Pioneer’s estate to become destination Laura Gómez

The home of a Goodyear tire executive who helped put the West Valley on the map is slated to become a destination, with plans to turn the 93-year-old estate into a museum and event space.

Paul Litchfield, who led Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in the early half of the 20th century, spent his winter months at La Loma Homestead. He built the Spanish Southwestern-style home on a hill northwest of Camelback and Litchfield roads.

The Litchfield Park Historical Society is leading the project, which is still in its conceptual design stage and is expected to cost about $3 million.

The group has secured $1 million from relatives of Litchfield, said Judy Cook, a Litchfield Park Historical Society board member.

Fundraising for the Paul Litchfield Heritage Center will begin by the end of the year.

The 5,400-square-feet home has been vacant since Litchfield’s son-inlaw died in 2008. The family gifted the home and 21.2 acres around it to the city of Litchfield Park.

In search of cotton Litchfield is considered among the great industrialists of the 20th century.

Cook puts it in another way.

“Paul Litchfield was to the rubber industry what Edison was to electricity,” she said.

His story not only impacted the tiny city of 3.3 square miles that bears his name. It’s the story of Avondale, Goodyear, and communities as far north as Surprise and as far east as Chandler.

“There wouldn’t be no Wigwam (Resort), no Litchfield School district, no Goodyear-Phoenix airport,” Cook said.

Litchfield came to Arizona in 1916 to plant cotton used in his patented rubber tire. He established the Southwest Cotton Company which had cotton-growing operations in Chandler, present-day Sun City and Litchfield Park.

His innovations in farming, aeronautics and rubber helped build the Goodyear company and the West Valley.

Ohio — where the the company is based — and spent the cooler months at the La Loma Homestead.

A place that tells the region’s story The main house was built in 1925 and restored and enlarged by Litchfield’s daughter Edith and her husband Wallace Denny in the mid-1970s.

Standing near the wooden doors of the home’s main entrance, Cook said the new center will be the only place dedicated to keeping Litchfield’s story alive.

“This is an actual historical artifact,” Cook said of the near century-old property. “If you don’t have a trail of history you have no sense of how hard people have worked for us to have the culture we have today.”

the vision of Litchfield and his cousin Kenneth McMicken, who ran the farm, are the stories of the many Mexican farmers who worked the land, picked the crops, and later settled in Avondale, Cook said.

“It’s important to remember the work of everybody,” Cook said.

Gallery and event space The first phase of the project will include the restoration of the Litchfield living room, which has a mural painted in 1935 and original furniture and light fixtures made of metal by one of the farmworkers, Pedro Acuña.

The other areas of the house, such as the kitchen, dining room and bedroom, will serve as gallery space. The lower level of the house where an indoor pool is located will be the main entrance, and an additional basement floor will be added to store the archives, Cook said.

Among the collection the Litchfield Park Historical Society has stored are 700 artifacts, over 2,000 photos, thousands of documents, and recorded oral histories of about 200 people, Cook said. There are also 30 films documenting the settlement of the cotton fields and other development that came after.

Plans for new center include an outdoor event space with a catering kitchen.

As city-owned property, the project will go to the City Council for approval.

NEWS BRIEFS Inaugural Peoria film festival to be held in October

Arizona Broadway Theatre creates troupe for ages 13-19

A three-day film festival is coming to the West Valley this fall.

The Phoenix Film Foundation and Phoenix Film Festival announced the creation of the Peoria Film Fest, presented by the city of Peoria. It will be held Oct. 19-21 at the Harkins Arrowhead Fountains Theatre.

No films have been announced yet, but a mix of independent and studio releases will be screened, according to the Phoenix Film Foundation.

A theater in Peoria is adding a program for teenage singers and dancers to collaborate on artistic works.

Arizona Broadway Theatre announced the formation of HyRev, a program for those 13-19. HyRev is made up of two separate performance groups, named Sonic Revolution and HypertoneZ. Roughly 100 Valley youths auditioned for one of 61 spots within the troupe. Members of the troupe will perform on select Fridays during mainstage productions, as well as at their own winter and spring concerts.

Glendale Fire Department names assistant chief The Glendale Fire Department has announced that Ken Barnes was promoted to assistant chief on Aug. 3.

Barnes was hired by the Glendale Fire Department in 1993. Prior to his time in Glendale, he worked as a firefighter in Avondale for almost three years. Barnes has over 27 years’ experience as a firefighter.

The assistant chief position opened when the previous chief took a position as fire chief in El Mirage.

Temple Beth Shalom open house A Reform Jewish congregation will open its doors for an open house early next month.

Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley in Sun City will host an open house as a prelude to the High Holidays on Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m.

A Selichot service will be celebrated on the Saturday night before the start of Rosh Hashanah. Hors d’oeurves, desserts and beverages will be served.

There will also be an introduction to the temple’s various groups and activities.

Walk to Boot Breast Cancer The tenth annual Walk to Boot Breast Cancer will be held Oct. 21 at the Ortega parking lot in downtown Wickenburg.

Last-minute registration starts at 7 a.m. on the day of the walk. The opening ceremony begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 8 a.m.

Routes of either one mile or three and a half miles are available to walk along Simpson Ranch Road. Teams from various organizations, businesses, churches and social circles will compete to be the largest team, team with the largest donations or the team with the most men.

Special event T-shirts are included in the entry fee of $20 for breast cancer survivors, $25 for adults and $15 for children 17 and under. Entries must be received by Sept. 26.

Officer reunites with 2-year-old he helped save Bette Sharpe

A Glendale family on Aug. 14 reunited with the police officer who helped save their 2-year-old after a backyard neardrowning.

Glendale Police officer Jacob Gonzales was among the first on the scene after Diana Holmes was found Aug. 5 in a swimming pool.

Glendale patrol officers were on call for another incident near 59th Avenue and Cactus Road when a neighbor began banging on the door, asking for help.

Diana’s father, David Holmes, was carrying the limp 2-year-old.

Gonzales began infant CPR. An ambulance and members of the Glendale Fire Department were also already on the scene responding to the other call and were able to assist. The child was transported to a hospital.

Gonzales does not think of himself as a hero. “It was not just me out there. I cannot take all the credit,” he said. “Any trained officer would have done the same thing.”

The family gave Gonzales a thank-you card and Gonzales gave Diana a gift bag that includes a toy K-9 dog named Spike.

Four new restaurants were just announced in north Peoria, where residents are leveraging their demographics to attract unique shopping and dining to the growing region.

The new eateries, which should open in late spring, include a bagel shop, Italian and Mexican restaurants and a modern cuisine restaurant-bar. They are: ❚ Deem Proper: A new locally owned restaurant and bar. The menu will feature “globally-inspired” items. ❚ S & V Urban Italian: The restaurant has a Scottsdale location and offers traditional Italian cuisine with a modern, American twist. Their bar will have a selection of local beers and wine and a menu featuring wood-fired brick oven pizzas. ❚ AVENIDA Modern Mexican: The newest concept from the local team behind Revolu Modern Taqueria + Bar in Peoria’s P83 district. It will feature an upscale modern twist on Mexican food with a made-from-scratch food and drink menu. ❚ Bagels on Fire: The first Arizona location for the bagel shop that got its start in Toronto. Part of 83rd Marketplace project The restaurants are part of 83rd Marketplace, a plaza under construction at the southeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

The plaza on a 9-acre site with indoor and outdoor dining, will also include about 50,000 square feet of retail shops.

The developer, MDC Land Development, is promising a family-friendly, pedestrian-oriented commercial center that’ll serve as a go-to destination for the surrounding neighborhoods.

2-year-old boy pulled from pool has died Angie Forburger

A 2-year-old boy died after being pulled from a backyard pool in Surprise, officials said Thursday morning.

A family member returned to the home near U.S. 60 and Reems Road just before 1 p.m. Wednesday to find the boy unconscious in the unfenced pool, said Battalion Chief Julie Moore of the Surprise Fire and Medical Department.

The boy was in extremely critical condition after being pulled out of the

pool and was flown to a downtown hospital, Moore said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, said Sgt. Tim Klarkowski of the Surprise Police Department. The boy’s name was not immediately released.

When Moore was at the scene on Wednesday, she said she didn’t know how long the boy was in the pool before being found, but other family members were reportedly inside the home at the time of the drowning and were not aware it happened.

And more are coming. Nearly 3,000 new homes are projected to be built in the area over the next five years, according to city estimates.

Mayor Cathy Carlat said she’s encouraged by Roe and other residents’ involvement.

“It’s been amazing to watch neighborhoods become energized to attract the type of development they believe will elevate our city, and we look forward to seeing these private development projects come to life,” Carlat said.

Journalists aren’t the enemy: Ignorance and corruption are Your Turn Guest columnist

Since you’re reading this, you are in an unfortunate minority.

Newspaper readers.

As we know, newspaper readership has been declining for decades. And the worst result is the cuts in staff. Or worse, newspapers folding altogether.

A recent Time article notes that “daily newspaper circulation is right about where it was in 1940” when the population was 60 percent lower than it is now.

Poll after poll shows that most of us get our news from the Internet. And then, increasingly from social media.

Which as we all know, is an echo chamber of the like-minded. And hotbeds of exaggeration and distortions and outright lies.

Lies, of course, some embrace as truths, as the lies reinforce their perceptions.

Newspapers have to compete with the lies and the speed of the ‘net, and the 24/7 cable “news” channels, which are more commentary than news.

Sure, they’ll have a host report something, but that is brief and soon is followed by panels of “experts,” talking heads with assigned roles as the liberal, the conservative, the apologist and the attack dog.

We can go to whatever channel and find the same thing. Over and over and over.

Sadly, we can find newspaper reporters on those panels, blurring the lines between reporting and opinion. I wonder if that is, in some way, papers’ desperate attempt to gain readership.

Looming over all of this, though, is our president, who regularly attacks journalists. They are fake news, losers, liars, and most recently, “enemies of the people.”

He has threatened to find ways to limit newspapers, has mused about loosening libel laws to sue papers, has regularly incited his crowds to verbally attack reporters at his rallies.

And we know what he’s doing: his ham-handed but somewhat successful attempt to delegitimize journalism, to ensure his followers disbelieve what pa-

pers report.

In a recent Ipsos poll, 48 percent of Republicans polled agree with the president that “the press is the enemy of the people.” Worse, 23 percent believe the president should shut down outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post and CNN. But taking a cue from the movie “A Day Without Mexicans,” imagine if the president had his wish fulfilled.

Would we have known about Watergate? Would we have known about the alt fuels debacle in Arizona, a scandal so serious that it could’ve destroyed our economy? Would we have known about the courageous examples of everyday citizens who overcome incredible hurdles to contribute to our communities?

Would we read reports of where candidates stand on immigration or the economy, free of spin? Would we know about the serious water challenges our state and region face?

We know the answer’s, “No.” Nevertheless, fewer of us support papers through subscriptions. I’m a news junkie: I subscribe to The Republic, the Washington Post and the New York Times. And I often post links to articles from them on Facebook.

Interestingly enough, many bemoan that they can’t read the linked articles because “I’ve already read the free articles for the month.”

So constantly attacked by the leader of the Western World, faced with declining readership and social media competition, newspapers face a horrible dilemma: Do they give in to click bait, the trend toward giving what readers want, fluffing up the news or reporting on the sensational? Or do they dig in and continue to perform the job of journalists, to poke around our institutions, to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted?

The answer’s clear. The press is far from the enemy of the people, as our champion of the falsehood claims. In fact, at its best, journalism is the heroic eyes for the rest of us. Without it, we are the prey of those who are dishonest. Including those at the highest level of our government.

By August, many metro Phoenix residents are itching for an outdoor adventure, but temperatures are too hot during the day. Maricopa County Regional Parks offer nighttime programs for those interested in exploring nature after dark.

Sunset Photography Walk During the Sunset Photography Walk at San Tan Mountain Regional Park on Aug. 23, visitors can stop and take photos along a trail that was chosen for the time of year and position of the sun on the horizon.

The guided walk offers a chance for amateur and skilled photographers to capture the colors of the sky during sunset. They may see birds, lizards or ground squirrels along the path.

Interpretive Ranger Nikki Bunnell will lead the hike, which travels about a mile from the Main Trailhead at the Phillips Road entrance. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras and tripods.

Ranger Mark’s Hot Summer Night Hike New sights, sounds and smells often greet participants on nighttime hikes, even when they visit familiar spots. Each time is a different experience on Ranger Mark’s Hot Summer Night Hike, depending on the size and makeup of the group. The next night hike is Aug. 24.

What stays the same each time is Interpretive Ranger Mark Paulat, who leads visitors along a scenic trail in Cave Creek Regional Park. Past hikers have seen snakes, scorpions, tarantulas,

horned lizards, coyotes, deer, bats, spiders and a desert tortoise. The experience changes throughout the season based on rainfall, temperature and the phase of the moon.

Full Moon Hike Getting out into the open air during sunset can be a rejuvenating experience that reconnects one to nature. During Estrella Mountain Regional Park’s Full Moon Hike on Aug. 25, Interpretive Ranger Amanda Rothermal will lead hikers 1 to 2 miles along a park trail, where they will see a sunset and a full moon.

She will point out constellations and talk about desert ecology. Participants interested in astronomy will have a chance to see Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. In the past, groups have spotted bats, lizards, coyotes, spiders, birds and scorpions. Prior to the hike, the ranger will feed the snakes inside the park’s Nature Center, the starting point for the hike.

The guided walk is on rocky terrain, which is not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

‘Animal House’ 40th Anniversary Toga Party Anyone who has seen the cult classic film “Animal House” will remember Otis Day and the Knights, the band that played “Shout” and “Shama Lama Ding Dong” during party scenes. The band will perform at the Marquee Theatre on Aug. 25 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie.

The group’s makeup has changed over the years, but it is still led by Otis Day, the memorable character played by DeWayne Jessie in the 1978 film. They still play the two hit songs from the film and mix in feel-good songs from the era, such as “Gimme Some Lovin’ “ and “Soul Man.” “It’s music with real emotion. Music with real emotion never changes. I’ll be here until the end of time,” Jessie said.

Jessie said the music fuels nostalgia in audiences, who are now sharing the songs with their children and grandchildren. Over the years, the group has become more modern, incorporating hiphop into its sound and updating its look.

Jessie said his character has grown up but is still the life of the party.

In the movie, Jessie portrayed Otis Day but lip-synched to vocals by Lloyd Williams. Following the success of the film, the actor started to sing live during performances. He said singing came naturally to him because he came from a musical family. In the 1950s, his brother worked with several bands, including the Coasters.

From the start, Jessie worked to flesh out the character of Otis Day. “I had to bring a part of myself in there. It was a character on a piece of paper. I had to blow it up. I had to put blood in it. I had to put veins and nerves into it,” Jessie said.

The cast formed a tight bond, he said, and many of them still keep in touch.

“It was an experience that everyone in that film will never have again. We had a camaraderie. We get out maybe once or twice a year. We get together, just have drinks and party and remiSee WEEKEND, Page 14

‘Musical Icon: Leonard Bernstein’ During his illustrious career, Leonard Bernstein led the New York Philharmonic and created music for theater, film, ballet and opera. He is best known for his compositions for the Broadway musical “West Side Story,” the film “On the Waterfront” and the operetta “Candide.”

The Musical Instrument Museum will celebrate the American pianist, composer and conductor with “Musical Icon: Leonard Bernstein,” a special event in its Musical Icon series.

On Saturday, the museum will show the Academy-Award-winning 1961 film adaption of “West Side Story.” On Sunday, attendees can watch an episode of “Young People’s Concerts,” a long-running classical music series.

On both days, local singer Lauren Berman and pianist Juliana Witt will perform pieces from “I Hate Music!” and “Glitter and Be Gay” from “Candide,” and pianist Josef Tapia will engage audiences with Bernstein’s “Four Anniversaries.”

Flavio Chamis, a former conducting assistant for Berstein, will lead a talk on Bernstein’s Jewish-inspired compositions and influence on Jewish music. He will also share archival footage, images and personal stories of working with the conductor.

Other activities include a conducting workshop, a baton-making craft activity and special menu items such as “Fancy Free” French onion soup and “New York, New York” cheesecake.

Guests can explore the museum’s Leonard Bernstein exhibition, which contains pieces such as a baton, tie and vest from the legendary conductor.

“I like to draw animals,” he says. “I like cartoon stuff — but not SpongeBob.” Nathan says he hopes to be a graphic designer when he grows up.

Meanwhile, he is focused on high school and being a typical teen. He likes riding a BMX bike and chatting with friends on social media. He likes shooting pool and playing board games. He likes watching the television show “Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments” and reading the young-adult fantasy novels on which the show is based.

Nathan would thrive in a two-parent forever family in which he is the only child. He hopes to find a loving family that will help him continue to grow.

“I want to be that kid who forgets about my past and what I used to do and move on,” he says.

Yoga is one of the most popular concepts of Eastern ideology known to the world.

Although, widely understood to be a system of physical exercise, yoga in Indian tradition is beyond bodily practice of different postures; it has a meditative and spiritual essence.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root Yuj, which means “to unite” The Latin root of the word religion, religio, means something similar: “to bind back.”

Yoga and religion actually refer to a process that unites one’s self (soul) with the higher spiritual principle (God). God is known across the world by many names including Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, Rama, etc., according to his different qualities and activities. Kr is hn a, a

Sanskrit name, means “the all-attractive one.”

Although yoga is practiced in many forms, there are four major, widely practiced traditions. Jnana yoga is the path of knowledge; Karma yoga is the path of knowledge in action; Asthanga yoga is the path of practicing bodily postures, breath control and mediation; and Bhakti yoga is the path of divine love.

Bhakti — loving devotional service — is central to India’s spiritual culture, and its origins date back to the ancient Vedic period.

Several renowned teachers and saints over centuries revered this process through their teachings, writings, poetry, etc., to emphasize its simplicity and profundity in awakening one’s natural love for God and his children — the living entities.

Bhakti yoga culminates in selfless loving service to God unmotivated by desires for personal enjoyment or selfish material gains. Mantra meditation Continued on Page 20

or chanting of God’s holy names is one of the key aspects of practicing Bhakti yoga process, which is believed to cleanse the mind and awaken the soul’s dormant love for God. In 1965 the Bhakti movement left India in the hands of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who at the age of 69 with a compassionate heart carrying out the orders of his spiritual master, came to the United State. After facing many hardships, in July 1966, he established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Kr is hn a movement.

The movement’s main purpose is to promote the well-being of human society by teaching the science of God consciousness (Kr is hn a consciousness) through the process of Bhakti yoga.

The non-sectarian movement welcomes all irrespective of one’s religion, nationality, race, gender, etc., harboring the principles of unity and peace. The timeless message was soon well-received by the people across the globe, and within short time, the movement grew with over 300 temples, 50 rural communities, 40 schools and 75 restaurants in 85 countries giving a strong message of universal brotherhood.

The Phoenix chapter of ISKCON (ISKCON Phoenix) was founded in 1996 at

the premises popularly known as Radha-Krishna Temple in Chandler.

The temple has been serving the community in various capacities such as conducting Self Discovery Sessions, which are open to all weekly, home programs in the neighborhood focusing on the teachings of Bhagavad Gita — an ancient Vedic scripture — and its practical applicability in day-to-day life.

There are regular programs for children and youth on value education and character-building. The temple’s youth club also takes an active role in feeding the poor and hungry.

The temple supports a Bhakti yoga club at the Arizona State University, which conducts educational sessions

on yoga and meditation for the students. There are regular cultural events and festivals at the temple, often accompanied by sanctified vegetarian delicacies with open access to anyone who is interested.

One of the biggest and most awaited upcoming celebrations is Sri Krishna Janmashtami, observing the birth anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead, which will be celebrated Sept. 3 at the temple.

Cardinal events start at 6 p.m. and go until well after midnight.

Helen Elizabeth Nebeker was a young lady entering her teenage years in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the time the United States was entering World War II in December 1941. With an unhappy situation involving her family, she left home at age 15 looking for greener pastures.

During that era birth certificates were hand written in ink, so being the creative person she was, it was easy for her to suddenly add three years to her age by changing her birth year from 1927 to 1924. The older age was a necessity in obtaining a job at a defense plant where she could make decent money.

By 1944 at her actual age of 17 she fell in love with a young Army corporal from Arizona named Aquila Chauncey “Neb” Nebeker Jr.

With the complications of war entering the equation, Helen and “Neb” were married on Aug. 5, 1944. On Oct. 8, 1944, they had their last kiss until January 1946. During that interim he shipped out to Europe on a 15-month assignment, in which they would exchange over 800 letters.

During the war, Helen traveled by train from Indianapolis to Mesa, where she would be spending time with Neb’s parents.

She was surprised by the heat of Arizona but adjusted, went to work, and began the long wait for her husband to return. Finally, in January 1946, Neb made his way back home to Mesa.

Hollywood made some films during that era giving audiences a glimpse of life on the home front during World War II. One such film was “Since You Went Away” from 1944, which was good but didn’t compare to the memories of someone who lived through the experience like

Helen and Neb did.

On Oct. 11, 1944, Helen wrote to her husband: “Since you left, this has been the loneliest place you can imagine. I thought that I had rather prepared myself for your going but I had no idea it would be this rough.”

After the war, Helen and Neb embarked on their lives together encountering the struggles of many wartime couples trying to make it in the post-war environment.

They had their ups and downs but lived through 57 years of marriage ended only

by Neb’s death in 2001 at age 82. During their marriage they had a son and a daughter.

For someone who quit school at 15 and left home to work in a defense plant, it was commendable that Helen later returned to her studies and eventually became a professor of English at Arizona State University.

Education was very important to her,

and against all odds she achieved a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D., teaching at ASU from 1957 to 1988.

In 2005, she wrote a memoir of her 57 year marriage titled “Bittersweet: A Candid Love Story.” She retired in 1988 from ASU and died in January 2018, one day before her 91st birthday.

I was fortunate to meet Professor Nebeker in 2008 while working on another story about Mr. Nebeker and her.

During my interviews she was the ultimate in personality and good manners, and if I had to use one word to describe her it would probably be “classy.”

She will be missed.
