Several highly anticipated construction projects are welcoming new residents to DC Ranch—each with a dynamic focus on community living.

The Village at Silverleaf is a collection of villas and cottages conveniently located next to the Silverleaf Club. It is designed to emulate the intimate enclave of a Mediterranean village, and that’s exactly what its first two residents were looking for.

We’ll profile these snowbirds from Colorado as their dreams are about to become a reality.

In January, Camelot Homes wrapped up the final 15 homes in Market Street Villas.

This was the last land available for development within Desert Camp Village. The path and trail system that connects the homes to Market Street is a great way to interact with fellow residents and meet new neighbors. Not to mention how convenient it is to be able to walk to a restaurant or grocery store.

Still in the design phase is Sterling at Silverleaf, a condominium project being co-developed

by DMB and the New Home Company. Planned for the land north and east of the Village Health Club, the project’s density has been significantly reduced from 221 units to 72.

And speaking of new neighbors, some furry friends have moved into the area at the new Foothills Animal Rescue at Bell Road and Thompson Peak Parkway. We’ll take you on a tour of the beautiful new Brynne Smith Memorial Campus. Earlier this year, DC Ranch residents donated hundreds of pet toys and food to the shelter.

Ranch Updates DC Ranch Association hires new executive director

I

t’s official. The Ranch Association Board of Directors approved hiring Darren Shaw of San Jose, Calif. as its new executive director at its January board meeting. Shaw is a 26-year veteran in the property management sector and has spent the last 10 years managing a private country club and golf community in northern California. He plans to attend the Ranch Association annual meeting on April 3 and will officially take the helm in midApril. Look for an in-depth profile of Shaw in the next edition of Ranch News.

Wildflower Walk Saturday, March 25 | 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Desert Camp Community Center Join your neighbors for a guided wildflower walk along the DC Ranch paths and trails with Landscape Manager Tom Wright. Last November, the DC Ranch Association landscape team spread wildflower seed throughout the landscaped areas of Thompson Peak Parkway in preparation for spring. Now that the flowers are in full bloom,

Wright will point out species like desert marigold, owl’s clover, firewheel, desert bluebells, penstemon, showy primrose, lupine, and desert globemallow.

Light snacks will be provided and pets are welcome.

Residents are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water for the 1-mile walk.

Board to consider speed enforcement options

S

peeding in DC Ranch continues to be a top resident concern. The penalties for speeding include written notification and monetary fines, which can exceed $300 for multiple violations of excessive speeding, defined as 20 mph over the posted limit. Speeding is most prevalent along Desert Camp Drive, Horseshoe Canyon and Windgate Pass, according to monitoring data collected over the past couple of years. A resident forum held last month reviewed enforcement options, including use of a camera to capture speeders. The Ranch Association board will explore additional enforcement options at the March 6 meeting. Residents are encouraged to attend the session set for 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center.

he Ranch Association welcomed new and returning Neighborhood Voting Members with a special reception hosted by The Country Club at DC Ranch in January. One of the first orders of business for NVMs will be to elect members of the Ranch Association Board of Directors.

Neighborhood projects focus on community living Several neighborhood building projects are nearing completion in DC Ranch following a strong year of building starts and home sales in 2016

A new village within a village welcomes its first residents Is it the home or the lifestyle? When a buyer starts to envision their new home, so much of what they dream about is the lifestyle that the home will provide. For Peter and Linda Niederman, the journey to find a second home in Arizona started with

the search for a lifestyle that fits this new phase of their lives.

Peter recently sold his real estate company in Denver and he and his wife were looking for a warmer climate to enjoy part of the year.

“We were looking for a community similar to how we live in Cherry Hills Village,” said Peter Niederman.

Some friends had a home in DC Ranch and introduced them to the community and they thought, “This is it. This is wonderful!”

Once they identified DC Ranch as their destination, the Niedermans

started looking for the right home for their lifestyle. The Village at Silverleaf—a new enclave of quaint villas and cottages adjacent to the Silverleaf Club—seemed to bring together the elements they most wanted. The home is within easy walking distance of all their social and recreational activities.

“We don’t have to leave the neighborhood. We can grab a meal and not have to drive, said Niederman. “We can have friends over, take them to the club for spa, golf, athletics or dining.”

The Niedermans credit Mike Sweeney, Silverleaf Realty’s broker, with assisting them in finding the right home on

the perfect lot. They selected an “end cap” lot adjacent to the driving range with views of the mountains and the Club. The couple then set out to create their dream home with the Cullum Homes team.

“During the first meeting (with Rod Cullum and Don Ziebell, the team behind The Village at Silverleaf), we started to tell them how we wanted to live our lives and use this home,” Niederman recalled.

The couple recalled a dynamic and creative process. “Don pulled out a sketch pad, and said, ‘We can do this, we can do this,’ and he created custom

features for us. He was getting excited about what they could do,” said Niederman.

World renowned for his design quality and creativity, Ziebell counts the Silverleaf Clubhouse itself as one of his most honored projects. The craftsmanship and interior design of the Club is now reflected in the design of The Village residences.

The land and building were funded by the Smith family through the Arizona Community Foundation as a tribute to their daughter, Brynne, who died tragically at the age of 25 in 2013.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL SHELTER As soon as you walk into the building, you’ll realize Foothills isn’t like shelters you may have visited in the past.

With a soaring 18-foot ceiling that lets in an abundance of natural light, the lobby has an expansive feeling.

Visitors begin interacting visually with the animals right away—two glass enclosed pet areas make it easy to see the furry pals. There are two “meet and greet” rooms, eight dogs suites and four community cat rooms, plus two small dog runs in front and a 1,000 square foot enclosed dog park in the rear.

A 1,500-square-foot flexible space with shade sails is a perfect place for events, dog training, children’s camps and neighbors to gather. High tech systems include industrial air scrubbers, a fresh air ventilation system, and automated cleaning routines that make it easier for volunteers to optimize their efforts.

And there are lots of volunteers: nearly 19,000 volunteer hours were logged at Foothill’s new site, its previous location on Pima, and at the adjacent retail boutique, plus at many offsite locations and fundraisers. Direct contact with cats and dogs accounted for more than 10,000 of those hours, a huge commitment of love.

At the Pima location, the boutique will enjoy a welcome expansion into part of the former shelter space.

The 2,200 square foot store, staffed almost entirely by volunteers, is the shelter’s primary source of revenue.

The building went up quickly; ground was broken in April 2016 and the dedication took place in early December. An estimated 90 percent of the furnishings and artwork were donated and nearly all of the businesses involved in construction gave back to the project.

It sells clothing, furniture, housewares, accessories, jewelry and more.

Stop by to donate or find some interesting treasures. The old shelter’s eight kennels will be upgraded and used for intake of new homeless animals, which come to Foothills from the Maricopa Animal Shelter each week.

Kitchen on the Street provides weekly Bags of Hope for children to ensure they have food on the weekends.

The bags are filled with individual portions of shelf-stable foods like pasta, fruit snacks, and granola bars.

About 1,500 kids in Phoenix and the West Valley receive the bags; 85 percent are under age 10.

DC Ranch Gives has chosen this as the first group service project for 2017, an opportunity to join with family and neighbors to give back in a meaningful way.

Welcoming a new DC Ranch Men’s Club

T

he men of DC Ranch will soon have a club of their own. While the DC Ranch Women’s Club has been a popular group since 2012, two residents—Gene Press and Steven Kressler—decided it was high time for the men to get their own group going.

Working with Recreation Coordinator Anjelica Giardino, they initiated a plan to create the club, with the goal of “maximizing the DC Ranch experience, meeting our neighbors, and sharing the beauties and fun of Arizona,” according to Kressler.

Survey results were still being populated after this publication, so some results may vary.

The next step is an organizational meeting in April to discuss how to set up the group and start planning events for the fall. All interested men are encouraged to attend the planning meeting—stay tuned for more information. If you’d like to get involved or have an idea to share, contact Steven A. McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Citizen Scientists

T

he McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute—the research center of the Conservancy—has developed a unique model of citizen science that many organizations statewide seek to emulate because of its huge success. The program trains Conservancy stewards to take charge of scientific projects and manage them on behalf of scientific partners who set up the research protocols.

While citizen science is not a new concept, the idea of citizen scientists

leading studies, collecting results, and publishing their findings is a unique model. Conservancy citizen scientists receive training from scientific partners who explain the questions to be explored, research techniques, and data collection requirements.

Citizen scientists are currently assisting with a mule deer collaring project led by the Arizona Game & Fish Department (AZGFD). They helped AZGFD place 32 radio collars on mule deer last year at various locations throughout the McDowell Sonoran Preserve to get a better understanding

Conservancy citizen scientists conducted geological investigations of the Preserve and published their results in the Arizona Geological Survey. Other citizen scientists have been setting traps and collecting ground-dwelling arthropods for several years, adding to the research base of the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research program, which is studying urban ecology and its effects on wildlife and habitat.

Helen Rowe, Field Institute director, explains the importance of the citizen science effort: “Our use of citizen science has two broad benefits. First, we can conduct a multitude of research projects relevant to the management of the Preserve at a low cost. And second, we can engage members of society in the discovery and dissemination of important scientific results.”

Certified citizen scientists digitally mapped the Preserve, a process rarely entrusted to volunteers. Another group is collecting data on the seasonal
