Stephanie Fullerton is no stranger to success. She founded Fullerton Financial Planning in 2004 and in 12 years built it into a multimillion dollar success. She is also a respected author, and hosts her own radio and television show.

A LEGACY OF HONESTY, INTEGRITY, SERVICE Family law firm serves generations of Scottsdale clients

I

t almost sounds like a novel that’s too good to be true---a woman well-known for her brutal honesty sharing a law practice with her 93-yearold grandfather, from whom she has learned so much about the law, integrity and customer service. But it’s real life and it’s Michelle Perkins’ story.

Perkins and her grandfather, C.D. Owens, are the partners at Owens & Perkins (“O&P”) in Scottsdale. Her parents are not attorneys, but Perkins was attracted to the profession because of her grandfather and the opportunity to help people. She graduated from ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law in 1994. Jobs for lawyers were scarce then, she said, but she was able to move into an office in her grandfather’s building.

Two years later the two became business partners and a year after that Perkins became the Managing Partner, in charge of all aspects of running the practice. Today the firm focuses primarily on family law, but the practice also includes wills and trusts, probate and criminal law.

Perkins considers her two greatest achievements in the past 20 years to be these: during and in the aftermath of the Great Recession, none of the lawyers or support staff were laid off or fired; and no one on the O&P team has ever missed an event in their child’s life because of work. “We have a family culture,” Perkins said. “We don’t want anyone to miss those special moments.”

Her firm’s greatest accomplishments?

First, she said, its longevity. Next

year, the firm will celebrate 50 years of a continuously run law firm in Scottsdale. “When C.D. opened his firm in 1967, there were only six lawyers in Scottsdale,” Perkins said. “He loves continuing to serve the needs of the Scottsdale community.”

Second, she said, is the decades-long relationship with their clients and their families. “We’re on our third generation with many of our clients, and what we have is ‘generations representing generations.’ We pride ourselves on being there for our clients during the most difficult time in their lives,” Perkins said.

Her clients appreciate that. On Avvo. com, a site that independently rates lawyers and helps people locate a lawyer in their area, Perkins has glowing reviews, and not a single negative one. “We saw a need to create a solution to the devastating prescription drug dependency issue,” Orchard said. “Prescription drug overdoses, specifically from opiate pain relievers, have become an epidemic in the United States. Overdoses due to prescription opiate pain relievers were declining in Arizona from 2010 to 2013 but increased between 2013 and 2014.”

Currently Arizona has the sixth highest rate in the country for prescription drug misuse and drug overdose deaths, she said. “Futures have been ruined by a simple prescription written for legitimate pain, by a physician they trust, and then that prescription was renewed and refilled far beyond what it was intended for. A short time later, they are dependent on that prescription and their life is not a happy one.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES Raised more than half million for high school and college athletes

J

anie Riddle hasn’t always been a restaurant owner. For a decade before establishing Valle Luna Mexican Restaurants, Riddle worked as a public relations professional in health care and in organizations that support communications experts.

“After 10 years, I exercised my entrepreneurial spirit and immersed myself full-time in a new family venture—Valle Luna Mexican Restaurants—where my PR and marketing expertise, organizational and leadership skills and determination would ultimately result in Valle Luna becoming a Phoenix/Chandler restaurant landmark,” Riddle said. The company’s mission statement, she said, includes a pledge to be a generous and giving community partner, and a trusted and valued corporate citizen.

“You must have passion about what you are doing both in business and in life,” Riddle said. “The walls of fame at all three Valle Luna locations exhibit what giving back is all about with more than 400 sponsor plaques. At Valle Luna we support our employees as they volunteer and give back. Being a part of their goals is rewarding.” Valle Luna employees participate as a team in the annual Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society and donate toys to needy children every year at Christmas time.

Riddle herself has a long history of volunteering. In the past 30 years, she has served as a two-time past president of the North Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year.

She has served on the board of directors for Horses’ Help, a therapeutic and recreational agency serving the special needs population by providing activities to help them break through physical, cognitive and emotional barriers.

In the mid-1990s, Riddle began volunteering with the Fiesta Bowl and was named Fiesta Bowl Volunteer of the Year in 2003.

She became a member of the National Football Foundation’s Valley of the Sun Chapter in 1994 and joined the board in the early 2000s. In 2007, she became the president of the organization and will finish her 10-year term in May of next year. “We have raised more than half a million dollars in scholarship monies for high school and college football athletes while recognizing more than 1,000 scholar athletes,” Riddle said. Riddle and her husband Bill, to whom she’s been married for 45 years, were recognized in 2000 with the Chapter’s Leadership Award.

She has won numerous other awards, including the Sam Walton (Wal-Mart) “Business Person of the Year” and Today’s Arizona Woman Magazine’s “Golden Heart of Business Award,” based on adherence to the philosophies of caring about business practices and ethics, giving back to the community and nurturing employee and client relationships.

Her advice for women who want to be entrepreneurs? “Dream big, set your goals and reach high. Remember how you got to where you are today and never forget the people, family and friends who provided the support and guidance along the way. Always make the time to do the right thing. Make a difference in life.” ■
