced fresh mushrooms 1 ⁄2 cup all-purpose flour 1 ⁄2 cup chicken broth 1 ⁄2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1 ⁄2 cup Parmesan cheese 2 chopped green onions, sliced thin 1 ⁄4 teaspoon salt 1 ⁄2 teaspoon pepper Slice the four chicken breasts in half lengthwise. Cover with plastic wrap or place in plastic zippered bag. Pound each slice to about 1⁄8 inch thick to tenderize. n a large cast-iron or other oven-safe skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium high heat. Sauté the mushrooms until golden brown, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Set aside. Add two more tablespoons of butter to

the skillet. Place flour on a dinner plate. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour to coat. Cook chicken with the butter over medium high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove the chicken from the skillet, leaving the drippings. Add last two tablespoons of butter and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, scraping up all the chicken bits. When liquid begins to thicken, place chicken back in the skillet and turn each piece to coat with the liquid. Pour the mushrooms over the top of chicken. Turn off heat. In a bowl, mix together both cheeses, green onions, salt and pepper. Sprinkle cheese mixture over chicken and mushrooms and bake at 425 degrees for about 12 minutes or until cheese has melted and slightly browned. Serve with rice or pasta. Serves 4.

Shiny or dull, silver makes for a great collectible When it comes to precious metals, one of the best to collect in terms of long-lasting value is silver. Some people like how it shimmers when polished. Others like to wear it. Still others know that during hard economic times, silver tends to be resilient. We see a lot of silver come through our auction house in all forms. Here are some things to consider when buying silver:

Know the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated Just because a piece is marked as silver doesn’t mean it’s sterling. Most sterling silver will have a hallmark, or stamp, of .925. This means that the metal is 925 parts of 1,000 pure silver. Rare sterling will have a hallmark of .999, but this is harder to manipulate. Silver-plated items have a thin layer of silver bonded to a metal base, such as copper, nickel or brass. These pieces tend to be magnetic and will jump toward a strong magnet.

Examine the maker’s marks Earlier this month, an antique silver Russian icon realized $475 at one of our Saturday auctions. This 12.5-inch by 10.5inch unique piece was marked as .875 silver and dated back to 1881. The silver value alone was not worth a lot, but in this instance, bidders knew the value of purchasing a piece with the maker’s mark of Andrey Shikhin and assay master’s mark of Ivan Yefimovich Konstantinov. Going back to sterling silver marks, many foreign pieces do not have the .925 marking. That’s because the standard varies. Research silver coins I could write a separate article just about this topic. Whether you’re collecting silver coins, silver rounds or silver bullion bars, be sure to do your research. A good guide is the “Standard Catalog of World Coins.” Recently, we sold a 2016 ANACS-graded MS70 Canada S-Shield Superman coin for $120. The $5 coin was marked .999 silver and weighed one ounce. It was purchased on the first day of issue as Number 47 out of 743. Superman is an icon that’s not going away anytime soon. I believe this partnership between the Royal Canadian Mint and DC Comics was smart, as this coin will most likely appreciate in value over time. As for gold versus silver, it’s a lot more expensive to collect gold. I guess you could say that’s the silver lining in collecting this grayish-white metal. Question: My kids are already getting bored with summer vacation. Please send me some boredom busters. Answer: It doesn’t take too long for children to lament, “I’m bored.” Here are some ideas to put more fun into the long summer holidays and possibly more learning. » Neighborhood movie night: Your children will have a lot to do to set it up. First, they must transform the backyard into a movie theater. This can be done with only a projector and a large bedsheet. They also need to select a movie to show, make posters to advertise and create tickets for admission. A decision needs to be made on whether to have refreshments available and what type of seating there will be. » Book club: Children will pack up their favorite snack, get a bottle of water and grab a good book. Next, they head to a community swimming pool or the local park. Everyone can read and eat their lunch. Do you have trouble getting back to sleep? QUESTION: My husband has tried many sleep aids over the years, but they don’t keep him asleep. He falls asleep in just minutes but wakes up about four or five hours later and cannot get back to sleep. He currently takes trazodone and it doesn’t help. Neither have Ambien, Lunesta or melatonin. He is active during the day. He tried counseling, but dropped out and refuses to go back. Do you have any ideas that might help? ANSWER: There are two prescription medications that are supposed to help with this problem. One is Intermezzo (zolpidem). It is for treating insomnia “when a middle-of-the-night awakening is followed by difficulty returning to sleep.” Intermezzo contains the same active ingredient as Ambien, but it is a sublingual tablet (under the tongue) that goes to work much more quickly. This is appropriate only if there are at least four more hours before time to get up, though. If he has to get up in two or three hours, he may have morning grogginess and might not be able to drive safely. It also may cause nausea or headache. Silenor (doxepin) is for “the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty with sleep maintenance.” That is a fancy way of describing your husband’s problem. This antidepressant medicine also can cause next-day drowsiness, nausea or a rise in blood pressure. Unlike Intermezzo, which is taken if and when the patient wakes up, Silenor is taken half an hour before bedtime. He will need to discuss either of these with his doctor. He also might try a natural remedy. According to Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, California poppy can also help a person stay asleep, especially if muscle pain or cramping is waking him up. Look for a tincture of Eschscholzia californica. This is not an opium poppy. Q: Is it safe to take baking soda and water three times a day? For years, I had acid reflux and heartburn and took pills for relief. Gradually, the pills stopped working. I had surgery to repair a hiatal hernia. That relieved the acid reflux, but I still have heartburn. The baking soda helped somewhat, but I read that it is not good for people with high blood pressure. Are

there any other remedies for heartburn? A: Baking soda in water (1⁄2 teaspoon in 4 ounces) is a traditional heartburn remedy that works quite well. It is pretty high in sodium, though, with 616 mg in each 1⁄2 teaspoon. If you used this remedy three times a day, the sodium would add up to 1,848 mg. That could be enough to raise blood pressure and explains why you should not use it for more than two weeks. There are some other simple remedies that you might find helpful against heartburn. Try chewing gum after your meal. One clinical trial found that Orbit gum is effective for these symptoms. Another found that an after-dinner walk reduced heartburn. Another possible approach is an herbal tea of anise, lemon balm, chamomile or ginger. Ginger ale or candied ginger also can help. My mother, now gone from this Earth — bless her heart — was a mysterious creature. She was a health nut who forbade her children any sugar, while she smoked. She was quick with a laugh when you belched or farted, but went full-on Hulk when you accidentally spilled the milk. And, honestly, she was the asker of a slew of daily questions that made no sense. Until now. I finally get it, Mom. Behind these bizarre questions lurked a conscientious multitasker. Behind those questions for which there was no logical answer stood a woman who, at times, disguised her humanity out of a profound love for her children. Here are the then-puzzling questions she asked, now so clear.

1. What should we have for dinner? This was always asked when her five kids were slurping the last of the no-sugar granola cereal, washed down with goat’s milk. Today, I ask my three girls the same question as they finish their toaster strudel. Otherwise, how am I going to know what meat to defrost? Or that I need to remind myself to pick up a jar of spaghetti sauce on my way home from work? (By the way, this question was really a form of speaking out loud. Grandparents, foster parents have special role in promoting reading As a reading specialist and former teacher, I am having more and more concerned grandparents and foster parents ask me about their grandchild’s or foster child’s reading ability. They usually ask the same things: Are they reading at grade level? Are they falling behind? What can I do to encourage them to read? In today’s society, many grandparents are taking over the role of guardian, provider, nurturer and advocate. As the number of children in foster care rises, more foster parents are also facing the challenge of what to do when a child appears to not being doing well in the foundation of educational success: reading. Many of these grandparents and foster parents are also dealing with issues related to health coverage, legal issues, financial concerns and complex family situations. For these “heroes in disguise,” it’s important for them to know that grandparents and foster parents are also the first responders to a child’s reading success. How can you help with a child’s reading success? Reading with the child is one of the most important activities you can do. Who teaches them? You do!

Reading tips How to choose a book for the child: » Ask the child to tell you about the things that interest them. » Take them to the library to choose the books they want to read. Borrowing library books is free! If they choose a book that is not at their grade-level reading ability, don’t worry. This becomes a read-aloud book for you to read with them. Reading success begins with readaloud books. This starts at birth, so for the very young who can’t talk yet, choose picture books to read to them. » Ask your adult friends, librarian or bookstore clerk for book suggestions. Check online with the American Library Association or the International Reading Association for lists of books. » Let babies play with books that are sturdy (and drool-proof). » If you can, read the book they choose before you read it to the child. This gives you time to prepare an enthusiastic reading. » Read slowly. » Read the same book repeatedly.

If the above steps are taken and a child still shows a lack of interest in reading or understanding, it’s time to take action. Talk immediately to your child’s teacher or other professionals. Research has shown that if a child cannot read by the end of the third grade, they may face a significant challenge in catching up to their peers. 100 years of progress: Occupational therapists help restore lives My career as an occupational therapist has taught me that nothing is easy following a traumatic injury. The road to recovery is full of hurdles. Patients need extensive training to relearn the skills necessary for modern life. Occupational therapists are there every step of the way to ensure that patients accomplish their goals to reenter their home and work lives. This year, occupational therapy turns 100 years old. Over the past 10 decades, technological advances have helped OT programs deliver high-quality care to those who have experienced an illness or injury that is preventing them from living their most productive lives. Many of the modalities we previously used have been replaced by myriad hightech devices. Robotics, exoskeletons and virtual reality are all helping shape the next phase of occupational therapy. At Banner University Medical Center Phoenix, we are one of four Arizona facilities to possess an Armeo robotic exoskeleton. This device helps patients regain function of their arms and hands. Sensors detect when a patient is struggling to carry out a specific movement and offer the exact amount of support needed to finish the task. Using the Armeo, patients play “games” where they strengthen their grip, rotate their wrist or other important movements involving the upper extremity. Although tools like this are extremely valuable, they rely on a patient’s own drive to succeed. Those who have the speediest recoveries have one thing in common: an unwavering desire to improve. As occupational therapists, our primary aim is helping patients discover what motivates them and using creative thinking and innovative technology to fuel that passion. The human aspect of occupational therapy will persist even as technology continues to advance. One of my patients works with horses. He is part of a small community of craftsmen and has struggled to get back

Would Ohio sheriff allow overdose victims to die? And the winner (at least for today) of the Sheriff Joe Arpaio Wannabe Award is Butler County, Ohio, Sheriff Richard Jones. Jones was an early supporter (like Arpaio) of then-candidate Donald Trump. And, like Arpaio, he apparently likes being in the news. Sheriff Jones told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he will not allow his deputies to carry Nar-

can, the overdose-reversal drug that has saved the lives of many victims of our national opioid epidemic. “They never carried it,” the sheriff said. “Nor will they. That’s my stance.” This comes from a sheriff living and working in a state with a record number of overdose deaths. Apparently, Jones is the only sheriff in southwestern Ohio with such a policy, although a city councilman from the town of Middletown, also in

Butler County, actually suggested not responding to overdose calls. What is wrong with us? Has our nasty political discourse corroded even our core humanitarian beliefs? That’s like suggesting doctors treat only “nice” patients. Or that we prosecute criminals only if they harm “good” people. Narcan revives drug users who overdose from heroin or other opioids. It has also been used to save first responders

who’ve been exposed to dangerous levels of the drugs while on the job. Our law enforcement officers and other first responders aren’t in the business of judging people. They’re in the business of saving them. The judgments come later. Sheriff Jones isn’t buying that argument. He told the Enquirer that individuals who are revived with Narcan can become violent and, to his mind, are rarely happy to

To rely on the Center for Arizona Policy and its president, Cathi Herrod, to determine the role Planned Parenthood plays in women’s health in Arizona and then for that group to write the policy that legislators will turn into law with very little concern for the truth is really bothersome to me. For Cathi Herrod to state, “Planned Parenthood has worked hard to rebrand itself as a women’s health provider, but their main busi-

ness is still abortion,” just proves once again to me that her inability to tell the truth when it would get in the way of her beliefs and her mission of preventing women access to the only health care many of them have is all that matters to her. It would really hurt the message of “abortion being the main business of Planned Parenthood” if Cathy Herrod, and for that matter Gov. Ducey were willing to truthfully say that only about 10 percent of Planned Parenthood clients are seeking safe, legal abortions. Having legislators that are more than willing to let the Center for Arizona Policy determine what they will act upon as law for the people of the state of Arizona is really deserting the people that need their help the most. To not be able to count on a governor or a Legislature to do the right thing is very sad and an unacceptable way to govern our great state. I am deeply concerned with the continuation of

Help when it was needed Yesterday, on 86th Street right near Mohave school in Scottsdale, my husband and I (a couple in our 80s) were driving home from Trader Joe’s when suddenly our car started to make loud noises and we pulled over to the side of the road. It turned out we had a blowout! Whew! Anyway, as my husband started to call our insurance to take care of the problem, a car pulled over and the driver got out and asked if he could help.

He said he was a fireman. The temperature was 108 degrees and it would have been hard to wait for the insurance company to arrive — even in the shade. He asked me if I wanted to sit in his car with his wife, Beth, and their baby. When I got in the car, his wife said she is a nurse in Scottsdale and their little boy was maybe a year old. After the tire was changed and as I was climbing back into our own car, I asked the young family to follow us to our home that was close by, where I went inside to get some of our daughter-inlaw’s children’s books! Reagan behind library closing Joel Feldman wrote about all the accomplishments Michele Reagan has done since she has been in office. But he failed to mention the closing of the AZ Genealogy Library so she would have more meeting rooms. She did this in July, six months after being elected — when she though most of us would be out of town — but with two weeks’ notice. Well, the needed space was not needed, so now instead of books, etc., she has installed three cases for her exhibit room. No one knows about it. But it is certainly better than a research library.
