A Phoenix man is suspected of using fake authorization codes for prepaid debit cards to con retailers out of nearly $6,4 00 worth of televisions, golf clubs and lotAdam Alex tery tickets, according to Miller Phoenix police.

Phoenix police said they arrested 27year-old Adam Alex Miller at his home near 51st Avenue and Thunderbird Road on March 6.

Miller is accused of using a fraudulent code to activate a “forced sale option” on a Vanilla pre-paid debit card with no money loaded on it to purchase items from various retailers around Phoenix, police said, in court records.

Miller is accused of purchasing two televisions worth about $1,200, golf clubs worth about $600 and $4 ,4 50 worth of lottery tickets in ÿve separate transactions from August 2017 until as recently as Feb. 9, according to a prob-

able-cause statement submitted to a court by police after his arrest.

The ÿve businesses defrauded were Jerry’s Golf Balls, ARCO AM/PM, Valley Wide TV Repair, Valero, and Queens Market. Victims identiÿed Miller as the man in surveillance videos based on photo ID or a picture lineup given by police, according to the records.

Miller allegedly used this scheme to buy, or attempt to buy, over $79,000 of merchandise, the records state.

According to court documents, the “forced sale option” is supposed to be used for a customer who is making a purchase for a signiÿcant dollar amount with the pre-loaded card. The merchant calls the bank and receives a one-time code to allow the sale to go through.

However, Miller is accused of giving the the code himself to the merchant or pretended to call the bank himself and get the code, according to the records.

Many cashiers and business owners are unaware of this scheme, police said.

Miller is facing charges of fraudulent schemes and theft.

With a new mobile app, Arizonans can now help monitor and preserve the state’s lakes, streams and rivers.

The Water Watch App allows users to input their observations about wildlife, pollution and water flow, snap a few photos and share the information with the Arizona Department of Water Quality, adding to the department’s understanding of the status of the state’s most precious natural resources.

“We compile data from all rivers, streams and lakes in Arizona, and then it rolls up into something called an assessment,” said Meghan Smart, citizen scientist coordinator and scientist at the department. “We basically try and look at as many sites as we can per year to make sure (they are) healthy and environmentally sound and then try to identify pollution sources to ÿx.”

Monitoring the state’s bodies of waters is time-consuming, and enlisting the help of residents who already are out enjoying nature makes sense, she said.

“We have so many dedicated people in the state that are passionate. They care so much,” Smart said. “So if we can give them the tools to help protect and collect water quality data, it really helps our mission and does more good for the state.”

The app, available for cellphone or tablet, has a geolocation feature. It was developed as part of Arizona Water Watch, a program that aims to educate the public about water quality. That program also trains residents to be “citizen scientists” and sends them out to collect physical water samples.

Nicholas Balik of Prescott volunteers as a citizen scientist for one of 20 groups across the state. Each group has two to 20 people, and participants range in age from 9 to almost 90. ADEQ scientists have trained them to test bodies of water for pH and temperature.

High-school student Jordan Harb, flanked by Arizona lawmakers and a representative of the Schools Board Association, delivered a gun-control message on Monday: “We want our lives taken into account.”

Harb, a junior at Mountain View High School in Mesa, urged the Legislature to enact gun-control measures in the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 students and faculty members.

As Harb spoke at a news conference at the state Capitol, supporters wielded signs reading “We Deserve Better.”

Reps. Randy Friese and Daniel Hernandez, both Tucson Democrats, Allie Bones of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, and Lawrence Robinson, president-elect of the Arizona School Boards Association, were among those in attendance.

The Republican-dominated Legislature, noted for its pro-gun stance, has stymied Democratic e“ orts to pass guncontrol laws, deeming them unnecessary, even as the conservative Florida Legislature recently raised the legal age for gun purchases to 21 and authorized arming some teachers.

Hernandez, who was a 20-year-old intern for Rep. Gabrielle Gi“ ords in 2011 when she was gravely wounded by a lone gunman, spoke of holding Gi“ ords’ head after she was shot while meeting constituents in a Safeway parking lot near Tucson.

“We deserve better,” he said. “No

child should have to go to school in fear that at any moment they may be shot for merely going to school. No person should have to go to a grocery store and fear that at any moment they could be shot.”

Hernandez and others called for more mental-health funds and universal background checks to prevent certain people, such as those with serious mental illness or a history of domestic violence, from buying guns.

Friese, a trauma surgeon who treated Gi“ ords and other victims of the shooting, which killed a federal judge and ÿve other people, has made gun control one of his main issues.

His work brings an intimate understanding of gun violence.

“I see their families, I have to tell them their loved ones passed away,” Friese said. “It’s a di’cult thing to do, especially when we shouldn’t have to.”

He said he thinks change is coming in the wake of the Parkland shooting as teenagers across the country organize to push for gun control.

“I’m disappointed that it takes school shooting after school shooting to get here, but I’m also grateful that we’re at a point where we’re making progress,” Friese said.

Speakers at the news conference also called on constituents to join the movement for gun control, either by participating in marches or making phone calls to legislators to make their views known.

Harb urged Arizonans to reach out to legislators and “demand that our lives be put ÿrst.”

Those golf balls that land in water hazards? It turns out many are brought back to life.

An estimated 300 million golf balls are lost or discarded in the United States every year, according to research by the Danish Golf Union. Because it can take golf balls 100 to 1,000 years to decompose, scientists say, they present a major environmental risk.

A number of businesses have started to collect old golf balls and turn them into proÿt. The most common way to ÿnd success in the golf-ball recycling world is to employ divers to scavenge the balls from the lakes on and around golf courses.

John Weynand is one of those divers.

The Valley resident has traveled across the country to recover balls, visiting about 200 courses a year.

“I have a course schedule for the day,” said Weynand, a diver who started right out of high school and has been in the industry the past nine years. “I’ll show up to a golf course and talk to a head pro or general manager. I conÿrm that I’m there and I grab a cart and go to the ÿrst pond that I think will be a good one and hop into it.”

Weynand, 28, averages 200 to 300 balls per pond but said many variables can a“ ect the number of balls in a lake, from the season to the location to whether they came from a left-handed or right-handed shot.

Dangers can accompany diving, especially in Florida. In the late 1990s, a rookie diver in Tampa “spent several hours stuck on the bottom, pinned down by a gator’s amorous advance” during mating season, according to Golf.com.

In Arizona, alligators are not a concern, but Weynand acknowledged there could be other things in the water. Like ÿsh.

“Bass are very territorial. They don’t want you around, so they’ll just stare at you the whole time,” Weynand said, “If you are in a clear pond, you can see them. They’ll be a few feet away just staring at you and doing what ÿsh do.

Golf balls often have an extended life, even after they end up in a water hazard. Many are recycled and resold.

Weynand has spent his entire diving career with Desert Golf Ball Recycling, a sister company of Sunshine Golf, a Valley-based golf-ball recovery company that has contracts with more than 1,200 golf courses.

Most of their business comes in a seven-month span, said John Brown, operations manager for Sunshine Golf ’s plant in Mesa.

“From March through about September,” Brown said, “that’s when we get probably 60 to 70 percent of what we process.”

After arriving at the plant, Brown said, the balls are washed and sorted.

After that, they go through a grader that will assign a letter, from A to D. They’re then packed and either sold to the public from Sunshine Golf or to other wholesalers.

Lee Evanko, the co-owner of Sunshine Golf and Desert Golf Recycling, has been in the industry for more than 30 years and has watched her company grow rapidly.

“We have expanded into 20 other states and pull in about 10 million balls a year,” Evanko said.

Sunshine not only sells balls across all 50 states, she said, also overseas to Holland, Australia and New Zealand.

With hundreds of millions of balls lost every year, and plenty of bad golfers to maintain that number, the golf-ball recycling industry will remain a‘oat for years to come.

Parents and their children sat in a classroom at the Scottsdale Gun Club, just past rows of rifles, ammo and novelty T-shirts, including one with a picture of a T-rex and the caption “Small Arms Dealer.”

In a country where studies show an average of 19 children are killed or injured by a gun every day, these ÿrearmowning parents are intent on keeping family members safe.

On this recent Saturday, instructor Ryan Arnold provided tips and advice on how to introduce their children to shooting when they’re ready.

“A large percentage of the American family, American homes, do have ÿrearms in them,” Arnold said. “Respecting the ÿrearm, treating it safely, just like you do anything else in your house that could potentially be dangerous, that’s very important.”

Firearm deaths of Arizona children increased by 29 percent from 2015 to 2016, and 100 percent of those deaths are preventable, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Part of prevention is taking children

to a professional to learn to shoot, Arnold said, no matter a parent’s experience level.

Elizabeth and Hagop Harutiunian took their 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter to the safety class in part, Hagop Harutiunian said, because he believes strongly in Second Amendment rights.

“People need to know a gun sitting on a table is not going to kill anybody,” Harutiunian said. “The person that picks it up and pulls the trigger, that’s the person that’s going to kill somebody. Not the gun.”

Still, Harutiunian said, the age limit for owning a gun should be raised to 21 from 18 and gun buyers should undergo more thorough background checks.

He also wants his children to stay away from the guns he keeps in the house.

“I want him to learn more about safety so he doesn’t touch my guns,” Harutiunian said of his son. “I want him to be calm, collected and be able to tell me, ‘Hey Dad, your gun’s laying in the middle of the co‘ ee table’ or something.

“I want him to know what to do, and I think as much as I’m teaching him, I want him to learn more from the instructors, because they know more than I do.”

Question: I was really excited when I got offered admission at a very selective college through its early decision plan.

But my enthusiasm for going there has waned because all of my friends will be going to the state college.

I know that I signed an agreement saying I would attend that school; however, I want to back out of it now. Is the agreement to attend that school legally binding? Is there any way that I can get out of attending this school?

Answer: Colleges can have other acceptance programs than regular admission. One of them is early decision, in which students apply to one college in November and can be offered or not offered admission as early as December.

The advantage lies in knowing earlier than most of their classmates where they will be going to college, as well as taking the stress out of waiting to see where they are accepted.

You signed an agreement to go to the early decision school if you were offered admission and also to retract applications at other colleges where you may have applied. Although an early decision is not legally binding, colleges do consider it a ÿrm commitment, and there can be unpleasant outcomes that will not let you attend other schools where you have been admitted.

At this point, there are a few things that you can do if you do not want to attend the school where you were offered early decision admission. You can start by talking to the admissions o‘ce; some schools will let you out of the agreement.

If the ÿnancial aid package the school offers makes it economically unsound for you to attend the school, most will release you from the early decision agreement.

You have two other options to consider: You can attend the school and take advantage of what originally attracted you to it. If, after attending the school, you still feel it is not right for you, there is always the possibility of transferring to another school.

Students need to remember that it is very important to select the right acceptance program when applying to college. Unless you are dead-certain that a school is the one for you, you are likely to be better served by an early action program that will let you apply to several schools and ÿnd out which ones will admit you early. This program does not require you to attend a school if you are offered admission.

Q: I just read your article addressing a third-grade student’s problem understanding what you describe as “content area vocabulary.” One cause of this problem that is often overlooked when a child has a problem like this is the possibility that the child may have a hearing impairment. A hearing test would indicate any hearing impairments the child might have.

A: Whenever a child is having great di‘culty in an area at school, many avenues need to be investigated to determine why this is happening.

Duet March Volunteer Orientation: Looking for a way to help your neighbors? Duet, a nonprofit, interfaith organization that promotes health and well-being through a broad range of services, is looking for volunteers. The organization matches isolated, homebound adults with local, compassionate volunteers who help them with services such as grocery shopping, drive them to medical appointments, minor home repairs and even provide friendly visits.

Volunteers can choose when and where they’d like to serve. It’s flexible and fun!

As closely tied as the Pennell family’s house is to the birth of Phoenix, it feels nothing like the Arizona homes Phoenix residents have come to expect.

At 103 years old, the Arts and Crafts bungalow in the Roosevelt Historic Neighborhood is practically prehistoric in terms of Phoenix-area structures, and it reminds its owners of its age at just about every turn.

“If you make it to 100 in Phoenix, you deserve to have a birthday,” Angel Jannasch-Pennell said of the house, which was feted a few years ago as part of the neighborhood’s home tour.

Hooks are still visible on the home’s front porch, used in its early days for outdoor sleeping when it was too stuffy to sleep inside. A slender, indoor catwalk above the front door offered an airy sleeping space as well, just under a window to catch the evening breeze. And a pint-size dumbwaiter on the second “oor , used now to store cleaning products, harkens to a different era.

When the Pennells happened upon it about 20 years ago when they met a friend for lunch, it had been used as a

group home.

“We were being totally nosy. We weren’t buying a house,” Angel said of their curiosity that day. “This was deÿnitely a neighborhood in transition.”

“It’s such a dark hallway otherwise,” Angel said of the slim walkway that connects the kitchen to the bathroom.

The Pennells were beneÿciaries of serendipity a few times, as with the tub and a perfect-ÿt, built-in piece that was discovered curbside and required nothing but a little TLC. But they also had to work to preserve the home’s integrity, from waiting for the perfect dining ÿxture made from hammered copper and brass, to acquiring the petite three-foot tub they needed for the second full bath upstairs.

“I searched hard for that one, because that’s all the room we had,” Angel said of the dainty bathroom, which once served as part of a massive master closet that stretched the length of the home.

One of the most consistent features throughout the Pennell home, besides an extensive collection of local artwork, are the crystal doorknobs.

Angel Pennell’s childhood home in Indiana had crystal doorknobs, one of the features to which she was emotionally attached. So she made sure they graced every door in their Phoenix home, allowing for a purple variation on her tween daughter’s door.

“I just love those crystal knobs,” she said. “That was my thing.”

The back of the Pennell home, accessed through a spring-loaded screen door o“ the kitchen or by a pair of French doors in the family room, mirrors the spacious feel of the home’s interior.

An elevated concrete patio runs the length of the home and leads to a grassy yard and a 500-square-foot studio guesthouse that Angel said is “usually occupied.”

The family of four spends evenings out back when the weather is nice, enjoying a home that comes with so many stories.

Re‘ecting on the work it took to get the home to where it is from where it was, Angel said she knows it is where her family was supposed to be.

“It was deÿnitely my calling,” she said.

Question: I’ve read that the Food and Drug Administration is going to make it harder for people to buy Imodium. This is bad news for people like me, with irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhea).

I have controlled my symptoms for years with one Imodium tablet per day.

Without it, I need to be near a bathroom within 20 minutes of eating, and I need to stay seated for 10 to 20 minutes. Not fun.

This has been a cheap and easily available drug for IBS-D sufferers. I guess I need to stock up now, before it becomes both expensive and hard to ÿnd.

Answer: Loperamide (Imodium A-D) controls diarrhea by slowing the muscular contractions of the lower digestive tract. The agency wants to limit overthe-counter dosage packs to eight pills, enough to treat acute diarrhea for two days.

Some people have been using high doses of loperamide to ease opioid withdrawal symptoms; others have abused the drug in an effort to get high. It takes such high doses that people may experience irregular heart rhythms or cardiac arrest.

We have heard from many readers who suffer from chronic diarrhea. They rely on loperamide to be able to work or travel. Like you, they worry that the new regulations could raise the price and complicate their lives.

Q: Several years ago, I developed asthma. I really thought that I would die from it one day. If I was late with my inhaler, I would start to wheeze.

Fast-forward to the following story.

One day, I saw the physician assistant at my doctor’s o‘ce. I told her that I thought I might have a low-grade thrush infection in my mouth. She prescribed an anti-fungal oral troche. In less than 24 hours, I was off my steroid inhalers, never to need them again. I have been symptom-free for three years.

A: The underlying causes of asthma can be di‘cult to diagnose. Many peo-

ple have breathing di‘culties due to an allergic reaction. In some cases, the wheezing can be triggered by a fungal infection (Journal of Asthma, September 2016). Anti-fungal medication can be helpful in situations like yours.

Other research suggests that some hard-to-treat asthma could be related to a chronic bacterial infection in the airways (Immunology and Allergy Clinics of North America, August 2016). A placebo-controlled trial found that antibiotic treatment with azithromycin helped patients with persistent asthma (Lancet, Aug. 12, 2017).

Q: You advised a reader that brandname Viagra (sildenaÿl), which costs $65 to $80 per pill, is available from Greenstone as an authorized generic at half the price. It also can be obtained from legitimate Canadian pharmacies for $14 to $20 per pill.

Generic sildenaÿl has been available in the U.S. at much lower cost. I have been getting sildenaÿl for $1.24 per pill from a local warehouse-club pharmacy.

These 20-mg pills probably are generic Revatio. One pill is equal to 20 mg of Viagra; two or three pills ($2.48 or $3.72) is approximately equal to a 50-mg Viagra.

This medication is very affordable and works exactly as well as brand-name Viagra.

A: Sildenaÿl is prescribed for erectile dysfunction as Viagra. It also is prescribed as Revatio to treat pulmonary hypertension, a condition that can lead to heart failure. Not every man would want such a serious health problem on his medical record. Nonetheless, you are correct that this generic drug is quite affordable.

Teen wants to move out, but parents fear violence Ask Linda Linda Cohen Guest columnist

Dear Linda: I’m a high school senior and graduating in May. I’ve been accepted at some top schools and have to make a decision as to where I will go ASAP. My parents are stalling about sending in the tuition and I’m really mad at them. They supported me in applying to these schools and now they want me to go to a local state school in our town and commute from home.

It’s not about the money, because I asked them that question. I’m the youngest of three, and my bother has graduated three years ago and my sister will be ÿnished with college in the next 18 months.

I ÿnally had a talk with my mom and dad last night, and it comes down to my safety.

My parents are very worried about all the violence at schools, and they told me that the times are di“ erent than when my brother and sister started college.

I want that “living away from home experience” and the independence that comes with it, and want to meet new people from di“ erent places and backgrounds.

They don’t seem to understand how disappointing this will be for me.

They can’t keep me in a bubble and I know they want what’s best for me.

What can I do, if anything, to make them see the situation through my eyes?

You are the baby in the family and perhaps have been overly protected, and if there is a big age di“ erence between your siblings and you, that adds to their “hovering” attitude.

You are absolutely correct when you say that they can’t keep you in a bubble of safety.

I also feel that this conversation might have happened early on in the academic year and not after your college acceptances came through.

A school adviser or a teacher who is mentoring to you might be one suggestion. A family talk with someone you trust and your parents respect might just provide the voice of reason that they need to hear. This also applies to any close family friends, relatives and clergy.

If all else fails, then a counseling session might be helpful.

Have another chat with them before planning any of the suggestions that I o“ ered. Be calm and clear and choose a time when you’ll all be relaxed.

I know this is an emotionally charged situation for you but it’s best discussed without anger so all parties “hear” one another. I hope this works in your favor and best of luck.

Willowbrook Performing Arts Concert

Series: The Desert Brass Band, under the direction of Charles Musgrave, will present Sounds of Spring, Sunday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m. at Willowbrook United Methodist Church.
