October’s cooler temperatures are a great incentive to get outside and enjoy fall in DC Ranch!

Whether your journey takes you to the coffee shop for a pumpkin spice latte or down a trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, DC Ranch is your place for adventure and exploration this October.

The month kicks off with the ultimate challenge, the 15th Annual Tour de Scottsdale. Come on out and cheer on the cyclists as they depart Market Street and pedal through the beautiful desert scenery of the community on October 7. Proceeds from the Tour benefit our neighbor, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. October is Preserve Month, and the Conservancy offers numerous opportunities to learn more about the desert landscape, wildlife and climate.

Later this month, the whole family can enjoy Halloween week events, with special activities for all ages, including Spooky Carnival: Hotel Ranchsylvania on Oct. 27.

Desert Camp playground gets makeover The playground at Desert Camp is getting a new look in October. The new playground features a solid rubberized surface with play zones for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. Existing play equipment in the wash will be removed with the exception of DC Ranch’s signature John Deere tractor. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-October, in time for the annual Spooky Carnival. A playground is more than a place to jump, climb and swing.

Outdoor play areas help children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. This new playground will provide DC Ranch children with a place to grow, play and thrive together.

he Homestead and Desert Camp community centers are hubs of activity for DC Ranch— comfortable gathering spaces that host fitness classes, resident activities, meetings, programs, workout space, rentals, major community events, casual drop-in card games, and more.

DC Ranch is committed to creating a welcoming environment, while ensuring safety and preserving the amenities for homeowners, tenants and guests. As such, new community center access guidelines were introduced in January 2018.

Residents and tenants must complete a facility usage and agreement waiver prior to receiving or updating their key fobs.

Photo IDs are required and each person must be listed at the property address.

Each residence in DC Ranch will be issued one complimentary key fob. Qualifying residences may purchase two additional key fobs depending on occupancy.

Homeowners who lease their property may choose to keep or extend their community access privileges to their tenants.

Newsworthy November 6 is Election Day

amendment is six pages long and should be read prior to voting. The initiative comes to the ballot through a citizens’ petition.

Many people vote early using the mail-in ballot process but unfortunately, many people do not vote at all.

Be someone who votes!

More information on both initiatives, including the six-page Prop 420 Charter Amendment, can be found on the city of Scottsdale’s website at scottsdaleaz.gov/elections.

Why vote? Because the results of every election matter to our community. Vote because the choices you make matter. Vote because elections are about more than who will be the next president; mid-term elections are important, too. In this election, voters will choose who will lead our local and state governments and represent us in Washington.

These people will have a significant effect on our daily lives.

The city of Scottsdale will have two local initiatives on the ballot. The first is a .10 percent transportation sales tax increase for a period of ten years (10 cents on every 100 dollars). These tax dollars would be used to fund transportation improvement projects within the city of Scottsdale.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with these initiatives and read about the candidates running for office.

Every vote counts, so please cast yours!

DC Ranch Community Council Resident Group: Get Involved!

The second initiative, referred to as Prop 420, is a city charter amendment that would prohibit the alteration of the natural state of McDowell Sonoran Preserve lands and limit the use of Preserve tax funds for any purpose other than those specifically outlined in the amendment, unless authorized by Scottsdale registered voters at a general or special election. Tour de Scottsdale celebrate

he Tour de Scottsdale is celebrating its 15-year milestone along with the 20-year anniversary of DC Ranch.

The 15th annual Tour de Scottsdale, kicks off on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Market Street in DC Ranch at 6:30 a.m. with 30-mile and 70-mile citizens rides. After the Tour, riders and spectators will get to hear the popular 74th Street Band perform rock and blues hits.

The Tour de Scottsdale is produced and hosted

by DC Ranch Community Council and proceeds from the event benefit the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization in Scottsdale that protects and promotes the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

“The Tour de Scottsdale is unique in that the 70-mile course circumnavigates the Preserve.

In essence, the participants get to ride around what it benefits.

The Preserve is a beautiful gem that’s in our own backyard and we love supporting it with the Tour,” said Gabrielle Enriquez, Senior Manager of Events and Programs.

This year’s Tour will feature some exciting new additions, along with elements that participants have come to expect.

For the first time, residents and participants can enjoy a beer garden sponsored by Michelob Ultra.

There will also be Tour de Scottsdale 15-year commemorative cups for sale with all of the proceeds going to The Conservancy.

“The Tour has evolved over the years to include a 30-mile ride.

The event has grown from approximately 400 riders the first year to more than 1,700 annually,” said Enriquez.

“People come from all over the region, and some from as far as England and Germany, to participate.”

Since then, she and her father have trained by waking up at 5:30 a.m. once a week for the past year to ride the paths and trails of DC Ranch as well as the surrounding community. They complete their ride with a treat at AJ’s.

“I love riding my bike. It’s my favorite sport. I’m so excited to ride this year,” said Ariana.

“I’ve never participated in an event like this. I’m doing this for her—to encourage her,” said her father, Valentin.

riana Dinu is the Tour de Scottsdale’s youngest rider at the age of seven. This year’s ride will be the first time she’s old enough to qualify for the Tour accompanied by her coach and father, Valentin, but she’s ready for the challenge.

The Dinu family—Valentin, Nandita, Ariana and Carina—have lived in the Parks and Manor neighborhood of DC Ranch for eight years and enjoy biking the paths and trails as a family.

At four years old, Ariana saw the cyclists in action at the Tour de Scottsdale and it inspired her to make it a goal of her own.

“We saw riders in the Tour a few years ago and Ariana asked me what they were doing. She said she wanted to do it too one day. I didn’t really take it seriously since she was four at the time,” said Nandita. “I’m a little nervous for her to be surrounded by so many adult riders, but also excited.”

The Dinu family are next door neighbors of Chris Kirkpatrick who was featured in last year’s October Ranch News about his involvement in the Tour de Scottsdale.

That further spurred on Ariana to pursue her goal.

The father-daughter duo are geared up to complete the 30-mile ride for the first time as a team.

Ariana loves the mountains and is very aware that the Tour is for a good cause directly benefitting the Preserve.

The family has served as an inspiration for neighbors and friends to ride to become more physically active and fit.

Currently, Ariana is the only child in her neighborhood who rides her bike to school but she hopes more classmates will join her in the future.

When asked what she would like as a reward after she crosses the finish line to victory, Ariana answered, “I want milk and bacon.”

The second grader hopes to ride the Tour every year, eventually working her way up to the 70-mile ride and, with her determination, there’s no doubt she will.

ne in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women. However, new research is pointing to an easy and free way to decrease your risk through vitamin D.

Humans were meant to spend time in the sun; in ancient times, people spent the day naked from morning until dusk in the sun. Researchers have found that high levels of vitamin D equal a lower risk of breast cancer. A 2017 study demonstrated an 800 percent higher risk of breast cancer in women with the lowest levels of vitamin D. It also found that if you’ve already had breast cancer, higher vitamin D means an increased chance of survival.

There are a few ways to increase your vitamin D levels, but it’s important to get your levels checked first. The best lab test for vitamin D is by blood and it is called 25 hydroxy-vitamin D. Ask your doctor about getting testing done.

A good way to increase vitamin D exposure is through full body sunshine. The key is getting sun in the morning, noon, and early evening. Ten to fifteen minutes per session is recommended.

In the morning, UVA and UVB levels are low, but the other energies from the sun are high and can protect you from the dangers of UVA and UVB that comes with noontime exposure. UVA and UVB have a purpose and bodies are designed to accept those energies and make vitamin D from them.

Vitamin D for breast cancer survival

Another way to get vitamin D is through eating eggs, fish and meat. Mushrooms also contain a form of vitamin D. It’s beneficial to buy organic, when possible, with meat and eggs from pasture-raised animals and wild-caught seafood.

Vitamin D supplements are only recommended for those who can’t get enough sun. Usually 5000 IU per day can get your 25 hydroxy-vitamin D levels to the recommended level. You should also take a quality multivitamin and vitamin K2. K2 keeps calcium in the bones and out of the arteries.

Be sure to talk with your doctor about any supplements.

Don’t be afraid of the sun, but remember that exposure is good, but sunburn is not. Use sunscreen during prolonged exposure, preferably organic options without harmful ingredients.

Debbie McKeigan has lived in the Desert Parks village in Terrace Homes East neighborhood of DC Ranch with her husband, Jace, and their three children since 2004. They were the first residents in their neighborhood and have seen the area grow and come alive in ways they could never have imagined.

After having their third child, the family of five outgrew their McDowell Mountain Ranch home and the search was on to find more space. As luck would have it, their real estate agent had a lot fall out of contract and the McKeigans had 24 hours to decide on whether to build in DC Ranch.

were on paper,” said McKeigan. “In the begin beginning, Desert Parks didn’t really feel like a part of DC Ranch because it was a little far from everything else at the time.”

Debbie and Jace quickly decided to take a chance on the community and couldn’t be happier with their decision 14 years later.

According to Debbie, the programs and events have been the amenity they use the most. Their children—Rachel, Sarah and Ben—have enjoyed many events over the years. The girls were also active in The Homestead Playhouse productions and as volunteers.

“The programming is really what sets DC Ranch apart from other communities for us and it’s so easy for the children to get involved,” she said. “We also use the paths, trails and parks. There’s a sense of safety and security that we feel here.”

The entire family believes in giving back and has been engaged in the community since the beginning. Debbie served on the Community Council board for six years and volunteered on the DC Ranch Gives and The Homestead Playhouse committees. She’s a volunteer coordinator for GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down syndrome achievement center.

Jace is involved as a steward for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.

Currently, he holds a volunteer position as the Chairman of the Preserve Commission for the City of Scottsdale.

“I don’t foresee us leaving DC Ranch. This is a great central location with access to freeways and great schools. Our kids’ childhood has been framed by the signature events, like Spooky Carnival, and smaller neighborhood parties in the pocket parks,” she said.
