POSITION YOURSELF FOR COMFORT

Phoenix airport once boasted a fly-in wedding chapel for ‘aerial elopers’ DONNA REINER SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC | AZCENTRAL.COM

Much like modern ski-in and ski-out resorts, Sky Harbor once was the home to several innovative fly-in concepts. For several years, it featured First National Bank’s fly-in center, the first in the country, which catered to businessmen and cattlemen with small private aircraft. But years before that, there was a flyin chapel. No, people did not actually fly into the chapel. Rather, they would take a flight from anywhere and come to sunny Arizona. Of course, they would first need to make arrangements to have a minister or justice of the peace to conduct the service in case they needed to make a quick turnaround.

pulpit, a bell in the “tower” and a cross on top. So everyone stood and the wedding parties were generally very small.

Idea conceived

Seldom used

But why was there such a place at the airport in the first place? When the fly-in chapel was conceived in the late 1930s by the Phoenix Junior Chamber of Commerce, it was seen as a unique promotion to entice “aerial elopers.” At the time, there was a three-day waiting period to get a marriage license, which included having a blood test, in California, and Las Vegas was not yet perceived as the “quickie” wedding spot. And so this publicity gimmick should have appealed to Hollywood celebrities. That was not the case, but still, it did attract some Californians of lesser-known status. Donald Novis was an NBC broadcasting personality in California, and he arranged for KTAR to air his marriage in 1938, which included live music played by a Spanish orchestra. But please note, this was not a chapel where guests came in and sat down. Try to picture an archway constructed in an adobe Spanish Mission style. That’s actually all it was, along with a

Located near what was originally Terminal West (Terminal 1), the chapel served as the marriage site for approximately 45 couples during its short life, many of whom actually lived in the Valley. Some of the names of the early couples were engraved in a copper plaque that was attached to the structure, and Don Novis’ and his brother’s names were there. But it is unclear where this plaque may be now. One oddity is that the first couple married in this open-air site drove to the airport rather than flying. As the airport grew, the seldom-used chapel was finally removed, although the bell was retained and placed on display. For a long time, the bell was the only visible reminder of this fly-in chapel. Recently, it was removed by the Phoenix Airport Museum and is being stored.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making mass-shooting threats against a Waste Management facility twice since March, Phoenix police said Tuesday. Jarrell Stephens is suspected of posting a threat of a mass shooting against the Waste Management Facility at 2625 W. Grandview Road on March 7, prompting an investigation and spurring upgraded security protocols at the facility, police said. Phoenix police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the incident. Police said Stephens is suspected of making another online threat last

Wednesday, including a list of names of employees at the facility in his post. On the same day, police responded to the facility after receiving reports of shots fired there, Phoenix police Sgt. Vince Lewis said. Officers arrived and soon determined the call was a hoax and no shots were fired, but the incident prompted Waste Management officials to again enhance their security measures. Police identified Stephens as the suspect involved in both incidents on Thursday and he was located and arrested without incident, Lewis said. Stephens was booked on suspicion of creating a hoax, threats, computer tampering and harassment. He also was booked for interfering with judicial proceedings in an unrelated incident.

How do we explain the phenomenon of Donald Trump? I understand why he was elected, but I’m baffled that he has chosen to govern (or

name one positive personality trait they think he possesses, they can’t. They explain that when he lashes out at his critics, this is somehow a virtue. When did vile, repulsive behavior become an admirable attribute? When we talk about all the things about Trump that many of us find troubling, I would like to suggest one other characteristic that may be most concerning. During his campaign, he promised many things, including “Making America Great Again” and building a wall and making Mexico pay for it. I would like to suggest he is also a conman! America is not greater under his watch. It is diminished in the eyes of the world, due largely to his dishonesty and lack of credibility. I don’t think the wall will ever be built, but even if it is, Mexico won’t be paying for it. If you fell for that line, you got conned. But “Trump Believers” were conned bigtime by his creation of the concept of fake news. He would have us believe ANY criticism of him is untrue and fake. His vilification of the media is appalling. I don’t think he personally believes that, but it’s part of his con. He can dish it out, but he can’t take it. The recent dust-up over Donald Jr.’s Russian contact may, ultimately, lead to the president’s downfall. It’s going to expose all of his financial dealings with shady Russian characters and will reveal his indebtedness to Russian banks. This is the real reason he won’t release his taxes. He doesn’t want us to know just how entrenched he is with them. And, of course, he wanted to compromise then-FBI Director James Comey. When that didn’t work, he fired him on false pretenses. When you become president, your life becomes an open book, the last thing he wants. The only thing that’s come true is his promise to shake things up. Little did we know how awful that would be!

not govern). Trump is many things to many people. If you’re a supporter, you’d like to believe he’s going to shake things up and make our government more effective and efficient. You believe his business background will bring new ideas and solutions to an environment that’s existed for decades. If Trump could get out of his own way, that might be a possibility, but that will never happen. For reasons none of us knows or understands, he’s shown over and over again that he’s incapable or unwilling to control himself. It raises the question, what drives him to do and say things that completely undermine his agenda? Why can’t he focus on the job he was elected to do? His need to lash out against his critics overrides and dominates everything he does and says. Rather than addressing his critics head-on with substantive rebuttal, he created the myth of fake news as an excuse for his shortcomings. Some suggest he suffers from some type of personality disorder. That seems like a reasonable explanation, but we’ll most likely never know. I’m one who does not believe in him or support him or his agenda. As a lifelong moderate Republican, I am appalled, shocked, disappointed and embarrassed by his behavior and conduct. Trump was presented with a wonderful opportunity to make meaningful changes and in six short months, he’s done just the opposite. He’s demonstrated that he’s a bully, a misogynist and narcissistic. He’s also arrogant, crude, obnoxious, reckless and xenoDoug Hopkins lives in Chandler. phobic. When I ask friends who support him to

AZ Real Estate COOL HOME

A custom house inspired by mountain views MICHELLE BEAVER SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC

Kevin and Stacy Morgan were living out of state when their custom home in Peoria was being built. That may sound stressful, but the Morgans actually enjoyed the process. Kevin took monthly trips from Texas to check the progress and was exhilarated every time as the house took greater shape. “I was like a little kid at Christmas every trip, once a month,” he said. The 3,300-square-foot home is nestled into desert mountains near 91st Avenue and Westwing Parkway. The house has three bedrooms, 3.5 baths and an office. The design and building process took two years. Kevin, who is in sales leadership, and Stacy, a teacher, raised their kids in Dallas and in May moved back to their home state of Arizona. Their daughter, 21, and son, 18, no longer live at home, leaving the Morgans with an empty nest. A big, beautiful, empty nest with outstanding desert views. “The goal was to maximize the views we had, because that’s the beauty of the lot,” Kevin said. “We designed the house so each window had a specific view.”

PET OF THE WEEK

Cheez-It is an adorable 11-lb. lug An adorable cross-eyed expression is just one of the features that outgoing and sweet British shorthair Cheez-It possesses. (Or maybe he’s just staring intensely at you, begging for a home.) Either way, he sure is a cute, one-of-a-kind kitty. This sturdy, 11-pound lug of love also boasts a long tail that’s always hooked at the end (a universal gesture of friendliness in the cat world), and hamster-like cheeks that make him appear to either be holding his breath or have a mouth full of food. Cheez-It got his name for a reason — it was a couple of cheesy, toasted crackers that lured the hungry, overheated and dehydrated stray into the arms of the emergency animal medical technician who rescued him. Now, when Cheez-it hears a rustling a plastic bag, he assumes you’re munching on his favorite treat and he runs over to you, anxiously meowing, for a snack. Cheez-It hasn’t stopped purring since he arrived at the Arizona Humane Society back in June, and his affectionate head-bonks, thundering purr and charm-

ing ways quickly win everyone’s friendship. The easygoing 5-year-old is good with other cats, and with a slow introduction will likely coexist with a unobtrusive canine roommate. Meet Cheez-It at the Arizona Humane Society, 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee is $40 and includes his neuter surgery, vaccinations and a microchip. However, all dog and cat adoption fees, including Cheez-It’s, will be waived July 22 only. For more information, call 602-997-7585 and ask for animal number A560646. Previous pet: Cleo, the cat, was adopted and lives in Phoenix.

Cool Home Continued from Page 11

living here, I probably would have been (at the building site) every day driving them nuts and probably wanting to make changes all the time. This arrangement allowed it to take shape without me nitpicking.” The Morgans wanted a one-story house, since they rarely used the second floor of their Dallas home. “I’m not old now, but as we get older, we don’t want to take as many stairs,” Kevin said. The couple also wanted the house to be as close as possible to Flagstaff and Lake Pleasant. That’s why they chose Peoria instead of north Scottsdale or Fountain Hills, areas they also considered.

Dream home In respect to the concept of a “dream home,” Stacy said she “could think of a thousand features I would have in a dream home, but that doesn’t make it

necessarily feasible, homey or practical, so what we built was something we felt would fit our needs as we start a new empty-nest phase.” Stacy’s favorite feature of the home is the eat-in dining table built into the kitchen island. It’s also a crowd pleaser, she said. She found a picture of a builtin table she liked and showed it to a cabinet maker who emulated the design. “He built it as an area that made eating together more comfortable and entertaining much easier without compromising counter space,” Stacy said. “In fact, I have more cabinets and drawers than I can use because of this style island. Other than that, I can’t complain about the ability to open the entire glass door and slide it into the wall on our cooler days and create a great indoor/outdoor entertaining space.” As for Kevin, his favorite part of the property is the view, his second favorite is the RV garage, and the backyard is his third favorite. The Morgans’ former home in Dallas was on an acre lot and had a movie theater, but this house is more of their dream home. “Absolutely, this is my dream house,” Kevin said. “This is it.”
