PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Clinton’s rousing nomination-acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention got top marks from Arizona’s delegation, with many saying they were inspired anew to take on Donald Trump and the Republicans.

“It was an awesome speech,” said former U.S. Rep. Ron Barber, D-Ariz., as he exited the stands after the balloons and confetti celebrating Clinton’s victory had fallen. “There was a lot of pressure on her tonight to deliver after what we saw with the president, the vice president, Bill and, certainly, Mrs. Obama.

They were great speeches, but this one laid out her plan, created a vision, was very positive; it’s all about coming together. So unlike the Republican convention.

“I am just so hyped up now to go do the job.”

Clinton, the former U.S. secretary of State, U.S. senator and first lady, accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination Thursday inside Wells Fargo Center, becoming the first woman in history to top a major party’s national ticket.

With Thursday’s conclusion of the Democratic National Convention, Clinton and her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, are poised for battle with Republican nominee Trump and his running mate, Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana, in a roughly three-and-a-half-month campaign before the Nov. 8 general election.

The four-day convention led up to Clinton’s acceptance of the nomination with speeches from President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton, the nominee’s husband. Clinton was introduced Thursday by her daughter, Chelsea.

Clinton’s speech was a mix of family history and past accomplishments, policy proposals and jabs at Trump, who accepted the Republican Party’s presidential nomination on July 21 during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Arizona speech watchers told The Arizona Republic they felt Clinton effectively addressed what polls have suggested may be her biggest liability: a

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, a convention delegate who had already returned to Arizona by the time Clinton spoke but watched it on TV, said Clinton demonstrated “she has the leadership and the temperament to be president.”

“She’s always done a great job in every single position that she has held throughout her public-service career,” Stanton said. “But she’s been around for such a long period of time, people have seen her name for such a long period of time, but they really don’t know her.

They don’t know her track record of success. ... The best indicator of future success is whether you’ve been successful previously, and she clearly has.”

U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., was a strong supporter of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in the Democratic primaries, but he is now on board with the Clinton campaign.

“I thought it was excellent in the sense that she dealt with the thing about ‘people don’t know me well, and I know that,’ ” Grijalva said inside the center. “I thought the economic themes were powerful. She dealt directly with the Sanders supporters, both on their issues and with their candidate. I thought it was unifying and gives us the momentum to go the next 102 days.”

Grijalva, one of the most liberal members of Congress, said he was disappointed with the Sanders delegates who continued to hold out against Clinton.

“The momentum, and the progressive agenda, that’s what’s key here,” he said.

“To be holding up signs for a third-party candidate, the Green Party, here at the Democratic convention, I thought just kind of marginalized them.”
