Following the well-traveled real estate path was never part of Dan Noma Jr.’s business strategy.

But the real estate veteran’s embracing of the unconventional has not only been successful for the Chandler native, it also aims to keep his real estate and investment firm Venture REI relevant in an evolving industry that can turn even an experienced firm into a dinosaur.

The firm’s new Super Seller AZ, an online platform that grants sellers the money-saving benefits of a for-sale-by-owner transaction along with the advantages that come with a full-service Realtor’s expertise, is Noma’s latest asset.

This format is the result of Venture REI’s partnership with the nationwide licensed brokerage Xome.com, a transparent auction-type site that sends leads to its partners in exchange for referral fees.

This platform in which sellers pay zero in commission fees, because buyers pay a 5 percent premium to cover them, was the first its kind available in Arizona when Venture launched it in fall 2017.

As of mid-December 2017, 60 days after Super Seller went live, about 20 transactions were made using it, Noma said. Nationally, Xome.com has sold 70,000 homes since launching in 2015, he said.

“This is the direction real estate is going. Change is coming, and being on (the) front end is better,” said Noma, who started Venture REI in 2011.

Although buyers and sellers can negotiate online directly, sellers receive the perks of a Realtor, like open houses, marketing and paperwork, without paying a cent. Buyers receive appraisals and, like a traditional sale, aren’t expected to pay over that value. Also, for the first time, the buyer’s premium can be financed, Noma said.

Never a traditional agent Even when Noma worked for other brokerage firms, he was never a traditional listing agent. He was always looking for ways to stay ahead of competitors. Over the years, Noma saw it was getting easier for sellers and buyers to communicate online and negotiate their own deals. He also started to notice a

slow but steady uptick in for-sale-byowner transactions that didn’t have a need for agents.

“I was seeing pressure on an industry that is old and dated. I started looking for opportunities that were innovative … to keep real estate agents relevant,” Noma said.

He sought out and implemented the platform to do that. The 20 property transactions done on Super Seller AZ have involved young professionals who are tech-savvy. They compare it to eBay, Noma said.

Heavier reliance on the Internet has hit the real estate industry. With more than 90 percent of firms having websites, the most common feature on those are property listings, according to the

National Association of Realtors. Transacting online would be a natural move.

It also dovetails with the preferences of Millennials, who comprise the largest group of first-time buyers at 66 percent.

E-commerce has hit retail with Amazon, travel with Expedia, individual deals with Craigslist and transportation with Uber. Real estate makes sense, especially with this new crop of buyers, Noma explained.

“Consumers are used to transacting online. Ten years ago, not as much,” he said. “The Millennial buyer, they don’t know any different. They don’t know the days of travel agents and taxi cabs. Their comfort level of transacting online is higher.”

The son of a developer, Noma wasn’t

satisfied with the typical brokerages that were limited to just residential or commercial properties and didn’t offer the options he wanted to offer. He started Venture REI to satisfy his comprehensive yet atypical criteria.

“Growing up, I thought (real estate) was always an archaic system,” Noma said.

who also felt pent up and craved something different in the real estate space.

Since starting, Venture REI has experienced 15 percent annual growth and has finished in the top five Valley brokerages for sales volume, Noma said.

The Scottsdale corporate headquarters is joined by a second Scottsdale office and offices in Phoenix, Gilbert, Tempe and Surprise.

Constantly pushing the envelope and focusing on what everyone else in the in-

dustry is not doing rather than copying or improving on what they are doing, has made his firm unique, Noma said.

“Being nimble, being able to think outside the box, without any restrictions or a corporate level decision maker.

There’s no franchise to answer to as to why something has to be a certain way,” he said.

Nick Porter has worked with Noma and Venture REI for the past four years securing seven residential investment properties around the Valley. Porter met Noma years before when he assisted him and his wife with finding their primary residence.

Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale in January displayed their visual, digital and performing artwork at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. This was the first annual Innovative Dream-Makers Expo.

All drawings, paintings, collages and mixed media pieces on display Jan. 22 were made by club members from nine club locations. The Lehi (Mesa), Hartley & Ruth Barker (Scottsdale), Thunderbirds (Scottsdale), Vestar (Phoenix) and Charros (Scottsdale) branches also prepared live performances. Performances included native hoop dancing, cheerleading, hip-hop dancing, singing, flamenco dancing and a theater skit.

The evening also featured a program started this fall called What’s Your Vision. This project honed entrepreneurial skills as kids made inventions solving problems they saw in their communities using innovative and collaborative techniques. Groups brought device prototypes, business cards and proposed budgets supporting their ideas.

The Phoenix man accused of killing at least nine people during a three-week stretch of 2017 vowed five years earlier that “violence is not the way,” according to prison Cleophus disciplinary records.

Cooksey Jr. Seeking to have 30 days of release credits reinstated in 2012 after he disobeyed commands from prison staff, Cleophus Cooksey Jr. admitted being “reckless” and said he was “remorseful,”according to Arizona Department of Corrections records newly obtained by The Arizona Republic.

“It will not be in vain,” Cooksey wrote in the request. “Please understand my sincerity. I have forgiven myself. Now I’m asking for your forgiveness. Thank you.”

The documents add insight into the mind and actions of a convicted felonturned-aspiring-rapper who nicknamed himself “Playboy” before he was arrested at the scene of a double homicide Dec. 17 and charged with murdering his mother and stepfather.

Phoenix police have since said that through the use of new technology, Cooksey, now 35, has been linked to “several homicides” in Phoenix, Glendale and Avondale.

Convicted of manslaughter as a teenager in 2001, Cooksey has spent the majority of his adult life in prison, where he incurred a number of conduct violations, The Republic first reported Jan. 18.

Five months after first entering the Department of Corrections, Cooksey was found guilty of drug possession, the first of at least 22 violations he would be found guilty of during the ensuing years in prison.

Fights, pepper spray, ‘love letters’ Among the recorded infractions, Cooksey repeatedly taunted prison staff during meal time and tested positive for marijuana use while incarcerated.

He fought with other inmates, sometimes spurring prison guards to deploy pepper spray to break up the scrums, records show, though nobody appears to have been seriously injured.

A potential new cellmate said he was intimidated when Cooksey told him, “I don’t want you in here. You need to get out,” prison staffers wrote. Cooksey would later reportedly tell them, “It doesn’t matter who you put in here. You will be putting them in a very dangerous situation.”

Eileen Mitchell laughs when she tells how essential it is to have 10-year-old Joebert along when visiting a warehouse store.

“I’ll say, ‘Where is this,’ or ‘Where is such and such,’ and he will take me right to it,” says Mitchell, the boy’s court-appointed special advocate.

The story tells you two important things about Joebert, she says. One, he is whip smart — smart enough to commit to memory the inventory of a sprawling warehouse store. Two, he is eager to help others.

“He loves being helpful,” Mitchell says. “He loves to cook.”

And Joebert also loves playing sports of all sorts.

“My favorite sport is football,” Joebert says.

But he was an enthusiastic student for rugby coach Ian Gregor, who taught him the basics of the sport that is something of a mix of football and soccer.

Joebert says he likes school and he earned “student of the month” last fall.

“I’m a very fast learner,” Joebert says. “My favorite subjects are science and social studies. I really like to study about things.”

Joebert got a ukulele for Christmas and is trying to teach himself how to play it.

He was so impressed with that first transaction that when Porter wanted to pursue a venture in property development and a friend recommended Noma, the decision was easy.

“He has the people skills combined with negotiation skills and real savvy business sense, so he can come full circle on whatever deal it is,” said Porter, who lives in Paradise Valley.

Officials believed both were sent by Cooksey — a claim corroborated by handwriting analysis — and warranted staff obstruction charges.

Cooksey appealed the allegation, writing the charge “proves nothing!”

“I don’t mean no disrespect, but I don’t believe (the staffer) is a handwriting expert,” he wrote.

The allegations were upheld, and his appeal went nowhere.

Continued troubles with the law Cooksey was released on community supervision in January 2015 and was in and out of custody the following 2 1⁄2 years.

He was found to have violated terms of his release almost immediately and tested positive for marijuana and cocaine use, records show. He was rearrested in connection with the violations and on charges of absconding supervision.

Cooksey was officially released at

the end of his 16-year sentence July 28, 2017.

Four months later, police say he started shooting people of varied demographics: younger and older adults; men and women; black, white and Hispanic, some whom he knew, and others apparently strangers.

Law-enforcement officials in the Valley say they continue to investigate Cooksey’s potential involvement in other unsolved homicides.

Court records show Cooksey has been formally charged with two of the nine slayings, and his cash-only bond is set at $5 million. A Maricopa County judge is weighing whether Cooksey should be held in custody without bond, and additional charges are pending.

A pre-trial conference is slated for Feb. 15.

Authorities urge anyone with information about Cooksey’s potential involvement in any other crimes to call the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. People also can leave tips online by visiting silentwitness.org or contacting a local law enforcement agency.

Watching and taking part in Scottsdale's Parada del Sol has been an annual tradition for decades. Multiple generations of families have had parts in the parade since its inception.

For 65 years, the Parada del Sol has helped to preserve Scottsdale’s Western history. Originally a rodeo parade, the event is still tied to rodeo but also stands on its own.

This year, the parade will take place in downtown Scottsdale on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Parada del Sol Rodeo will run March 8-11 at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

The parade is part of Scottsdale’s Western Week festivities that celebrate the Old and New West in the city. Events include a Western-themed art walk on Thursday, the Hashknife Pony Express arrival on Friday, the parade and Trail's End festival on Saturday and a Native American cultural festival on Saturday and Sunday.

Since the 1950s, the Hashknife Pony Express ride from Holbrook to Scottsdale has served as a kickoff for the Parada del Sol. Each year, around 25 horseback riders and 20,000 pieces of mail make the 200-mile journey, which represents how deliveries were made in the Old West.

This year's parade theme is “Scottsdale’s Past, Present & Future.” There will be three grand marshals who fit with the theme: Cactus League Hall of Fame inductee Gaylord Perry, the five-time state champion Saguaro High School Sabercats football team and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

The parade will have more than 100

entries, including a dancing horses group, Mexican charros, horse-drawn carriages, Native American dancers, middle- and high-school marching bands, costumed Arabian horse riders, members of the U.S. Marshals Posse and Hashknife Pony Express riders.

Scottsdale’s Police, Fire, Water and Community Services departments will also take part.

Local marching bands are always part of the annual parade.

The historic Howdy Dudettes, a group of Scottsdale ambassadors formed in the late 1950s, made their comeback during last year’s parade and will return for this year’s festivities.

Trail's End Festival The Trail’s End Festival, a daylong, family-friendly event, will follow the parade.

Multiple stages will showcase local Western and rock bands, Aztec and ballet folklorico dancers and other community acts.

The Cowboy Kids Zone offers inflatables, a petting zoo, cowboy games and arts and crafts.

In the Hispanic Village, visitors can learn about the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday in which families honor their deceased loved ones.

The festival will also have re-enactments and staged gunfights, food vendors, a beer and wine garden, BMX bike demos, hot-rod displays, an animatronic dinosaur and pie-eating and chili cook-

off competitions.

Parada del Sol's link to the past Tagged by its first mayor as “the West’s Most Western Town,” Scottsdale has become known for its Old West heritage, arts, culture and architecture. The parade and rodeo are two of the oldest community events in the city.

A committee of 20 core volunteers plans the parade each year. Passion for preserving that heritage drives them to stay involved.

“Our intent is to make sure the past isn’t forgotten, that we know where our roots are, that we know what our heritage is. And I think everybody wants to be a cowboy at one point in time,” said Wendy Springborn, president for the Parada del Sol’s board of directors.

Many Scottsdale residents have taken part in the parade over the years. Springborn marched in the parade, twirling pom poms and batons as a child, and became involved in organizing the parade years later.

Don Chiappetti, treasurer for the parade’s directors, said the event attracts 20,000 to 30,000 spectators each year.

Chiappetti attended the parade as a child and later rode in it with the Hashknife Pony Express for about 20 years.

For him, the parade helps keep Scottsdale’s Western heritage alive.

“We have a passion and don’t want to see it die, because it is a fun event. Everyone who’s spent any amount of time in Scottsdale, either growing up or having been here for a while, has a fun story about Parada del Sol. We just don’t want to lose that,” Chiappetti said.

The number of confirmed flu cases in Arizona this season rivals the total seen during the H1N1 flu pandemic of 2009-10, with 19,279 cases of influenza reported this season as of last Saturday, state officials said.

The number of reported cases is a sharp increase from the 2,175 total cases confirmed in the state last season. The annual flu season begins Oct. 1, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

The “season” continues through the following September, but state data show cases drop off significantly by May and remain low through summer.

This year’s flu season has reached severe levels across most of the United States, according to health officials.

The DHS said it’s still not too late to get a flu shot.

“If you haven’t been vaccinated, protect yourself by getting your flu shot today,” said Dr. Cara Christ, the DHS director. “Just like putting on your seat belt, getting vaccinated can save you a trip to the hospital.”

Arizona saw 19,906 influenza cases reported during the 2009-10 H1N1 flu pandemic, Christ wrote.

According to the DHS, the five-year average for flu activity shows a peak in Arizona in early February. However, this year, numbers peaked in the last week of December and the first week of January, with more than 2,000 confirmed cases each week, before declining the following two weeks.

the week ending Jan. 27, an uptick of 254 cases from the previous week, the DHS said.

The number of states experiencing “high” influenza activity has increased to 39 states, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. Arizona is among them.

The flu spreads through contact or when an infected person sneezes, coughs or even talks.

Those with the flu this season are urged to stay home.

“Take precautions like staying home when you’re sick and covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing,” Christ wrote.

Children younger than 5 years old, adults 65 or older and people with chronic diseases may be at a higher risk for serious flu complications, Christ wrote.

“In addition to getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself from illness by washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching your face,” Christ wrote.

Arizonans must work together to protect kids Safe, stable and nurturing families and communities are at the heart of healthy child development. Raising children cannot be accomplished by parents alone — it takes a village to help kids grow into strong and stable adults.

An analysis of the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Child & Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) found that more than 38 percent of children experience at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) during their lifetime, with Arizona leading the nation for ACEs experienced by children ages 0-5. Further research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention links these traumatic experiences with future health problems including depression, shortened lifespans, delayed

cognitive development and addiction.

Adversity in childhood can have profound long-term effects and can reduce a child’s potential to become the foundation of a prosperous and sustainable society.

Child development is like a scale that has two sides. One side gets stacked with negative factors like stress, violence and poverty, while the other side gets loaded with positive factors such as supportive relationships, skill-building opportunities and access to quality health care.

Resilience happens when a child’s outcomes are tipped toward the positive, even when there are negative factors loaded on the scale.

When communities work together to support our youth, outcomes are significantly better and can change a child’s future.

When children have the support of a caring adult who teaches them coping skills and establishes positive routines, they are much more equipped to overcome the negative effects of ACEs. Furthermore, when school staff offers trauma-informed support, affirm

the real-life experiences of the families they serve, and when parents have resources to provide healthy, consistent boundaries at home; resiliency can flourish.

That’s why Phoenix Children’s has partnered with retailer Kohl’s Cares, area schools and community partners to implement the Kohl’s Mindful Me program, which teaches school staff, children and families wellness and coping techniques. Kohl’s Mindful Me aims to build childhood and family resiliency through self-regulation and stress management, such as positive parenting, yoga, mindfulness and gardening.

The program is designed to transform how school staff responds to challenging behaviors to ensure that potentially struggling students are not unfairly excluded from beneficial classroom and school engagement.

Although this program is in its beginning stages, the data behind its inception are extremely promising. It means that programs like Kohl’s Mindful Me’s teacher and parent outreach are charting the right course.

Anyone can take part in positively affecting the lives of children and helping to better our community by joining the network of community members, educators, government officials, social service workers and health-care professionals who are working to combat ACEs. Arizonans can also partner with and support these groups to combat adversity’s long-term effects by supporting schools as they work to become traumasensitive environments, integrate selfmanagement curriculum and promote ACE’s training within classrooms.

Together, we can build a village more supportive of its children by equipping them with a steadfast foundation and the positive start to life they deserve. Arizona has a long history of rising to the occasion. We can do it. Our future depends on it.

A handwritten note is a lovely way to say thanks Is the thank-you note a lost art?

My office wall at Arizona Helping Hands is papered with thank-you notes. There are notes of gratitude from foster parents for the help we’ve provided with beds and cribs, notes from kids for bikes or gifts they’ve received from us through our Birthday Dreams program, notes from teens who have received a footlocker to store their prized possessions, and others.

It’s really encouraging and inspiring to walk by these notes day after day.

Sabrina wrote, “I really appreciate all the stuff you did for us.” Mason wrote, “Thank you for the cookies and the stuff.

Keep doing what you’re doing so that others can have a better life.”

In today’s world, the thought of sitting down and writing a note of thanks is beyond most people. It’s so much easier to just mumble your thanks and move on.

We think “they know I’m appreciative.”

The fact is “they” probably do, but a note says so much more.

In our line of work — assisting families in foster care who have been through so much — we really don’t need to be thanked. The hugs and tears of gratitude as we load up the beds and cribs to give kids a safe place to sleep and pile on support for struggling families is more than enough to make us know we’ve done good.

But I’ve got to say that to get a thankyou note, drawn with crayons and filled with heartfelt emotions, can take your

breath away.

And what a lesson to teach these youngsters. When someone does something nice for you say thanks! Gratitude seems to be an attitude that’s taken for granted — but should it be? Think of the last time you received a note of thanks and how it made you feel.

Randy Pausch wrote, “Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.”

I can tell you that those notes I walk past dozens of times a day are truly powerful. They inspire all of us at Arizona Helping Hands to reach a little farther, to try a little harder, to put aside our problems and cares and help every child, every family who walks in the door.

No one needs to write a note of thanks for the work we do and the support we give. No one needs to pen a thank-you note for the holiday gift, birthday present or even a wedding gift.

But think of how much can be said with a simple handwritten note, how much emotion is shared on that piece of paper, how much love is spread to others through that tiny effort. A stamp costs you 50 cents, but the impact on the receiving end of a handwritten thank you note is priceless!

Denise Birdwell is turning things around for Coronado High School Since I moved here in 1993, the Scottsdale School District has had nine superintendents, which equates to an average of three years in the position each.

This constant turnover caused a massive breakdown in leadership in the district. By the time current superintendent Dr. Denise Birdwell came on the scene, nothing in the district was working correctly.

This breakdown had already trickled down to the schools and was affecting student achievement, which had steadily declined district-wide over the past 10 years.

Birdwell is the first superintendent in a long time to take a close look at student achievement and work on improving our schools by installing academic leaders as principals.

Unfortunately, as Birdwell learned the hard way, it is not easy to fix anything when everything is broken. Despite the odds, Birdwell is succeeding at Coronado High School.

former administrators and teachers who subscribed to the mantra that poor kids come to school to eat but cannot learn. Students were simply moved through the system. Some children spent four years attending Coronado but could not speak English when they graduated.

Birdwell and her team are changing the culture at Coronado.

The administrative and teaching staff is focused on improving academic

achievement and college and career readiness.

This year every senior took the SAT, filled out at least one college application and has or will experience a mock job interview.

nate obstacles these students faced, including an inability to pay the application fee.

Astonishingly, the Scottsdale Education Association’s leadership opposed these changes and recently expressed “no confidence” in Birdwell despite gains already made as a result of her Coronado Success Initiative.

Kudos to Mayor Jim Lane for recognizing in his State of the City address what is important for the continued success of Scottsdale.

Education is supposed to be about academic achievement. Unfortunately, many adults in the district do not see it that way.

The teachers union, with assistance from Respect Our Scottsdale Students (ROSS) principal editor and Facebook political gadfly Mike Norton, seems determined to force Birdwell out by any means possible.

Arizona WIC wins $500,000 grant The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service recently gave $1.1 million in grants to four Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children state agencies, including nearly $500,000 for the Arizona Department of Health Services.

These grants will help WIC state agencies develop, implement and evaluate innovative ways to improve benefit delivery and customer service to WIC participants.

WIC provides vital services to millions of low-income, nutritionally at-risk mothers, infants, and young children each year.

The focus area of the 2017/2018 WIC Special Project Grants is “Optimizing WIC Service Delivery.” Grantees will test strategies to improve the delivery of WIC services and improve customer experience in the program.

Once evaluated, the methods and best practices could be implemented by other state agencies.

Scottsdale Arts names new CEO

Louisiana arts executive Gerd Wuestemann, D.M.A., has been appointed the new president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts.

Board of Trustees Chair Kathy Wills announced that Wuestemann, executive director of the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, will take the top job for Scottsdale Arts, a not-for-profit arts organization with an annual operating budget of $11.5 million.

Wuestemann, an arts administrator for 10 years who has a total of 38 years of experience in the arts, will begin his new duties March 19. He will succeed Scottsdale Arts’ Interim president and CEO, Mike Miller, who will continue to serve on the Scottsdale Arts board.

In his new job, Wuestemann will oversee 71 full-time and 104 part-time staffers at Scottsdale Arts, whose mission is to create diverse visual, performing and public arts experiences that engage the community.

Scottsdale Arts operates the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Scottsdale Public Art. It administers arts and cultural affairs for the city and provides education and outreach programs in the form of tours, hands-on activities,

master classes, lectures, workshops and classroom-based and community outreach activities.

Group adopts Marine mural The Grand Canyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has adopted Scottsdale’s Marine Corps mural, which adorns several large wall sections northwest of the Civic Center Library.

The mural was created during Phoenix Marine Week in 2015. It depicts iconic U.S. Marine Corps images, plus a variety of Marine air and ground units training in an Arizona landscape.

A group of veterans, civilians and active-duty Marines came together last year to update the mural, which had been weathered by a year’s worth of heat and rain.

They included members of the DAR’s Grand Canyon Chapter and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Upkeep and maintenance of the mural will now be the responsibility of the DAR’s Grand Canyon Chapter.

90th Street work concluding Work is finishing on a project that will bring better access and transit flexibility to the 90th Street retail and health-care corridor.
